The on/off switch is a really neat idea. No "but" afterwards. I am shit with Home Assistant, and I just have it send a wake on LAN packet to my PC. Of course this doesn't do anything to turn it off, and I'm sure there are various pros/cons to either setup... but just wanted to say "thanks for the idea" and also mention what I'm doing. I might seriously consider something like this because I "only" have a 3080ti but this room really does heat up. Food for thought. Thanks for the vid.
I want to use this solution to run some of my PC games on the TV in the next room. Already figured that long cables would be the easiest way but good thing you brought up the powered (!) USB cables. I just made a small hole to my wardrobe in the wall for 5 cables (ethernet, HDMI, 3 USB), connected UPS, headphone AMP, also my monitor has seven USB3.0 output. Now I have full silence and calmness, also I use sleep mode to wake up by clicking mouse. Zero regrets
Im using my iPhone to turn on my PC with WOL (Wake on Lan) - and a free app to send a WOL package.
Sick! It’s always nice to see different options for clean set ups. Not as clean as having your pc built into a desk, but you can only ask for so much haha

For the power switch of the pc you could also look into those raspberry pi kvm's over local ip (TinyPilot Voyager and the PiKVM for example) you can even control the bios via hdmi in capture.
For me it was even easier. My server room is literally the other side of the wall from my desk.
It's a thick sound isolated wall that keeps all the noise out.
I put my PC cases on shelves against that wall and only need 10ft cables to my desk.
The cables go through the wall behind a sheet of plywood that's 3 inched from the wall and that my desk rests on.
So all cables are easily hidden as well!

I've been running a similar setup for about half a year but with 30 m DP and USB cables with no issues. I've been using WoL to turn on my computer but I like the remote idea!
I used to use an ESP8266 Node MCU to turn my PC from anywhere via MQTT.
(It's backstory after if you want to read)
Then I decided to take it out, make a smart blind motor (which I then also replaced as the motor wasn't strong enough and I need to get a better motor), then it was being used as a pollution monitor until I fried it when I tried to permanently wire it. At least I now have 3 more now to do all these projects at once. Only £4.50 each.

My PC raises my room temp so much, anyone that enters it complains and quickly walks out, so I can't wait to give this a go! I have the same USB Hub as you, but unfortunately it's never successfully powered any USB 3.0 webcams like my Elgato, but hopefully using an extra active USB 3.0 extension cable from the PC to the webcam works. $130 project to end my years of sleepless, sweaty nights, and friends complaining about my PC fan on voice chat *fingers crossed.* Thanks for the simple video, and showing that this MUCH cheaper route does indeed work fine.

I'm also running my computer in another room, I specifically put my office next to the garage so I could run cables through the wall (when I designed my house). My computer isn't fast by today's standards but it's pretty loud with 10 fans in it.
One thing I'd like to sort out is how to keep my computer from getting dust in its current position. Because it doesn't have to look aesthetically pleasing I think extra dust filtering be that some sort of cover or a grow tent seems like an option
Ok so how you really do this on a budget:
First you live in Yorkshire UK, so you LIKE your PC to give off lots of heat as then you can actually feel your fingers during the winter months, while saving on heating the whole house. I just tell the kids a little chill is character forming and they can always come hang out with dad if they want to thaw out some.
Second you build your rack out of 3/4 inch ply with screw in rack rails, find a mid tower case that's less than 19" tall and lay it on it's side, assuming you can't find a cheap rackmount case - I did both. You get the "server rack" vibe going by using shelves on drawer sliders for the "on their sides" PC's.
This way you combine rack-mounted audio gear, power conditioner and UPS, with a dedicated DAW/audio PC, a dedicated gaming PC (I like Nobara atm) and an unRAID NAS. Add a KVM - I just switch between my DAW box and "gaming" box - and you're good to go.
Seriously I have no convenient space to put my rack out side my office - all the available spaces are either too small or already filled with things my SO insists have to be prioritised, at least until the kids leave home ;)

I've had my system in another room for awhile now and I love it. Same basic set up. I use 15' display port cables and some active and passive USB and audio. All of the audio and USB goes into Keystone jacks in the wall under my desk so wireless devices work fine . Finally a small dock on my desk with USB 3.1 for dumping footage from my camera. No issues whatsoever. Not even a hiccup. I never turn off the PC, only put it to sleep, so moving the mouse or a key on the keyboard wakes it up and I'm off to the races. I loved it so much I did the same thing with my VR rig in my living room. Makes the wife happy not having a PC next to the TV stand!

Nice setup! I've been thinking of building a setup like yours for my workstation. My server room is next door and chilled with ac 24/7, thinking of moving my PC over there and run the cable like your setup. I run 4 displays and 8 usb cables to the PC.

Been running s setup like this for years, so that fan noise doesn’t get in the way of audio production/engineering (which I barely ever do any more), but it’s still great for the same reasons here: ultra short distance from PC to server, right next to my UPS, etc.
You might be having that keyboard not detected issue because your UEFI might not be USB3 compatible? May be a setting for that, or if not add a USB2 cable to your snake and that should do it.

i live in 2nd floor of the house and i always had problem with my room heating up with my 500watt PC (measured it with power meter). I test and it really is my PC giving a me heat problems. might want to move out my pc too
I did something similar. Ran a hdmi cable from my office to the front room tv. Great for those cinematic games that are better on a big 4k TV with a sound system. Wireless keyboard and controller 🎮

I know it's been almost a year now, but I did a very similar setup with my fiance and mine's computers. Moved them out of the game room and essentially threw them in a closet. Ran all the cables I needed to and it's a super clean setup. My only gripe is that my secondary monitor's DisplayPort cable seems to be having issues where it'll flicker on and off at seemingly random times. However the fact that the noise and heat are being generated in a seperate room makes up for the mild inconvience of not seeing what my friends post in Discord for a couple of seconds, haha. Glad I wasn't the only guy to see Linus' setup and think "how can I do this, but cheaper?"
So you've given me my next project. I do music and the noise my PC generates while not bad, would be best to be absent. I fortunately can just move my PC 8 feet to the left and it will clip into the next room, right where I have an entertainment setup and my NAS. All I need is a UPS (already on the list for my NAS honestly) and I need to make a pass through for cables. This also fixes the cable I have hanging from my router that is next to my NAS that goes to my PC. Thanks for making me rethink Linus's idea.

nice setup! To turn my PC on, I hooked up some GPIO pins on my rock64 + a relay to the PC power switch. I just run a python script to activate the relay and press the power button. The rock64 also runs wireguard so I can remote in and power it on from anywhere (even from my phone).

Great approach to remove heat from your workspace - like you I'm a noise snob for my workspace. Think you should try the challenge to silence things without water. Fighting the little peripheral connection issues would make me rip everything out. Key point of technology is it should just WORK and be there when you want/need it. The old bad days where being in front meant living with issues are no longer acceptable in my book. Push your ability make it silent in the room!
My ASROCK X570 PHantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 has a thunderbolt 3 controller on board, plus it has a Displayport input that links a gpu to the port so it can output display over thunderbolt. I paid around €200 euro for the board this summer.
My apartment had a random hole in the wall between the main bedroom and the guest room. My desktop sits on this side of it with my server rack two feet away on the other side of it. This seems super logical for my positioning. Only problem is I run a 3700x and a 1060 so I really don't even have any noise or heat to dispel so its probably useless in my case. lol. Thanks for the great video.

My server is in my closet and everything else is in my bedroom. It's all super quiet, but all the dang blinking lights! Routers, modem, switches, UPS's, printers, monitors, security camera DVR... I hang hats on some and some I use post-it notes with black magic marker over the light sources on others. My gaming PC with the big window facing the wall creates a backlit area behind my monitors.
Dad always had good advice. And Raid Owl always has good videos even my non-tech wife can appreciate.
I did a similar thing for my setup but I took a different route
USB 2.0 over Ethernet is really cheap
Displayport lets you daisy chain monitors so you could have run just one cable then split it off to two or three displays.
Though I can't remember how I did it, windows has a feature where you can power on your PC with a keyboard or mouse click.
That is often a bios setting. Likely in the same area as wake on Lan and other power settings.

I had a similar issue with noise inside my pc room with exactly this part on my rig.
The noise and water cooling became an issue.
Then I weight all the costs and work.
Then I finally try my best it part of all my parts. (Including 12 bays nas, 2 10g switches, WiFi) … my mora-3 420 pro external radiator under my desk.
Oh what a God sent device piece of hardware!
Used the adapter to use 4 big noctua fans on each side dual d5 pumps and a bunch of qd3 quick disconnects.
Now I can use a very tiny case almost no fans on it.
Absolutely can’t hear the fans or pumps under my desk
The added bonus… not in my entire life had so much cooling capacity, I can cool 2 entire pc with this things and still god 👍
I can keep by beloved watercooling hobby with expanding a lot a money every time that I go upgrade anything.
I just disconnect change the hardware and plug it again.

In 2014 I've been obsessed with silence because I had to run my rig in the same room I was sleeping.
But main problem was not that, I just thought that modern computing shouldn't require fans just for showing a static desktop.
Already had SSDs, no issue there.
So I removed every damn fan and managed to get a 1kg heatsink to cool down my CPU (which was a i5 4690, so nothing special) and got it working, even gaming with a 1060... but temps always were over 80°C while gaming, as the GTX was the only thing capable of removing hot air from the case...
But at least I had a fanless rig 95% of the time.
Never been that happier, nowadays I try to go fanless as much as I can, even for my (smaller) servers but instead of going with power hungry ones, I go clustered with fanless ones.
YOU READ MY MIND WITH THE REMOTE POWER SWITCH. So I currently have Dell Proliant M130 that has been setting for like 4 months when I decided I'd pick it up for a good price and use it as a backup server type device. I never even installed the HDD's yet... But I want to access my main desktop in my living room and bedroom for playing emulators. The living room is a short run and I'll certainly be using the method you showed in this video. But the bedroom is at least an 80' run. What are my best options? I could maybe setup the Dell in the bedroom or my laptop and remote access, but I haven't researched it much. Could I do this over ethernet cable? Is that a stupid question? How about that one? Thanks!

I have a setup like this, elected to run 30ft display port cables and a USB 3 hub. Never enjoyed walking to my server rack to hit the power button.
I don't have the keyboard error with my hub. I used the Amazon basic hub to start with but upgraded to a ACASIS one that works better. You want a powered hub as the USB cable won't have enough power to drive your peripherals at a 20+ foot length.
Totally just bought that remote power button.
I didn't go the dock route because I didn't mind running 6 display port cables to drive my monitor addiction and there isn't a hub that serves that and displayport 2.1
Would love to do this but im in a rental and don’t have the layout needed. Im less concerned with noise and more with the heat. I live in Minnesota and my office never needs to have the heater on when the pc runs. Water cooling sadly doesn’t help with that as it still dumps heat in the room.
That being said it will definitely be on my mind when I buy a place (if that ever happens) and the remote dongle thing is awesome

I have my desktop virtualized in proxmox and run about 12' of USB/HDMI cables from my rack to my monitor and USB hub. My rack is in the same room("computer room") but it on the wall/corner behind me, wanted a clean desk and a case takes up "too much room". I've also got our 2 in 1 gaming PC in the rack and have cables running from that to our setups, about 15' at the longest cable.
Personally I'd like to go epyc and replace those two machines into one but epyc runs too hot(for the room) and is too much $$ for me right now.
I just bought a house and I'm doing this exact thing to make my space quiet for recording music. Just putting a wall with some insulation between me and my computer is more than enough. Also running an ethernet hdmi-extender and some long USB cords to my tv for easy couch-play.
Someone who has done exactly what I was gonna do in a similar space with similar distances... excellent.
You can enable power on keyboard in any bios since 1989 and use a key combanation to power on any pc.

I really like the approach of this setup however I do wonder, what if we need to go longer? Could a Ethernet cable/adapter works for USB long distance? Getting long video/audio cables is easy enough but usb ends up being the stopping point for this setup... without going crazy in the thousands of dollars.

An even easier way to handle the remote start would be to get some NFC tags and configure the tag to send a Wake-on-LAN packet to your PC (assuming that your MoBo and networking config allow it).

my workflow isn't more complex than word and internet browsing so old dell optiplex is fine, i am however looking to consolidate computers and not run a server and gaming pc. I plan on going for a r9 5900x and virtualize my gaming pc on my unraid server and simply use moonlight, steam in home streaming and parasec to remote in anywhere in the house from any client (optiplex, Steam deck, nvidia shield). I could also use the gaming pc vm horsepower remotely if I have a more challenging task. Of course thats the theory and now I'm collecting parts for the build

does G-Sync work properly for you? I haven't been able to find a long (10-15m) DisplayPort cable to reliably sustain G-Sync on 100Hz 3440x1440 screen;
speaking of USB, we're using 10m USB 3.0 powered hubs in studios and they work flawlessly for years (both PCs and Macs), no issues with detection on boot, fun fact we can even plug one to each other and get 20m (~65ft) with full usb speeds and enough power for an external ssd :D
I'm using a phoossno 10m DP1.4 cable (can be found on amazon), I regularly play at 165Hz 3440x1440 with G sync no issues.
I also got one of their 20m gen2 hdmi cables so I could connect to my LG CX for that 4K 120Hz + VRR goodness
Hello do you think it's viable I wanted to connect my pc to my tv downstairs and I didn't want to go up and down with the pc all the time. Also how about your audio like using headset with mics. I thought I can just use wireless headset with dongle instead but it might be unreliable if I'm downstairs already
I run the same DP cable at 25ft, one 25 ft usb c extension cable to a usb hub that runs my keyboard, mouse, controller, camera, and I have wireless headphones so the receiver is connected directly at the pc without any issues. Simple, voila! Much cooler room and no noise! Back to pushing my gpu to run 4k games without an issue in my room. 😅
I did this, but thankfully it's just on the other side of the wall. So a normal 16ft USB extension cable, then an optical HDMI cable.
Not only no noise, but it keeps the game room from being a sauna.
this video is really cool, i have seen the video from LTT and i believe its nice idea, my problem is not the noise the problem is the heat, my pc draws arround 400-500 watt and is next to me so the heat is good enough especially in my country (Greece) when the summer time is really hot arround 32-42 oC, and expect the heat, i am looking for a way to play games on my big tv that i have on my living room for racing games such as NFS, FORZA HORIZON etc and as you mentioned on the video i dont want to spend that much money to do that, i am looking for a good option
I had that phase with computers and it was nice when it worked but my setup needed around 15 meters of HDMI cable i got expensive usb to ethernet bridge and HDMI signal boosters and it was never good there was always some problem with it. This was back in early 2000 mind you and the cooling fan technology had not matured enough so it was nice when the setup worked. These days i just prefer to have all my computer stuff at arms length.

The wireless power switch is nice but the range could be an issue. I'd just setup wake on lan instead, as long as you are on the same wifi you can actually turn on a PC with wake on lan not just wake from sleep.
That way you can just use your phone to wake the PC.
You can also add a smart switch as a failsafe backup incase the computer locks up. Just ensure in your bios you have the PC set to power on when restoring power.
My primary concern is just heat in a room. I feel like both cpus and gpus have just gone ham on power consumption. At the end of the day, the pc is an inefficient space heater, so a 400w/600w/800w will put that much more heat into a room. I can deal with noise, just put on headphones, but the extra heat gets hard to manage doesn't matter the season. My PC can comfortably keep my room 2 degrees warmer than any other room in the house at
You don’t need onboard thunderbolt, just a tb header and addin card
theoretically, sepreate cables for video and usb (anything else, like audio can be ran though USB) should be quite a bit more reliable but could you could have bandwith issues with usb, would probably be best to run two seapreat lines of usb 2, or find some sort of extender that can do usb 3.

I solved this problem by chucking my PC into my closet beneath the stairs, hooking it up to Ethernet, and using Moonlight and Parsec to stream to client devices all throughout the house. Has the added benefit of being able to stream games to my phone or tablet away from home.
Why Moonlight AND Parsec? I generally get better quality with Moonlight (basically native level, even hundreds of miles away,) but Parsec can be configured to run at boot, before you even log into Windows, which is nice to have as a backup solution for any troubleshooting that might arise.

The only headache for my next upgrade is the video signals, 8k@120Hz cable are impossible to find at sane prices (if they really exist)
I will try the long separate cable approach and for audio I will get DAC with toslink so I don't lose signal over the distance

Have you seen the video that Jeff at Craft Computing did on using his home servers for cloud computing? I think reusing nVidia A16s, P4s and M40s is a great way to get those RTX graphics cheaper and to allocate more resources for your VMs.

you could use an Passiv cooled thin client and just run all over one ethernet cabel. for thunderbolt there are pcie cards to get it for cheap on cheaper mainboards
How’s the latency, if it’s good I plan to rout the cables from my room to my living room in order to play games on the tv.
How about running fast networking and RDP? I'd really like to see results of fast network. Unfortunately I have only basic gig network and wireless seems to increase lag a bit. But even that is fairly good experience. I wonder what it would be even on 2.5gig connection. Is it even remotely close to fool user not having direct access to hardware?
