I think the show Arcane by Riot Games had the perfect release model for a series. The show was 9 episodes long and they released 3 episodes a week and basically every 3 episodes were basically an “Arc” within the season.
This was a great way to let the show digest for a week to talk/think about it rather than just binging it all at once while also giving you more than just a single episode to watch. You can spread the episodes through out the week and be ready for the new stack of episodes to drop.

I succumbed to this and It was probably one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. I had zero money and was absolutely terrified of my friends and family seeing that stuff. Dude even got on a video call with me and showed me my families facebook profiles up on his computer. My heart was racing but I eventually hung up the phone and basically nipped it in the bud before it could get worse. Called my mom my brothers and sister and my closest friends. Had to have the incredibly embarrassing conversation that I fucked up and was being extorted and if you see my face and other things from a random person to not trust them. I wanted to jump off a freaking bridge.

I’m not actually a huge fan, but my favorite retcon is probably how Tolkien retconned the ring after the first edition of The Hobbit. Since The Hobbit is written as a memoir from Bilbo, Tolkien added a note saying that in the initial telling, Bilbo was too ashamed to admit the truth, but that it was now restored. Essentially he safely wrote a retcon without it being a true retcon.

    • @DisorderlyFashion
      @DisorderlyFashion Před 26 dny +10

It was still a retcon in other regards. The chapter Riddles in the Dark was almost completely rewritten. The magic ring Golum gives Bilbo was carefully remade into The One Ring, yes, but the chapter also totally reworked Golum from a quirky, less sinister character into the Golum we know and love today.
It was a hard retcon. And yet, it's completely accepted.
40k lore has always contained numerous inconsistencies, both large and small. To me, at least, most of the people complaining about this change are less concerned with it potentially presenting another retcon. They just resent female characters entering a de facto all male space, much like how they resent women becoming more visible in so-called "nerd" spaces.

19:50 in regards to the Warhammer retcon thing, one of my absolute favorite retcons in any story was in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. They intentionally retconned the entire backstory for the Hive (one of the main antagonist alien races) by saying it was all a massive lie, and used the fact that it was a lie to evolve the narrative into making them unknowing victims to millions of years of manipulation. It not only opened the possibility of an uneasy alliance with Savathun, one of the most persistent threats we fought in the series, but also showed the immense level of power that the real antagonists have compared to them. Characters described as gods who commited universe-wide genocide across countless planets were nothing compared to Rhulk and the Witness.

The *cheapest.* I remember when I used to be able to buy the tickets directly from the venue, and there the most I'd spend was about £40, and that was for VIP tickets. It's becoming more and more expensive to see artists live and I blame Ticketmaster. The band I went to see even gave some loyal fans who really couldn't afford it free tickets because of how bad the pricing was, and they didn't want their fans who had been going to their shows for 20+ years to miss out. Within Warhammer, factions involving women already exist. The Sisters of Battle have been said to have been around since 1997 and the Sisters of Silence were said to have made their debut in 2003.
I’m a newcomer to the franchise so I do not know the full ins and outs of it. However, based on what I’ve seen, the sisters do not get much investments into figurines, novels or lore compared to the Space Marines (Warhammer poster boys).
It’s not a complaint about how “Warhammer’s gone woke”. No. It’s a complaint about how we have these perfectly good female exclusive factions that are just as cool as The Space Marines and the Custodies, but they’re getting sidelined by a retcon that nobody expected or truly wanted.
Also please tell your husband to develop an argument beyond the “Muscle Mommies” bit. I’ve only seen p*rn addicts unironically vouch for this claim and your husband is presumably too good of man to be associated with those type of people 🙏.

We also love the deep dives, fan theories, and the anticipation for the next episode. Instead of consuming it all in one go and then that first time feel is gone, the weekly new episode gives the impression of savoring something and getting those endorphins longer and being excited for longer.
Before kids we DEFINITELY consumed everything we could as fast as we could, now we like to take it a bit more slowly and have discussions on each episode.

Because Live Nation has them by the contractual balls. They own most if not all of the venues they sell tickets to and force those venues to funnel to their systems. • @SiMeGamer
      @SiMeGamer Před 27 dny

@@AcilandreF You are not forced to give them anything. Prices are set and people can choose to either value the ticket at that price or not. It's not different from any product on the market. If an iPhone is too expensive, you buy a cheap Android. If the cake at the bakery is too expensive, you buy a doughnut or you just don't eat dessert. You don't have a right to entertainment. It's a privilege to even have that available. The reason these guys are rich is because the customers don't have enough self discipline or maybe, just maybe, the prices being set are correct and reflect how much people value these experiences.
Stop saying you are forced when talking about entertainment or luxury items. Nobody forces you. When Netflix raises prices, nobody forces you to keep paying the subscription. You can watch CZcams instead or read a book or play the harmonica or meditate. Entertainment is not a right. Stop treating it as such. Actions speak louder than words. Don't pay if it's too expensive and if more people adhere to this and start being rational consumers, then prices will be forced to drop if they don't reflect the cost of production. Last I checked all these events are fully booked, meaning people are indeed willing to pay these prices, and so, if we give the consumers the benefit of the doubt and treat them as rational, then it means they value this entertainment that fking highly and nothing is unfair.
I recommend studying micro economics. It's fairly simple and explains how supply and demand work for specific things. Clearly the demand is so high that people are paying these crazy prices. I see this as a completely fair business. If you can sell something for more and people will still buy it, you'd be really stupid not to do so (unless it hurts you as a brand enough or loses too many long term customers). Prices drop when people stop paying if it makes sense for the product/service being sold. Instead of complaining about them, stop paying. It's much more effective.
Btw, I know the frustration of buying tickets. Last year I bought tickets to an event in London and in 5 minutes everything was sold by bots and people who queued for over 45 minutes prior. Most tickets started reselling on third party websites for the main event days for much higher prices. It was slightly annoying but honestly I didn't mind. I went to the cheaper days that weren't sold, very good prices and had a great time. If everything is sold it means the event is successful and is more likely to keep operating in the future. Win-win for everyone (the more success - the more competition - the lower the prices).
Nobody forces you to do anything except the government. Ticketmaster isn't forcing you to pay 2,000$ for a ticket. They are offering you that deal. You can decline and move on to what you can and are willing to afford.

This has existed as part of canon for a long time, and in fact any Slaanesh follower can receive this gift. But you might not know that, because Warhammer has been actively shoving this faction and chaos god under the carpet in more recent times, even refusing to create models or writing any books for this bit of lore. Something also to consider with the Live Nation story is that scalpers are such a huge problem, and there aren’t enough safeguards in place to deter them. One of my favorite bands, Sleep Token, is coming to Red Rocks Amphitheater in May and right as tickets went on sale, they were all somehow immediately sold out, even with queues and pre-sales in place. Tickets are still around ~$300 per ticket. Not as bad as The Eras Tour by any means, but having to pay literally anything more than a maximum of $20-$30 for a concert ticket is absolutely ridiculous.
I ended up finding a ticket for almost $200 after fees for Sleep Token. Excited to go, but very upset about how much it was.

As an adult with responsibilities, it's nice to wind down with a good show at the end of the day, but the pressure to watch 6-8 feature films worth of content to avoid spoilers and keep up in fandom conversations is rough. My friend said he likes the idea of a huge drop of content being there even if he doesn't have time to get to it all. In recent years my husband and I have gravitated more toward shows with shorter episodes. I think also to remember too Phil, with the weekly episode drops, is that we grew up in a time where an entire season was 20 something episodes and lasted from a September to May schedule. I think the last show that I remember that I watched doing that was "This is Us". Most shows now are about 8-10 episodes, 13 if you're absolutely lucky. So, at that time, you had a one of your favourite shows you could watch each night of the weekday. Now, with the shorter seasons, especially with streaming platforms, it's nice to watch your show that you like after work/evening down time and not have to wait a week, since the build up is also a lot faster, VS a mid season bulid up and a season finale build up.
So, I have to say with the longer 20 some odd episodes seasons, I'm fine with the once a week model. And the shorter seasons, I dont mind all at once. Once a week for Shogun, for example, each episode is such a cliffhanger, that it can feel like a bummer to wait for the next one lol.

As an English teacher, Ai has been dreadful. It’s my first year and I keep saying how I wish I was a teacher 5,10, 20 years ago because it was not as bad back then. I have to talk to six students tomorrow because they used AI on a test essay, an essay they were allow to use notes, slides, and their books on. The saving grace (if it can be called one) is that they don’t know how to use it. They put the prompt in and boom done. Some copy and paste, others take the time to type it out word for word, but some are starting to just use a chrome plug in on google docs. I have coworkers who have been doing this for years shifting to writing papers by hand to avoid ai plagiarism. As a first year teacher it’s gut wrenching because I’m putting in so much work to find, create, and build resources for them to use just for them to not even try. Then when it comes to having this discussion I have to have all this evidence to back up my claims. I’m spending 3x as much work and time proving they are using ai that there are days I debate just giving them the grade they didn’t earn, but then how is that fair to other students? On the bright side AI is still dumb to a degree, quotes and details are not present. It’s a shallow summary of events made to look nice with perfect grammar and fancy words that my students wouldn’t even be able to define unfortunately. At least this time it’s easy to see because a character in Romeo and Juliet has two different spellings. Ai uses one we used the other in notes, quizzes, slides, and our version of the text. But it’s getting better everyday to the point where everything will need to be written by hand again.

Google form lock-down times writing as well for my 8th graders.

Part of what has to happen is homework and take home projects need to be handled differently. They need to count for less of the final grade and more quizzes/tests should be incorporated because it requires actually understanding the material to complete. Beyond that, some work will be easier to complete with the use of AI or google, but that needs to be looked at on a case by case basis. Coding, for example, is made easier w AI and google and your ability to be resourceful is more important. All the same it’s a tricky situation and we haven’t really figured out what to do yet as a society about AI.

I'm a science teacher in a school in Europe and my head of my department has volunteered the department to try to integrate AI and VR tech in our lessons. While I have nothing against the integration of tech into my lessons and I actually welcome it, I am finding that what we currently have actually gives me more work than saves me work as me and my coworker have to program everything ourselves as there's nothing out there for us to use for the level that we teach (11-14 year olds). Whenever I've used AI or VR in the classroom I'm always reminded of the warning "They will remember the experience but not the lesson" and this has proven true in all of my Tech lessons as kids love the novelty but when I quiz them the next lesson they can't remember what they learned and it's driving me mad because its wasting so much of our lesson time and my own planning time.
I'm sure there's a future for AI in education but it dont think it's currently at the right level for it to alleviate teacher work load right now, it only adds to it.

yup, the tech should be integrated to make teachers lives easier and free up more time to work with students. The general population is making the exact mistake about AI that they all make with calculators. They think "why do we need to learn math if we have a calculator" and now its "why do the kids need to write essays when they can just be taught to effectively use AI" but the way to effectively use a calculator or AI or any tool at all is to start with strong foundational knowledge. Which means learning to do math by hand and learning to write with your own ideas and with a strong understanding of grammar.
More people need to be forced to watch elementary and middle schoolers do any single task and they will realize how much prior knowledge you are operating on that you think is unimportant. You might think that hammering a nail into something is pretty self explanatory but watch kids use a nail way to long or way to short or not take time to line something up. The only reason you can do a simple task is because you learned from your own mistakes already, someone taught you, or you were able to use prior knowledge to apply it to a new situation. There is no skipping the basics to jump to using and advanced tool.
edit: I will often tell kids who won't stop complaining that we can for sure have an assessment where I test their ability to use a calculator. I give them a simple problem, they type it in, they all get it correct and say "yay you all passed the calculator assessment! which is wonderful because it frees us up a bunch of time to learn how to do calculations by hand or that a calculator won't help you with!" :p I could imagine myself doing the same with writing essays with chatGPT. Cool you all wrote an essay in 10seconds! Now we have lots of time to learn how chatGPT did that ;p

How exactly are you attempting to include AI tech in your lessons?
AI technology is incredibly complicated, so I imagine it would be very difficult, to abstract it to a level that 11-14 year-olds can understand.
Is the aim for them to create AI, or to use AI? Because I can see the value in teaching them how to use it, and create new things with AI, but teaching that age-group to work **ON** AI, might be a tad ambitious. :)

From multiple shows that I watch or love I can say that model of one episode per week fits much better into a life of being an adult with responsibilities. I have a night I look forward to where I maybe splurge and have a nice meal. I get to watch my show and I don't try to squeeze in other activities for the night. I watch the youtube videos about everyone's predictions for that nights episode and everyone picking out easter eggs after the episode airs and there is discussion about the episode and what will happen in the next episode. These videos are not long and I can spend as much time on forums and watching these extras from the cast, directors, producers, youtubers, etc. as I wish to get into the show more or simply watch it before I go to bed at my leisure as something to look forward to. I also personally remember details of each episode when I watch it this way vs binging it.
With a series dump I do not have feel like the option is there to watch one episode a week as youtubers and discussion forums go over the series the next day. . .I mean they say they stayed up all night and I ask myself if they have a job bc I can't stay up all night and still function the next day. Taking 8 weeks to watch Fallout. . . .everything would have been spoiled and only one youtube channel is going over the series episode by episode and everyone else is simply breaking down the first season. All discussions are about the season. 8 weeks from now no one will want to have a discussion with me about ep 8 and the commentary may include "Wow, you are just seeing that now?" because it was two months ago for them.

I was a victim of sex torsion last year, the person attempting to extort me showed me a picture that they took of their phone with every single one of my contacts in a large group message, they had sent a message to that group chat saying that they had something to show them. I for the life of me couldn't figure out how they managed to add every single one of my followers into a single DM. But whatever they were doing to enable that should be blocked by Instagram because if somebody were to do that, it is incredibly easy to follow through with those threats whereas if they have to do it manually and add everybody one by one, it doesn't block it completely but it definitely makes it a lot harder. Thankfully I was able to get ahead of it and I sent a bunch of messages out to everyone that I knew basically telling them not to interact with that person and that they were trying to scam me which seemed to have address the issue for the most part. And I don't know if they ever actually followed through with sending anything. I have to say though making the choice to block the scammer rather than continuing to talk to them and trying to get them money was a very hard choice to make.

Ok, coming in hot with this take, there WERE female space marines in 40k, back when it was known as "rogue trader" they were retconned out by Games Workshop when the female space marine models were the worst selling models in thier very small range at the time. The market spoke and they streamlined thier production.
A lot of choices are made for production reasons, meaning cold hard cash.
Purity seals, the little wax sealed ribbons on imperial forces were put on models to cover up troublesome areas in the casting mold for more money, easier
Keep your eyes peeled for "Noise marines" or "emperors children"
And rule 34 is going to go crazy with this.

Unless clarified, I dont think anything from Rogue Trader should be considered canon unless specifically stated to be so. Like in Second edition when genestealers were retconed from being just a random animal to being part of the Tyranid fleets. Ya' know?

As a longtime 40K player I find this whole kerfuffle to be absolutely hilarious. A few things to note about 40K & GW:
    1) The lore of 40K is the textbook example of the Unreliable Narrator trope.
    2) The lore of 40K has ALWAYS been in the service of selling more toy soldiers. Everything GW does is in service of that singular goal.
    3) The Sisters of Battle can’t have men in that faction because they exist as a result of a loophole in an edict that says the Imperium’s state religion can’t have “men under arms”.
    4) 40K is satire. A prime example is that one of the main faction leaders is a thinly veiled joke at the expense of Margaret Thatcher.

As an actual educator, this fear of AI is ridiculous. I remember when it was first brought up in a staff meeting (in my very relevant field), I stated: Photography didn't replace paintings. If you are worried about plagiarism on an assessment, write one that it would be hard to plagiarise. I do that. Reflective and process explanation writing is possible in all academic courses. The assessments just need to change. Educators can't be lazy about it. I wish I had an AI assistant for my students to answer the easy questions they could access themselves but get flustered and miss so they ask me. It wasn't that long ago that higher education educators had secretaries...AI could bring part of that back and give us time back to make better student learning experiences. AI is absolutely nothing to be afraid of and anyone who is yelling that is afraid to reskill themselves. There isn't a huge monetary cost barrier to do this (most things are free including a lot of AI tools). Technology changes but people are always needed to harness it and to go beyond it.

I never thought that Phil would talk about Warhammer 40k and get so much of explanation correct, but here I am, and I loved every moment of it
I love that my Golden Boys now also include Golden Girls
One thing to note that the writers of the books and other lore involving the Custodes actually intended to include both men and women among their ranks, but the higher ups in GW at the time were a "boys only" club about a lot of game. So the writers sprinkled in stuff throughout the books and codexes for future reference.
A lot of bigoted fans are pointing at a text describing how the "Lords of Terra would offer their sons" to the Custodes, but seems to ignore the text that comes RIGHT AFTER that says "whole clans would offer ALL of their offspring" and how "only the Custodes themselves truly know the requirements for recruits"
To be fair, it doesn't help that GW also nerfed the crap out of the army, and made almost every unit completely useless to play now..
The whole thing has really highlighted the ugly bigotry in the game that pushed me out in the 90s. Only in the last 10 years have I gotten back in to it because I have amazing friends who just wanted to enjoy the game and have fun. The gaming space has changed a lot in the last 20 years, but there are still a pockets of bigotry that refuse give women and POC folks a hard time just for trying to enjoy the game too.

Phil, I've finished rebirth, damn near at 100% and I'm about half way through hard mode before I crashed.
I finished my 1st playthrough on Dynamic difficulty at around 123 hours. I did every side quest (minus 1) and did every mini games (except for the hard modes on 3 specific series). I explored every nook and cranny, did everything in queen's blood, finished world intel including the proto relic stuff, and of course the story.
As someone who loved OG, enjoyed the movie, played all the spin offs, read the books, and etc REMAKE and much more so REBIRTH does an incredible job of expanding the world, character, lore, and everything. There is a series of main events around chapter 7 that I think most will call "filler" but for someone who genuinely loves these characters and I was so happy for the side track and getting to just spend more time with them and their personalities.
REBIRTH is done beautifully in this regard.
I will say though immediately diving into Hard Mode after my 123 hour time sink in "normal/dynamic" I definitely burned out. Especially since HM battles are a lot more difficult. BUT there are a lot of really great features /settings that become available after beating the game the first time will make redoing a couple chapters to see certain scenes much more manageable.

My favorite "retcon" was the change in the D&D racial Yuan-Ti Lore that they made to make them more diverse. Basically prior to the Ret-con, Yuan-ti were 100% evil, no ifs ands or buts. But with the introduction of yuan-ti player characters this was harder because some people loved Yuan-ti but not the evil part. So wizards basically said "hey Yuan-ti have cults, rituals, but you know what they also have, other factions that don't do those crazy messed up things and can have civil and respectable culture as well. You would have thought the world ended with some "purists" but the reality is D&D has ALWAYS been play how you want to play and the change really only said "yeah you want 'good' Yuan-ti, go for it!" Still the backlash was wild, overblown, and stupid. Same as this custodies "drama."
