    Greg heads up! On your forms for the footers take your hammer and tap the sides top to the bottom when you pour wet concrete and will get read of honey comm in the concrete while it's still wet and levels out as well . Just a tip from an old concrete man...

      Another way to eliminate honey comb is use your used motor oil to coat the inside of the form before you or the wet concrete

    It’s the one in 50 year fall of snow that’s the worry. Ask yourself, do you want to be awake at night worrying or sleep tight knowing you did a solid job? (… and yes, Australia does not get snow like Canada but we DO get snow loads in what we humorously call our alps!)
    2x8’s at least. In these times of global warming the average snow loading will probably decrease but the occasional peak loading will probably INCREASE! Love you guys! 🇦🇺 🦘🌏

    You're doing the right thing Greg as always anybody that lives in Canada or BC Canada knows that we don't get as much snow as we used to yet weather's changes here on Vancouver Island and Courtney we used to get a lot of snow I remember as a kid we always walked down town on the probably 8 foot of snow piled up in the middle of the road you don't see that anymore you may see two 3 inches here in Courtney and in 19 79 or 1980 was there last biggest snowfall I can remember my dad bought a brand new 1979 Ford and when you looked at it just like look like a couple bumps in the snow that's how much the snow was and when you that pushed snow off the roof we couldn't see out our front when you opened the door front door you couldn't see out the front door I so much snow we used to get here you don't see that anymore we used to build snow forts like crazy just from the snow that they used to plow down the road make tunnels into it you don't see any of that stuff anymore last year I think we may have got like one inches snow two inches of snow gone in a couple of days so I didn't even shovel it because I knew it would be gone❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

    Hey Greg, now that you are getting the hang of working with heavy beams try notching the beams where the gussets attach to add more strength. I have no doubt you could figure it out and once you do it's a game changer. The next step from there is to learn mortise and tenon.

    Hi Katie and Greg, it was sure nice being able to spend some time with you today. As usual, I enjoyed very much the random scenes with the animals at the start. I love the goats. I appreciate all the time and effort it takes for you to shoot, edit and produce these vids and really appreciate it. Thank you for putting in the effort with your editing Katie. I'm with Greg and would love to spend the day milling, especially with all the beautiful surroundings to enjoy and admire. I enjoyed watching Juniper and Aspen playing in that scene, they were having so much fun; like a couple of kids playing 😄 I am also ambidextrous Katie. I am old enough that they didn't have anything like left handed scissors etc back then and there didn't seem to be many left handed people in my world at least. So I had to learn how to do everything right handed and then adapt to left. I write left handed, use tools with either hand equally well, as well as shoot, bat etc. Greg, you made the comment about almost being 40, just give it another 35 years 😉 You got quite a bit accomplished and I look forward to the next vid. Have a productive week and be safe out there. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

    One trick for setting foundation pours better is to use a Sawzall without a blade as a vibrator tool to settle the concrete. And to answer your question, yes you did mix the concrete dry. You just need to read the bag ratio information.
    CAUTION: Since the ends of the posts are the open end of the grain you really need to seal the ends up. At the very least get some silicone caulk and spread it over the ends. I have used Zip tape as well in a pinch. There is also the potential for using scorching of the ends to seal them up...Lots of options and all will be an improvement.

  • @duncangough9969
    @duncangough9969 Před 13 dny

    You should always tap the side of the form to make sure there are no bubbles and voids. You can also use a reciprocating saw (Sawsall) without a blade to vibrate it the bubbles out when you pour. Never just pack it in and leave it.

    Use a SPAN TABLE to figure out what dimension of lumber to use when spanning a distance. It's based on several factors including what you are spanning (floor joist, ceiling joist, rafter, etc) and type of lumber (a critical factor) and other things. Use a Span Table for your area. You should be able to find one online. Just know this, the MAIN strength is in the height of the lumber, but of course the thickness and length of span are very important too.

    2x6 are pretty substantial for roofing....especially if you are using full dimension. The old building is a good guide to what you should use.......if you get an exceptionally heavy load, you can always brace with vertical posts during those heavy load snow events.

  • @friendintzand
    @friendintzand Před 13 dny +1

    Greg, next time use as a bush solution, your reciprocating saw and let the body slightly vibrate the formwork. That will help compacting. Other tip: do not use osb board for formwork, the concrete sticks to it. You can make it from osb, but line it with some plastic. Also a bush solution

  • @JLC24
    @JLC24 Před 13 dny +1

    Greg, your a beast, and Katie a beauty, when your doing laminated beams ensure you use a water proof glue and lots of it to double the strength of the beam. That is why plywood and osb has over 100 years of success, cause it makes a bond that doubles or triples the strength 😊

    @GeekBatman Před 14 dny +3

    I might be wrong, but I believe you're planning on changing the overall layout by adding to the structure. If that is the case please consider this.
    It's not just snow load as such that you need to worry about. Depending on the final shape of your roof/building you might need to worry about snow drift.
    So rather than a typical angle of repose that would make the snow slide off the roof, the snow is able to pile up larger than it normally would. And therefore more weight.

My concern is that with bit of wind uplift the entire barn could come of it's footings. Also agree with all the comments about putting a damp proof membrane under the posts to protect them from damp. Not too late to do it. Just jack them up and slide the material under.

    If your are happy to reproduce what has been there for many years that should be fine. Don’t shrimp on the fixings, nuts and bolt and screws as the braces you use carry the loads from the roof into the posts then into the ground. So one poorly fixed brace or joints can cause not only snow overload but wind gust overloads. Good luck and don’t worry if you over engineer the braces!

    You can use a sawzall as a vibrator if you put the shoe up against the concrete form without a blade in it and pull the trigger.
    Also, if the mix was a little wetter it would settle better.

    Greg, you need to put an electric fence . This would keep coyotes out and protect your animals!

    5:01 I look at the darndest things when I watch CZcams videos and all I can think about is his left boot is going to fill up with sawdust, and how nice must be to finally have forks. I know you've had them for a little bit, but I watched the struggle for the first few years when you guys were stacking lumber on the bucket.

    Hi guys! As far as the fence, do you have any wolves there, could be that. It's funny that Katie brought up the swinging with both hands thing. I noticed her switch hitting with the hammer in several videos and when I seen her doing it again today she popped up in the video talking about it. Lol. Barn/shop is looking good!

    Its so nice to be able to take a log from your land and cut into lumber then build something. Another project you 2 should be proud of.

    Go 2x8 - it’s the span that you are building structure for. It’s like painting, you only want to do it about every five years. That calls for top quality paint.
    For the roof, you don’t want a structure failure. And for the cost to you is peanuts between 2x6 and 2x8. If. You ever have a structure failure, it’s not just the building, but what’s underneath the structure that gets demolished. The other consideration is using the primary structure for add-ons.
    It’s a toss of the dice, but if it as me, it would be a no-brainer (2x8).
    Good luck either way then Greg and Katie. 😊

    I would suggest some carriage bolts for your laminated beam, just a precaution and you can install them anytime.

    Wood post in direct contact with concrete WILL rot! You can still jack the post up enough to slide a piece of asphalt shingle under the contact point. A asphalt shingle is thicker and more durable than tar paper. Put the grit side on the concrete and the tar side to the post. Using an asphalt shingle tab, cut a slit to the center and make a 1/2 inch hole to clear your rebar, then wiggle it in under your post.

    Katie, I’m also ambidextrous, if I have trouble doing something with one hand, I just switch to the other, no problem. It drives my family nuts 😂 I really do enjoying the animals, the home build, thank you for allowing us all to watch and cheer you on!

      Katie- you are a true gem. How about some Leftie power to all of us left handed writers, who can do so much with our right hands also! We are the ones in our right minds 😅

    Also a Purlin brace cuts the span in half! See diagrams in the rafter-span-table link.

    So glad to hear from you. I saw on American news that British Columbia was on fire. Not worried about smoke but was concerned about the massive evacuation going on up there. Looks like your doing fine!!!
