IN 2006 Blue October released their fourth studio album. Foiled. A few years earlier the band started to breakthrough with the song, Calling you from their album Consent to Treatment. , It peaked at #35 on Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks and had a resurgence a short time after that as it was part of the American Wedding Soundtrack.
Blue October had grown their audience from the ground floor since forming in Texas in 1995. As they developed as a band, they were later signed by Universal records in 1999. Much like how the music of Joy Division, the Cure and the Smiths would speak to the downtrodden misfits and outcasts of the world.
Blue October’s music played a similar role for those coming of age in the rock 2000s. The band gave hope to the hopeless, as lead singer Justin Furstenfeld wrote directly from his pain, no holds barred, no filter. This struck a chord on a major scale with the first single from Foiled, titled Hate Me.
The song would break through on the american charts going to #2 on the alternative airplay charts, kept out of #1 by Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Dani California. It also crossed over to the pop charts hitting #31 on the hot 100. I also crossed over the mainstream Rock charts at #21 and the adult top 40 at #13.
The song was further enriched by a brutally honest music video directed by Kevin Kerslake who’s directed music videos by everyone from Prince to the Rolling Stones, REM, Depeche Mode, Nirvana , The Smashing pumpkins and so many more. His recent documentary on Joan Jett is well worth seeing. Kerslake tapped into a tragic realism that cut to the bone.
Which matched Justin’s heart renching music and lyrics to create a mesmerizing portrayal of sound and vision. The music of Blue October is well worth a listen especially, Any Man IN America that features a song that has seen me through many a dark nights The Feel Again Stay, also check out Sway and Home.

So, I'm an older guy and was never familiar with Blue October until a couple of years ago. My then 19 year old daughter came to me and her mother and said "hey, I want to go on tour with a rock band". She is a photographer and was going to tour with the band she had been working with as their photographer/merch girl/tour manager/band mom. After my initial "oh hell no!!", she and her mom managed to talk me into oking it. The band she was with was opening on tour for Blue October! She went and had an amazing experience and got to know Justin and his band pretty well. Of course we got to hear a lot of great stories and the one thing that struck me, was the kindness and decency that they treated her with. While she is a strong, independent person, she was also a young girl starting out in a crazy business. I am grateful for the way they took to my daughter and helped build her confidence and self worth. They are good guys and I will always be glad that she went and met them! I'd love to meet Justin one day and shake his hand. Not for his music, but for his decency as a person.

Usually at most of their shows they have a meet and greet (for an added fee). I've met him (and the band) a few times. He also does this sometimes on his "Open Book" tours. So, keep an eye out for the next date in your city and go shake his hand.

@@Cata_777 You're welcome. My favorite story happened a couple of months after the tour. Justin was doing acoustic sets and she went to see one in Waco. She took her college friend and her friend's dad, both huge Blue October fans. Neither believed that she really knew Justin. They got there early and decided to grab a bite at a pizza place next door to the venue. They walked in and who's sitting there? Justin and his band. They see my daughter and shout "Boo" (that's what they called her on tour"). They gave her big hugs and made a big deal over her. Her friend and her dad's jaws dropped to the floor. They asked if she was shooting the show, she told them no, because she didn't have a photo pass. They took her (and her friend and her dad) back to their bus and got her one. Needless to say, she earned major coolness points...lol.

I've had several interactions with Matt Noveskey, Blue October's bassist. He was the manager of the band IAmDynamite, and we had them play a house show for us in Torrance, California. Since then, he's sent video birthday greetings with the entire band, and is such a great person. They are an important band and have helped so many people. Cheers, mate.

I was his runner once. I drove him around, and we talked a lot. Chit-chat mostly, but there were a could moments of his beautiful vulnerability and strength. When i got the call to work, they told me i would be running for Blue Oyster Clut. And once i got there, i didn't know exactly who Blue October was by name. And Justin was just so full of life teasing and hugging his tour bus driver. He was working on a perfume line, because he told me once he got sober, he realized he was so high all the time that he forgot how to smell and how beautiful it was to smell again. I remember being back stage and hearing Hate Me, and realizing that is who I've been hanging out with all day! I got badass videos of the show back stage. Justin deserves is every bit as awesome back stage as he is on stage. Thanks for showcasing how awesome Justin really is!

I immediately looked him up, found out his band’s name, and then watched the video for “Hate Me”. As a jaded punk rocker in my 30’s that used to be too pretentious to give popular music the time of day, I’m here to say that song changed my life instantly. It truly is great. 13 years ago, one of my bosses accidentally introduced me to Blue October. He had a monster download on a USB drive of music. First it was "You Make Me Smile" and I thought it was a Peter Gabriel song because of the tone of voice and the production mix. Then, there was "18th Floor Balcony."
Then, I got the album "Foiled" and "Hate Me" became my favorite. We all identify with the hurt that we have caused others. It kind of reminded me of the regretful tone of the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.
Anyway, bravo to Justin and friends for bringing us this heart-wrenching message.

I've been going to their concerts since the mid to late 2000 and I just saw them again on 10/10/23 and WOW what a beautiful difference he has made in his life. As much as I loved & related to the earlier & darker works, I have to say, I'm so loving this happy, goofy, effervescence glow he has about him now and it shows so much in these newer albums and shows. You leave just feeling happy. I wish him all the continued success and all the happiness life has to offer. The entire band & management, friends & family deserve the same for never having given up on him. Now if I can just get the money to see them again next year in Nashville cause they will be playing The Ryman. What a perfect venue for a perfect band.

Love this song, and the band! I never knew how much this song in particular had helped me 10 years ago, until just recently! Ive always loved it, and listened to it ( and teared up every damn time!) and thought about what I've put my Dad through growing up. Thank you Justin, and Prof!!!!!

Justin's song writing is 2nd to none. Hate me, Worry List, and many others just grab you by the feels. Whether you have lived similar experiences or not hearing justin live those moments through those songs time after time is god like abilties.

Yes! This band got me through a brutal divorce in the mid-aughts. My sis and I went to see Blue October in NYC. Phenomenal show! As an extra bonus , we got to go the venue afterparty with the band, and spoke to Justin. So amazing and down to earth. Ran into him again when leaving. He was coming down the stairs, garment bags slung over his shoulder walking to the tour bus. He smiled and said ‘Hey, it’s the ‘Trouble Sisters’ , we shared a laugh and wished him well. Unforgettable.❤️

We don't realize what we have until it's gone. In this case, it's the love of a mother. For others it could be the love of a good spouse, or a potential relationship.
Thank God for Blue October for being the beacon of light as we sail through the emotional seas of life.

This is what happened to me after my younger sister and my daughter who had been listening to them from day one. My sister always played them…I though oh not them again…then it happened …THE DAY MY LIFE CHANGED IN 20 minutes.
Saw them 2020 October in my home town Davenport, IA I walked out after the concert in a “what the heck just happened to me” feeling. My sister said I told you it was a spiritual event. She was not kidding. I don’t drink or do drugs but damn Justin touched my soul like no other. I’ve seen them at the House of Blues in Chicago 2022. And they’re coming to my little area again. Moline, Illinois 3.2.23. My brother in laws agent called their agent and 🎉 31 days until my what I call church will be here. I’m so in love with Spinning the truth around part one of 3.
Justin always stay grounded. When your fans we love you it might be the only love we’ve felt in decades!
If you ever get the chance to see them. Prepare for something bigger than words can say!
Thank you Professor of Rock for showing Justin’s venerable side. 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

My mom actually left me messages like that after I moved to Texas from Cali to get clean from Heroin. After I got clean, after I relapsed on some other dumb shit while living here, my mom got sick. A year later we found out it was ALS... For her funeral a Producer friend of mine helped me make a song of her voicemails to "Oh Mother" ( C. Aguilera). A year later I saw Blue October live at the Granada. I cried all the way through the set, I needed that time kinda alone among many to let go some of the pain. So thank you Justin for being so honest in your songs.

me n my homie discovered these guys in 2004, we were really into punk music, but thought that these guys were different. when foil came out, we thought for sure they were gonna blow up like rise against was. took them a while, but i think they got there, even if they arent quite as big. sadly my best friend passed away in 2007 on aug 27th. he was only 19, an was the hardest time of my life, we were brothers, an although they called it a heart attack due to being to hot in a hottub, it was without a doubt drug n alcohol induced. rough times man, 15yrs later, im dealing with my own addiction, quite fitting that i stumble across these guys agian, while going through hardest of times. intuition is a powerful force.

I like Ryan Delahousse and his violin. Reminds me of my other favorite band Kansas. Deep inspiring lyrics and good musicianship from both bands.
