The MASSIVE Development Changes After Fire Emblem Three Houses's Trailers

  • Most of what the first trailer for Fire Emblem: Three Houses (E3 2018) advertises is not even in the game, or had been significantly changed by the game’s second trailer during Nintendo Direct 2019. For example: The command menu is quite different between then and now, magic, and more importantly, formations, are not there anymore. Even instructing mechanics showcased in this trailer never ended up being the game. In this video, we compare Three Houses’s first game trailer from E3 2018, second trailer from Nintendo Direct 2019 to the actual game itself.

    The interesting thing is that when you think about it, Ashe doesn't really have any significant direct connections to anyone else in the Blue Lions like they all do with each other. Dimitri, Ingrid, Sylvain, and Felix are all childhood friends, Mercedes and Annette are best friends. and Dedue serves as Dimitri's retainer. Ashe doesn't have that same sense of familiarity with anyone else in that house.

All other lines are in the game, most of them in CF or BE-WC. But this one line, isn't and I wonder where it was. Where did Edelgard say goodbye to Byleth? The other lines suggest, this is CF. Maybe when Edelgard gets crowned, she doesn't come back with you. Instead you are left making excuses for her until she returns with the army? It is actually hard to wrap your head around and would explain why they just yeet Byleth off a cliff. Sounds cool but you can’t use fist combat arts and your might is only your base strength. Would’ve been really cool if you could perform fist combat arts and land them twice if you’re unarmed, there’s nothing weighing you down and it also appeals to using your base strength if not grant you a guarantee follow up.

  • @Pomelheim
    @Pomelheim Před 3 lety +8

    I don't comment often but you highlight some really good points! I work in game dev, so it's interesting that so many text changes went in so late; you want your text water-tight before you request localistion. It's a huge task and it's usually done right at the end, but just early enough so QA have enough time to test it (any issues with the localised text can genuinely delay a release, so pretty risky to do late). I think you're right in saying a lot of these scenes were "scripted" for the trailer to show off certain aspects as well, we do that a lot too :P
    My two cents on the art style: it likely changed for performance reasons, it seems like such a drastic visual change to implement in the last year of development (visual style is decided early on). The final game runs pretty well but there are still some drops (last Crimson Flower fight comes to mind, it drops significantly when you zoom out), its probably why the textures as so pixelated too in some areas, probably an uphill struggle during development!

      Hardware limitations. Nintendo is stubbornly insistent that the way to make more money while keeping their prices competitive is by making their consoles out of playdough. They've never once made a console with current-gen tech; they're _always_ at least a few years in the hole, and that's by design. The Switch could be twice as powerful as it is, with little to no trade-offs or sacrifices. The only reason it isn't is that Nintendo wants to be able to undercut Microsoft and Sony while still squeezing every last ounce of profit like the wretched, money-hungry vampires that business executives invariably are. And because of this situation, ambitious projects such as Three Houses need to be optimized and reoptimized to run as efficiently as possible on the limited hardware they have to work with. Optimizing Nintendo games is like being asked to render a copy of the Mona Lisa using a pack of worn-down crayons with half the colours missing. I have great respect for the people who take this on in order to make these games playable for us. And even with all their work, games like 3H and Breath of the Wild still have uncomfortable FPS drops. Three Houses, while amazing and infinitely enjoyable, suffers the shortcomings it does chiefly because it was given insufficient development time, but also because it's on the Switch.

He does not have any relations with anyone in the blue lions as there is the friend group of Dimitri, Ingrid, Sylvain, and Felix. Dedue is Dimitri’s retainer. Dimitri knows Gilbert which links him to Annette, who she herself is friends with Mercedes. He quite didn’t fit in. So I think they changed his backstory and added him to the blue lions.

In particular is Fates which seemed to have quite of few of these like how the chapter you fight Leo in on Birthright has, within the unit placement data, regular units (Generals, Cavs, etc) as though Leo originally would fighter you with a standard Nohrian army, but the end result obviously turned into just him and his endlessly spawning Faceless reinforcements.
