You can always borrow a piece of clothing or pair of shoes from a family member or friend for a special occasion, too! I remember hearing an interview about fast fashion with an older woman who said that when she was young she and her friends would "shop in each other's closets."
Wow I totally forgot shopping in other people's closests. It was so much fun as a kid. They used to do Tupperware type parties as well where people would bring old second hand clothes to someone's house for a party. I think they sold the clothes and the money was for charity.
The issue with that is that people will often refuse to give it back :/ it was already a thing when I was a teen, I heard stories from friends loosing pieces of clothing because someone wouldn't give it back... it's sad and ruined something meaningful 😢
That’s if you have people that wear the same size as you! Everyone in my family and friends group is at 5 inches taller than me. I know 0 people with the same shoes size as me and everyone has bigger clothing sizes too lol. Can’t go to formal events with shoes and clothes too big lol
@beepboop7090 mood! I'm 5'1 and have a shoesize 6. My brothers are around 5'8 and so are my parents. And some of my moms smaller shoes or clothes will fit but only dresses. And I can only borrow clothes from friends who are yound because I'm 25+ with the body of a teen🙃
For folks who want to minimize their carbon footprint but still want something fresh to wear for special events - there are also a TON of rental services that allow you to rent fancy clothes and return them!! Of course there is a small footprint with the shipping associated with the clothing, but it’s much less wasteful than buying a new outfit specifically for an occasion and only wearing it once or twice!! Also - HUGE congrats on your graduation!! You looked lovely ❤️
In past I went to checkout a rental for wedding dress. Managed to find what I needed , unfortunately the cost of rent + deposit + cost of each micro stain or tear + time frame to rent + you must professionally clean it before giving back + stress of the thought any damage will happen was equal to price of brand new one…. When I saw the quote I was speechless…. Much easier to buy and don’t worry about getting messy while having fun outdoors or drinking red wine or a toddler running to hug you after eating cake without cutlery ….
I've also found that consignment shops are good to look into. Not only will you find some really cool stuff for much cheaper and with a smaller carbon footprint, but you're also supporting local businesses
yessss . if i could go back i would have stayed home stayed in and saved my money. im 27 now and were basically stuck where we are with this economy and lack of funds. start prepping for ur success now. I was young and dumb
I just graduated with my bachelors of environmental studies so I didn’t want to buy a new dress for graduation to kind of honor and embrace what I’ve learned from my degree, so I borrowed a dress from my boyfriends sister and it was perfect! :) Just a reminder that you can ask the people around you to borrow their clothes!
I personally have fabric from either old clothes or old projects. So often times I'll just make something. Ik that this may not be an option for everyone, but it sure is for me. I hope someone finds this helpful!
Hmmm… I think I need to implement this. I have a spending problem and need to start saving for a new car. Also, I have so much crap I don’t need. I just took 3 giant garbage bags of clothes to the thrift store that I don’t wear anymore and it didn’t even scratch the surface 😫.
I was shopping for snacks for a hike the other day, and decided that I needed to go look for a new hiking shirt while I was at it. I was in the middle of looking through racks and racks of mid range expensive clothing when it hit me that it literally did not matter what I was wearing. That mountain was not going to care how I looked, and I would be no happier after my purchase. It would just be one more item I would have to stuff in my already full closet. I wore what I had on, got completely filthy on my hike, and had an amazing time. I am so over consuming just to consume.
Another option for event wear is just renting! Whenever I have any events (big birthday parties, weddings, etc) I no longer spend $100-200 on a new dress or outfit that I'll never wear again. It's great!
I NEVER buy ‘event’ clothes at full retail. I head out to the thrift and consignment stores, Mercari, eBay, or Temu. recent case in point: I was inited to a very formal back tie party to honor a friend and I had nothing suitable for the level of formality, weather and venue. I looked in the department stores ad found nada that didn’t look super matronly for under $200! Ugh! I found a pair of ivory silk crepe palazzo pants $32, and a great slinky silk knit black wrap top $20, at a local consignment store, then got a sheer sequin duster jacket from Temu for $11. I had black suede kitten pumps, and I got soooo many compliments. Plus, I will wear the components of my outfit for many years. No need to accept low quality retail clothes for high prices!
I wore my old prom dress to graduation and it was perfect. I loved it and was so happy to wear something from such a happy moment for another milestone!
I made my own graduation gown. Yes it was using new fabric and spending money, but i really enjoyed the process and learned new sewing skills i can use in the future on it. I made it so i can wear it for nice evening events again in the future. Also means money wasnt going towards fast fashion mills. So i feel like it was worth it for me and ill have that memory now.
At my college in the girls dorm we had an up for grabs room, girls could leave clothes or accessories they no longer wanted in there, and then anyone was free to “go shopping” in that room like a thrift shop, but everything was free! It was a great way for us to move on from what we no longer wore, and still get new styles without spending money or making more waste. I wore a dress I got from there for my graduation
Used a dress I've had in the back of my closet for YEARS; WELL worth it! Looked great, felt great. And it didn't cost me a dime! It's amazing how stuff feels when you don't wear it for a while lol
I love the idea of a no clothes year! I often go almost a year without buying clothes. My exception is going to a concert and getting tshirt to remember it. Or a vacation. Those are once in a lifetime chances. And i wear band tshirts on the regular so its not like they arent getting used! 😊
My mom's friend runs an art gallery and antique store with his husband. For prom, I got these absolutely beautiful peacock feather earrings from around 1920. They were cheap, gorgeous, and really stood out in my photos! Not only that, but he helped me to color match and alter some garments I already had. We also got to use his gallery space as a backdrop for my graduation photos for free! Outside of my high school graduation cap and gown, we ended up only spending 50 dollars on eventwear for both prom and graduation! It pays both environmentally and financially to know a guy
Ur right. Wish I saw this before my last event. I had a perfectly fine dress already but felt the need to go out & buy a new one smh 🤦🏻♀️ I really didn’t need a new dress or to spend money unnecessarily.
You have such good style. My style is "i am dressed" lmao. I havent bought new clothes in like 15 years because i spend my disposable income on books. My mom finds me decent coothes at garage sales that she'll randomly give to me 😂 Congratulations on graduating!!
I just graduated the day before yesterday ! Finding evening/special occasion wear is so hard as a 5'3/160cm guy but I was luckily able to borrow a black suit from a friend of my mom :)
I also graduated this year and chose not to buy new clothes -like my mom said- I wore the same outfit I wore for my HS graduation and it felt extra special
I remember for my highschool graduation i had no choice but to buy a new dress because the dress code was so strict. I had nothing that met the standards :(
My uni REQUIRED we buy brand new caps, gowns, tassels, stoles, and even the freaking logo'd zipper tag on the gowns. If we didn't have everything, even the zipper pull that could only be seen from a few feet away, we wouldn't be allowed to walk. I borrowed literally everything. It was such cheap polyester too!
I told my sister she didn’t need a new dress for her graduation because she already had so many beautiful dresses in her closet that her friends have never seen. She still went out and bought one. I’ve been too cheap to buy clothes because I can’t really afford them, but there is something peaceful about not buying clothes. Every time I used to buy something new, although I would start out excited about it, later it would sink in that I spent money I’d didn’t have to. And then I end up hating myself. Imma try this no buy year.
Yeah, but each outfit you chose was really nice, tbh! I tend not to buy anything for myself (raised in poverty), and i end up wearing my clothes to threads. Good for the environment and my waller, but it tends to be a little self neglectful....my partner is helpinf me with that though
I reused a dress but bought my gown and hood separately because the school one looked like a trash bag. The one I got looked like a fancy judge one - quality! Also, I’m probably never having a wedding so $80 for my only “walk down the aisle” is pretty much a bargain 😅
This is kinda fair- but me personally, prom is coming up in a year, and i really have no clothes fancy enought for it. It is a big milestone, and i want to feel fresh and pretty on the day. But definitely worth picking out a dress (or outfit in general) that ill be able to wear again in the future
My city has a free prom dress giveaway through the library. Cute ones that were only worn once. If your city doesn't have something similar you can find things at thrift stores or online sites that sell secondhand. Or if you or someone you know has sewing skills they can make you a custom one.
When you are this young you have to build up your wardrobe. Buy something classy you could wear for different occasions. If you buy heels and a purse chose a color you can combine with different outfits. Buy something that you really like and not because it's on trend. Ten years later I still wear my prom dress.
Another way is u can always borrow clothes from friends and family if they are in similar sizes or if u are younger child in the fam like me handmedowns of cousins and siblings😊
Yes but also if you want to buy a cute dress for yourself for a major event that you will wear again and again that’s totally okay because you only live once and you’re only going to graduate for this specific thing once
I, for the first time in my 53 years, didn't buy new clothes for a funeral. Really, who was I dressing for? Still working on the rest of my shopping, but baby steps, right? 😊

Seconded!! I borrowed a dress from my grandma for my high school graduation and it made the day so much more special.

What did you study?

Yes!
I graduate next year… gotta remember this and not obsess over another material thing that will sit in my closet.
yessss . if i could go back i would have stayed home stayed in and saved my money. im 27 now and were basically stuck where we are with this economy and lack of funds. start prepping for ur success now. I was young and dumb

The graduation gown is the new purchase for the occasion. Why buy more new clothes? I like your way of thinking. Also, congratulations 🍾 🙂
I personally have fabric from either old clothes or old projects. So often times I'll just make something. Ik that this may not be an option for everyone, but it sure is for me. I hope someone finds this helpful!
i’m on my second no buy year! it’s been really liberating.
Hmmm… I think I need to implement this. I have a spending problem and need to start saving for a new car. Also, I have so much crap I don’t need. I just took 3 giant garbage bags of clothes to the thrift store that I don’t wear anymore and it didn’t even scratch the surface 😫.

I’ve been on a no buy for years 😅 still wear the same clothes
I LOVE buying formal clothing at the bins and then saving it for a special occasion. Never stop making your videos! They are amazing!!
An entire year?! Wow. You go girl! That’s amazing.
Congrats on your graduation! You’re a badass and I reference your page frequently to deter myself from wasting money. Keep going ❤
Love this goal and mindset! Congrats on your accomplishments! ❤🎉
Congratulations 👩🏼🎓👩🏼🎓👩🏼🎓✨🥳🥳🥳🥳🤗🤗love and a positive and beautiful perspective
I did the same thing for the first time this year and I’m so happy I did. Proud of anyone who can do this too 🥰
I love this exquisite human...
She MUST be protected AT AAAALLLL COSTS!!
I wore my old prom dress to graduation and it was perfect. I loved it and was so happy to wear something from such a happy moment for another milestone!
What a great message… not celebrating my clothes but my accomplishments.
I made my own graduation gown. Yes it was using new fabric and spending money, but i really enjoyed the process and learned new sewing skills i can use in the future on it. Congrats on graduation!! Your channel is so inspiring!!
Oooh that black top with the red/pink skirt was so cute on you!
I have not bought anything for myself in over 2 years! Honestly... I'm not missing out on anything! And I'm still happy and enjoying what I have!
Congrats for being smart about this & for graduating 💖
Rent the runway is a great option for event wear!

My two daughters have been thrifting and I think it’s pretty cool. Most of their tops are from the thrift store . It’s been saving me so much money.
"I'm not celebrating my dress at graduation" wow🤍🤍🤍
I love the idea of a no clothes year! I often go almost a year without buying clothes. My exception is going to a concert and getting tshirt to remember it. Or a vacation. Those are once in a lifetime chances. And i wear band tshirts on the regular so its not like they arent getting used! 😊
I really need to do this! I have way too much stuff
My mom's friend runs an art gallery and antique store with his husband. For prom, I got these absolutely beautiful peacock feather earrings from around 1920. A really good sentiment i need to keep in mind!!
I love this. And congratulations!
Happy Graduation!🎓🥳
I have about five different “event” outfits that I rotate every time I go on vacation or to a party of some sort.
Congrats on your graduation! 🎉
You have such good style. My style is "i am dressed" lmao. I havent bought new clothes in like 15 years because i spend my disposable income on books. My mom finds me decent coothes at garage sales that she'll randomly give to me 😂 Congratulations on graduating!!

Congrats!!! I’m an LU girl too!
Your videos are inspiring!! ❤
I love this & Congratulations 👏🏼
Congratulations!!!
Happy graduation!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS 🎉
I just graduated the day before yesterday ! Finding evening/special occasion wear is so hard as a 5'3/160cm guy but I was luckily able to borrow a black suit from a friend of my mom :)
Congratulations on graduation!!
Your Destin shirt 🥰 we love close to there ❤
Congratulations!
🎉 congratulations .
Congrats 🎉🎈🎊!!!
I need a no buy year, but also need to loose some pounds to facilitate this. You’ve inspired me - thank you! (subscriber +1!)
A smart woman. I totally agree with her philosophy on not buying stuff you don’t really need.
Agreed, altho, I could NEVER
I also graduated this year and chose not to buy new clothes -like my mom said- I wore the same outfit I wore for my HS graduation and it felt extra special
For my graduation I wore a dress that I bought for an event a couple years prior ❤
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I remember for my highschool graduation i had no choice but to buy a new dress because the dress code was so strict. I had nothing that met the standards :(
Congratulations 🎊 for graduating
Ohh to have the control you have 😢
Honestly buying a dress to cover up for graduation is weird haha but I did it
My uni REQUIRED we buy brand new caps, gowns, tassels, stoles, and even the freaking logo'd zipper tag on the gowns. If we didn't have everything, even the zipper pull that could only be seen from a few feet away, we wouldn't be allowed to walk. I borrowed literally everything. It was such cheap polyester too!

Imma try this no buy year.
You can also rent dresses too
My girl❤❤❤
If possible you could also borrow from a friend for situations like this 💕
You better go girl. I love your channel. Keep it coming 😊
Yeah, but each outfit you chose was really nice, tbh! I tend not to buy anything for myself (raised in poverty), and i end up wearing my clothes to threads. Good for the environment and my waller, but it tends to be a little self neglectful....my partner is helpinf me with that though
Congratulations on the graduation!
i have finally started no buying this year
and im suprised how much clothes i actually have... that ive never worn
Love this ❤️ The black and red looked so good on you js! Congrats on graduation🎉

I know people who wear their prom dress for multiple proms, military formals or Greek life formals!
When you are this young you have to build up your wardrobe. Buy something classy you could wear for different occasions. For my graduation I got together with my cousins and swapped dresses 👗
Congratulations
I wanted to do that but eventually caved in and got a dress for grad😿 luckily it’s classy enough to wear on the casual
Majority of my shirts are just athletic wear
This is true! Any money that can be saved can go to a future hole ❤
I loved the black top and skirt. Pin that look for a night out or something.
Is that an iPhone 11or 12? You're definitely the budget queen ❤❤
Yes but also if you want to buy a cute dress for yourself for a major event that you will wear again and again that’s totally okay because you only live once and you’re only going to graduate for this specific thing once
How old were you when u started?? I lost time in depression wanting to start over.
Congratulations! 🎉
What did you graduate in?
If you’re on a no buy year, do you allows yourself to replace things that too warn out?
HOW DOES EVERY FUCKING TIME HE SAYS AN AD WILL HAPPEN, AN AD COMES UP.
❤❤❤🎉
So how does paying for your graduation regalia fit into a no-buy-year plan?
Congrats! What degree!?
CAN I GET AN AMEN!? 🎉
What is your major? 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
🎉🎉🎉🎉
I, for the first time in my 53 years, didn't buy new clothes for a funeral. Really, who was I dressing for? Still working on the rest of my shopping, but baby steps, right? 😊
second one looks kinda like micky mouse
isn't this obvious to everyone? or did i just grow up poor 😂
omg if ur gown is ugly u would be wrong at my high school the caps and gowns are brown poop brown.
