Dell XPS 13 7390 (Late 2019) Review

  • Lisa Gade reviews the refreshed Dell XPS 13 for late 2019. The design and display offerings are the same as the previous generation, but the 13.3” laptop makes the jump to Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake processors. You can get it with a 6 core i7 CPU, which is pretty impressive for an Ultrabook this thin and light. The Dell has WiFi 6, a Microsoft Precision trackpad, full HD and 4K touch screen options and Thunderbolt 3 ports. It’s available in 3 colors and starts around $949.

    Thanks, Lisa. Once again, you nail notebook reviews like absolutely nobody else. It was because of you that I ended up buying the Yoga 910 (4k/16GB) a few years ago. Anyway... XPS seems nice, and I believe the best value may be the FHD display, but one should definitely get 16GB these days in my opinion. Personally I would go with 4K and set everything to 2x scaling so everything looks large but very sharp still.

    Here’s a hint for removing the bottom cover-after removing the screws, place a suction cup toward the front edge (the edge opposite the hinges). With the suction cup flat on the bottom case, turn the suction cup one quarter turn or so to create a good grip, squeeze the handles together (if that is the type of suction cup you are using), and lift. It should come up easily and you likely won’t break tabs or dent or mark the sides. You may have to to push toward the front edge while lifting, but the bottom should come up easily.

      That’s unfortunately an Intel mess. Launching Comet Lake and Ice Lake both marketed as 10th gen. One for cheaper laptop the other for the most premium one (in order to address few orders with their 10nm capacity). I bet this one has the TDP set to 25W (or something even higher in actual consumption) while the Ice Lake is set to 15W seen the design of the 2-1 model.

    The battery life seems to have improved a lot on this laptop, I'm not sure if this is due to Dell updates or the "machine learning". I'm getting around 5 hours+ these days which is really good (i have the 4K version). You know you are in the premier league when the biggest complaint people have about your laptop is that the screen is overkill. I would say the high price tag is justified. If you brought a cheap HP, it would end up broken after a few years. I'm confident I'll still be using this Dell 5 years down the line.

      @sohn7767 Před 4 lety +6

      Here’s what I know:
      i9 9900K
      The first digit represents the generation (or first 2 Digits from now on because intel has released their 10th gen cpus). So when you see something like a i7 27XX, you can tell it’s an outdated processor since it’s 8 generations behind.
      The second digit just stands for what cpu it is.
      9900K = i9
      9700K = i7
      And so on (at least from what I have picked up)
      Whiskey Lake, Comet Lake, Ice lake just stand for what architecture the cpu are on. The new ice lake special because it introduces 10 nm intel cpus.
      I don’t know a lot about the rest. The U at the end means it‘s for ultrabooks. K CPUs are overclockable (not K exclusive i think). KS is preoverclocked.
      Anyone correct me if I’m wrong please.

What I dislike most about the laptop I have now is that it runs really hot, and the fan blows loud that participants can't hear at the time. And when I'm recording a video of my screen for courses, it has the fan noise running in the background. The keyboard is also really loud when we are on calls (MS Surface Pro 3 btw).
