Come on now, you should know better Max:
The USBC port on the surface does indeed support monitors and docks, and ssd's, just not faster gpu's and tb3 products.
The surface dock charges faster than usbc, and has an extra usba charger port on it, it also has a ton of docks and adapters available, including ironically a Microsoft usbc adapter that supports charging, most do not know this.
Again the usbc port on the surface along with adapters for the surfaceconnect fully support 4k Color accurate monitors.
And the Surface fully supports artists with their stylus support for drawing/image editing/video editing/music editing programs, and their full touch screen supports video and audio editing and web surface using your fingers/pen on the screen for better and faster control in many situations than a trackpad or mouse.
I am suprised you did not mention the touchscreen.
Or that Microsoft sells docks and a usbc adapter for the surface connect. (that supports docks, monitors, and usbc charging).
That the surface connect is magnetic like Magsafe, and can save your laptop from a fall if you trip over the cord, while charging.
That the surface connect allows for fast charging, faster than usbc or thunderbolt-80% in 1 hour.
The ssd and wifi card can be upgraded in the surface 3 laptop.
The fabric version with the same 128GB storage as the macbook Pro is $300 dollars cheaper, and aside from the fabric is identical to the Alumuinum surface with upgradeable ssd ay a later date for much cheaper possible by the user.
Other then better cpu/gpu perfprmance, 2 usba ports, taller screen, ability to add another usbc, or dock or monitor to the fast charging surface connect port....
....the ace up Microsoft's sleeve is that users can upgrade the ssd themselves, with a special torx driver.
512GB is about $80, and 1TB is under $200, as we speak, and this is huge!
Most people with thunderbolt 3 never ever upgrade to an expensive egpu chassis, and then also buy the expensive videocard, along with the expensive short tb3 cable, we are talking about an extra $500-$1500 cost.
Most buyer who will need thunderbolt three do the practical thing and buy a laptop with dedicated graphics as many 13-14" laptops have now aside from apple, that is much cheaper then adding an EGPU through thunderbolt, and with less complexity and compatibility and driver problems.
Most use thunderbolt 3 to add docks, port adapters, monitors, storage, battery cases, all of which can be down just as well and fast with usbc.
The tenth gen processors have special instructions on them that speed up rendering, encoding, 4 k even 8k, that is not available on the 8th gen chips
    Otherwise great comparison..
    Thanks.

Both are great machines, I own a macbook pro, and have a desktop for heavy lifting.
So, if I were to buy a laptop today, it would probably be the alcantara $999 surface 3 laptop, which is usually $200 off every where for $799, and then add my own 512 SSD for $80=$10 torx screw driver.
      Buy a used stylus $25.
And an extended warranty, all for about $1000.
All while being, quite a bit cheaper than the 256GB Macbook Pro.
      Which is $1699.
Apple charges an insane amount for memory and storage upgrades, which is where their big profits come from, ironically, Microsoft charges an even higher rate.
But since Microsoft wants to sell to enterprise businessess, they "HAVE" to include removable ssd's for security and repair reasons.
Apple could care less about the business enterprise market.
Or the requirement of removable ssds, to protect one's privacy when the machines need servicing or are sold in 2 to 4 years when the lease is up.
And quite a bit faster at graphics and cpu, with no fan.
Both are more then capable for color accurate work, and in my case, I would just hook the surface up to my color accurate 4K desktop monitor, the same as I do my Macbook Pro now.
Having said that, I think the Macbook Pro 13, is probably the best value Macbook Pro you can buy right now, and is a great machine too, especially for those of us, that HAVE to have Mac OSX, and even for those switching from windows for the first time.

Some things that USB-C can't support is 10Gbe, eGPU's and other external devices that need PCI express, daisy-chaining, dual 4K monitors and in some cases 5k and 6K monitors compared to a single 4K being the max, TB3 can also output audio without the need for a DAC like USB-C does, They really should have gave us at least one Thunderbolt 3 in a laptop that ranges from $1000-$2400. Similarly priced Dell laptops give us 2x TB3 ports.

Price wise, Macbook will always be more expensive than Windows, in a nutshell its all about Resale value.
Macbooks do not lose value that easily. A MacBook’s resale value is much higher than Windows laptops. Even though you paid quite a bit for your MacBook, you can recover some of that by selling it. Plus the "Made by Apple" concept Seriously. Apple is a high margin business and markets itself as a premium brand. It has the resources to market very expensive products and actually sell them. Windows laptops? Not really. Also, the world’s most popular smartphone, the iPhone works very, very, very perfectly with Macbooks. Major MacOS apps are 100% compatible and have almost 100% feature parity with their iOS versions. This makes you miss less from your iPhone when you are using a MacBook. Does the above make Windows laptops inferior? No. Okay honestly, somehow. However, some people just prefer Windows. But MacBooks are exceptional machines that many people appreciate. They’re very dependable, they have awesome looks, and have great overall performance. That’s why makes MacBooks more expensive than Windows laptops.

Not worth it. HP's build quality is not that good. It has cracking sound when pressed towards bottom right or bottom left. Its kinda flimsy. Build quality is not that great. You wouldn't be confident while using it compared to XPS 13 2in1 or MacBook Pro for that case. These devices feel a lot more superior and kinda rigid and well build compared to the HP. I'm not saying Dell is better. It's just well built. Dell has its own share issues including the infamous coil whine issue and wifi issues with killer wifi cards used in them. You're better off getting any surface device. Either the laptop or the tablet. They're overall well built devices now with a little bit of repairability as well. If surface isn't the go-to device for you, why not consider something like the upcoming samsung galaxy book flex but you have to wait till march to get it i suppose. That seems quite nice also including the S-Pen. In Dell, you need to buy the pen separately and it doesn't charge so you're stuck with AAAA batteries etc. Also, Dell has a major drawback. It doesn't have Windows Hello.

Thanks for the great comparison. Appreciate your thoroughness! You missed one point. The Surface pro has a touch screen.
In my work I mainly read documents and attend meetings. Everything is paperless so I mostly read .pdfs and annotate before and during meetings on glass with a stylus. I use soft notebooks for all note taking. Like to hand write notes only. Better engages the brain with the content and you can draw lines and pictures as you go. Often pdf an email and add it to the meeting folder. Give me paper, I hand it back, "email or link me, now".
As an early adopter I use an iPad (my 3rd) and have a Macbook Pro. Most of my colleagues are now paperless and more than half use now use touch screen PCs and more than half of them are MS Surfaces.
Perhaps you could follow up this review by comparing the Surface with the iPad. Ease of annotation of documents and use of note books for hand written notes. Comparison of Aps. Ease of email use, opening and making small changes to MS office files, ease of conversion of MS Office files to .pdfs for meetings. Yeh I know MS Office does hand writing too. I love Good Reader. Kills everything else.
When you compare costs you need to compare the Surface with a Macbook Pro plus an iPad with Apple keyboard and Apple pencil. The Apple cost will be more than 1.5 times could be 2X if you went top line iPad. Then there is the nuisance of charging and looking after two devices plus hassles with transferring documents through iCloud. I would be really interested in a proper comparison between the Surface and Apple equivalent for my use case.
    Thanks again.
    P

Great comparison overall. Was good to see both laptops up close next to each other.
Like others have said, you didn't mention the touch screen of the Surface Laptop 3. The laptop can actually be connected to to monitors in a number of ways too. Via the type C port, via the surface dock, via a surface adapter etc. I have the Surface Pro 6 and charge it using power delivery and a connect to type C connection cable. I have the Surface dock too, which can be picked up at a good price. It adds a lot of ports and charges the laptop rapidly.
I do agree that the lack of thunderbolt 3 is annoying. It's not a deal breaker for me as I have other laptops that do have Thunderbolt 3 and I have laptops with good graphics cards too, but I know for many people this could be their only laptop so the ability to add an eGPU later is appealing.
That being said. When you take into account the cost of an eGPU, the cost of a graphics card and the fact that eGPUs lose more than 30% due to the lane restrictions; there is a good argument for just buying a big and bulky gaming laptop if you do need more power. The total setup for a good eGPU with a decent card could be four digits. It isn't cheap and it's not always that practical either as there's a ton of driver issues for each device and they aren't hot swappable.
Thanks again for the comparison. Was good to see them both up close :)

the USB-C port can be connected to docks and to screens, quite easily. The accessories are also much more affordable. That said, it would have been preferable to have Thunderbolt regardless, since you can always use the ordinary Type C accessories anyway, but still, not nearly as bad as it sounds. I should also point out that Surface Connect on the other side can do most of those things (port expansion, video out and so on), so you can actually choose Surface accessories or generic USB-C accessories.

@@osvaldoespino2813 Well, just to be clear, you CAN use USB-C to connect to the monitor (and even if you need to use it for other things if you buy a USB-C hub). But if for some reason you specifically wanted, you would have the other two ports. You can buy a USB-A to HDMI (or DisplayPort) adapter, or you can use the Microsoft Surface Dock (although I wouldn't recommend it as it's quite expensive and it only supports DisplayPort). of course, it's faster in gpu and cpu, has a taller brighter touch screen, better keyboard, upgradeable storage, although apple screen is better at dcpi, they both can still do color critical photos and videos.
Both can use adobe, and a ton of great phot and video apps.
The surface supports a stylus/touchscreen which greatly enhancing photo and video editing and in many cases is better than a mouse or trackpad.
      Both have excellent customer support.
However the 16GB version are super expensive.
The 128GB surface 3 laptop is $300 cheaper than the macbook pro, that $300 dollars can do a lot, you can upgrade the ssd yourself to $512 for $80 and have $220 left for a three year warranty and phot and video software.
of course you lose the ability to run final cut, but windows have faster rendering video apps like power director, and the difference in speed between the 8th gen and 10th gen cpu/gpu is very noticeable.

The MacBook Pro still is much faster in editing benchmarks because of it’s dedicated hardware encoder/decoder (The T2 chip). Not the mention the screen is bright, more accurate and supports Wide colour which the surface doesn’t. The MacBook Pro also has faster storage allowing you to playback RAW footage without rencoding

@@VibesInMotion the 10th gen processor have encoding rendering and other video enhancements even apple t2 chip, (which is mostly a security chip that hampers repairs by third parties and an encryption chip), simply cannot compete with.
You can read about them on intel website.
Of course apps will have to be written to take care of them, and they will, and apple themselves will soon use these chips and as shown above, they are substantially faster in major synthetic benchmark apps that test video and cpu, as Max has just shown you.
However, can you show us those cross platform editing apps where the 8th gen macbook pro beats the surface pro, both with i5 and 8gb rams.
I have no problem admitting error, truth always is better.
Max himself said the surface screen was brighter, if I heard him correctly, has a taller aspect ratio for more usable space which you can clearly see, he failed to mention it has full touch and stylus support which can greatly increase the speed and accuracy of both photo and video editing.
Both are color accurate in srgb, the internet standard, Apple has a higher dcip rating, and that does not mean by any stretch that they both cannot do color accurate work, I think one was near 80% and one was near 100%, there is also adobe color space he did not mention, and of course, you can calibrate these screens for even better consistency.
For professional wedding/photographers ,take a photo on a usbc stick to the apple store and microsoft store, or best buy and load your photo on there and see if it meets your standards.
But my main point is if you are doing really serious work, you will do like most, and have a dedicated 4K color accurate monitor at your home or office, which will not only be better for color, but give you more space on screen and for editing, and dual screens for greatly increasing the speed and accuracy of your work flow.
Not to mention on the surface you are never worrying about the keyboard going bad, and have peace knowing you can at any time increase your ssd size yourself for cheap will give you more peace of mind.
For track-pad Apple is unmatched, I am using one now, but just like the screen, both are more than capable of doing a great job, same with the speakers, the macbook is clearer, but both do a great job.
In every benchmark I have seen, the surface is faster, but again both can and will do a good job, and even though the macbook does not have a touch screen, the latest cpu/gpu/ upgradeable ssd/ reliable keyboard/cost $300 more, stylus touch support/magsafe style fast charging/usba,
It can still do a great job, and has the ace of tb3, better trakpad, apple stores everywhere for support, more color accurate screen, is smaller, but slightly heavier, runs final cut and logic/garageband exclusively, and the biggie, it can also run windows, both companies make solid hardware and have great customer support, both machines look sexy, are light and small and are up to the task of excellent photo and video editing.
Get the one that fits your needs best, and that is usually based on a mac or pc preference rather than just hardware, and on what brand phone or tablet you may also have.
Based on Intel's Gen11 graphics architecture, the integrated GPUs come with built-in support for VESA's Adaptive Sync standard - a first for Intel graphics.
According to Intel, the increases in graphics performance with this generation of chips should allow for smooth 1080p gaming in games like Fortnite and Dirt Rally 2, along with more efficient "4K video editing and photo processing".
The final big addition with the 10th Gen is the inclusion of a dedicated instruction set, Deep Learning Boost, for accelerating neural networks and AI workloads. The company claims up to 1 teraflop of GPU engine compute performance for "sustained, high-throughput inference applications like video stylization, analytics and real-time video."
The company has also included a dedicated engine for background AI tasks like voice processing and noise suppression.
Intel says it expects 35 new laptop and 2-in-1 designs to debut with 10th Gen Ice Lake chips through the end of the year.
We've already seen a preview of some of these, including Dell's new XPS 13 2-in-1 7390. Outside of laptops, expect the 10th Gen "Ice Lake" range to debut for other portions of the PC market, including desktops, over the next year.

@@Tigerex966 Max didn't actually do any tests of the actual exact brightness, other sources say the MacBook Pro 13 inch is far brighter(518nit vs 416.9nit), more colour accurate with a DeltaE max of 2.8 vs the far worse display of Surface laptop's DeltaE max of 6.64. (Source Notebookcheck) The MBP also features support for the rec.2020 colour space which is becoming increasingly important for content creation for newer platforms.
As for the power of the surface vs the MacBook Pro, there haven't been any tests that I could find comparing the 4 core cpu in the surface vs the 4 core cpu in the MacBook Pro, but the 4 core i7-1065G7 in the 15 inch surface which is more powerful was compared MacBook Pro 13 inch and lost. The MacBook Pro 13 Inch was able to transcode the 4K test file in 14:42 compared to the laptop with 16GB ram and the 4 core i7-1065G7 which took 24:49. (Source LaptopMag) The MacBook Pro is still far less powerful than that 4 core processor but it was still able to best it in encoding. The Surface Laptop just can't compete with the MacBook Pro in terms of video work and the MacBook Pros lead on the Surface will only increase when using high complexity footage such as HEVC and HEIF.
Edit: One last point to add on
"The company has also included a dedicated engine for background AI tasks like voice processing and noise suppression."
The MacBook Pro has something similar to this in the T2 chip which handles Siri and active noise cancelling
      " upgradeable ssd"
The surface doesn't have a user replaceable ssd and right now Microsoft doesn't allow upgrades at their stores. If you decide you really want an upgrade of your storage you lose your warranty so it might as well be a soldered SSD

In my opinion this kind of comparison does not make any sense... People buy Mac for MacOs experience. In other case people used to work with Windows or Gamers will never buy Mac. You should be comparing machines with the same OS.
