One thing I think that's impressive that no one seems to mention is that the power inverter for these new cars is 2400W @120V. That can basically power anything as long as your battery is charged which is kinda insane. Usually it's been maxed out at like 400W. You basically never have to carry around one of those big backup batteries.
Until you’re trying to start your car next morning 😁
Car has to be running and the high watt version is only on hybrid
@@testtesttesttesttest884 Ford has the 2.4kw and 7.2kw meanwhile im over here sad with only 400w :(

It's actually really useful on steep descents. Like where 1-low is slow, but 2-low wants to run away on you.
He did mention it worked well for him.
Someone needs to do a montage of Doug saying “crawl control”. Will probably be a 10 minute video
Toyota - in my opinion - is probably the best car manufacturer out there today. I own a Highlander and a 2022 Tundra and they are just solid, reliable vehicles and Toyota takes really good care of their customers.
Keep what you have. This new stuff is unadulterated, overpriced junk. And it's made in Mexico.

Nice truck. (No way I could afford a $65,000 vehicle like that, but I wouldn’t be adverse to owning one…) 😊
I thought the trailhunter was for crawling and slower speeds and the TRD pro was for high speed thrashing?
Yeah. TrailHunter has the air compressor which is ideal for airing down on more challenging technical trails. TRD Pro has the shock absorber seats for higher speed offroading.
You are completely right. Doug gets this wrong in every video talking about the TrailHunter. The TRD Pro is a Baja style high speed desert runner. The TrailHunter is a RockLander (rock crawler meets overlander).
yeah, the trailhunter has a higher payload, the pro is an offroad toy.

The Trailhunter is designed for low speed off road including rock crawling. The TRD Pro is set up as a higher speed Baja desert runner.
Baja and crawl I get but is there a third "overland" category as well? I thought overland overlapped with crawl and that this truck was basically meant for both but Doug seems to think this is for overland, TRD is for crawling, and neither is for Baja

“All-New, All-Conquering Trailhunter
Toyota has long been the choice of those who forge their own paths to adventure. Now, the choice is even clearer. Introducing the Tacoma Trailhunter-conceived, designed and built to be a ready-made overlanding beast.”
Overlanding is just a term for getting to hard to reach places usually with reference to camping or exploring. Suspension on the Trailhunter is tuned for carrying heavier load outs. “Old Man Emu® Suspension
Overlanders need a truck that can do more than just take them down the toughest trails; they also need it to carry all their gear and supplies for extended time off the grid. In the past there was only a TRD model and it was target toward all around 4WD. Now they’ve focused TRD as more of a Ford Raptor competitor - desert runner, suspensions seats, hitting jumps etc…And Trailhunter for overlanding.

The integrated compressor is designed to last the life of the truck, and to be used frequently. When off-road, reliability is key to survival, and nobody wants to be let down by a cheap portable compressor. Also it's useful for inflating watercraft, air mattresses, and used to run an impact gun for wheel removal. Much, much better than a portable. Kudos to Toyota for putting together such a comprehensive, quality package!
actually I prefer a cordless ryobe. no need to run a hose.
Showing similar vehicles that sold on Cars & Bids to the one you’re showcasing on the video is a nice touch that could possibly add new buyers and sellers.

They will in 20 years 😂😂😂
Love the paint and wheel combo!
Doug you keep saying the TRD pro is for technical rock crawling and the TrailHunter is not. when it’s the other way around, the trd pro is a pre runner/high speed off roader with more emphasis on going fast off road than being technical. The trail hunter is definitely more suited to do technical crawling type off roading. i would know i own a trd pro 3rd gen lol. the armor and old man emu shocks on the hunter make it way better at technical driving

12 mpg on a hybrid four cylinder??? I think Doug is totally breezing over this. I don’t care if you are doing Baja races with the thing, that is insane. What is the pay off for using a drivetrain that your fanbase doesn’t like/want? No mpg gain. Power is pretty much the same. More complexity and inevitably less reliability. And they are forcing it down your throat by making it the only option on upper trim levels. Great truck in a lot of ways but this powertrain seems to have missed the mark so much it isn’t even fun. I wish Doug would have dug into this a bit more (no pun intended). Seems inexplicable and inexcusable.
Cry cry cry😭😭😭
"Power is pretty much the same" Dude, WHAT? LOL
Most other channels are seeing mid 20's under normal use on the new Tacoma
Exactly and all the battery and electrical components take up all the space under and behind the rear seats. If they had put a 6 cylinder with a turbo or supercharger I would probably get one. Would like to get a Ranger Raptor, but mark ups on those are over $70k. Insane what people are charging for midsized trucks.
ICE vehicles are clearly going away with all this high-stressed engine boosted over complicated mess. ICE vehicles are increasingly only for the rich as they try to compete with EV horsepower numbers.. Meanwhile EVs are getting less expensive by the month and ridiculous performance. Just wait until Chinese EVs are being imported you will be getting a truck for $25k that will have 500hp and 400 miles range with super fast charging. These days will be here way before 2030. It is still only 2024.
$63,900 before markups.
Quick math:
$6,400 down (10%)
+ tax and interest (7.64)
60 Months Payment: $1260
@12.5% of take home pay you should be earning $157,500 annually to be looking at this car (assuming the appropriate taxes are coming out of your paycheck).
National average wage (US Census): $63795.
Percentage making $150k annually: approx. 8.3%
5 Year price increase Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro:
2019 MSRP: $42,960
2024 MSRP: $63,900
49% increase
Wage growth 2019-2024: 1.7% (Source: US Treasury)
These price increases far outpace inflation and wage growth.
Toyota is targeting 8% of total market. Or people who just want to act fiscally irresponsible.
Why would anyone get stuck paying 5 years for a disposable plastic truck with a 4 cylinder?!??
The Trailhunter is the Rock Crawler trim, fyi. Also, the high mount air intake is not a snorkel, though I imagine it has a high fording depth, but technically, the air intake is not water tight and you will like end up flooding your engine if water hits your windscreen.

companies will remove every single button and we all complain and then there’s this doofus who complains about the one company still adding physical buttons. if you think this is bad think about what liquid is gonna do to the electrical components of those massive touch screens or capacitive panels 🙄 and then instead of whatever function the button controls being broken the screen that controls several or perhaps every single function in the car is gone completely. just because it’s more minimalist and out of the way doesn’t mean it isn’t susceptible to the exact same thing.
Toyota employee here. The snorkel is actually not for river crossing but to receive better air quality than what you’d get at the level the stock intake get air air.
In other words it sits higher up to avoid getting more dust in your air filter.
TLDR: DONT CROSS RIVERS WITH THIS TYPE OF SNORKEL ITS NOT MEANT FOR THAT.
The front metal loop under the front bumper is only rated as a tie down point. I do think it’s super weird it doesn’t have recovery hooks in the front stock when it’s got all the other off road goodies. On my off-road vehicles I always have an air compressor permanently mounted and wired up. It’s a must out on the sand or trails. It’s nice cause it’s you know it’s always ready to go but it does come at the cost of some space. I’ve been watching your videos since like 2016! Love all your reviews man!

Buying this truck at $63k when you can get a GX overtrail at $70k is... *boggle*
What makes less sense to me is that the Land Cruiser Prado is priced at 76k and marked up to 90k+.
True, but the GX isn't a truck. But a made in Mexico truck should not cost 63K.
I know I should never bring up Ram in Toyota video but the RHO starts $5k more than this with 1500 payload, more clearance, useable back seat, and 0/60 under 5 seconds.
Looks like the tailgate has a weatherstrip seal along the sides. Nice if you run a tonneau cover or cap.
My 2008 Toyota Tundra gets 12 plus miles per gallon in city driving and I'm hard on the throttle. I've got 60,000 miles on the odometer and 381hp! I'll never break any fuel economy record, but it really does put a smile on my face every day except Sunday when I fill her up!
I have a 2007 Tundra with just over 300,000 miles. Good job keeping the mileage low on your truck and know your truck will take you farther than you ever thought possible. Only issue I have with your statement, unless you have a super charger, our 5.7l v8 only has 381hp which I don’t think I would trade for the base v6 of the current model. The hybrid model, that’s a different beast

Wanted this one so bad but the price is just insane look at the competitors, the gas mileage in real world use is no better than last gen, we know it probably will be more reliable since it's a toyota but we still don't know for sure..

I drove the Landcruiser utes in Australia and they all had stock snorkels. That’s the source of the turbo noise. It’s way more noticeable when it’s right next to your passenger side window.

Weirdos who will only be pounding mall pavement anyway.
It's not about power, it's about reliability. That 4 cylinder under a lot of stress over time will not last as long as the 3.5 or 5.7
@@juliusp8269 Toyota 4-cyl engines last forever if not overloaded. The MAIN issue is forced induction. They had to force induction to get the same 'power' as the outgoing larger engines...which always ends in premature failure as compared to N/A. They will lose a lot of sales to the Frontier.
It needs a V8
Any idea when/if we are still getting a trail hunter tundra? They said we would get one when the new tundra was launched and they’ve been quiet about it since. Also will they be updating the tundra with these improvements (bed lights, tailgate buttons on both sides, recovery hooks, etc)?
Unfortunately, it's not a 'snorkel' since it's not sealed water tight, which means it WON'T help when crossing water since water can still seep through at the bottom. Rather, it's a 'high mount air intake' to take in less dirt/dust from the trail.

Yeah because speed in a straight line is EXACTLY what everyone is looking for in an overlander... what a dumb trash comment
JD Powers rated Ford 28th in reliability…slightly ahead of Land Rover. 😂😂😂
Buy that Ford!
@cenciende9401 I agree that speed was a weird thing for him to bring up but they're also very equal offroad. Basically the same ground clearance and approach/departure angles. The ranger does have the better 4wd system which includes a locking front diff that the toyota doesn't have. I would take the ranger raptor or a ram rebel over the Tacoma personally.
@user-vx7vi3vq1c Ford and Toyota are basically tied in cost of ownership though. It's mainly the 10 speed autos that caused reliability issues with fords and most of those problems have been worked out.
I can't wait to see the Trailhunter new Camry come out!
I think the turbo noise you mentioned is the intake sound from the snorkel
I think what we’re beginning to see, and it is Japan leading the way. Engineers have found a way to make a four cylinder powerful ❤

@@user-ju1qx9dc3w Oh how so?
@@conman1395 yeah good point.
Yes it’s good for Toyota specification but one thing I don’t like is Upper front grill design but I think this can be modified later . 😊
My opinion about overlanding vehicles is the personalization and modification of the vehicle itself. The ability to choose what equipment you install, and where/why or how gives the vehicle more of an intrinsic connection. Toyota providing things like the utility bar, the lights, and maybe even the compressor kinda takes that away from the end user. I can see the appeal and see where there is a market, but I feel like it's doing a lot to placate people who aren't taking this further than the farmers' market grass parking lot. Especially at $63k.
Four cylinder turbo is the deal breaker on these….really, the MPG isn’t that spectacular. The rat’s nest under the hood is a jaw dropping mess
