One of the best jobs I’ve ever had has been working in an animal shelter. Being around so many loving dogs and cats has been a huge boost to my mental health, but I’ve seen my fair share of instances where an animal is put through traumatic abuse and/or just abandoned.
We had a dog dropped on our doorstep a couple weeks ago by people that claimed they found him running around downtown. He was dirty, had sores on one of his legs and in his ears, and he drank three bowls of water so fast he threw up. We have to call animal control in these situations, and the person who came to get him told us his personality didn’t line up with the narrative he was a stray. They said most likely he’d been isolated in a room stuck with his own pee and poop.
They got him checked out by a vet and was given a clean bill of health, we lined up a foster home for him, and has been doing so well there that he’ll most likely get adopted by his fosters. A happy ending in this case, but the way some people treat animals is sickening and evil. Nothing amusing about torturing animals, period.

Shouldn't you as a person with experience in rescue know to limit water for a little while when they inhale the first bowl? I assume that for some it's less about being perceived as poor as it is about having an extremely rigid mentality and being unable to adjust to any kind of changes at all. They calculated how much they owed beforehand, and you offering a discount last minute threw that off. For a well-adjusted person that would be a tiny mental blip, a second of "Oh... ah! Thanks!" as they recalculated. But some people just cannot deviate from their initial plans at all, or it'll cause meltdowns. Psychological inflexibility is a symptom of many mental illnesses and also substance abuse. Cognitive decline can also exacerbate these tendencies if, as you say, it's mostly older folks having this issue.

I lived with a guy like that once, who burst in rage over stupidly little things, and then once we talked him out of his rage, we'd realise that he felt wronged throughout the day but didnt talk about it, sometimes he was even right to feel wronged. Her patients usually around 400 or 500 Lbs are now pushing 600 and even 750. The facilities usually built for larger patients aren't keeping up. Just recently she had to coordinate with a nearby zoo that had an MRI big enough for her patient. Not only that but she has to coordinate with myltiple departments as it usually takes 8 to 9 people to move these patients and mobilize them. This breaks her heart because her patients are people and the facilities she has been given do not help them feel that way.

Many people think anti-diet culture means eat boatloads of whatever you want, and the amount of shame I've gotten for counting carbs and turning down food that could be harmful to me is exhausting. I'm embarrassed to eat in front of people when the only way to get them off my case is to disclose that I'm monitoring a health condition. That's problematic in itself because not everyone has to have a health issue to not over-indulge. SO MANY people do not know the difference between being on a diet and having healthy nutrition, and I can see how companies stand to benefit from the average person not understanding that the nutrition label is there to help you enjoy all types of food mindfully.

It helped me get care for kidney failure, because other doctors were convinced that edema could only be because I was fat, and not that my kidneys were shutting down. It's also why I got a transplant, because doctors that didn't believe that would have forced me to lose more weight, and the time that would have taken would have made me so sick I wouldn't have been suitable for the surgery anymore. But whenever people say things like "AI is taking our jobs" or that it's "assaulting human creativity", I'm reminded of factory workers complaining about industrial machinery taking their jobs, and many have certainly complained about modern tools to enhance or modify audio, video or images.
Basically, whenever there's new technology to make something cheaper, easier and more accessible, there are people complaining that it takes away jobs or that it's "fake".

I mean if you're on a low salt diet you'll probably pick up what's good and bad pretty quickly if you make the effort. Not sure warning labels (where companies will find every loophole) are the answer here.

I used to be over 250 pounds at my heaviest, and I am now 142 pounds at my lowest. I didn't have to go on a diet, I just finally was able to afford a living, and as such eat things that were better for me and eat less since I was not as down as before. I'm pretty sure the original meaning behind "no bad foods" or the concept of food shaming was exactly this; that low income folks often don't have access, monetarily or geographically, to healthy foods and it's shitty to shame them for that when its a systematic failing more than a personal one. I've also seen it come up fairly reasonably in regards to young and/or autistic kids refusing to eat anything but particular junk foods. When it is literally junk food or no food, then yeah, junk food is the better option. And generally having shame around food is unhealthy and a barrier to improving your diet, but that doesn't mean all food is equal. It annoys me so much when reasonable ideas get co-opted and all the nuance goes straight out the window making them no longer reasonable.

Not sure if its open to everyone or just 21+ since most of it was alcohol. And it's obviously not fully automatic since it has attendants at both ends. The last time I went I got charged for croissants I didn’t even touch. Luckily I was able to dispute it but we always have to heavily scrutinize receipts (when we receive them hours later). For example we’ve been charged for 24 oz cereal box when we only grabbed a 16 oz. Or in store the price is on sale for $3.50 and then we’d get charged $5.99. I could go on and on. To the point where I only go if I’m just buying a handful of items and I take pictures of all the prices before leaving.

The shopping carts even have a little holder for the scanner so you got your hands free!
Process is: Swipe your member card at the entrance. In a couple seconds, a slot on the scanner shelf lights up to show "this is your scanner". Bring it with you and scan wares with a little trigger.
At the register, put your scanner in one of the slots, go up to the self checkout, swipe your member card again and proceed with payment!

As someone who comes from the other end of the weight spectrum and was severely underweight as a kid and still struggles sometimes to eat enough, I think it’s important to remember that the best diet for each person is gonna differ. In high school I often would skip breakfast because I had to be at school so early in the morning. So I would eat a small chocolate muffin during 1st hour and other students would make comments about my “unhealthy” breakfast. Those muffins were one of the few foods I could eat in the mornings without feeling sick and at the end of the day for me, eating something, even if it was unhealthy was better then not eating anything until our lunch at 1:00. I don’t like what the big food companies are doing trying to jump on this anti diet train and using influencers to lie to us about their products. But we need to stop the judgement around food and bodies. Everyone’s journey is their own and no too journeys will look the same. Instead of following all the trends and influencers. Agreed. I have a chronic GI illness, am extremely FODMAP intolerant, and have a history of disordered eating resulting from food anxiety. The foods that are considered “healthy” for most people, such as raw fruits and vegetables and whole grains, are too difficult for me to digest. And before anyone accuses me of making excuses to eat junk food, I can’t eat most ready-made foods either because they almost always contain ingredients I can’t have, like onion and garlic. Almost everything I eat I make from scratch or from very basic ingredients. I’m constantly struggling to keep my weight up so I try to eat foods that are calorie-dense. It’s triggering to say the least to see conversations around “healthy” eating constantly centered on weight loss. I’d like to see more recognition that what is considered “healthy” is very individual and dependent on your circumstances, and that there is no definition of “healthy” food that fits everyone. “Food shaming” is just as bad and counterproductive as body shaming imo.

I am a plus size woman and got to my worst weight because of 2 poorly treated mental health conditions and an emotionally abusive relationship.
Due to a health scare, I too started to work on my weight (as well as dropped my ex for the energy vampire he was). Part of that was taking care of my mental health which helped me go from 360+ to 320. But now my weight-loss has stalled and it's looking like my only option is to do something like Wegovy, but of course, insurance and supply shortages make it a non-starter. I'm already dealing with the Adderall shortage fight, I don't need another. But hey I guess me preventing going blind is an inconvenience to the drug companies.
And the anti-diet bs food companies are doing are part of the reason I got where I am. The additives in a lot of prepackaged foods have unknown ramifications to the health of the average human, but when your brain literally struggles with impulse control it's easier to grab prepackaged empty calories than go through the effort of cooking an objectively healthy meal that takes just as good.

Also shame on the dietitians that decided to promote products with these companies, like they’re suppose to be scientists helping people with things like eating disorders challenge and recover from their problems, not add to them. They are suppose to be using science to show how diet culture talk is false, not be leaning into companies that helped promote slanted dialogues that lead to many of the diet culture stigmas we have today.

The main issue with diet culture is people doing fad diets. People will do a fad diet for six months, then give up on it and go back to their usual unhealthy eating habits. Just stop eating so much junk food and you'll be fine.

@@NomastiAfricanWarlord I mean sure fad diets are definitely part of the problem. Labeling food as “junk” food is also kind of part of the problem. Like sure there’s some foods you should not solely rely on for nutrients or over indulge in, and also that doesn’t mean they are junk. Also it’s not always as straight forward for people with EDs depending on the type to simple “not eat so much ‘junk’ food.” For some the “junk” food is the only safe food they have.

Your comment got stolen by a bot and was shared in the "Yesterday, Today" segment. You should try to message the PDS team to tell them to be more careful. I'm gonna try also but may be helpful if it comes from someone who actually had their comment co-opted

@@isaac_marcus yea I noticed that too. I figured it was maybe them trying to be polite and hide user name maybe, as I couldn’t find the bot post. If you’re seeing a bot did in fact steal it though then yea definitely will send something to the text line though to tell them to be mindful of that stuff, cause yea I was super confused by that.

@RadicalLatias yeah I did come back to this vid and saw it, but I reported the comment as spam so maybe it actually got taken down already? But yeah you should message the text line. I also tried emailing them with screenshots, and left a comment on today's video
