Phish
October 20, 1998
Sessions at West 54th, New York, NY
Sleep#, Frankie Says, Ghost, Roggae, Guyute, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Driver#, Albuquerque*, Birds of a Feather, Piper, Taste**
Played for "Sessions at West 54th," a PBS series hosted by David Byrne (of Talking Heads). "Birds," "Ghost," and "Taste" were broadcast January 9, 1999 on the program, in addition to interviews with the band about fan taping and the Halloween musical costumes. #Acoustic. *Played (acoustic) while tapes were being changed; was not taped. **Quasi-encore: Phish had finished their written setlist (though skipping "The Moma Dance," which was on the list given to the cameramen) and had some time left ("Ghost" was only 10 minutes long). After a flood of audience requests (including many for Byrne to sit in), Trey said, "Okay, let's just play Taste," at Page's suggestion. - Hudba
This show was played the day I was born! What a wonderful song!
I once heard that the definition of greatness was the ability to make the complicated seem very simple. Such a great band.
Miles Davis....coming off Bebop created with kind of blue that very concept through incredibly complex musical interpretation and theory to create modal jazz more about emoting something Phish punn intended got hooked and gaffed on that concept. Mainly through Zappa he was first to turn Stravinsky concepts onto rock funk grooves. Phish perfected it sessions should be album ghost guyute, taste, so clean. Bring it full circle miles kind of blue were all first takes. " First idea right idea".
@@ryanphelan6861 "First thought best thought!" Because it's usually untethered. Unburdened by whatever ego or bullshit is around to correct or change said thought. It just is.
And add to that by doing it with joy and kindness.
there aren't many bands that can take a studio album and make it better live.. amazingly perfect
Ghost is great an unjammed ghost I love Prague, Denver, I was at at lemonwheel, and Radio City other great versions, taste is so clean, but guyute under bright lights that's when these guys rarely missed a change and were and open channel. I wholeheartedly agree with your premise. Inspired, tight, clean, innovative playing by a group on the pinnacle of their game. Watched it on TV taped on vhs: ). Zappa would have been impressed just imo. Took his or orchestrated sections added woven jams . Formidable c'est magnifique 👌🎶🎶
That taste… fuck me, throw the studio one out for this one 😂
Trey has a beautiful right hand. His pick grip is so relaxed and he focuses on a really meaty part of the string in his attack. Good palming, but not too much. I really am inspired by this player.
hes also so far from flashy and insytead incredibly logicak and ractical. With alk his feel his alternate picking is another galaxy intechnique from say a virtuoso like matheney. He worshios reinardt and that wuick mimnimal movemenys allows his to drive a composition. Was overwgelming magic fr mr as au kid
yeah that solo produced goosebumps
This is why I love Phish! My second favorite song of theirs. Reba will always twist my brain around.
It's about hearing all the parts at the same time. As I write these words I swear I am actually sober. That is what made me realize how good these guys are. As I got older I thought it would lose it's charm but this is a music lovers feast if you have your ears open enough to hear it.
If Trey would let the other guys play more this would be the best band on the planet!
Yes, this is one of the best bands on the planet. imho
The timing in the song blows my fucking mind.
This is by far one of most favorite songs! I've always loved this tune
Maybe they aren't the best band in the world but they are the best band I've ever heard.
I think the 7/22/97 taste from walnut creek is certainly the best.. and it was played during an incredible lightning storm
Absolutely
Oh my god. This brings me back to high school. By FAR the best selection of these recordings - Thanks Phasinated!!! I don't get goosebumps, but I get lost in time whenever I see older Phish classics on here.
agree
What a sweet sounding ride, and ride playing of course
Trey is absolutely one of the best guitarists in the world 😮😮😮😮
This is a great composition
i love how they decided they were gonna do taste like a few seconds before playing. LOVE this band!
Beautiful.
❤️
I was a senior in high school...seems like yesterday.
Beyond great
Sad it’ll be another year until I see them
How i wish I could have been at these kind of concerts, Phish is sooooo wonderful and it would have been mindblowing to have been there, I hope the summer concerts are this good :D
You know after all the shows I have seen. (really only like 5 but ;-)). I still LOVE hearing them play in a calm environment. I think it allows them to be more confident and concentrate more. I LOVE PHISH!
Was at this show, got a free ticket, they wouldn't let me in, had to miss some of it but drove 2 hours so I waited outside and finally someone that worked there asked my name and said on yea you are on the list, so I said can my friends come in too? I didn't even know their names but the 3 or 4 of them were waiting with me hoping to get in and the kind lady said yes so I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did. Of course being NY, my car got towed but they didn't find the bag I had sitting out thankfully. The show was a ton of fun, sat on a couch not 50 feet from the band while watching this.
Sick
Love you guys so very much! Thanks for years of experiences, amazing music and people around the united states and at this very moment for your jam putting my 6 yr old twins to nap!!! They are so interested in you already so young! One day they will come to experience the amazingness that plays b4 them!!! LIVE , 1❤
Mike and Page pretty much dominate every improv segment. They're the bees knees.
one of my favs as well. i was happy to hear a version similar in reading
amazing concert and song
Holy Mother of Trey 🙏🏼🔥💥☄️🌪💫🍄🎸
Ernesto does not disappoint, for sure.
Thanks for posting this great one, had it from another source but it was shut down. Very jazzed to find it!
many thanks for posting this @phasinated
thank you SO much... I have been searching for this...
Goosebumps what?
More Cow Bell!
amazing. and yes.. goosebumps
i agree - what crazy talk is that
word thanks man will do
easily their best version
that was great, thanks.
i want this dvd if they make it. all these videos are awsome
ill have to check it out. thanks man
Dank
I think you'll enjoy it. As edited live Phish albums go, it's really good. Great show and sound quality is ridiculous. Wolfman's has some great jamming, and the Mike's > Weekapaug is both awesome and hilarious, esp if you know your old Floyd and Doors. Definitely give it a listen.
still love this. page seems to lose the key a little bit at some points, but he's still on point like everyone else. trey brought his santana chops and Jon screwed his balls on extra tight. great show, makes me feel like i'm listening for the first time.
Did I just hear a fan call for "Freebird?"
3/1/97 Hamburg (Slip Stitch and Pass) is pretty damn solid.
go trey!
Ping!
wow
Get the walnut Creek DVD and watch the Taste off of it. It will melt you brother. Heck that taste is on youtube
somebody in the audience yelled "freebird!"
When Trey is beard-less, he looks like he just graduated college
Man we’re just getting going
IM SO HIGH ON CIGARETTES RIGHT NOW
Treyolajams, wanted to play some of that new BriaEno /story of the ghost spaced out in ambience. Fishman is cool.
I'd have trouble staying in my seat
Page turn the volume down alittle damn lol
I would LOVE to get the whole appearance on dvd. Anyone know if it existings on the interwebz? I have what aired on TV, but so much more goodness here. Thanks for upping these.
he's actually also fixing that foul thing in his ear aka earpiece mic.
7:00 splooge my god man
anti-splooge 7:44
Any info on this show? Was it a Press release for new album or something?
god i miss that tone....hope he finds the sound he's looking for...
sadly that tone aint coming back.
A full day of culinary waste.
at 6:03 you can see he holds his pick normally.
@GratefulVince Funny how Phish divides fans on what they like about them. Personally they started to lose me around 97-98. I started seeing them in '92 and it was the ferocity of their playing like they had something prove combined with their creative energy pushing directions in music as a unit that just blew me away from '92-'96. Once they started settling into more of a rhythm section foundation they would jam on top of it became less interesting to me. Still good shows though.
@MusicalPhish true, but you can barely hear Trey's guitar. A tad is all i meant
A concise and fiery version of this tune, and I absolutely love it, but Trey still manages to botch the walk down at the end!
Great performance, but they needed to bring Trey's guitar up a bit more. Was kind of drowned out before the jam started.
oh but dude this is a song that page shines on. maybe during the intro he could turn it down a TAD but thats it.
send the link?
@flyingdemon1 this made me spark a raging phatty, but idk about popping one haha.
how do people know fish was tripping? lol
@conroze yea kinda an inside joke
This is by far one of most favorite songs! I've always loved this tune
