  • The 13.5" Surface Laptop 3 is a great premium Windows laptop, just like Dell's XPS 13 2-in-1, but which one is the better buy?

Both of these premium Windows laptops feature excellent build quality, with all-metal designs, apart from a carbon fiber composite palm rest on the XPS.
Both of these feature biometric authentication, but the Surface actually has infrared facial scanning, so you're logged into Windows instantly!
The XPS features a hinge that can fold all the way back for tablet mode use, which is nice for viewing shows and movies.
The Surface has a large trackpad which works very well, while the XPS has an excellent keyboard that goes from one edge to the other.
The Surface also has speakers that are hidden beneath the keyboard, and they actually sound amazing!
Both of these feature Intel's latest 10th-gen 10nm Ice Lake processors, and they perform incredibly well.
However, both of them have their own flaws, so let's talk about them!

It is not fair to compare one-handed opening on the two laptops because 2 in 1s require stiffness so that you don't get lots of flex when in theater mode. Otherwise good comparison. :-)

      Gl reading!
I have also been looking for this and i think i will get the base surface and maybe a surface dock and pen for 250 extra so that makes 1150 for me. Now i would have a LOT of ports and charging at the same time, this could also be done with thunderbolt in a lower price but the just better touchpen, wifi 6, better touchpad, hello face recognitian, replaceble ssd, modular somponents and the alcantara on the surface makes up for this, but this is all for me and maybe you will get something out of my choice but this is how i would do it for ME. Or if anyone wants to convince me please do i just want the best experience.

Best Buy had it for $999 last week when I picked it up. Currently typing this comment on it. I'm very satisfied. Bootup and Windows Hello are lightning quick, the screen looks great once you get used to 3:2, and the battery life is way better than I've read in reviews. And man the design is so sleek. I think it's better looking and feeling than the similar spec MacBook Pro.
Although there is one bug that's SUPER annoying. If you turn the brightness all the way down and activate the keyboard backlight, the screen backlight shuts off almost every time. I hope it's just a software issue.

You also flamed a surface book for how horrible it was compared to a Mac, but that was not true. It blew my mind when I tried it, and I didn't notice any of the many flaws you mentioned in your review.

The only thing thunderbolt does that usb 3.1 can't do is an external GPU, and you REALLY shouldn't be using those anyways because they're a gigantic waste of money for the performance you'll get.

Not sure about the dell, Macbook pros need a whole new top assembly, unless you are really good at scraping glue.
They are designing these high price laptops like disposable airpods, to sell you a new one over servicing the old one.

The graphics on the new 10th gen Ice Lake family are not called UHD (not on Comet Lake anyway, only on Ice Lake). They are way superior to any other integrated graphics that Intel has ever made and are called "Intel Iris Plus." It's denoted by the "G" at the end of the processor's name (i.e. i7-1065G7). The G1 version has 32 execution units, the G4 has 48, and the G7 has 64 EUs. Very decent - not equal to a discrete card, but really exceptional for IGP. Any of them can easily handle 4K for almost all tasks except gaming. And with the G7 you can game some. With settings turned down, yes., But you can game.

If you don’t go and do it and then talk to me back ,now it also depends on your personal preferences if you love the Dell is fine nothing to tsk about but reality is different from your perspective I can guarantee 90% of the ppl would like the form factor and clean finish of the surface 3 by a long shot.

First of all they did change the design on the 13 model, but even if they hadn't, it's like you saying ""That supermodel from 4 years ago in now ugly and boring because she hasn't changed"" Great logic! Boring my ass, this thing is beautiful and if you honestly think that 90% of people would prefer the Surface with those bezels then you haven't met many people me thinks...If one of them has a "clean finish" that's the Dell, the Surface's contrast of the square monitor with thick rounded bezels alone makes it not-clean.

    surface laptop 3
    1. Much more quality packaging.
    2. more report of Dell's battery malfunction
    .
    3. Minimalist and beautiful design
    (aluminum).
    4. More pixel density at price 1600 USD (surface 201 ppi - dell 164 ppi)
    5. More quality speakers and louder sound
    .
Dell cannot resolve the coil whine issue for many years (because it's too severe!) and also touchpad tracking isn't very good. Scrolling intermittently stops and not as smooth.
Camera Hardware does not support Windows facial recognition
    .
Disappointed that audio quality is weak, muffled, and vibrates. This is a deal killer for an expensive premium laptop.
The audio is much worse than my 2016 Dell XPS 13. The speakers are on the bottom of the laptop, so it's not clear what the designers of this were thinking!!!

The rest of the points that you and I mentioned are all right
And here's the different needs of each of us and tastes are important for making the final decision.
