90 seconds. People had 90 seconds from when the mayday call went out to when the Key Bridge fell. The fact that six people died, two of which were ON THE BRIDGE during its collapse, is a goddamn miracle.
The officers, divers, dispatch operators, and ambulance drivers moved so quickly and calmly. They kept dozens of people from the same fate. I’ve never been more proud of my city.
Came looking for this- This is some of the most exemplary emergency service work I've ever seen or heard of; they saved a lot of lives.
Very much this. The best outcome would be if this never happened in the first place, or if the work crews were on break off the bridge at the time. And the second best outcome was what we got. Bravo to those emergency workers.

@@wasthatyourfeet I kinda wonder why it's not a required part of bridge-design [for large bridges] to have an automated system for closing the bridge from traffic, in response to any kind of mayday from a boat (or simply remotely by state institutions such as fire fighters or police - for when they are alarmed by phonecall).
The fact that someone could build a house on your land and just be like “oops, well I guess you have to pay us for the house too” is just insane. It’s even more ridiculous that anyone could possibly think they have the grounds to sue her over their own very expensive mistakes

That's not how it should work, you build a house on her property without permission well I guess it's her house now.
That's why people in rural areas have signs that say trespassers will be shot and usually the state will side with the property owner.
Can't the same logic be applied here? Hawaii is part of America last time I checked, so they have that 2nd Amendment right to defend their property.
@@mike45blue I’m pretty sure one woman in a place that looked fairly remote probably would not feel safe attempting to defend a plot of land from the numerous people that the developer could send and squatters that could have their own weapons. She may not even know how to use a gun. I’m also not sure about the gun laws in Hawaii, but they are different from state to state. Just because you might have the right to own a gun, doesn’t mean you have the right to shoot someone with it, not to mention, I’d argue most people would not be willing to shoot another person. And also, the house is already there. The ecosystem she wanted in the plot is gone and there is now a house. What would defending a house, that she didn’t want in the plot in the first place, even resolve? Even if she would be okay with taking the house, the land taxes are much higher because of it, and she also didn’t want that. I’m not arguing anyone’s right to own a gun, but I am pointing out that just having one doesn’t solve all of life’s problems.
Phil, i’ve read two other articles this week about people who’ve owned small plots of land finding out that land has been illegally sold to big companies behind their back and NEITHER of them were the story you just told.
This issue has been on the rise lately and just absolutely highlights how easy it is for companies to exploit individuals.
The time, effort and money it takes for a single person just to convince the government that they own their own land is something some people just can’t manage and that’s exactly what these companies are banking on, the cost of stopping them is a price beyond the means of a single person and all they have to do is outlast the victim financially.

Sadly, this sort of thing is not remotely new. "Deed fraud" has been a thing for some time now. It's surprisingly easy to sell property that isn't actually yours. (apparently)
The idea that someone could accidentally build a house on another person's property. Then try to find a way to make a "even trade" deal is wild. Like "so we messed up and for months we've been building onto your property. The jobs done so how about a property of similar value 130 miles away sound?". I don't know if the property was super far away but it's the first thing I thought of. Just incredibly stupid.

I was just looking at a house that had that problem. Someone built a pole house on part of the property and won so the acre had to be sold to the person who built it on someone else's property.

It does require a negligent owner, but if someone builds on a property they don't own and gets away with it for a period of time ( it varies depending on where you are), and they can prove they have maintained it, they now own it. And will probably get nailed with a tax assessment/fine for not paying said taxes because tax man gonna get his dues. Not legal advice, check your local laws.
The "unreasonable" part more comes in where she denied two decent options at making right because of alt health pseudo-science mumbo-jumbo.

The Hawaii house: The developer should pay to tear down the house, and restore the vegetation to it’s previous condition. The woman obviously owns the land, and not responsible for what amounts to vandalism. Just because you make something you like doesn’t mean it’s not vandalism.
I wouldn't tear down the house, but the developer should pay to move it and then pay to replace what he tore down.

As for the taxes, my home country is at the ass end of a messed up property tax reform and lots of people are getting unreasonable tax bills with no meaningful ability to appeal clear factual errors, such as new residents getting taxed for the value of their neighborhood because their tiny house having the same records number as the empty field that was subdivided way before they bought that tiny piece that was no different than the other pieces .

Holy crap...that situation with the woman who had a house built on her lot is insane. I don't care who is at fault, the only thing I know is that the woman is not. Full stop. She purchased that property and had her own plans for it. Even if she didn't have any plans and just wanted to leave it as it was, at the end of the day, that land was legally hers. She owned the property, she has absolutely every right to be "unreasonable." I.e., her obstinance is completely "reasonable" in this case. It sounds like there were multiple failures downstream from her and the blame is fully on them. Everyone involved in that happening should be communicating to her when this situation will be resolved.
And if for some reason she was willing to take another lot, to me that would have to come with quite a bit of extra cash as well. And if the taxes were that more, then they would have to cover the difference for the taxes on that lot for, I don't know, maybe 40 years and give her the cash value of that as well.

The story about that woman’s property just shows the incredible issues of overdevelopment in Hawai’i. Developers and contractors run roughshod over locals (this woman isn’t a local, but the issue is even worse for locals), real estate prices are out of control because of tourists, resorts, and corporations and rich non-locals who buy up all the land, and locals struggle to keep living in their own homes, and the state just lets it all happen because rapacious development makes more profit for the state than responsible management of the land for the best interests of the people who actually live there.

Here’s the thing: white collar crime is shown consistently to have more widespread and more damaging impacts on average than other forms of crime, yet it is consistently one of the forms of crime with the lowest average sentence periods. The guy caught on the corner dealing drugs is usually going to get a heavier sentence than the guy who embezzles millions of dollars, or defrauds thousands of investors.

The thing that keeps coming to mind about Baltimore, is the feelings of those in the ship, imagine the feeling of guilt and suffering internally about the fact people are gone from an uncontrollable mistake, this situation and the world in general is so rough lately, thank you Phil and team for taking the time to break down these stories, as someone who couldn’t face these stories online, your breakdowns help IMMENSELY
The worst of the mistakes wasn't even their fault, the company knew the boat was faulty and not functioning properly after it had a few mishaps years past. But still put profit over people just sad that this had to happen before they finally put it out of commission and even then they'll still somehow find a way to keep the ship going.
How prisons are for profit and not under the direct and complete control of the government is absolutely insane. We should not accept this as normal.

As a bare minimum, incarceration rate should NOT be tied to profit in anyway or other benefits, period. The incentive structure is completely misaligned.

My sister lives in NY and was commuting home on the subway when a man randomly kicked her in the head (she was sitting, he was standing). The man timed it so he could exit the subway right after. She was chatting with her coworker and this attack came out of nowhere, no warning.
Luckily my sister works for a hospital and her coworker was right there to help her while they got her to the closest emergency medical professional.
This was over a year ago. Not sure if it's related to the punching, but the thought that other women are also getting randomly attacked is devastating and terrifying.
There is one story that always ALWAYS comes to mind when I used to walk to the train station. In fact, Phil covered it a few years ago.
The woman who was jogging minding her own business when a man suddenly shoved her into the pathway of a bus! No rhyme or reason for it. Thankfully, the bus driver reacted quickly and jerked the bus out of the way. They never caught him. After seeing that, I’ve become very vigilant about my surroundings. What’s worse is I would have something of a panic attack as I walked over a bridge. I would speed walk over it. Walking at night was terrifying!

I remember a string of incidents with people randomly being punched in the back of the head before. Also in New York.

Discovery of ownership is a HUGE part of planning out where and how to build any property, commercial or residential. Imagine someone coming into your own home and spray painting every single wall black, tearing up your furniture, and removing the appliances you bought. You'd call the cops immediately and they'd be held accountable for destruction of property. This land was stolen and vandalized right under her nose and she can never get it back.

I have a tattoo of "This, too, shall pass". I got it after my husband died in 2019. It's something my mother used to say to me as a youngling, and I hated it. Explaining philosophy to a teenager has got to be harder than pulling hen's teeth lol. As I got older, I learned about a story that went with it. It goes; one day, a king wanted the impossible, something that made him happy AND sad. Many tried, many failed. Then a wise man went to visit the king and gave him a short, succinct phrase "this, too, shall pass". The significance being that whether you are happy or sad, just keep in mind that these things are fleeting. Enjoy and/or endure as necessary.
I didn't understand this until I was much older, married, and in mourning. The time I had with my husband (12 years) was precious, and the pain of mourning I was experiencing was temporary. Both things were true at once, and that sentence encompassed both things. The tattoo is on my left hand, and I see it all day every day, which gives me the strength to keep going. This, too, shall pass.

Prisons shouldn't simply exist to hold people indefinitely. We need to remember that those people will be released, and the way we treat them in prison will have an impact on them when they're released back into society. Denying them friends and family and socialization, with a pricetag to get those back, is peak evil and paints the world as cruel and profit driven, which is likely what drove some to crime in the first place.
@@Titanhex not just in, but after too. I've seen a lot of people look at others countries prison systems and say they have less return prisoners, we should be like that. Noone looks to after they get out. Many places won't hire them for years. No job means they either mooch off family and friends, burdening them, or turn to illegal methods and possibly returning when caught.

I worked for my counties detention center in New Mexico, this was back in 2019 before the pandemic and they had already banned in-person visitation in favor of video/audio calls. I worked for several months in the "Visitation Center" where I monitored calls and videos, while I wasn't privy to any revenue, I did hear frequently that it cost $20-$30 for half an hour of video chatting. I would see nearly a hundred calls per day. I left that job after my experience as a guard (the things I witnessed there are horrible) and have gone back to school for criminal justice, I hope to reform this horrendous system of corrections in my state.
The statement of "the developer offered to sell her house to her" literally says who's responsible for the fuck up here. No reasonable person can look at that sentence and say "hm, that seems like a reasonable demand."
That developer is OUT OF HIS DAMN MIND if he thinks he's entitled to shit. He built something on another person's property because he didn't (want to) do things the right way. He built without THE LAND OWNER'S permission and can't even restore the damage to what it was. And I doubt the city truly said "go ahead and build on your _neighbor's_ lot" ; more likely he requested the correct land area and then went OVER the appropriate space because he didn't use a surveyor. He can and should eat the cost of the house's construction AND demolition (if she should want that), the difference in her raised property taxes, AND the damages he caused to HER property because HE'S THE ONE WHO FUCKED UP.
This is not difficult math here.
Nah fam i side with the developer on this one, their offeers were fairly reasonable, and adjacent plot or pay for the house and big discount. Like lets say you got in an car accident, and you are responsible for the other persons new totaled car, what would be the reasonable solution? You pay her for the value of he car right. But now she says no i dont want any other car , i want that specific car that has value to me, but repairing the totaled car would more than to buy a new one. So should you pay more than replacing her car cuz she wanted that specific car? After all the accident was your fault not hers.
@@omarcarrero3623 He didn't own the land to develop in the first place. No offer is reasonable outside of paying for the damages caused and restoring to previous condition (as close as possible). He decided on his own "yeah I like this land, MINE NOW!" That's not how the real world works. He didn't have the rights to develop it in the first place, so she has ZERO obligation to accept ANY offer other than to compensate for the damages HE caused.
Your example is not apples to apples, if you want to deal with the car accident example this would be more accurate: you STOLE someone else's car, got that STOLEN CAR wrapped with a custom image YOU liked, and then when the cops FOUND THE STOLEN CAR you demand to be paid back for the wrap.
Your example is more like if he had built NEXT to her land and then something happened on HIS property that caused damage to hers. Let's say a sewage leaks that killed her plants. EVEN THEN it is his responsibility to pay the damages HE CAUSED!!!
It's fucking insanity that you think this is the right way to go about vandalized property because that is what this is. She did not WANT IT DEVELOPED, he was not authorized to develop it. PERIOD. End of discussion. You don't get to say, "WELL *_I_* LIKED IT" to damages you caused to someone else's stuff.
He didn't even offer to pay the damages he caused; he wanted to give her a DISCOUNT on buying HIS UNAUTHORIZED BUILDING! He's demanding money for doing work that was not requested. There is already a mechanism in the law that deals with this sort of thing with contractors and it is ALWAYS on the contractors to take on the financial responsibility for _restoring_ the work to what is was before the unauthorized work was done. The bill is not sent to the _victim_ for the contractor's fuck up.

Your car example is flawed. If we were to transfer it to real estate again it would be he built on HIS OWNv property (your car) and caused damage (got in an accident) to HER property (with her car). HE WOULD STILL BE RESPONSIBILE for the damages he caused! And it would be his responsibility not to fix it as cheaply as possible but to restore it to how it was BEFORE HE CAUSED THE DAMAGES if she chose not to get the new car he was offering (there is such a thing as sentimental value in cases like this). Not any better, nor any worse.
Your example turned to real estate would be more like this:
" He had a sewage leak on his property and it killed her plants. " In that situation, he's responsible for paying for her to replace the plants with like (not get some massive redwood imported from Cali, nor paying for rye seed for grass to eventually grow in).
If you still want to go with a car example, what he did was the equivalent of stealing her car (demoing her property without her permission), getting it wrapped nicely so he could sell it (building a house), attempting to sell said stolen car (listing the house on the market), she shows up and demand her original car be returned (she wants her land restored to what it was), *and then he "offers" for her to partially pay for the wrap (he'll give a discount on the house) or buy her a new car of a different type (offers her another lot).*
She is under no obligation to accept PAYING HIM FOR DAMAGES HE CAUSED (because that is fucking insane) nor is she obligated to accept property she didn't want as recompense (because if she bought the land first, which she did or this wouldn't have happened at all, then she certainly had the option to buy other lots in the same area and ALREADY chose not to the first time around).
So just because you feel it's a good deal doesn't make it legally right. He's essentially stolen her property, vandalized it so it cannot be restored, and now HE'S demanding recompensation for HIS OWN fuck up. It's absolute nonsense.

Unfortunately, my brother has been in and out of jail his whole life. Started in the 90s. Back then, we could come visit in person. Talk and hang out. Then the last 20 years it has been insane. First, have to go to a video kiosk to visit. Now, mostly video visits and phone calls. It is insanely expensive. I have gone periods without being able to talk because I couldn’t afford it. Because you don’t just pay for visits. There’s commissary, and gifts you can buy. All with fees. Just depositing money has a fee now. The for profit prison system is disgusting. These people are treated like animals. Not all inmates are murderers and some are innocent. Our justice system is more about making money than rehabilitation or safety. And the people are demonized. And most people are poor. How many rich people get locked up? Preying on the destitute just shows how disgusting this system is.
The "problem" (not for the prisons, but for the people) is that connections to the outside, ones that are maintained throughout a sentence, have a big impact on not only their behaviour in prison, but their recidivism rate, as well. Great incentive for the prisons, but really, absolutely awful human impact.
It is absolutely sickening to offer profit incentives for human suffering, but we tend to do that a lot. And, people don't tend to have a lot of empathy for prisoners, unfortunately. Regardless of why they're there.

Im still trying to wrap my head around this.. In my country (FIN) prison should only take away your freedom, its written in our constitution, so maybe Ive grown up sheltered. Cutting off or making bank with the only connection you have outside, maybe the only friendly voice is just sick. Depositing fees? On top of the inhumane treatment.. Unreal. I cant. Too much. Cruel & unusual comes to mind, prisons shouldn’t be industries. Ev-ver.

The conspiracies were immediate. I told my mother about the bridge and in less than 10 minutes she had acquired 3 conspiracies to start freaking out about.

I am glad he updated too. I was seeing all those things plus calls for what basically amounted to vengeance, there may still be a reason for charges to be brought, but it really does sound like the crew 'did everything right'. Malfunctions do happen, the only sus thing is the information that it was involved in another collision once before which makes one wonder if there is a serious ongoing issue and maintenance and such is being dangerously skirted. But that other collision was what, 8 years ago? Possibly completely unrelated and this particular ship has just been really unlocking with where and how failures have occurred.
Or basically what I am saying is that an investigation is warranted as it always is when such failures occur, but we don't need the pitchforks and tar and feathers yet. Let the investigation do its thing, there is enough already out that giving the benefit of the doubt in favor of the crew isn't an extreme reaction.

Not in New York but as a teen some random guy once punched me in the top back of my head while I was walking, and just walked away. No attempt of robbery or any other crime... Fortunately, I saw movement from my peripheral when he swung and instinctively ducked which is why he only got a bit of the top. Called 911 and they sent cops to talk to me. After I told them everything, including description of how he looked and the fact that he seemed to be on foot and still nearby, the older, grey haired one literally said "what do you want me to do about it?" His younger partner was nicer, helped me file a report, and said he would make a call to other nearby cars. Never heard any updates.

Yeah. My friend and her now husband were back in their home town in Ontario (Canada) getting engagement photos done/their wedding, he went out to a bar with some friends and some drunks got kicked out, they some how got it in their mind that my friend’s fiancé was to blame and not their own actions and jumped him as he was leaving the bar. He was in a coma for three days, and has since been quick to anger, so much so that it strains their relationship and his relationship with their kids. Their oldest was a toddler and she was pregnant with the second at the time, they’ll never know their father as anyone other than someone who’ll fly into a rage at a drop of hat because of a brain injury.
They guys were arrested and my friend and her husband even sued them for it. Their lawyer kept badgering her like, why did you marry him if he has such anger issues, cause he didn’t develop them until after the injury which was close to the wedding. You could still see the black eye he had in some of the wedding photos

My brother went to prison and during covid he got royally effed. They basically made every cell pod locked down permanently, and they raised the costs for jpay and phone calls.
It got to the point i couldnt afford to keep in touch with him. It was so frustrating, and the entire jail system needs to be overhauled.

Regarding the Hawaii dispute: my husband and I are in the final stages of buying a home in Germany and we have been absolutely floored by the INSANE processes and regulations here just to buy a normal property. It’s been very frustrating and I’ll spare the boring details, but I guess now I have some perspective as to why German bureaucracy is what it is and should be thankful for it.
The fact that the legal battle over the property in Hawaii has even had the room to breathe; is insanity. There is no complicated situation here. No complexity whatsoever. Who bulldozed it? Now you have to bulldoze the home and replant vegetation. Who allowed for this to happen? Cool, now you have to pay for what the hell just happened. And the person who had the bullocks to call and tell her that her property was sold? Revoke his real estate license. And there must be an exorbitant amount of money for the time, the emotional damages, and the legal fees for even addressing this issue to begin with. That's just now how things work. She should just sit back and have all this done for her; because she did nothing for it to all be taken away from her.

My brother got arrested, and my mom and I used the online text and calling service to keep in contact with him. It costs money going both ways. For him to call us and for us to call and text him.
He was in jail, so he couldn't really get a job or anything, so if he wanted to be able to accept calls, we also had to pay for his end of the calls and text. It felt like the jail was abusing the fact that we had a family member who we loved and wanted to remain in contract with, and just said, well now it's gonna cost an arm and a leg. It felt scummy and underhanded, but there wasn't anything to be done. It was either to pay the money, or just have no contact with my brother.
I hope other states make the change to not charging for calls, texting, and other forms of communication.
No, they can't. Because the STATE isn't doing any of this. Your brother is in a PRIVATE prison. So they can do whatever they want. This is where you end up when your country is based solely on MONEY. Humans cease to matter.
I was about a mile away from the bridge when it fell and the sound it made is extremely haunting. We didn't even know what it was until an hour later when we saw from the roof that it was gone. The fact that I drove past those 6 workers just 4 hours before they died is also haunting me daily.

In my county jail, which I was in, in 2015, ALREADY had visitations banned, at least when not mediated by Securus. ANY AND ALL VISITS, even and especially ones where people WENT TO THE JAIL, required using a video system. There was nothing in person, nobody could hug anybody, we had to fight for chairs in the actual dayroom where the visitation consoles were, there was/is ZERO privacy, and it was common practice to have to block blinding lights with paper so we can see the screen, and be seen by the cameras.
I have heard rumors this has gotten worse since, on top of which the canteen (way to buy food. Like ramen or kool-aid mix.) system has been computerized and drastically dialed back. So... I hope the folks in there don't still like mixing Arnold Palmers.

To me, it seems like the same thing is starting to happen with Cargo ships that we've now seen happen several times with trains: Money hungry companies neglect proper maintenance, run the smallest crews they can get away with, and as a result, everyone else suffers. I bet if you put companies on the hook when something that could have been prevented with proper upkeep happens, maintenance would suddenly become a priority. If that Dutch company was on the hook for the money needed to replace the bridge, I bet they'd be scheduling all their other ships for checkups. Same with the train companies, if the clean-up costs, medial bills, and property damage costs came out of their pockets.

Unfortunately, as someone who has alot of interaction with Genesee county its unlikely to change, cops are fine but mostly stay out of the actual problem areas, nearly got robbed 6 times right near a police station. Alot of the prison is mad up of the poor from the poverty of flint, these people never had a chance, I've heard so many stories of crimes in the poorer schools it's ridiculous, these people have little choice alot of the time because of the situation they grow up in. And then spend the actual money on vanity projects, if you want to know any details let me know. But overall it's just kinda a depressing situation

I was in jail for the first and only time in my life in 2018. I was 37 years old.
I was lucky enough to be able to afford calls and video.
I watched as others cried because they simply couldn't afford to speak to their family.
The video calls freeze often and there is literally no way to get refunded. If you use a minute and one second then hang up, that's 2 minutes it charged you for.
Ironic that the people holding criminals are being more shady than the people they are serving.

I can’t imagine the cajones on that developer telling that woman she can buy the house at a discounted price. That whole story would bring on a massive migraine that would last years. And now squatters have moved in, this poor woman needs a cocktail… or all those idiots to apologize and ask how they can make it right.
The only way to truly make it right is if the developer was forced to sell off all their properties at cost or below and move out of the state or shut down (and give the lady her property back for free of course). A developer like that will be a long term problem for may people to come. Not just this one story. There are many developers screwing over individuals in the state.

The line about the people possibly killing their cats right at the end of the yesterday today section reminds me of the post going around a few years ago where someone went to a shelter to adopt a cat for the like third or fourth time and it turned out they were letting their cats outside and they kept being eaten by coyotes, and the person behind the counter said “it sounds like you’re just feeding cats to coyotes at this point”
Mildly related, but I've seen posts by a lot of people who give away "free kittens". Aside from failing to get their free-roaming cats neutered, I understand not wanting to have to deal with kittens that come after. But the issue is that a good number of those kittens get taken by people who then either feed them to their other animals, use them to train their dogs (hunting and/or fighting) and many other problems. Adoption fees are there for a reason, not to just mess with people. So I find it important that we not only stop the idea that giving away OR TAKING kittens for free is a good idea (aside from temporary fostering ofc, I'm talking about adopting). Getting a cat (or any pet, for that matter) is not comparable to fast fashion. You get a kitten, you'll have a companion for the next 15 or so years with a mind of their own, wants and needs. It really is a matter of respect.
@@Windmelodie counterpoint, if you’re chosen by the cat distribution system and approached by a lost and afraid stray kitten on the street, taking it home and looking after it and getting it desexed and adopting it is a net good if you have the ability to do so, compared to it growing up as a stray or having kittens on the street, assuming it can survive on its own

I am specifically talking about Facebook posts along the lines of "looking for a free kitten" or "offering free kittens" or stuff like that. Hence "taking kittens for free" is in context to "Hey, I'm offering kittens for free" - "Sure, I'll take one. Never had cats before, but that kitten looks really cute and it's my gf's birthday tomorrow anyway". Being chosen by, adopting or fostering kittens is something else entirely :)

This is like the third story this month I've heard of where someone's land was sold to developers without their consent or knowledge. There was one where a guy bought land in 1991, and when he visited it recently he found a house built on it. There was another one near me in Scotland where someone was left land in a family member's will and when they went to look at the land, they found a construction site building either a house or a supermarket (I can't remember exactly what). It's crazy.
I loved the Boob and Butt comment because I remember being a dumb teenager when I started watching your channel and it was defiantly one of the things that kept me around. As an adult that cares to stay informed and checks different locations, I am glad we have both matured over the years! Also not someone that gets motion sickness but that camera following you was not the easiest thing to watch, I will be happy to see you in your normal set up next week!

Re: prison/jail story. My nephew is in prison. I use Securus to message him pretty frequently. 4 of the family members including myself put in visitors applications not long after he was put in prison. It took months and months to approve and even then they haven’t approved 2 of the family members yet. A week after we got approval, they moved him to a different location over 2 hours away… not saying that’s related but it was very frustrating. We haven’t got to visit him at all since he went in
Not the point of the story, but THANK YOU for showing the ASL interpreter in the footage of the MD press conferences! So often, when press conferences are aired or edited for news coverage, the interpreter is cut out of the frame. Keeping them in is equal access for all.

the story about women being punched in the face is exactly the same story from back in 2013-2014 in Philadelphia. random people were getting punched in the face on the street, at train stations, just walking to work or wherever, by complete strangers. supposedly it's sometimes referred to as "The Knockout Game" and dates back to at least the 90s. i think it starts small with a few friends, and then word spreads, and more and more people want to 'get in on it' like it's some big prank, and it just grows and grows until they're either stopped or people lose interest. i wouldn't doubt that the same thing is happening now in NYC. it's truly disheartening, as someone who knew people who were genuinely attacked in Philly back then, to see people brushing it off now as fake. humans are capable of doing horrible things when 'encouraged' by other cruel individuals, even under the guise of a joke or prank.
