J-20 Mighty Dragon vs F-22 Raptor - which would win?
Both aircraft are impressive feats of engineering and are designed to penetrate and dominate enemy’s airspace. They are equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, sensors and are armed with wide array of weaponry. Let’s take a closer look at these two engineering marvels, compare their capabilities and determine: Can China’s Mighty Dragon really outmatch the United States’ Raptor? The J-20’s wingspan is about 43ft and length is 70ft. China is thought to have between 150 to 208 J-20s in active service. The aircraft is powered by a pair of turbofan engines generating 66,000 pounds of thrust, which can push the aircraft to a top speed of Mach 2. The F-22 Raptor, on the other hand, has a wingspan of 45ft and a length of 62ft. So far, 195 Raptors have been built for the US airforce. The top speed of the aircraft is Mach 2.25, while it can super cruise at maximum speed of Mach 1.82. The latest variant of J-20 is fitted with domestically built WS-10 engines. Featuring 3D thrust vectoring nozzles, these engines enhance the aircraft’s maneuverability by a considerable margin. The J-20 is outfitted with canards for better maneuverability at high angels of attack or during a stall. Both aircraft have thrust to weight ratio greater than 1, which could be a decisive factor during a dogfight. For the mighty dragon to effectively take on F-22 Raptor, the domestically built engines must perform as claimed. The J-20’s design focuses on frontal aspect stealth, while the engine nozzles severely increase the aircraft’s RCS. However, the leading-edge root extensions and DSI intakes maximize the stealth capabilities. The exterior of the aircraft is coated with radar observant material. On the contrary, the U.S. have significant experience of designing & operating stealth aircraft for decades. The F-22’s RCS is estimated to be about 0.001 square feet. Both J-20 and F-22 are equipped with state of the art avionics and sensor suites that allow them to detect and track multiple targets at long ranges. The J-20 is equipped with domestically built Aesa radar, details of which are classified. The aircraft can detect stealth targets with the help of Distributed Aperture System. This sensor combines the radar input with IR image for better situational awareness. On the other hand, F-22 is mounted with APG-77 Aesa radar, which can detect a 11sqft target from 150mi, while in narrow beams it can even detect from 250mi. The bottom line is that F-22 avionics are so advance that it can even perform the role of a "mini-Awacs". The J-20 has three weapon bays. The main bay can carry 4 long range air-to-air missiles like PL-15 and PL-12. The PL-15 can engage targets from 186mi. The aircraft is outfitted with 4 external hardpoints. The J-20 is not armed with an internal autocannon. Chinese are experimenting to arm the mighty dragon with laser weapons and hypersonic missiles. Similarly, the Raptor has three weapon bays. The main bay is armed with 6 long-range missiles, while the side bays can accommodate short range air-to-air missiles. The primary missiles of the Raptor are Aim-120 and the Aim-9 Sidewinder, with planned integration of the Aim-260 with range up to 124mi. For detailed conclusion, watch the complete video.

air to air engagements are not a guarantee no matter what. In the right circumstances even a mig 21 can shoot down a f35. china is focusing on long range bvr and using awacs to guild those missiles while the f22 is made for more close encounters. it's all situational
This comparison is using J-20 interim WS-10 engine. WS-15 engine has 362kN engine thrust compared to F-22 312kN. J-20 has HMD which F-22 does not which means J-20 does not have to get behind it's foe in a dogfight to shoot it down.

@@Daily-Verified J20 ferry range is 5500km. Twentytwo is 3000km. Thirtyfive is 2200km.
J20's PL-15 missile estimated range of 300 km, PL-21 missile range is 400km+
Twentytwo/Thirtyfive AIM-120 missile range is 160km.
The J20 is already more maneuverable than the Thirtyfive and that is before it's upcoming thrust vectoring engine.
Thirtyfive does not meet it's own manufacturer's definition of a "5th gen fighter" as it cannot supercruise, is still grounded when there are thunderstorms, over 70% of replacement parts have to be sent back to suppliers and the stealth coating peels off and needs to be restored every few hours and less than 30% of them are mission capable.

China is continually building more J-20 fighters. Currently, it has 210+. China is aiming to build a fleet of 500 aircraft.
The F-22 discontinued production in 2011, so it's stuck with 195 aircraft.
The WS-15 engine is now available for the J-20. It will significantly enhance the J-20's capabilities and performance. The next several hundred J-20 fighters will have this engine!
Both China and America are continually improving the avionics. I wouldn't be surprised if the J-20 outperforms the F-22 in the future.

The J-20 has nothing....and I mean nothing....on the F-35. The upcoming block upgrade makes it even deadlier, stealthier and has an A.I Virtual pilot to aid the Human pilot, in tactical decisions, war planning, ground strikes, air combat contingencies and scenarios....etc etc etc.....Lockheed's A.I is unbelievable.

At the end you need a very good, experienced pilot, a good radar and a good air to air missile.
Most probably the F-22 pilot would win against a J-20 pilot due to experience. The PL-15 missiles are fairly good and it has longer range. However you can have the best missiles if you cannot radar lock the enemy fighter jet.

Nowadays American F22 and F35 can be shot down without any knowledge of coming Chinese J20’s long range missile because their radars and missiles are all out of date, compared with Chinese ones. Each battle situation is different so you have to be able to maneuver as appropriate. The f-22 sounds like it can do that and we have more time/sorties under our belt which i think gives us an important edge.
J20 has both longer range in fuel, A2A missiles PL15 , larger AESA radar that means can detect F22 first.
J20 electronics and communications with other planes plus an extra pilot will be the game Changer as the J20 will have other planes like j10c and J16 to support it while the J20 form the lead plane.
Anyway , no one will be sure until both engage.
F22 is suitable to Europe but not the SCS or Taiwan Straits as it is too short range.

2 things that will render the F22 a complete loser in any aerial encounter between F22 and J20. J20 is now equipped with twin-seat with the pilot in the back seat operating a fleet of UAVs. That latter while increasing the payload of any mission will target all high value airborne targets like AWACs. China has a long range air-to-air PL15 missiles up to 300 KM. And by 2030s, no one will even make the same comparison as the entire fleet of F22 will be phase out then.

F22 was designed for USSR and mean to be deployed in east Europe. The range is not enough and it can't change into a carrier aircraft so they have to be retired.

The F22 is designed for the Europe battle field. The J-20 is designed for the West Pacific battle field.The F22 is no longer in production. The J20 is still in production and upgrading. There is no doubt that F22 is invincible in its era and on its battlefield. But now it is aging.

Second, the F22 doesn't have room to add more sensors and other electronics. Third, the J20 can carry more powerful missiles than the F20 because the J20 has a larger missile bay.
The F22 made its maiden flight in 1997 and the J20 made it in 2010. The J20 has much better electronics like radar, flight computer and communication equipment.

Radar, both the AMRAAM D and the PL15 take data from the firing jet. The F22 can supply passive system data while the PL15 require a radar lock. Both switch on their own radar if data from the firing jet is lost. Generally both will turn their own systems on when they decide they are close enough and it will be too late for evasion at that point since both will have energy and maneuverability for high agility targets.
