great and accurate info here! I noticed about the same with my car at the track. It went 12.7 right off the road with no cool down, 85 degree temp, and 12.4 at night with around 68 degree temps..
Yeah, thanks, I never knew this. I was just a weekend street racer back when Philly had lots of empty roads (on weekends). But like you said the north doesn't have a long summer. Atco or Englishtown in the spring and fall was the place to be but in July and August the beach/ swimming pool was the better choice. Man that is a nice mustang, I will need to look thru your video catalog and find the episode about this Mustang. Thanks for the education!

This is where a stock air box or a fully enclosed one really matters. If your IAT'S suck on the rip your 60ft-1/8th mile sucks and kills the run. Your mph is only down 2mph but because the IAT'S suck so bad on the dig and its not able to make power there the ET is suffering by around 4 tenths.

Good video. I race up in Norwalk OH. On a Weds night we might start time trials at about 6. By the time eliminations start around 8 the DA often goes down a lot. Makes it difficult to establish a dial in time when bracket racing.

Good video. I've been aware of this for a while. Learned it at a car show. A 64 Malibu, with boost, only made in the 970's rwhp. The previous year, it made in the 1030's. The 970's year it was mid to upper 90's for air temps compared to the previous year of temps in the low 80's. Car chassis dyno, so how well it was calibrated is unknown.
Proving again that nobody else on this platform is doing it better and offering more information than you. Keep it up

This is why when we fly on a hot day we have to be super cognizant of our density altitude. One day you can clear trees with no problem loaded up and the next day you would fly right into them with the same load. The engines make way less power on hot days and the air density of so much thinner. The wing physically doesn’t have as much air to create the same amount of lift so your ground speed has to go up to get the same wing loading and get the airplane flying and performing as it would on a cool day. Another thing on hot days same as airplanes and cars airplanes cannot pull timing like a car can so if you’re not careful you’ll get detonation and that can cause big problems very quickly and that’s another reason why Airplanes run 100 octane fuel. Even though most aircraft engines are extremely low compression and things can get so hot on a hot day. Detonation will still occur in. The timing is always extremely conservative on those engines.

And yes, the air will affect a 70 hp Honda just the same. But it's almost impossible to tell the diff between 0.19 and 0.2 g of acceleration...

I experienced this first hand.. went from my local track with good weather and DA to a track in Washington state.. 90° and 5000 DA. Lost half a second and almost 6mph in the 1/8
have you ever done a log showing timing vs cylinder head temp? I would love to see a video that shows timing based on different temperature ranges
Thats why you need a massive oversized radiator and biggest tranny cooler you can find and high efficiency fans pulling tons of air, and oversized intercooler, and low temp T-Stat and e85 and you're GOLDEN.

I’m stuck in south Mississippi so it’s always 95+ here. But at least we are around sea level and not a mile high.
Nhra records were set in Dallas back in the 90’s because they were run late Oct-into November.
Then they were reset in Houston in the early spring. Why??? Air was best at Ennis when they ran there then again here at HRP. Summer time I saw ET’s go up a half second…not much oxygen in the air in summer around here…thank you for the video…
Alex, you should do a video explaining how a "Cold air intake" pulls in more air due to the conical filter shape. So many "Car guys" in my area see a "Cold air intake" on customers cars or at car shows and say "Nice hot air intake". Some of these people seriously think that if there ECT is 200° then their IAT will also be 200°. Alot of people dont understand, how any of that works, mostly because they never actually watched live data, they just want to act like they know something that somebody else doesnt.
This is all soo true.. My absolute favorite time to bring my car out is when it's 55 degrees' outside and a fresh tank of 93.. There's been times where my car surprised me and felt savage and then other times when it just feels normal.. And the average person doesn't understand it.. Anyway a friend of mine who lives down in Florida has a 2022 turbo chevy trailblazer and it went into limp mode down there on Saturday.. He called me up scared saying (low power mode) popped up on his dash.. So right away I start googling and I find a service bulletin saying the ECU needs to be flashed and updated.. I am betting because they jam the cats in so close to the motor's now that cat over temp is kicking in.. But anyway yeah it's disgusting hot in south Jersey so I know it's way worse down there..

Short and to the point. How many videos have we seen about DA and IAT that drone on and on. If you’re serious about DA you look at aviation. Their lives literally depend on it. Lots of info there.

Cold air is denser and more oxygen. Hot air thinner and with humidity way less oxygen. Less oxygen less power. More oxygen more power.
Those 11-14's are going to be the sought after like Foxes years from now, they already kind of are which is scary.

Just moved to El Paso now my car feels so much slower IAT’s are always over 110 and the altitude on top of it makes it so much slower

Will a thermostat help combat some of this? Run the engine cooler. Moved from CT to Fort Lauderdale and detenerlo feel it weeks like this. I know just taking it in cooler weather will help but I wonder if there is stuff you can do to fight it.

Th400 only way to go Alex. I like manuals but no comparison to a big stalled th400. Big stalled th400 is drag racing legend.
No comparison in what? Straight drag racing at the drag strip? Sure. On the street a manual blows it away on driveability and fun factor and it won't be much behind on performance if you can actually drive like Alex can.
@@midnight347Completely false. I have a 68 Mustang with full manual th400 and another with a stick, and the th400 blows it away off the line. Not even fcking close no matter how fast you shift.
Is there any normalized rule for how altitude effects performance numbers?
Every 1000-1500 da difference is prob 1 or so tenths in the quarter. Difference between -1000 da and like +8000 in Colorado would be like a second easily if not more. 3000-4000 da could change things almost half a second probably. Also some tracks like the one I race at are uphill the majority of the track you can actually see it looking at it and I confirmed it with my draggy when I made a pass. The last 3/4 of the track is uphill it kills our mph.
And you’ll still have people blaming the tuner for the lack of performance in hot weather lol great video Alex

aside from instant torque, no oil changes, fuel up at home and amazing traction control etc... high outside temps and shitty da is probably the best thing about EV's lol. Ah I know but just saying. I love when it gets winter temp for best runs.

them cylinder head temps wayyy too hot, remove coolant and add distilled water, mines are around 198, when i finish doing a pull i get around 205F from a 60-130 pull

Great video although you could have gone a step further I think when discussing weather effects on performance. There are always tradeoffs. Hot weather = less power but more grip. Depending on your car's setup, surface conditions, drag vs road course etc, every car will have a different optimal performance weather conditions. This is why it irritates me to no end how people compare 'lap times' like Car and Driver Lightning lap or magazine quoted 1/4 mile times. They are totally meaningless numbers when you realize that every car tested is on different tires, different weather, different driver, different track conditions. Just because C&D says your Mustang can run 12.xx doesn't mean it will when YOU drive it.
I can only imagine as a tuner how annoying it must be having people go to the track in the Spring get a solid time stock, then in Summer load up your tune when it's hotter and then complain "the tune made my car slower".

This mostly stock auto car isn't gonna have too many traction issues with a decent tire lol.
This is the first time I realized a 6R80 Gen 1 N.A. without crazy mods can run 4.6 0-60 on the street. Wild.
Why is that unbelievable? They were supposed to go 4.4 stock with a stick if not 4.3 in perfect air etc. A tuned auto on e85 can easily do numbers like that I feel like some people don't realize these are closer in performance to the new cars than you think there is more to it than just hp rating these cars are lighter and launch way better with a solid axle...4.6 is a super easy achievable 0-60 time in a light modded 6r you can go quicker than that easy.

So the next gear will drop to a higher rpm and be in the meat of the power band.
This current set up is an 18 manifold. They (18 manifold’s) breathe better at higher RPM’s. Couple that with a PMAS and stock cams, the GEN-1 performs effortlessly.
How would meth injection help on a n/a set up?

Alex has big stalled th400 in his gt500. At 1400wheel it must be 8sec car. No idea how he hooks cause my 850wheel 15psi e85 built boss motor vmp gen3r with fat mickeys out back doesn't hook for shit on street and its set up for drag racing and motor spins to 7800rpm and its fcking scary man. 1400wheel on street is suicide.
