    No doubt that this series was one of the most impressive as far as the visual effects, amazing work.

    @ILMVFX  Před 11 lety +144

    Some we relatively quick ranging from 2 - five hours, others like the most complex building crushing shots took much longer ray tracing for upwards of 190-hours per frame.

    My brain can't even fathom the amount of work that went into such an incredible movie ! As a kid who has always been passionate about visual effects, I'm almost moved to tears when I see how far we've come in such a short amount of time. And I'm also blown away by the fact that actual people from ILM are reading and actually responding to comments on youtube ! You are my heroes !

  • @gc3k

    the cg in all 3 transformers were lit and colored perfectly. everything looked seamless and photo-real. amazing job guys

  • @ILMVFX
    @ILMVFX  Před 11 lety +58

    It's fairly common to use a stand-in object to interact with other physical objects in a given shot. Obviously that object, in this case a semi-cab has to be painstakingly painted out of the plate to create a clean version of the background which we then use to composite our CG elements into.
    Thanks!

  • @ILMVFX
    @ILMVFX  Před 12 lety +24

    After Effects, Nuke, and Flame were among the compositing packages used and for 3D modeling and animation we primarily used ILM's Zeno and Autodesk Maya.

    It would probably take a year for my computer to render one frame of that film. I'm including all render passes and post processing.

    As you can imagine, each film we take on has it's own set of unique challenges. It would be very difficult to choose just one and say that it, above all others, was the most challenging.

  • @ILMVFX
    @ILMVFX  Před 12 lety +7

    It depends on how many films we are working on at a given time. Typically, it ranges from 5 on the low end to 8 to 10 on the higher end. The artists roll from one show to the next as their disciplines are needed.

  • @ILMVFX

    Can you please show us a lone Transformer, well, transforming in a non-combat situation from multiple angles in slow motion? (For example, the first time we see Optimus Prime transform in movie 1 in the alleyway.)
    One of the problems with Bayformers is their robot forms and transformations are soooo complex and time-consuming (and the cameras often have way too much shaking and foreground debris, such is Bay's style of shooting) that it's hard to appreciate the amazing artistry and engineering that goes into a single transformation!

    • @NiggaChickenSticks

  • @ILMVFX
    @ILMVFX  Před 11 lety +7

    If it's a shot requiring the addition of a CG element then, yes, our layout department will track the shot and replicate the camera in our virtual environment.

  • @ILMVFX
    @ILMVFX  Před 12 lety +3

    @SummitTraxxas We're pretty good about having the artists keep track of continuity, particularly the compositors. It's a massive amount of work but it really shows in the final product.

  • @ILMVFX
    @ILMVFX  Před 11 lety +4

    if it took 288 hours per frame to render the Driller, this means that roughly for a minute long sequence if took 288*24*60/(24*365)=40 years to render just this scene!? I don't understand really what these render hours mean (does it means that the given render time is only for single core, does it means that you are rendering frames on multiple machines at a time...) Please explain! :)

You'll learn a lot just being at a company that does the type of work you're interested in. Best of luck.

    No, the realism is due in large part to the Technical Directors (TDs) and custom shaders we develop to render materials in a photorealistic fashion. At the end of the process the entire film goes though a digital intermediate processs, or D.I., where the overall color correction is applied to define the "look" of the film.

    @ILMVFX  Před 12 lety

    Many of our artists tend to be specialists with a solid knowledge of the related disciplines. For example an animator would also have working knowledge of character rigging and could/would do it if need be, but typically that would be left to our creature technical directors.
