How I built my Server Room (3 Months in 10 minutes Time lapse)

  • In the summer of 2016 we decided to move our server room to a new location. Here is the video of the server room build in fast forward. We went for Cat6 cables and patch panel from our cat5.
    It took us about 3 months working on weekends.

    Ok so maybe I didn't clarify well the above video, as I am getting a lot comments that it could of been done in a smaller amount of time. Well yes maybe it could, hands off to people that can do it. When I say in 3 months its not only what you see here. There were 120 net lines we had to pass through six floors, the 3 months also includes the cabling that was done through the floors and ceilings and the plug installation.

      No matter what you do there are always CZcams viewers who could do it better faster, cheaper or whatever. What's especially galling is when the so-called pros do it. If you're a professional then you should know that you can't speculate on the time it took to do a job without knowing the particulars of the given job. You don't know whether they could only get access to the location for limited hours. You don't know if they had legacy equipment that was still in service and could only be shut down at a particular time. We are only seeing what happened in that one room. There could have been issues with the local power utility/electricians getting power to the room. If you don't know the particulars then ask or shut up and keep it moving.

      The more time you waste, the more sure you are of your build. Building faster can create unforseen errors in construction and will screw it up more. As we built our servers for 5 months we've learned that slower is more better than building faster because you do things in detail

      RIP? They're still there lol. I don't understand what the point of leaving them there and putting the wall on the inside is however. If something breaks the glass, it's going to be a pain to replace the window.

    • @DarkStar851
      @DarkStar851 Před 6 lety +4

      It's a safety measure, since someone could bust those windows and walk right into the server room. This is common practice when retrofitting a room that has windows.

    • @corcon6976
      @corcon6976 Před 5 lety

      @@DarkStar851
      Yes, that's the purpose, but still if the windows break, they can't just leave the broken glass on the side of the building only to fall and cut someone. Also, concealing windows helps with heat management because sunlight in the day and darkness at night is a hell of a fluctuation to manage.

    The one thing I see which is a major drawback for this room's use as a server room is the sprinkler system. You don't want water near your network equipment. Other than that nice work. Make sure the worst case scenario is there.

It's rare that you can do that, as typically you have some kind of mess that you have to fix without actually being able to bring it offline. Depends on what exactly you want to do with the servers. Designing the server room, building the server room, maintaining the server hardware, maintaining the software. A server is only a tool, not a business goal.

      Size dosent matter selecting the right equipment is the goal. Always think ahead because a small company might grow and you need to adapt without changing all your systems every time. Select equipment you can upgrade.
