- F-22 Raptor vs SU-57 - Which would win?
The raptor is optimized as a fast, high flying and stealth fighter jet. While the F-22 might be holding a better hand when it comes to stealth, the SU-57 has the edge in maneuverability due to its three-dimensional thrust vectoring engines.
1. Stealth
Stealth was a foundational feature of the F-22 as the plane’s design maximize sensor evasion with diamond shaped wings and sharp faceted surfaces...
In contrast the SU-57’s design places far less emphasis on all-aspect low observables. Instead, it focuses on frontal aspect stealth. This design philosophy gives the SU57 'PAC-Man' like signature. F-22's signature looks more like a spider...
2. Maneuverability
The F-22 Raptor is the most maneuverable fighter the U.S. has ever made. The Raptor uses two-dimensional vector-thrust jets which can only go up and down in unison...
On the other hand, SU-57 is even more maneuverable. The fighter uses 3-dimensional thrust vectoring jets. Its engine nozzles can literally tilt independently in any direction to assist it in executing impossible maneuvers...
Both aircraft are highly maneuverable. However, SU-57 advantage would be 3D thrust vectors giving it better performance in low axis. Whereas F-22’s 2D thrust vectors & larger control surfaces will give it better performance in pitch axis.
3. Performance
The F-22 is powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney afterburning turbofan engines that produces a total 70,000 pounds of thrust. The engines allow the Raptor to supercruise at Mach 1.82 without afterburners. With two external wing tanks, the F-22 can fly about 1,864mi. The raptor has top speed in excess of 1,726mph and the jet can perform combat operations within the radius of 528mi. Its service ceiling is around 65,000ft.
In contrast, Su-57 is powered by a pair of turbofan engines capable of generating 79,400 pounds of thrust. Unfortunately, the engines are undergoing difficulties and as a result the first batch of the aircraft will be powered by Su-35’s engines. The Su-57's aerodynamics and engines enable it to supercruise at Mach 1.6. With ferry range of 2,200mi, the top speed of the aircraft is 1,535mph. With service ceiling of 66,000ft, its effective range of operation is up to 930mi.
For the jet to effectively take on F-22, it would need the engines that maximize the design philosophies it was intended for...
4. Radar & Avionics
Both F-22 and SU-57 have active electronically scanned array radars which are stealthier, more resistant to jamming and boast higher fidelity...
In order to detect stealth jets, the SU-57 has modern infra-red search and track system with a 31mi of range. The raptor’s engines nozzles are designed to reduce heat signature, diminishing detection range...
Overall, the Raptor has a better avionics and radar systems because of superior computing technology. The Raptor will probably have an advantage in other areas as well, such as network enabled operations, data fusion and electronic warfare.
5. Firepower
The Raptor has three weapons bays. One of which can carry one Sidewinder missile. The second bay can accommodate 6 amraam missiles with a range up to 112mi...
On the other hand, the jet has 2 large internal weapons bays, taking up virtually the entire length of the aircraft. Each bay can carry up to 4 BVR radar-guided missiles with ranges in excess of 100mi...
Both planes carry long range radar-guided missiles of comparable effectiveness. SU57 has its cutting-edge K-77M missiles with a reported range of 120mi. While the United States has the amraam scorpion with a range in excess of 112miles. The bottom line is that both cutting-edge aircraft have advantages over each other and could come out victorious on any day. However, much will depend on the battle specifics than anything else.

In the end, it depends on situational awareness, strategy, and training. Mistakes kill. Loyal Wingman and Valkyrie drones, working in unison with stealth, and 4.5 gen fighters, should not be excluded either since they are part A.I. platforms and will give fighter pilots 6th gen capabilities.
For the most part I agree. But when a 1980s SU can hover around a decades newer 22 with ease(excluding tech), the 57 is going to have the upper hand.
We won’t know what the 57 is truly capable of for another couple decades. At which point we will purchase their engines. Just like we did for our inferior shuttle.
@@WontSeeReplies an 80's era fighter cannot out maneuver around an F-22. It is almost impossible. This includes all derivatives of the Su-27 family.
Reason:
A combat ready Su-27's/30's/34's/35's carries all its ordnances on its exterior, attached to it's wings and underbelly. Just empty fuel tanks alone create a tremendous amount of drag and change the overall performance parameters of said jet. When you add all that weight/resistance its not even the same fighter anymore.
The F-22 does not have this problem. This is one of the best advantages stealth fighters have over 4th gen platforms and why they'll win every time in a bvr or wvr 1v1 combat scenario.
Russian dogfight romantics typically love thrust vectoring. They think its mandatory if one is to consider itself a top tier fighter. What they fail to realize is that 3d thrust vectoring causes a lot of drag/low energy in rate fights. Evidence of this can be seen in dogfights between Malaysian and Singapore Airforces that fly both older legacy F-18's and newer Su-30's. At high altitude, the Sukhoi dominates. But at low to mid altitude the hornet stings mightily hard and gives the Su's all they can handle.
As for the Su-57 -- they have to enter service first. The US has produced 6 generations of stealth aircraft; Russia, none. This is their first venture into developing a new stealth platform all their own. Rule of thumb says it takes about 15 years to develop these technologies. A reasonable guess says it may take Russia longer all things considered. And by the time they figure it out, the US will already be flying new 6th gen stealth variants, which just recently they did. Although all the details are classified, it getting close to that time to replace the F-22, which btw is a 30 year old aircraft.
@@WontSeeReplies In your dreams maybe
I'm going with what tom Clancy said. "The Russian come out with a plane and or tank ever few years the west fears. Then they get ahold of one of them and they are pieces of crap with all kinds of problems or are at least far from as good as we thought.
@@FF-jf8yg have you ever wondered why every country with a modern military is doing everything they can to develop or obtain stealth fighters; including Russia? Understand, the US spent the better part of 2 decades exploiting Russia after the USSR collapsed. This meant that past, current, and future technologies were provided through collaboration, espionage, or by bidding. It hasn't been that long since Russias own citizens and former scientists sold her out (unfortunately, ppl have to eat). That said, there's nothing Russia really has that the US doesn't already know about. Unless they've had a technology boom within the last decade or so, I seriously doubt they have any edge over western powers.
As for what's the point -- stealth has more than proven its effectiveness flying into highly contested territories no 4 or 4.5 gen fighter could survive in. Just recently, Israel validated the effectiveness of their f-35s by flying them into Iran and taking pictures of perhaps the most heavily guarded nuclear tests facilities in the world (that were under Russian protection), the world took notice; they openly posted pictures as proof of the incident. Then there's missions they performed in Syria, a country that fully under the watchful eye of Russia. They flew in, and flew out unscathed and undetected. Both these incidents are more recent cases. What's more, stealth is not about being invisible to radar; no one ever made that argument. Stealth is about delaying detection, or seeing them before they see you i.e. first see, first kill. I wouldn't call that pointless. The russians certainly don't.
Still, missiles are one thing, but lasers are quite another. And no other country has invested more in laser research and technology than the US; there's not even a close second. Reagan's Star wars initiative only further boosted and accelerated prior r&d that provided a technology jump which is where we are today.
Battlefield player with a tank covered in c4: Oh this is going to be easy
One thing is for sure... They are both a beautiful jets
At the end of the day if these two jets were to engage in a dogfight, it would be the skills and decisions of the pilots that would decide the fight
/??????????
Not necessarily, the f-22 has superior computational power and radar systems, it could shoot down the enemy fighter before it even detects the F-22.
The age of the dogfights ended in ww2. Because of the technological advances, some may suggest that modern aerial combat is more a card game than it is a sniper duel. They would be shooting at each other without being in visual range.
That, and money. The richer nation can afford to launch 2 missiles per enemy plane. So the cards arent equal
@@BM1620 Agreed...and having better stealth capability is a big advantage in getting the jump on your opponent.

Nice run down. Felt like a show on discovery channel. 👍🏼
Remember it also can depend on exactly WHO IS FLYING THE PLANE because a fighter can be good but is only as good as the pilot behind the wheel or controls of the jet so might wanna see which country comes on top with not only the best fighter but also the best pilots as well (not saying either country has bad pilots or anything like that) because I have respect for both nations and all I'm really saying is let the best ace in the sky come out victories in the end.
Well, considering that the F-22 has been fielded in their dozens as part of the U.S. inventory for almost a decade, and the Su-57 is not yet part of ANY inventory, with the Kuznetzov TV powerplants designed for the airframe still technically on the drawing board and with Su-35 powerplants in their stead... I love both Jets..but I'll always be for the idea that pilot training makes all the difference. A jet will only respond to how much the pilot knows.
At the Red Flags exercise, Rookie pilots in F-35s who had just graduated flight school were able to dominate seasoned veterans flying 4th gen fighters, it does not matter how well a pilot can fly his plane if he's fighting an American 5th gen fighter.
@@Jab_Air Disagree, the pilot always makes the difference. Besides these are both same generation. Red Flag has a history of F-5's overwhelming F-14's when they were up close and mixing it.
@@seagriffon1016 pilots play a big role for sure, but the thing about 5th generation fighters that the US wields is just how lopsided an engagement with pretty much everything is. the SU-57 is a pathetic excuse for a stealth fighter, according to Sukhoi’s patent, it has an RCS of 0.1-0.01m^2, which is the same as a clean configured F/A-18 Super Hornet. It’s not hard to see why it lacks stealth, Russia just doesn’t have the budget to develop a proper stealth fighter. Unlike American stealth fighters, the SU-57 lacks S-duct intakes which hide the engine blades from Radar, instead the SU-57 utilizes radar blockers which are common on upgraded 4th gen platforms such as the Rafael, Eurofighter, F-15EX, and the F/A-18 Super Hornet, although they’re relatively effective at blocking the engine from Radar (no where close to the effectiveness of S-duct intakes), they do little to help cloak the IR signature of the engine. At the end of the day the F-22 is mathematically 1000 times stealthier than the SU-57, it has a RCS of 0.001-0.0001m^2 which translates to a detection distance 6 times smaller.
*there’s a very complex mathematical equation that calculates detection distances relative to RCS, a detection distance 6 times smaller for the F-22 was the number I found while doing research*
Assuming both the F-22 and SU-57 are equipped with the same radar (they most definitely are not), the F-22 will be able to see and engage the SU-57 long before it could do anything about it. This is ignoring the state of the art APG-81 radar equipped on the F-22 which has incredible LPI characteristics (Low Chance of Intercept). The F-22 radar has over 700 tiny modules which each send out and receive their own unique radar wave, the other thing is that the APG-81 randomizes each modules frequency, meaning it is near impossible if not extremely difficult to detect the radar on American stealth fighters, it also has the ability to paint an object with an RCS of 0.1m^2 at a distance of 250 miles compared to Russia’s current PESA radar which likely won’t be able to detect the F-22 until it is around 20 miles away (*extremely rough approximation*).
All of this is what takes the fight out of the pilots hands, it doesn’t matter how good of a pilot you are if your adversary can see you before you can see him.
@@Jab_Air Literally the Su-57 Work condition is if it had help from ground radars and sh*t. It is because of the Russian doctrine "Defense" They don't really need a stealth fighter, they only need a fighter that is stealthy enough to make sure a WVR happen. + The F-22 doesn't use the APG-81, it uses the APG-77v1. @@M16_Akula-III it isn’t stealthy enough to force a WVR engagement, F-22s and F-35s have had great success against F-18s in combat exercises
The L-Band radar are there to only determine the general location of the enemy, then you could pull the X-band radar to the area of the enemy to search for it.
Thats complete nonsense For starters, those L band antennas are too small to function as a radar. In order for a radar to work it needs to be able to focus radio waves onto the target by forming tightly focused beams, smaller the radar beam greater the effective radiated power or energy density per square km. A radar must have a certain effective radiated power threshold in order to meet the practical power requirements. So you want to have the lowest beamwidth possible in order to maximise detection range among other things, ideally having a beamwidth close to 2°. The aperture size is the fundamental factor determining the beamwidth or Gain (how tightly focused are the radar beams).
At 1 GHz with a 1 meter antenna size you’ll get a beamwidth of 21° - that is several times worse than 1960s era VHF radars on the ground which required >250 kW power to compensate for 4-6° large beamwidth ( Serbian P-15, P-18). And the N036L L-band antenna on Su-57 is smaller than 1 meter.
Due to the small antenna size and relatively bigger L-band T/R modules, only a dozen or so can fit in the leading edge antenna (compared to 1,500 TRMs in the front radar) giving it only a fraction of the front radar’s power.
Also, there’s only a single row of TRMs in the leading edge antenna which makes it impossible to steer beams vertically, that is it can only scan horizontally (azimuth). This is why the manufacturer (NIIP) described N036L-1-01 having only 2D function (azimuth and range
With a 21° beamwidth you need the power of a small city in order to function as a radar. The Su-57’s L-band antennas neither has the size, power nor gain to act as a radar. The entire notion is so ridiculous that even Sukhoi or NIIP never claimed it to function as a radar.
There’s a reason why Low Frequency radars are so large no matter whether they’re on the ground or in the air. Even small business-jet based AWACS with L-band radar have pretty large antenna size.
Israel’s EL/W-2085 carries one of the smallest airborne L-band radar. You can’t fit a radar half that size on Su-57. Not only is there no real estate on a Fighter-sized aircraft for a lower band radar nor is there any notable advantage in carrying one. Even 40 year old F-117 had negligible variation in RCS across L through Ku band. You need to be in VHF band to see meaningful spike in RCS.
The notion that VLO aircraft are only stealthy in X-band is just as ridiculous as Su-57 having a L band radar. The L-band antennas on Su-57 are similar to those on Su-35, its primary function is an IFF interrogator (Friend or Foe ID’). Every aircraft since 1970s have one operating in L band. In addition to this, Su-57’s L-band antenna can also function as a jammer for the internal EW suite.
So no, there is no L-band radar nor any mystical sensor on Su-57 that somehow allows it to better detect Stealth aircraft. It’s just Russian propaganda that’s only believed by people who don’t understand basic physics behind a radar.
As a Marine Corps Infantry man, I'm just worried about our air support.

You can’t hit what you can’t see. Raptor wins. Can’t lock onto a plane that your radar doesn’t know is there.
Considering the SU-27(decades older) could fly circles around the F-22, one would be a fool to believe the SU-57 doesn’t have equivalent or greater technology the the F-22.
The last US space shuttle missions were powered by significantly stronger and more efficient Russian engines...which sat in a warehouse for 20 years before discovery.
You would have to believe in the moon landing to believe the Raptor can compete with the 57. And if you believe in the moon landing, you haven’t looked into it. A farcical joke.

Stealth tech is hyper up to an insane point, especially by doing these dumb "in a vacuum" style comparisons. The USSR and Russia built and builds extremely good and very mobile ground radar units for a reason and it's kinda naive to imagine these fights where two lone fighter planes meet in a complete void somewhere
@@WontSeeReplies planes in this era hardly even dogfight this is not ww2?
I've watched dozens of simulation exercises, and the SU-57's only chance is if it manages to get within visible dogfight range and even then 3 out of 5 engagements went to the F22. But in reality the battle was almost always over long before they jets were in visible range. watching simulations where each side scrambled to engage from any real distance was actually boring to watch... The fighters go up, the SU gets shot down before it even knew where the F22 was.... The only chance the SU had for survival is if it just happened to be tracking directly at the F22, which never happens when you don't know exactly where the F22 is. basically, you can't kill what you can't see, and the F22 will definitely see the SU long before the SU sees it.

Probably because it's harder to cover up the exhaust ports when they're doing 3D thrust vectoring vs rapter's 2D.
the engine fan blades are completely radar visible from the front on the su57 as well as its targeting module.... these combined to give the su57 no stealth capability whatsoever. it would be detected by the f22 or f35 from hundreds of kilometers away...
Both planes may be good weapon system, but to me it depends on the person flying it that can make a big difference

Absolutely. A lot of people forget that unfortunately.
Doesn't matter if it's the most technologically advanced fighter in the world - if you don't have competent pilots flying it, it's practically useless
its not the about a plane it about pilot
In that space, I'd say the F-22 has the edge. The pilots have had combat missions, or are combat veterans. The combat school trainings are usually with combat vets who have flown and are the best in the world.

What is not being mentioned in this and in any comparative simulation is AWACS. This is the eyes in the sky and these guys are the ones that would decide the results of any engagement. Simply put the F22 stays in full stealth - no active emissions of any kind. AWACS finds and locates targets and f22 fires on said targets...comparison done. End of engagement. It's that simple. The part in the video that mentioned networking...is for this purpose. The planes share information with each other - all allied forces can network their view of the battlefield and therefore see everything that is seen by each other.
F35 can also act a mini awacs.
The SU 57 doesn't really stand a chance tbh
A very good comparison. They are both very highly capable machines. You forgot to mention 1 important factor: price
su 57 42 million USD
f 22 150 million USD
You forgot to mention 1 even more important factor: being in actual production... F-22 Raptor in the world 200... Su-57?... 14 lmaooooooo so the F-22 wins as it's an actual plane in production and not some plane that has been stuck as a prototype for like 10 years.

Because we are talking hundreds of miles of operational combat capable jets, and many experts believe the days of dogfighting are over. . . I’d say the stealthier jet wins. Therefore F-22.
But it would be sweet to combine both jets strengths into one Plane.
Thoughts anyone ?
No russia developed jets fit for god fights more
Interestingly enough, fights between 2 stealth fighters will most likely end up as dogfights in visual range.
Stealth still matters here, as the other guy can't really use his radar as a clue. But the F-22 can, off angle pings are gonna work in its favor. Which can be achieved by altitude, flying behind the suspected plane, or getting pinged by him.
It's all nice and good that the Su57 can do some wacky stuff, but there is no beating the f22 in the vast majority of fights.
Also something to keep in mind, lateral movement in thrust can be controlled by engine thrust. Which means you can flat spin.
Their really is no "stealthier" jet. You are only stealthy to the radar you are trying counter. What's "stealthier" to one radar system may be completely useless to another. Its impossible to counter every configuration of radar that exists. What I think it boils down to without taking into account veteran raptor pilots, is one. It isnt who's "stealthier" but rather who has the correct configuration of its targeting system. Every stealth jet ever shot down has neglected this fact. Two, the knowledge of each others configuration.
Need proof? Who won? A cold war era radar system and missle system, or a nighthawk stealth jet a full decade ahead of its birth?
It was the decade old missle system. Stealth is very niche
I can pull up the configuration the f22s stealth was designed to counter, but cant find anything on the su57. From that, the su57 already has the means to counter its stealth
@@donte10111 I was under the impression from a documentary I saw that these two jets are close in comparison to their capabilities with the exception that the Su-57 was bit more “agile” or maneuverable than the F-22, while the F-22 has a bit more stealthier of a design.
From my understanding, largely, these attributes are derived from the design deferences in each jet’s afterburners.
“Although both are fifth generation fighters, the Su-57 significantly differs in design philosophy from the F-22 Raptor. In the key areas of speed, maneuverability and stealth, the Raptor emphasized maneuverability and stealth. The Su-57, on the other hand, places an emphasis on maneuverability and speed, arguably making it similar to the YF-23 Black Widow II.”
“in combat it isn’t always about the smallest radar cross-section or infrared signature, but leveraging the platforms. The Su-57 wasn’t designed to serve as a stealthy fighter like the F-22, yet if the enemy can more readily see it, they can try to shoot it down.”
The F-22 afterburners are rectangular and are more inline with the streamlined body design.
This creates a more (stealthier) design, but doesn’t have the advantage of the Su-57’s multi-directional afterburners.
It is tough call as some claim the F-22 is more maneuverable, but one has to take into consideration what they are trying to describe in maneuverability.
Yet I have also read in multiple sources saying that the Su- 57 is more maneuverable while others.
Most say that the F-22 has better stealth design
@@UltimateCap I would say by design philosophy alone the 22 does have a batter stealth ability, but its unknown how effective a purely frontal stealth system is on on the f22s radar system and vice versa.
Stealth is very hard to argue, every jets stealth technology expires when you know the amount hz it was designed to deflect. For instance I've heard the f22s coating is configured to block out 10hz which basically renders it useless to 8 or 6 hz radars. In the case of the knight hawk, it was easily found by a low frequency radar despite being the current pinical of stealth technology.
I personally would like to see more specifics on maneuverability but from what I understand both jets have their full potential classified. Youd have to ask and hope a pilot would tell you I guess. Stealth aside if every aspect of maneuverability is better the 22 would be a tough opponent for the 57 for sure, especially considering the raptor line has been around long enough to have experienced pilots
Depends on how strong the pilots are. All that tech and agility doesn't matter if you get G-LOC'd, 9G turns are strenuous ASF so civies like us will never create a solid verdict.
what turns? the f22 would destroy the su57 from supercruise, hundreds of kilometers away. the f35 would detect the su57 long before
Both these planes will be frontliners if aliens come 😂
Which one is cheaper to make ? Numbers winns and raptor is older so i have a doubt about the better system.
You loose the sight you loose the fight, we've seen how incredibly stealthy the f-22 is so I think it would win.
По факту радар сушки его замечает точно также только чуть меньше
Lose, not LOOSE.
It sounds more close than I would have thought. But I recall the main point of most of the simulated f-22 fights is the f-22 was able to come up behind the enemy and take them out before the enemy even knew anything was happening. So I think the stealth aspect is more important than increased maneuverability. It has the radio signature of something like a bee.
They did exactly that to a mouthy Iranian F-4 pilot who had no idea the F-22 approached and remained under him until moving behind him and calling him out on the radio. I bet it was a long and wet flight home for that guy.
