Did McDonald's Go Too Far?

- The Big Mac has been an iconic sandwich on the McDonald's Menu since the beginning of time - but starting on January 24th, McDonald's has now released the Double Big Mac; featuring TWICE the amount of beef patties. Many are saying that McDonald's has gone too far and is including too much of a good thing, but I'll be taking a look and getting to the bottom of this in today's review!

😢 I live next door to a McDonalds and I wish they close. 🍔are horrible. Even my 🐶won't even sniff at them. I won't even timestamp the closeup 🍔🤮
@@robertcuratolo5339 yo, but you still like a burger. Horror. Tell ya a cheeky secret. Horseradish sauce (teaspoon) and mustard/sauce (2teaspoon) you can add a little tomato sauce to carm it down. But trust me.
I kind of feel that the "Double Big Mac" is attempting to fix a problem they deny exists. For anyone that was around when the Big Mac first came out, it was much bigger than the standard Big Mac we have today. So the "Double Big Mac" gives you back what you had years ago but charges more for it. Personally I'd just get a Quarter Pounder or Double Quarter Pounder and have them add Mac Sauce to it. You'll get a better tasting burger (as it is the only fresh made patties they make) than the Big Mac and it will be more worth your money.
you are so right about the size of the patties. wafer-thin shavings of "beef" with a ton of salt and pepper to mask the blandness does not a Big Mac make.
So True
Why bother? Just go to Carl's Jr/Hardees where they already make what you are describing. :)
Never considered this as I have stepped away from McDonald's, except for their lattes and mcmuffins. Gonna try out your idea.
The last time I went to McDonald's (8 months ago) the patties on the big Mac were so thin I could barely see and taste them. This double option is just them cashing out on shrinkflation.
The fact the signature sandwich of McDonald's doesn't use quarter pound patties regularly is a shame.
The fact that the big mac is still their flagship sandwhich despite all the counter intuitive marketing is incredible.
dude seriously. how did they not upgrade to that instead of adding 2 more of these weakass patties
I've been getting my local McDonald's to make me the qp big Mac for years. Extra special sauce obviously. If I'm somewhere that won't oblige me, I just hack it. I won't be stopped!!!
I haven't had a Big Mac in practically forever for this reason. I get that some people like the Big Mac the way it is, but those people are from Mars.
@@thomaskeys180these ultrathin patties are no doubt cheaper than the QP's for McDonalds. With the quarter pounders they have to cook them to order which can slow the line down.
McDonald's did not go too far. They did not go far enough
Fact of the Week: the middle bun is called the "club." The bottom is called the "heel" and the top is called the "crown."

1/4 pound fish sandwich and siracha curds with a root beer at A and W was 13 buck plus today. All fast food is getting stupid.
If you think theyre just raising prices just to raise prices you havent been paying attention.
They still have some good cheap options. Where I live I can get 2 McDoubles for $4. In today's world that ain't bad.
@@Boudica234This can't be true. A single McDouble is $4 here. Two of them is like $11 with tax
They need to put cheese in between both sets of patties, it will act like glue and help hold the burger together.
Genius! will that work my vase too?
Yup. I tried one and it was messy. The 2 top patties kept slipping off.
Crazy that a double cheeseburger has 2 slices but big Mac and double big Mac only has 1
Why not just use glue?
@@imlurking232 is that not what American cheese is?
I remember when I was a little kid when the Big Mac first came out they had a white card-board sleeve wrapped around the Big Mac to hold it all together and it would sit in the card-board container.

It's good that you addressed the logistical problems involved in taking a bite of a Double Big Mac without creating some messy "collateral damage" in the process, meaning squeezing the Secret Sauce and various other stuff out the sides and creating spillage! This can indeed be a challenge for most of us. Mick Jagger, who has an astonishing ability to open his mouth very wide, can probably get the entire sandwich in his jaws without spilling a drop of it. But most of us don't have that ability. Therefore, caution is advised! Thank you for another excellent review, done in a tasteful and dignified manner, as always.
I think Tony Robbins could eat a Big Mac in one huge bite.
@@smackedinthejaw - Yes, he could!
But the sauce is supposed to fall out, so that you can dip your fries in it!

Fish has 1/3 a slice !! They are pathetic
Yeah I think the regular big Mac should come with 2 cheese slices but for them not to put 2 on this bad boy is insane!!
I don't understand why they didn't just use two quarter pound patties on the double instead of using four flimsy patties that will slide all over?
Because then it wouldn't be a big mac since it's not using big mac patties
Considering that they’ve made enough money to sustain themselves ten lifetimes over, maybe they just don’t care because they know you’ll eat it anyway and be back for more because of your sodium addiction as a result of eating McDonald’s.
I've heard many people say they do this and its really good, plus they cook the quarter pounder patties made-to-order

Review Brah referring to the secret sauce as "thousand island dressing" killed me. lol
🤷🏾♂️ That's what it is. I thought everyone knew this.
@Sorrowdusk It's not. It's similar, but it's not thousand island. Thousand island has ketchup for instance, and there's no tomatoes in mac sauce.
Real thousand island dressing does not have ketchup in it. Walmart brand may but a decent brand does not
@mkendall8393 Yes it will. It'll be ketchup or tomato puree. I mean that's straight outta wikipedia

I've only made it to 6:31 in the video, so please forgive me if this has been addressed. But this Big Mac Daddy costs $8 in my city. The same McDonald's sells the normal Big Macs for 2 for $5. You get more food by just buying two regular Big Macs, and you save $3.
This. And better yet, buy two double cheeseburgers. If you use the app, one of those will be $1.
It's just extra money for bread filler in a mcdouble anyways.
Still you're paying 5-8dollars for 10 cents worth of food.
I bought a Big Mac for $1 in the app last night
The Double Big Mac has existed in Canada a very long time, over 20 years.
Same in Australia. It's been available for years
yes sir it has.
It’s been seen on and off in the UK for many years now as well
It’s existed here in the States for as long as I’ve been alive which is 54 years

I distinctly remember 1, 2, or 3 patties per layer always being a customization option on the digital menus. So, this is just them taking one menu item configuration, setting it as a separate default, and pretending it's a different item.
In Alaska we have the Denali Mac which is a Big Mac with quarter pounder patties.
Probably the biggest thing I find myself missing from AK is the Denali Mac (formerly the McKinley Mac). When ordering through the various apps, the closest I can get is adding an extra patty + extra mac sauce.
Damn i need to move back
Every McDonald's employee has created that specialty for their lunch break
How much are you paying for that?

The real question is: When HASN'T McDonald's gone too far?
Right lol the creator stole ideas to even get McDonald's to where it's at now.
real
the food prices are too far
McDonald’s gets a 60% profit after everything I think, (which is somehow normal for companies) while LEGO gets 20% profit and they’re already expensive.
The Shamrock Shake was a bridge too far for me. Those were horrid.

Fun fact: a Big Mac has less meat than a Quarter Pounder despite having double the number of patties. The patties are only 1/10th of a pound.
Small point 4 x .10 = .4, which is actually larger than .25. On the other hand McDonalds "meat" is probably left on the dog.
True fact: Ever since COVID began, patty size has been get smaller coupled with the price for the sandwich going up. McDonald could have gone a number of different ways to market the sandwich with more meat. They could have brought back the original patty size and called the sandwich Retro Mac, but they choose to double the current patty portion and call it appropriately Double Big Mac and raise the price again. Three companies in the US are masters at marketing and making people pay more for less (or the same features): Intel, McDonald's, and Microsoft.

The patties are about a quarter the size of a regular hamburger patty as it is so basically they’ve finally came up with this great innovation of having a burger with an average amount of hamburger meat on it
McDonald's hamburger patties and the ones they put on the Big Mac are the same.
@@meziahdanieljolley8842 They are 1.6oz patties which are ridiculously small for a burger. 2 of them combined is still 0.8oz short of a 1/4lb patty.
You know what I wish? I wish they would bring back the mcRib for an extremely limited time, say 11 hours and 24 minutes or so and take off the rib sauce, pickles and slivered onions and substitute Mac sauce, dehydrated onions, and fried jalapeños, and get rid of the long bun and substitute a poppyseed roll and serve it all in a miniature cardboard trashcan. I wish I may. I wish I might have diarrhea and constipation all in one night. The end.
I remember meeting you at a Tavern in Rhode Island back in 1888. What a lovely fellow.
This was done before in the 90s. I was working for them at the time. They doubled the meat and called it the Monster Mac. They also had the double fish filet too.
Norway had the "Grand Big Mac" some years ago. The whole burger was scaled up. Still two patties but they were bigger, bread was bigger, more sauce and more lettuce. It was perfect.
McDonald's in the US did that several years ago as well - I want to say in 2018? I don't know why they didn't just bring that back.
USA had that too, there was a brief period when we actually had 3, the grand mac, big mac, and one that had no middle bun and only one patty(forget what they called it). These types of "specials" are lame because they're all just things you can ask for anyways. It's not a "new" item
I remember the Grand Mac. It left such a great impression on me. It was perfect. But I can see why it was a limited item, the calories on it was insane.
I would rather have that the the double.
We had that here in Canada and it was great. I'm pretty sure they used 2 quarter pounder patties. Best thing at MacDonald's in quite a while.
With the recent buy one, get one for a dollar is two whole big macs for around $2 less than this marketing ploy
the extra bun is stupid .........................
A McDonald’s review, and a Nagel… pure retro from Reviewbrah. Love it.
Funny thing is in the U.K. the double Big Mac is pretty common limited time item so to me this is like the strangest thing for mc Donald’s to hype up
Also because wherever you are in the world, they'll add as many patties as you want if you just ask/check the mark in the kiosk. You can have a quadruple Big Mac anytime you want. With bacon.
This. In Finland they circle around with a Grand Big Mac, a Double Big Mac and a chicken big mac
Same in germany
It’s a regular menu item in Canada

It's 11.99 in Michigan. A burger meal from Applebee's is 10.99 😂😂
I pay that much for the big Mac pack, 2 big macs, two 10 piece nug and two medium fry and I thought that was expensive
It was $16 here in SC.
I stopped going to mcdonalds they’re doing too much with those prices, almost $10 for a big mac that fills you up like a small bag of chips
Would you like to double the beef for an extra $5?
I like extra pickles on the Big Mac. For those commenting that the patties have shrunk over time, I don't think so. When I made them in the early 1980s each patty was 1/10 pound, same as the patties used on the Double Cheeseburger. I'm pretty sure the patties are still 1/10 pound. People may think the patties have shrunk because other burgers have gotten bigger over the decades, just like the size of fries and drinks have gotten bigger, to satisfy the more gluttonous Americans of today. (We used to toast the buns--they don't do that anymore.)
I was waiting to see if you commented on the saltiness of the patties. If I were to get it again I would ask for no salt shaken on the patties.
No, this is perfection. But I always chuckled at this Hamburger being called big. It’s smaller than a double whopper from BK. I like BK over McDonald’s but this isn’t bad at all
This is probably now the size of the original Big Mac. The Big Mac of today is smaller then it used to be originally. 😮
Quality went down the tube as well, if we’re being 100% honest. I hardly eat at McDonald’s anymore, they have gone way downhill
Back in the early 2000’s at certain locations some McDonald’s allowed Customers to customize certain hamburgers, and the big Mac was one of them. My little brother used to order two extra patties every time he got a big Mac. But some time after 2013 most McDonald’s won’t allow you to add two extra patties, but only one extra.
Burger King back in the early 2000s also used to have a four patty hamburger which they discontinued after three years. I used to order that back in my early 20s. I miss the days of the Wednesday $.39 cheeseburgers. I missed the $.99 menu.
The legendary review brah blessed us again 😂

McDonalds should bring back the mini mac. Sometimes you want the flavor of a big mac without all the regular big mac calories. I suggested to McDonalds a quarter pounder Big Mac version idea, they weren't interested. Imagine a quarter pounder with big mac ingredients and no middle bun. I'd love that!
Just get mac sauce on a mcdouble or something
Just add big mac sauce to a mcdouble or quarter pounder
Why can't McDonald's just put it on the menu as quarter pounder with cheese traditional or big mac dressed?
I used to ask for them to sub the Big Mac patties out for quarter pound patties. I like the middle bun tho so it was perfect that way
Just eat half a big Mac bro
When I was a kid there was an ad campaign on tv that had the ingredient jingle. If you could recite the jingle at the drive thru or counter you got the Big Mac for free. I memorized it and got a daily Big Mac for the month the promotion was active. To this day I remember the jingle. Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun.

You know what was a game changer for me is ordering a double quarter pounder, plain, with cheese and “Mac sauce” the Big Mac here in Cali is still cooked with some kind of flash steamer but the Quarter Pounder is being cooked differently to give it the grilled experience. Much, much better!
They're cooked the same. They hold the same... The only differences are the precooked weight of the patties and they started using not-frozen patties for the QPC.
I think it would have been better to bring back the Grand Mac......anyone remember that promotion several years ago? You had the Mac Jr, the original Big Mac and the Grand Mac. The Grand Mac had a total beef weight of 1/3lb along with bigger buns...made for a big burger. I see people complaining in the comments about 1/10lb beef patties.....so what? Total weight is 3.2oz of beef.....plenty for most people and they haven't shrunk either, they've been that size since the beginning of time. It's your perception that's changed. I remember as a kid, I could never finish the whole sandwich. I've seen the same nonsense posted about the whopper...."oh it's shrunk over the years!"....no it hasn't.....that's also a big burger and still a 1/4lb since the beginning of time.
Two patties on a Big Mac equals a normal patty. 4 patties equals 2 patties. Thank you for reading my mathematical explanation about burgers. Tomorrow, we’ll be explaining why Red Lobster uses one giant tomato for their burger.
In Canada the double bigmac has always been there, we even have the double quarter pounder
Oh thank God, I thought I was going insane trying to figure out when it left.
They've had a double quarter pounder in the states for decades.

Thank you as always for your entertaining review! Honestly, the double big mac is good but there is a MUCH better option and it's available year round. Get the double quarter pounder with cheese deluxe with no ketchup, mustard, or mayo and add mac sauce. Best burger there!
Good review! If I'm looking for a fast food big burger that taste amazing I'm going to Wawa. Their double burgers are a huge amount of beef and very delicious tasting every time. Such a great deal on a great tasting burger. Maybe you can do a video on one of them. I recommend the double bacon burger.

Appreciate the info your jaw span, great review bro!
It´s hilarious how they introduce that as a special. Here where I live in Germany, McDonalds started modernizing their restaurants a few years back so they introduced new "order stations" where you can order stuff on a big touch screen instead of ordering at the cash register thingy. Which is great for introverts like me. Anyways, they also added the option to "customize" your burger. Like ordering it without onions or with extra bacon. So I realized there was a mistake in the system, when ordering an extra patty on a Big Mac you wouldn´t get a single extra patty for 50 Cents like on a regular burger, they would give you 2 extra patties for 50 cents. So naturally I ordered my big mac with the max amount of 3 extra patties and extra cheese. So overall it was 8 Patties and 4 slices of cheese for around 5 Euros. Needless to say we feasted on that bad boy every other day until they fixed the issue. We dubbed the creation "the Heartstopper"
You know a lot of people poop and don't wash their hands then they touch those big touch screens ?! ... 😫
@@ronhobyak9902 Don´t make a fuss. A bit of Vitamin Koli never hurt anyone. Just kidding, hand sanitizer is a nice thing. And also between ordering and actually recieving the stuff is enough time to go wash your hands :P
I think you just hacked your way in to American citizenship.
better name “Clear” (what the paramedics say before energizing the paddles) 😳
I'm pretty sure the secret sauce is thousand island dressing. That consists of ketchup and mayonnaise with some relish. I discovered it when I was a kid in the late eighties early nineties.
Not When no ones looking! It's mayo splooged into ketchup

@@AMPProfpretty much. It's definitely not what it used to be over 30 years ago. The Nuggets were way better back then. Now they taste artificial.
The mcdonald's in Alaska have a Denali big Mac and they use quarter pounder patties instead of the smaller patties
Believe it or not the "double big mac" is a standard menu item in Canada and has been for as long as I can remember.
Liar
Yeah, it’s been around for years. It also has more cheese, and so much lettuce in falls everywhere as you eat it. Also that amount of sauce is criminal.
Edit: the Grand Mac was around for a while too.
They should call this a "Bigger Mac" and have a 4-patty version called "Biggest Mac".
its just the same its in 1980
but what if i only want 3 patties on each half?
They needed to increase the scale, not change the ratios. This is apparent in the Grand Big Mac, found for limited runs in Europe - that should in fact be a regular menu item.
I'm not seeing prices on their website.
So expensive now they don't show prices online?
