    Great video! Head over Heels is underrated, yet it has got the most addictive shifts and chorus builds. Fits in completely with ABBA's long line of super-powered singles, yet didn't become the hit it deserved.

    I LOVED the video because it was so different from anything else they have done. It allowed Frida to show off her talents as a complete entertainer and not simply a marvelous singer. I agree that it would have been next to impossible to find the location where they filmed in the building by yourself. But I would have asked some of the elderly store workers who may have been in the building when it was shot and they would know.

    Loved the video for Head Over Heels but never saw it when it was released (by that time in Australia, Abba were rarely promoted anywhere)! I first saw it on this video collection, ABBA 1974 - 1982 Music Biography Virgin Video VHS, in the late 1980’s and, to be honest, even though the quality was a little poor, I was so excited to have it as there were a number of video clips I had never seen! So exciting to think that things only improved after this point!! I really enjoyed seeing all the places where this clip was filmed - such outstanding research and delivery, BB!

  • @DiegoMartinezDP
    @DiegoMartinezDP Před rokem +10

    ‘Head Over Heels’ in general has a soft place in my heart as it was the intro synth line that opened the ABBA Gold VHS, and I always wondered ‘wait, what’s THAT song?’.
    I do agree that it’s ABBA’s funniest video and it has got some iconic shots, from the two girls singing together to Frida’s bumping into Lasse Halström (was Sylvester Stallone inspired by this when he bumped into John Travolta in “Staying Alive”?) and of course, the over-the-top fashion show.
    I distinctly remember a layout on the International ABBA Magazine (issue 9 to be exact) where Frida talks about all the looks from the video, all of them so different from each other: the red lacquered chintz with gold accents (‘I was a little doubtful about this dress’), the Spanish-Arabic flavored dress with a gauze hat from Frida’s own wardrobe (she picked it up during a New York trip), the countryside white dress designed by Philippe Salvet and the dreamy silk pink outfit created by her friend Lillebil Ankarcrona.
    It’s a bit of a bittersweet affair, the fact that it’s such a lively video and it’s Lasse’s final one before the 40 year ‘break’. Full circle moment indeed!

    2:07-2:15...Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to contact either Lasse Halstrom or Frida, as they are likely the only 2 who really know if it was planned or if Frida really slipped.
    Given Frida's sense of humor, it wouldn't surprise me if it was an accident when it happened, but then they watched it, thought it was funny, and decided to keep it in the video.

    • @bobbysbrother137
      @bobbysbrother137  Před rokem +1

      I think that the low camera-angle in that shot may indicate that it was intentional, to "focus" on the fall. I have no idea how to contact either of the two, but this is a question worth asking for sure if opportunity comes.

Commercially Head Over Heels wasnt hugely successful in the UK and sadly I don't remember ever seeing the video on UK TV. I think it was all a little rushed to get The Visitors album finished and out before christmas 1981. The first single 'One Of Us' was literally released at the same time. Maybe all would have done better had the single, and perhaps a second single been released prior to the album. Its a great video.

    Yeah, the 'slip'. I guess they must have rehearsed the scene once or twice so maybe already knew the step was icy. If acted, it's very convincing and she nearly did go 'head over heels' lol, so they included it in the video. Sharp eyed fans will also spot one of the film crew getting accidently caught on camera as Frida dashes through the clothes racks. As a song 'Head Over Heels' was some light relief on what is quite a dark album. But ABBA being ABBA, the melancholy was never far away with those downturned final notes.

    "Head Over Heels" is my least favourite song on "The Visitors" - that means, the track is brillant, cause it's my favourite album of all time.:) The video wasn't shown that often on German TV in 1982, the single failed the Top 10 for the first time since "So Long" I suppose. The clip is light hearted, but to me the "One Of Us"-Clip was ahead of its time, anticipating the "Vlog"-aesthetic of the 2010s, and the "The Day Before You Came"-Clip was heartbreaking, so "HoH" falls a bit flat. But it's as always fascinating to see the original locations!

      Yes, let’s hope for all videos coming in 4K HD. The standard quality is disastrous by now. Unfortunately, as far as I’m aware, all videos from 1981-82 were shot and/or edited on videotape only, so for those we’ll have to be happy with HD upscales (like they did for “Chiquitita”).

      I think ‘the day before you came’ and ‘under attack’ were done on film, as they have that ‘film’ quality like ‘the winner takes it all’, ‘super trouper’ and ‘happy new year’/felicidad.
      Agree that its a shame that the vids from ‘the visitors’ were only done on videotape but im still surprised as how poor the tape quality is- except for ‘no hay a quien culpar’. If we see these videos in the same quality as ‘no hay…’ and ‘dick cavett meets abba’, ill be very happy

    Until CZcams came along, I had never seen this video and thought it quite entertaining. Firstly here in Australia, When All Is Said and Done was the follow up single to One Of Us - I don't think Head Over Heels was a single here. Secondly, the showing of videos was virtually controlled by one TV program, Countdown, and its host, Ian "Molly" Meldrum. He broke ABBA in 1975 by showing Mamma Mia, but by 1982 he chose to ignore them, not even showing One Of Us even though they showed a snippet of it being No. 3 in the UK. So both One Of Us and When All… barely charted (#48 and #81 respectively). If you weren't shown on Countdown, you had virtually no hope of a hit.
    Any international act touring Australia made a point of appearing "live" (miming) on Countdown for this reason. Except ABBA - when they came on a promo visit in March 1976, they made the mistake of doing an exclusive special for a rival network, which had unprecedented ratings, but I'm sure would have rankled Molly who effectively discovered them. Then when they toured in March 1977, they repeated their mistake with no visit to Countdown. So they went from the unprecedented scenes of adulation and Arrival selling 960,000 copies (to 14 million people) to The Album selling 50,000 copies! They must have wondered what had happened, and I'm sure Molly's control over the music market had a lot to do with it. Stig Anderson was a shrewd operator, but he overlooked the power of Countdown in Australia.

    Just a little side note. Could you address the controversy, which is raging on social media these days, about the similarity between the synth intro riff to GimmeX3 and a supposedly previous Indonesian folk song? We'd love to hear your thoughts about it!! 🙏

    • @bobbysbrother137
      @bobbysbrother137  Před rokem +2

      I have no idea what is raging on social media and where. But it's always possible. There are similarities to contemporary or traditional songs in riffs and melodies on other ABBA songs, for example "Ring Ring", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Little Things", "Don't Shut Me Down", and "Ode To Freedom", but other than that, I'm no musical expert. Let me know more specifics about the Indonesian folk song. Thanks!

    Thanks for this interesting & insiteful look into Head Over Heels. Please don't take this as an insult as I know English isn't your first language, but you pronounced the word 'sewing' (sömnad) in the way we pronounce the word 'suing' (stämma) several times in the video & it slightly confused me as I didn't have the captions on & wasn't looking at the video at those moments, but then quickly realised what you meant when I wound back & actually watched those parts with the captions on too. I hope it helps to know that the word 'sew' is actually pronounced 'so' 🙂

It has been pointed out by some viewers now, and I said - well, 'suing' might have been the job that Björn wanted to do (studying business and law), lol. No, I certainly meant 'sewing' (pronounced like 'going'), and of course didn't mean to irritate. Always funny to still learn some things. Again, thanks for the nice words & for watching. Cheers!

    I loved the Head Over Heels video. At that time,I’d sensed a change in ABBA, clearly manifested in One Of Us. Head Over Heels for me wiped out the sadness of One Of Us but I was truly frustrated at the British chart, punishing it to never go beyond number 25. To me that was a peculiar intervention by the British deep state who was busy promoting a cheap knock off group-Bucks Fizz. Attack me all you want, I’ll be proven right.🎉🎉🎉😅😅😅

      A small fraction of it originally appeared as part of a full-length ABBA Stockholm location video, the door and staircase. But, as with "Arrival", I wanted to create a standalone video dedicated to the entire music video of "Head Over Heels", so 85% of it was newly created and build around the old footage.

    For me, the reason this video hasn't aged as well as some of ABBA's other promos is, number one, the single was a flop. And two, Lasse's decision to use videotape for this one and One Of Us make both videos look a little washed out and, well, lower budget than usual. Not to mention the versions that most of todays audiences have seen here on CZcams suffer from uploading anomalies such as motion judder. I am so very hopeful that whoever is responsible for the recent 4K restorations of some of ABBA's key promotional videos will do something about these two. All the time and effort spent on these cringey lyric videos, when they could be updating ABBA's most important visual artifacts! That's just my humble opinion though ☺

Glad I never saw the video until decades later as it's one of those videos that actually ruins the song! Bjorn's pantomime of "who me" is the only stand out moment - it's actually funny and you can hear the words. The fashion isn't palatable to an American audience. It's all "just no!" lol. Head Over Heals is a top tier ABBA masterpiece and The VIsitors is their crowned Jewel. The song and fans deserve much better.
