I get what Phil is trying to say and it's great to give any motivation\person the benefit of the doubt. But if you enter a stable, you expect to see a horse, not a Zebra. But I have to sincerely thank you for how you covered the story. We Iranians hate the regime that’s hijacked our beautiful country and culture. We hate everything they do inside the country and outside.

This is a bit besides the topic but not too long ago I stumbled on this video of Iran. czcams.com/video/xerddv6bouQ/video.html
In that video I see many women walking around without a anything covering their head and the vibe in the video is so peaceful. How is that, is this video fake? Is it maybe that this particular city is en exemption from the suppression going on? Care to give me your two cent on the matter? I stand for freedom, so I don't mean any harm with this question.

    • @MithraAnahita
      @MithraAnahita Před 19 dny +8

@@thesid92 Iranian women are fearless. We don’t back down. Despite the risks many still choose to go out without Hijab. In big cities especially where there are lots of young people, many just defy the laws openly. So the video wasn’t fake, it’s reality. The fact is that the morality police have specific areas they like to patrol, and women have figured out where to avoid (for the most part). But if you’re visiting the big city, like Mahsa Amini was visiting Tehran, you don’t have the knowledge of the locals so you’re more at risk.

They're not going to approve anything that would actually force them to do something they don't want to do, so it's all just a big waste of time.

TL;DR - I agree with you completely, and also take exception to the idea that "confrontational art" is something distinct from all other art, or to be honest that it even exists as its own thing, since all art is inherently confrontational on some level (but usually many).
The revenge p@rn implications alone are enough to make you shudder, and that's before you take into account all the other horrific crimes that could be permitted under the guise of "confrontational art".
And as for the phrase "confrontational art", there's already a name for that.....art. Art is designed to confront and challenge, and excite and engage and inspire and mystify. The very principle of art is rooted in confrontation - art is literally humans confronting empty spaces by filling them with paintings and pictures and films and songs and stage plays and sculptures, etc.
And in the performance art world, that's definitely true. Some of the all-time great pieces of performance art have been 100% about confronting the worst elements of our society.
      - Performances of the piece "El violador eres tú", first developed by a feminist group in Valparaiso, Chile in response to a march against women's rights taking place in that city, have directly combated the steady increase of misogynistic behaviours and attitudes in the modern world.
      - Yoko Ono openly challenged the callous 'empathy' of John Lennon's fanbase and the mainstream press following his murder by writing and recording the Season of Glass album, which also featured John's bloodied glasses from the night he was killed on the album cover.
      - Teresa Margolles has an installation called "En el Aire" (In the Air), where visitors stand in an empty room whilst bubbles are blown into the room that will eventually burst on the visitors' skin. It's only after each 'performance' that the visitors are told that the water in the bubbles was collected from Mexico City morgues (and disinfected) after being used to wash the bodies of John and Jane Does before their unmarked burials, an incredibly visceral comment on the way we shield ourselves from talking about both death and the people who we as a society and a species constantly leave behind.
Notice how none of those involved harassment, abuse, (completely) unwilling participation, or aggression...well, scratch that last part, Yoko's pretty angry (and rightfully so) on that album.
But the point still stands: If you can't find a way to confront your 'target' without going beyond art and just being openly disrespectful and harassing to people, you probably don't wanna confront that thing for the right reasons anyway.

Huge fan, Phil! I just wanted to clarify something as a third generation vet who has been around DoD and government people my whole life about a language choice in the last story:
In the Havana Syndrome story, the word the skeptics used was implausible. I only point this out because the meaning is actually different ("hard to believe" as opposed to "not possible"), and it's a curious word choice. Normally, a real skeptic will jump to the big hard-line words like "impossible", or use layman's terms like "highly unlikely". The fact they chose a less often used word that sounds like impossible might be coincidental, but is certainly interesting because it at the bare minimum shows they don't think it's outside the realm of possibility, just that they don't want to believe it. And when dealing with military intelligence, that kind of difference is usually not coincidental and very pointedly chosen.

"When someone says 'I hate Iran', that what they're saying is I hate the Iranian government. I hate the ruling class there." I really wish the media would do better about making this more clear to everyone. If the media as a whole could take the extra second when stating a headline to add the word "government" behind a country's name, maybe there wouldn't be so many people out there with blind hatred for an entire country of people who may or may not even believe in what their government is doing. So many stories about Russia this, Russia that. No, Russians are just people, the Russian government is the problem. The everyday people aren't inherently on the government's side. Same with Israel, South Sudan, Belarus, Palestine, the United States, and every other country out there... It's not a choice of Israel or Palestine, it's regular everyday human beings on both sides being taken advantage of by those who abuse any drop of power they get and use that power to commit acts of hatred and violence. Probably because its easier for humans to bond over a mutual hatred than actually take the time to find something in common that's productive to society.

That first story is infuriating. Not even addressing the blatent doushe-baggary that has incited so many others, performance art is specifically about creating art that cannot be replicated... SHE RECORDED IT!?
I'm all for free speach and despite the wild, progressive and powerful nature of performance art (look up Mao Sugiyama for the extremes and "Marina Abramovic and Ulay - A Minute of Silence" for a moving example) the core phylosophy of performance art is that is is non-replicable, non-commercial and puts no one in danger outside of those willing to "opt in" to the performance.
Certainly there is power in "ambusing" influential people but tell me, what added meaning did attacking Alec's personal trauma/issue with the death of his co-worker give? what was the planning? how much effort did she put into this "piece"? why was there no-one else recording nor any "performance suport" in the form of others helpping her pull off her piece? what message does this give?
She saw alec, and decided to chase clout citing a often misunderstood and nieche form of art to hide behind when it became clear that she was nothing more then a clout chasing sosiopath more interested in getting a reaction then making a statement.
The idiots who threw soup on art works and glued themselves to art gallaries made more effort then her. Pathetic.
