That sounds pretty much right... Of course his Murder Trial did end up with him being found Innocent, and I put a great deal of blame for that on the Prosecution... The Glove, The Killer piece of Evidence did not fit his hand... WELL OF COURSE NOT.. The man had Millions, He wasn't going to risk doing the deed directly himself!!!
The Prosecutors totally screwed that case! I had not hate for him... But also no love for him... At least now the families of those who passed can rest knowing there is some kind of justice - far too late but at least it finally came!

On the "payments for mothers who neglect their children" story. Phil and the sources he looked into are correct there is so much nuance to these claims of neglect.
I'm a social worker and most times we look into a case of neglect it's because the mother had to go to work to pay for rent or food and left her children alone or in her car. The lack of food is because of a lack of funds to feed her children. It's a poverty loop that makes it look like these mothers failed.
The program I run has funds called "barrier removal funds" that are used to assist families in having a smoother ride through this road called life. It's a beautiful thing to see families strive when government funds are targeted to the actual issues of generational poverty.

I think neglect is such a loaded word. Most of the time it isn’t intentional. It’s just parents who need to work but can’t afford after school childcare. I’ve had students who are home alone or watching younger siblings while their parents work. That is technically neglect but it’s also a familiar situation for many millennials and older gen-z kids.
I think some neglect cases should end in parents receiving more resources and support. They are usually due to a lack of resources as a society we should be looking for signs like this then reaching out more.
It is traumatic for children to be separated from their parents. We should be trying to avoid it as much as possible.

I was a regional director for years for a well known fast food chain and currently work in food tech. I've worked in hospitality my whole career from Michelin star restaurants to food tech and as en executive.
The resistance to adjusting profit margins in favor of fair wages is troubling. Many fast-food companies maintain net revenue levels well above 60%, with some even reaching 80%.
It's not unreasonable to suggest that these companies could afford to allocate a portion of their profits towards better compensation for their employees .
The fact that this is even an issue is ridiculous and these companies are intentionally making this a social issue is purely to not have to cut net revenu.
This is why I ended up going into business for myself and started a painting/decking company. I could not stand making hundreds of dollars for a company that paid me like 1% of hourly sales when I was literally cooking and making all of the food sold. I also pay the guys who now do the paining/staining and pressure washing 2.5x the standard starting wage in the area(4x state min wage) because that let's me do jobs that make more money.
I have always said that we need to figure out a way to link profits to wages. Like minimum wage needs to be a set dollar amout OR a percentage of a companies profits for the prior year, which ever is greater. With some companies even .o1% of profit is double or triple current minimum wage. Its crazy that they try to claim they cannot afford it.

I have a very controversial opinion: all full time jobs should pay a living wage. If someone is working 40 hours a week. They should be able to live off of it.

I was a single father of three young children after divorcing my now ex. I was not in poverty but money was extremely tight. My middle child had started kindergarten but I couldn’t find an affordable daycare for the morning, oh the days of 1/2 day kindergarten. He stayed in the apartment alone till an alarm went off I had set and then he went to the bus. I didn’t know what else to do but I had CPS called on me by the school social worker for neglect. It killed me to be seen as a neglectful parent when I was working to provide for my family. People who have never had money problems will never understand how hard the simple things can be without money.
The irony of a soft handed millionaire saying a hard working fast food worker is getting too much money for how hard they work is just baffling. Jesse you have never known a hard days work. There are millions of children who deserve what you make more than you do.

We all know the skit, at the end of the ordering process you are asked by most places if you would like to round up to the nearest dollar to donate to (blank) foundation, our location is the local Dell Children's Hospital.
So many well dressed people seem to come in hordes every Sunday morning, and yet it is consistently the day I have the least donations 🤨

I’m from Australia and the minimum wage for me working at McDonald’s was already $20. It’s an extremely physical job and STILL not enough to comfortably live off of with the cost of living these days. Anyone who sits in a chair for a living should not be debating what a manual labor job “deserves.”

Someone told me that the bigwigs like jim have 6 weeks of PTO, and 6 weeks of medical, and that they can earn comp time if they go over a certain number of hours. So, he probably works less than 40 weeks, even if you include weekends.
I like to remind people that when my grandmother worked at McDonald’s in California as a teenager, her minimum wage would be nearly $40 an hour today. She paid for school and bought her own house in Orange County before she turned 21.
So $20 an hour is still half the value of California’s minimum wage 70 years ago.

I believed your comment so I wanted to look into it more and I can not seem to find a year that adds up to close to $40 an hour by todays currency (looking up US minimum wage then going to an infatuation calculator) I figured maybe she wasn’t paid minimum wage? Oh just saw the “70 years” ago part I must have missed it, ooppsss. Well the minimum wage in 1954 for $0.75 an hour which equates to $8.71 today. People could afford things more easy back then because things were cheaper.

I’m 35 years old. I have worked fast food, in retail, as a janitor, 6 years in the military, and now in the nuclear field working next to some of the most powerful devices man has ever invented. Fast food was the most taxing on my mental and physical health out of everything I just listed. The day to day stresses of dealing with awful customers, sweating my ass off by a hot oven, and coming home covered in grease burns and smelling like pizza left me completely drained. And, doing that for federal min wage had me stressing about how I was going to afford my next volley of bills.
Those stressors compound to an utterly hopeless outlook on life. People should be paid a living wage for that job. Fast food is skilled labor. Jesse Watters needs to be de-platformed and stripped of his wealth.

"Taxing" and difficulty are two different things. A job can be easy and soul-crushing at the same time.
The most difficult & demanding job I've had was while I was in the military. Here's the difference, it was rewarding. It kept me going for more while my out-of-work needs were met (food, healthcare, housing, pay, PTO, etc). Fast food has a net negative return on all fronts in terms of sustaining oneself. If you live in a state, like I did, where they make Fed min wage, then good luck relying solely on that for providing for yourself.

You don't have managers breathing down your neck, cutting your breaks or hours as they feel about you causing more financial concerns, impatient people able to verbally abuse you as they please while you have to smile and remain polite and occasionally getting physically assaulted or threatened with it for things like hashbrowns being on sale. And this is every shift all day long.
So yeah, it's more stressful than a heavily regulated and white collar position.
Yeah I used to work in fast food (wasn't a large company just a type of food) and got paid $20AUD an hour for three hours. I realised after I left how underpaid I was for how much stress I had, especially because I had to deal with shitty customers especially during the tourist seasons, it was hell on Earth. Now I still work in customer service but its all cold emails and yeah I deal with stress and rude customers, but at least I don't smell gross coming home and I'm being paid minimum wage. Just slightly more than when I worked at the fast food place.

As someone who grew up in poverty, yeah we got investigated by child protective services a lot. My mum was caught between a rock and a hard place since she, at the time, couldn't work too many hours since she had 3 kids that needed day care that she couldn't afford due to not being able to work too many hours but couldn't work too many hours due to needing day care for her kids, and rinse and repeat to infinity. On top of my Dad at the time not supporting us financially for electricity or heat, I can definitely relate to the poverty and cpp investigations being related. My mum was basically forced to be negligent

If a mcdonalds worker has to make 60$ then the grocery store worker has to also make 60 or close to it. Meaning that bag of potatoes you used to buy for 2-3$ will now cost 20-30$. Then those 60$/hour end up the same as 15$/hour with where we are at now. The only real solution imo is to set laws on execs from being so stupidly greedy. Imo the real enemy to our economy is the stockmarket at the end of the day. The shareholders and execs are in bed ensuring both parties end up super wealthy in the end at any cost. As a regular employee if i did the same thing they are doing it would be considered a conflict of interest. The issue is how do you do this without landing with communism.. which will end up in the same spot down the road anyways.

The idea that a job, something we recognize someone should actively do, should require skill for the person to be paid a liveable wage is crazy.
I live with my aunt, and she has worked as a florist at a major grocery chain for over 20 years. When she started, minimum wage was $7. She now, after working there for 20 years, has been capped out at $17/hr for about 10 of those years. She was upset about minimum wages increasing to $15/hr because she argued that she worked a long time to get to $17 and now a teenager will start just $2 lower to her. The confusing part for me was how she wasn't mad at her company for only paying her $17/hr and mad because she felt the younger workers didn't deserve $15. Meanwhile, her company boasts record profits every year. It's this crabs-in-a-bucket type thinking that keeps us all from progressing. The excess wealth accumulation and consolidation from these companies needs to stop.

I did the math. If a fast food worker worked 8 hours a day for 5 days a week 52 week a year they would make $41600 a year without taxes. Removed income tax, retirement, and insurance, they are left with $39,018. Now look at the average rent in California...about $1,800 a month, so that's 21600 a year. leaving you with $17,418 to buy food, utilities, gas, everyday necessities. Yeah, what a load of crap existing is.
And considering fast food workers don't work full time, you can half the amount they make

I always tell them to Just look at dicks drive-in burgers in WA state. Starting wage is 21/hr then 26/hr after training is complete. Best healthcare in the state. 100% 401k match, and up to 28000 a year in scholarships.
Their burgers range from $2.45 - $5.30 and they can afford to pay their employees super well.

Companies have always said that they can't raise wages because they'd have to raise prices but they have already raised the cost of everything in the last couple of years and used it to make themselves richer. And now they're making even more profit by asking for tips on everything. I am tired of being told by rich people that it's ok to underpay people so severely they qualify for food stamps and can't afford a place to live.

Anyone who thinks service workers don't deserve a living wage has never been a service worker. The most draining and difficult job I've ever had was working as a waitress at a massive restaurant.

Even as an Alabama resident, the cost of living in my small town has skyrocketed over the last 5 years. The minimum price for a 1-2 story fully built home is 250,000$, which for me, a 25 year old making 16$/hr right now, is completely unreachable. It would take me saving a majority of my checks (which is impossible with my bills) for decades to afford a home of that price. I could always make payments, but they’re obviously thousands of dollars a month, with a massive down payment, and as somebody already living paycheck to paycheck essentially, I do not see myself owning a home within my life time, unless something drastically changes in my life regarding my career. It’s very disheartening knowing that if I wanted to leave Alabama one day, which I do, that I would probably get paid barely more, and would be paying more for my living situation as well. Sad times, y’all.
Working in fast food is the hardest job I ever had and since then Ive been a DirecTv installs Tech and now I do maintenance on aircraft.
When I was a kid my mom was investigated for child neglect a couple of times, because I had kinda shitty clothes, I was already on free lunch, never went on field trips, and a bunch of other things the busy-bodies in the school didn't like. That $500 (or even $200 back then) would have helped a lot. No exaggeration, it could have changed my entire life trajectory.

@@Y2JermsTruth, I work at a theatre and my friends were shocked to hear that at most my hours get up to 36 hrs so then I (and other workers) don’t get protections and healthcare that we would otherwise qualify for.
I was going to mention this... most companies keeping their employees part time, 20-25 maybe 28 hrs if you are a good employee... anything to keep the employee from getting health benefits

As a former fast food worker who made their way to an assistant management position; it's crazy to me when people who talk for a living say that I wouldn't deserve to be paid when this guy wouldn't survive a single lunch rush.

For me, if the complaint from people is that the restaurant may shut down/go bankrupt. That's the restaurant's problem. If a business cannot function without paying their staff a livable wage, that business should rightly shut down.

Fast food doesn't normally pay 40 hour work weeks. Unless you're managerial staff you're getting part time hours. That's to avoid having to provide you with benefits of any sort.

I’ve never understood why the government takes kids from parents when the neglect is clearly caused by lack of money, then gives a complete stranger the money needed to take care of the children. 💯 so many times 'neglect' actually means 'the parent(s) didn't have enough money to feed the children' or 'the parent(s) didn't have enough money for childcare and had to choose between losing their job or leaving the children at home unsupervised'
Having been around foster kids it's usually not about the money it's about the POS parents ignoring their children so they can get drunk or high.

Neglect- there should definitely be different labels for different types of neglect because absolutely there are loving parents who fall under that label due to income. Being at work without child care, not having food or proper clothes due to income etc.

Hi! Former Latch Key Kid here. My mom was a single mother and a teacher. She taught me and I quickly grew up, mentally to understand that she needed me to work with her to make it happen. I was lucky CPS never got wind of it but actually the entire neighborhood had similar situations., it was a known secret to watch out for certain kids along with your own. It got so bad she had to send me states away to her family so I would have the resources a child needs. I wish we had this program back then. I might have so many abandonment/mental issues now.
I feel this entirely. I'm trying so hard to make rent and bills and put food on the table for my kid, and I know she sees how stressed out I am just to make it work. She's such a good kid, smart. Quick as a whip and always willing to lend me a hand. But I feel guilty constantly that I'm not doing enough or giving her what she deserves, and am so worried that her seeing this struggle will leave a lasting negative impression on her. ❤ praying for you and yours...
When my single mom was working overnight as an LPN I was left alone all night from age 11 onward. I cooked dinner for us before mom went to work, did my homework on my own, put myself to bed, and got myself up and ready for school in the morning.

Here in rural NE where the cost of living is much less than West Coast and our McDicks here is advertising starting wage at $18.25/hr and they still can't fill all the shifts.
My wife works in the food service industry. She worked at some food chains and restaurants for about 6yrs and quit those to take a Barista job where the customers are a little more tolerable and her schedule is flexible. She heard about her McDonald’s $20 an hour increase and she still says she would rather stay at her Local coffee shop making less than go back to that soul sucking job. I remember her going through some tough mental trauma working In that type of environment. I remember her pain. I was so concerned for her mental state I didn’t want to leave her alone for too long, she would come home in tears sometimes. Fast food restaurants are the worst places to work at, those customers are some of most cruel selfish people. To anyone who touching it out for that $20 an hour, I wish you good luck and please always remember to focus on the happy memories outside of work! You brave soul!

As a kid who was in temporary foster care, it sucks. I was 5 at the time, which was a long time ago more than 30 years, but it has stuck with me. It was one of the most traumatic times of my life. So anything that keeps more kids out of the system sounds like a win to me.
I don’t understand how we justify removing kids because the parents can’t afford them & giving money to another family to care for them.

My husband still hasn't told me everything that happened to him while he was in foster care as a kid and what he has told me was absolutely horrific. I don't wish foster care on anyone. I totally agree with giving struggling parents the means to take better care of their children if it means keeping them out of the foster system.

I'll be real.. When I first heard about the 20 dollar minimum wage, I actually felt that was a bit high too. But then I was informed about the avarage rent in California, and I completely flipped to "Holy sh*t, 20 dollars is just the barest of minimums they could give them"
I find it weird for any working class person to think the money any other working class person is making is too much for a job they aren’t themselves doing, or in general.
With the Vietnam story the scale of the crime should be noted, that you’re looking at 5-10% of Vietnams GDP. Which is huge, equivalent to 2.5 trillion in the US. The amount of money she took is enough to economically cripple the country. That level of fraud kills people.
I believe it's more like 2% of GDP, but that's still an insane amount. Millions of Vietnamese live on incredibly low wages in poverty and somehow individuals are worth an actual whole percentage of the country's GDP. Shouldn't happen anywhere, especially a country that loves showing off the hammer and sickle in the streets of its cities.

I'm so glad you're talking about the psylocibin research :) I was actually pre-approved for the testing group! The research was in Maryland but I found their ad pamphlet in North Carolina, in our Buddhist center. The research was looking for volunteers with experience in meditation because they wanted to see how psychedelic mushrooms would affect the brain during meditative state, etc. At that point I was studying Buddhism for several years and I previously had experience with ayahuasca also, so I guess that made me a good candidate because they called me back. I would have agreed it to it, but they didn't offer enough compensation to cover gas money and tbh I didn't want to drive like 4-5 hours to Maryland to trip for several hours in a lab, and then drive back home. I kind of regret not doing it now lol.

Yesterday as I was walking to Starbucks some woman in a car was screaming as she pulled away from the window nearly hitting me. “20 dollars an hour for people who don’t even know how to do their job” I don’t know what happened but honest to god that 20 dollars is to put up with that exact attitude. Period.
I live in Seattle and they recently implemented an ordinance to require food delivery apps to pay a minimum wage of $26.50 to their employees and rather than taking the financial hit, they’ve up-charged the consumers an extra $10-$15 dollars while lobbying to hell and back to try and frame the narrative as “Seattle is anti-consumer!”
These companies would rather sink money into heavy lobbying than actually pay their employees and they’re able to get away with it because too many Americans see a minimum wage of $26.50 and just get upset as how little their “better” job is paying by comparison.
The base Min Wage here is $20 and I definitely feel like there is a conversation to be had both in regards to the specific number they settled on and whether career-based minimum wages are even a good idea, but I feel like too many people misplace their anger and get mad at those less fortunate than them rather than realizing that “nah man, you should be getting paid more too”
The problem there is that the buying power becomes irrelevant. Companies will never eat that because they're evil. Let's say you're working at an office with a degree making $20 and im working at Burger King making $12. I suddenly get a raise to $20 due to the new laws. Not only are we making the same with you having student loans now, but BK isn't eating the loss and raises the prices. Your office argues for higher wages successfully and goes to $28 an hour. Every other place does the same. Walmart ups their prices to not eat the cost, mechanics do the same, everyone does. Now you have the same buying power as before, if not less. And now we're all fucked. This doesn't work.

Here in NZ we don't tip, but now our new POS systems have a prompt when doing the payments to put a tip. Some of them though they ask you in the same manner to pay for the surcharge for your card usage.

When the minimum wage was created, it was meant to be a living wage. The idea is that no one that working 40 hours a week should be struggling to meet their basic needs. It was meant to be enough for a single person to afford a home and the living expenses of a family of four. So, we already have a serious problem as Congress has allowed the minimum wage to fall behind expenses along with everyone else's wages. The rise in the cost of living has dramatically outpaced what people are able to earn, working a single full-time job. The only thing worse than this absolute failure on the part of politicians to maintain the concept behind the minimum wage, is them raising it now, as if that will do anything.
See, the real problem isn't how much people are making. It's the make-believe that governs how much things cost. Goods, services, and domiciles have grown in price in a way that is completely disconnected from reality. Homes are not _actually_ worth 300% of what they were worth 10 years ago. That ridiculous increase has been artificially created by corporate real estate companies. More importantly, the upper 20 percent of earners have managed to fraudulently increase their earnings in a way that allows them to afford the ludicrously inflated prices, and even drive them higher. The problem is wage theft. It's less about the how little the people at the bottom are making, and more about the completely unearned compensation of those at the top.
As American productivity has increased, the value of that productivity has not been evenly distributed amongst the workforce. For no reason other than naked greed, the people controlling the books have taken all the value for themselves, even though they did nothing to earn such a large percentage of the profits. Congress could have intervened in this practice long ago. In fact, President W. Bush explicitly called this out during one of his State of the Union addresses, calling it outright shameful.
Raising the minimum wage now, will do nothing without addressing the abuses of corporations. They have already manipulated the legislature to pass laws that funnel earning power to them and away from the working class. They will simply do that more. Prices will quickly rise, and people will be just as desperate. Only by repealing the mechanisms of control corporations have over the market, will we see a return to the days when people could reasonably earn a living by working a 40-hour work week.

As a former fast food worker in california. The restaurants I used to work at would raise prices 2 times per year it did not matter if the minimum wage went up or not. I remember when they raised the minimum wage, they raised the prices and cut the hours. That's why I left the industry. I always get upset when I hear companies and people blame food workers, like if prices were not going to go up if we just stayed quiet.
Something struck me the other day when I saw the tip space on my receipt at a non-traditionally-tippable place, and I wrote, “N/A”. I might keep doing it.

About the Jesse Waters story, as someone who worked in fast food as their first job for a year and a half, I could only DREAM of that kind of rate for working that kind of job. There's the sexual harassment from not only customers but even coworkers as well, the constant kissing ass to the manager so you're not scheduled to death but enough to make money. I had an AWFUL experience working at McDonald's fresh out of high school so I am very happy they've decided to do this in California and hope other states on the East Coast take similar measures.
