I remember the first time I watched Star Wars as a child and being blown away. I thought everything in it was real. Now, 20 years later and I'm still blown away by what the talent at ILM can do.

After learning a bit of VFX, I can actually start appreciating the amount of hard-work that goes into a single shot. Even if it's 3 seconds long. Good work! :D

@Mohit97171 The animation for the Transformers themselves are all keyframe animated by hand. We used motion caption for some of the background human characters and from time to time to movements like milling round or standing still - to give some life to the basic pose.

Really amazed by how every single detail taken in count.. like the debris in every explosion.. and cracks on roads and buildings... not only Transformer 3 but in previous movies as well... but in Transformer 3, the fight scene in road where Labeouf will be thrown away and will be got back by bumblebee.. in that particular scene Labeouf wont blend in well with the background.. i watched in both 3D and 2D but he seem to be totally in different layer of scene... anyways you guys damn awesome!!! ^_^

@yokamoney We don't put out specific recommendations but it's fair to say you should look into getting the best machine you can comfortably afford with enough drive space to store the types of material you'll be creating (footage, photos, textures, HD renders, etc.) and in visual effects more RAM is always better. Best of luck!

Thank you ILM for giving us all so much. You guys could upload an hour long video of just turn arounds, render passes (I love AO passes), and animation tests. Beautiful work as always. Quick question. What character had the highest poly count in the Transformers trilogy? Which character had the most bones, or the most in depth rig? I hope someday I could meet one of your modelers, or animators. Can we make that possible?

So here is some light shed onto the animating part of the film:
As a 15 year old Animator who uses Maya, this intrigues me.
How long did this take to render, and how long did it take to make the rigs for the robots.

@ILMVisualFX That sounds kind of funny. I'll explain myself.
Like saying: "Well, I'll use Zeno, because they made Transformers with it. Maya is just not good enough"
It's Zeno and an army of hard-working people + the supervisor's constant eyes and mind pushing that as far as he can for months, or even years.
Zeno system doesn't include amazingly designed robots, directing criteria, research or experience. That comes with people.

The sequence with the building falling down, how long does it take? I've heard that certain things you do take a bout 8-9 hours per frame. Hell, according to do, Devastator in the second transformers movie took 72 hours per frame to render! How do you handle these extremely long render times? From the sounds of it, it seems almost like it would take years for the rendering alone.

Speaking of dreams, I'm hoping to go to the Art Institute of Atlanta to study filmmaking and animation, and I'm planning to open an animation company named Creatoonity Studios. But maybe I should also consider working as an animator for two of my idol companies, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Tippett Studio and a camera operator for live-action. Should I open my animation studio after graduation or wait until I get enough experience from working a large career?
