Phish
October 20, 1998
Sessions at West 54th, New York, NY
Sleep#, Frankie Says, Ghost, Roggae, Guyute, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Driver#, Albuquerque*, Birds of a Feather, Piper, Taste**
Played for "Sessions at West 54th," a PBS series hosted by David Byrne (of Talking Heads). "Birds," "Ghost," and "Taste" were broadcast January 9, 1999 on the program, in addition to interviews with the band about fan taping and the Halloween musical costumes. #Acoustic. *Played (acoustic) while tapes were being changed; was not taped. **Quasi-encore: Phish had finished their written setlist (though skipping "The Moma Dance," which was on the list given to the cameramen) and had some time left ("Ghost" was only 10 minutes long). After a flood of audience requests (including many for Byrne to sit in), Trey said, "Okay, let's just play Taste," at Page's suggestion. - Hudba
Fish's face around 1:00 is priceless. trippppiinnnnn
Does not get better than this. dialed in..so much fun. .
The older it gets, the better it is. I just love it to much....
This is my favorite Ghost of all time. Nice and mellow, with good full band involvement and a nice finish. Not too long and not too short. I've heard a lot of them. I feel like once they switched the song out of its 1997 mode for the album, the extended live versions started to drag a bit. This one is long enough that it has a nice jam, but is not so long that it gets boring. I can't get enough of the beginning, too, with its loops and the soft way Fish comes in with the drums to get it going.
You have this super clean perfect version. Favorite as well. Prague was wildest, Denver 11.17.97 was most balanced , and radio City was most unique Trey playing a euphoric jingle to end the show. 5 rows back one of those shows everyone was already nostalgic. Nobody chatting friends hugging. Those four are just my personal favorite but totally agree in tight neat balanced music an rhythm melodies this can't be topped. Same for me with 6inute bold as love in Paris 97 expressing themselves so clearly collectively I'll take it over jammed out versions any day. Such a good band 96 through Cypress opened many doors and ideas. ✌️100% agree enjoy summer🌞😎
Agreed.
7.12.03
This discussion is all well and good but 7-23-97 still exists and there really shouldn't be any debate over GOAT version because of its existence.
I feel that no other band compares to Phish. There is something about there sounds and beats that just are.........I can't even describe it sometimes. I like other bands but I love Phish.
any musician will tell you the most important person in the band is, the drummer, Fishman is so clock
fishman looks tuned in!!!
And that is precisely why this band is one of the greatest ever.
Fish really cracked it home.. wow
PMA
That delay effect Trey does at 8:57 is totally acid inspired. Mike was smiling the whole time what an amazing moment for everyone in that room including David Byrne!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
1998 was a really neat year.
Each one of Fishman's limbs is an autonomous entity...
Thank you SOOO much. I have been waiting for this to hit YT since it became. I can't believe it took so long. Better late than never I suppose. I missed it when it aired and have been bummed ever since about it.
Fishman at 1:15 : "Holy fuck that wall is made of jello. Quick look away. SHIT THAT ONE IS TOO. CLOSE EYES CLOSE EYES CLOSE EYES"
This was it. The REAL Phish... nothin comes close to the 97-00 years imo

Fishman rules
Ah, Fishman. I think every drummer's gotta do those expressions on stage at some point in life :D
Expressions of awe and astonishment of the utter absurdity
oh my god paige
He thought he was in the Thriller video for a second...
wow grayte
if one could make phish gravy, it might taste something like this.
Fishman is definitely on mushrooms or something in this. His pupils are huge!
@phishinvan I bought the book the day it came out in book stores years ago. And have read it and been inspired by it for many years. I was just curious as to how he brought you here. Have you ever seen Phish live?

No slap bass part?
Fishman's pupils @1:16
Anyone know why they no longer play the intro like this anymore? Trey doesn't throw the loops anymore in the intro it seems POST HIATUS.
He thought it was silly and reminded him of the late 90s when he was all screwed up
Pupils.
@13kover How'd that happen? Really curious. I know he was a Phish fan. Wondering how he brought you here.
Does anyone know how Trey gets those noises in the beginning? I know it's a Boomerang phrase sampler, but I don't know how he gets the squeal noise.
dirtdirt check out 8:57 do you know what delay effect he is using there?
DigiTech Whammy pedal and volume swells
Fishman admitted taking acid before the recording of this segment. Don't be so nieve my friends.........
Fishman's trippin face!!!
yummy yum yum
@ashyhud when doesn't fishman look like he's dropped a few hits of acid?
lay off the ride fish. tink tink tink tink tink tink tink tink.
jesus fish is trippin balls
11 fucking days till Amherst
page, that is all
Yeah.
True fishman is a metronome, but I don't know if there's any one most important part of a band you know?
shit where is this
Who was trippin'? You were.
where is this show from????
mAngotronic jedi PBS in session with host David Byrne known for fortman of talking heads.
acid hahah
@andy23822 proof?
i read somewhere that fishman cant keep rhythm and he listens to other band members such as trey for direction in terms of rhythm
How can play drums if he's fucking hip up? :D
Muscle memory, repetition, perfection, he’s comfortable doing what he loves, etc, etc
too bad good music has been banned from TV....
This seems really awkward
Sorry, naive.......
