      If you have the money reality is most people don't have 100k sitting around even for the lowest price kit planes. Certified planes can get for 20-30k but spend that in annual cost maintaining it. If I was single or made 200k plus I could manage it but reality is spending 100k on a kit plane wife never go for that. Almost 50 years old any money I have saved needs to go to retirement now or won't have enough. I missed opportunity to get my PPL in my 20's early 1990's health was perfect, and training was lot less costly wasn't married let me have freedoms don't have now. Anyone reading this in their 20's want to get their PPL don't wait like I did. I made mistake after a few rides with a CFI he said wait till I was 40's and do it that was stupid idea because now I have few health issues although I could probably get a SI from the FAA on them do I want to hassle with 9 month wait times every 2 years. There are so many advantages when your young you can build time go to work as a glider tow pilot. That experience allows you to jump in many of these kit planes where new pilot really needs to build hours in a certified plane get instruction. Insurance cost go down with higher hour pilots so all around much better to get your PPL younger don't wait now I'm stuck.

    The Carbon Cub has a 180 HP engine; the SuperStol (as tested) has a 115 HP engine. There is no way to compare the two - even at altitude, where the turbo has some advantage. Test them against each other with the new Viking Honda turbo engine, about 200 HP. That's a fairer comparison.

    He seemed to be landing the SS like he lands the CC. (Not that he didn't say he was better at the CC than the SS). With the SS, the normal way to land is to idle, then pull back, and descend into the ground at 500 to 1000 fpm. But maybe you can't do that at 6000 ft. The take off rolls were believable.

    Price wise carbon cub is more expensive and can't fold the wings to store in a trailer your going to need a hanger for the carbon cub. Looks like the JA superstol has better suspension come in harder won't bounce with those massive shocks. The cub bounced a few times can't use the brakes to slow it down while bouncing.

    I like the SuperSTOL looks ! I never understood why the Cubcrafters have such large engines : 340 cubic inches instead of 74 for a 914 UL rotax (= 115 HP) 340 cu should give 300 HP easily, but it's just 180. It is the only unlogical thing about the Carbon Cub. About the vid : 1 more please ! 2 shaky but it won't happen again 3 wear a micro because I can't understand you here in Belgium.

    • @BetterAircraftFabric
      @BetterAircraftFabric Před 8 lety

      +DirkDucat The difference in engine horsepower is easy to explain: Rotax is high RPM engine with Reduction gear, and all its drawbacks. The Cub has a direct drive air cooled engine, super simple, super reliable, super easy to maintain. And it sounds better!

    • @simflying
      @simflying Před 8 lety

      +BetterAircraftFabric Yep, low cubature Rotax with its high rpms isn't best solution, but also Lycs, Conts, ULPowers, ... and others direct props aren't good - Rtx 912 at its max 5700 rpms turns under 2000 rpms on prop, but directs turns props as crank = higher prop tip speed = lower efectivity, high noise. Directs must have smaler, prop, or turn low rpms under best power/torque. Some compromise would be best - actually maybe diesels?
      About tests - some CZcams vids shows much shorter toffs with SuperStol, but they lift tail, before go run.
      Also some not real STOL planes show good performance, without slats and turbulators - look Aeroprakt 22 short takeoff :-)
