  • Why is Gibraltar British? For most of history Gibraltar was ruled by various Iberian powers, but in 1704 England seized it from Spain, and despite several attempts to retake it over the centuries, it's belonged to Britain ever since.

    Also, I feel like Spain is extremely hypocritical by continuing to demand the return of Gibraltar while refusing to give Morocco back the cities of Ceuta and Melilla. I personally think that Spain and Morocco should both shut up and accept that they will never get those cities back.

    • @Lucas24997
      @Lucas24997 Před rokem +21

      Not really, first Ceuta and Melilla are core parts of the Spanish nation, being considered as Spanish as Madrid or Oviedo and their inhabitants have the same rights as any other Spaniard, while Gibraltar is, by the UN, a colony of Great Britian. Something that the Treaty of Utrech also also states.

    • @OnlyGrafting
      @OnlyGrafting Před rokem +9

      @@Lucas24997 the UN isn't the best place to look for this. Their idea of free speech is still based on the knee bent version they made to appease the Soviets. • @ces5263
      @ces5263 Před rokem +7

      @@OnlyGrafting No. First of all Ceuta and Melilla were part of Spain before morroco even exist, Gibraltar was given by Spain to the British, thats a big difference, also this territories have the same rights as the rest of Spain, there is no independent governor of this places. Also British extended their land in Gibraltar broken what was extipulated in the treaty, as example the Spanih civil War, at that time Gibraltar increased their territory because our internal problems. Nowadays their are building in Spanish sovereign sea. So the difference is that Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish from a long time (Already in roman and visigothic times they were rule from the Iberian Peninsula) and the British are fucking pirates.

    On the topic of the modern political contention surrounding the sovereignty and control of Gib: Crossing the border from Spain back into Gib my non-European spouse was blatantly racially profiled by the Spanish border guards (all white). They demanded to see her passport (as white Spaniards & Gibraltarians swanned by unchecked), refused to concede she hadn’t broken any immigration laws, refused to let us go for over an hour. It took an amazingly helpful and sympathetic S. Asian-British border staff member to convince them to let us go back into UK territory. On top of that, the Spanish consulate refused to grant my SO a Schengen Visa despite having no valid reason not to. My spouse met all of the residency requirements. Apparently they are notorious for harassing non-white people on the border even if they’re accompanied by European descended family.
    I didn’t really like Gibraltar- too crowded, horrible traffic, not that much to do. On a related note I am a big leftist and critic of neo-colonial stuff. But I’ll never criticise the British administration of Gibraltar when the alternative is what we were treated to at the border by the Spaniards. Unlike the Chagos Islands, no one is having their human rights violated here. No one. Gibraltar is no shame on Britain. Spain is even more proud of its white supremacist colonial past, especially with their arguments of “we didn’t wipe them out, we bred with them!” - yes, ‘bred’ with them to control them and destroy their culture…
