Thank you to @45Drives for my large electricity bill. (and for sending me the servers...)
I’ve been sitting on a secret project for a minute…my new server. 45Drives reached out and said they wanted to work with me on their biggest build EVER!! I had to say yes. In this video, I unbox the biggest server project 45Drives has ever done. This is the first part in a series where I’m building out this massive server and FINALLY revealing my new server room.

HI
You should give out free minecraft hosting on your servers to all your fans! Like everyone gets a VM :)
This is amazing
Can I have your old stuff, lol, I would give up a leg for a piece of 45 Drives equipment
Please cover the wattage this rig draws.
As someone who didn't do this and now lives with the consequences, please people lift with your legs, not your back. You'll be glad when you get older and can still stand for long periods of time without discomfort. Can't wait to see the crazy stuff you come up with for this setup.
I lift servers every other day and have learned the hard way lol
It’s not even an age thing, it can happen any time. A few years ago, I had the incredible idea of using a store vacuum to empty waters piling up on the street where it meets the driveway and walking to empty the bucket in a nearby ditch, without lifting it properly. It’s how I got an abdominal hernia which fortunately doesn’t cause any issues but I’ll have to live with it for life, as you don’t operate there… Always lift with your feet… this is so true…
You speak truth. I can barely lift my computer monitors these days due to back pain. But then again a car accident didnt really help with that.
Learned the hard way when I torn all the muscles in the lower left side of my back deadlifting because my foot angled slightly too far out causing undue stress and strain on my muscles there.
Yep and lean then kinda roll onto your knees and squat lift from there. But better yet...grab a friend or coworker
1:10 those HDDs sitting on the edge of the table got me nervous!
it sounds like you are speaking from experience lol
They are like kids, they bounce!
You were not alone
Don't worry, this isn't Linus Drop Tips.
Yes, he was at risk of going full LTT!
There's no better time to bring back the #BigAssNAS
Looking forward to checking out the rest of the series and the new server room!
His server room is gonna be real NAS looking.
You think it’s possible to water cool a server
Why so many?
Damnnnnn this is the highest number of storage drives I have seen in my lifetime
I worked for a cloud provider years ago, and we had 1000+ servers with 45+ 3TB-6TB drives in each (actually were the original designers of the 45drive format and then open sourced the design)
i think he might even have 45 of them?! 🤔
If anyone deserves this its you man. I can't wait to try and learn more awesome stuff from you. Thank you for showing us and helping us learn everything you do
This is cool. Can't wait to see what you do with all that stuff!
Man i love all that hardware unboxing ❤..Have fun building it Chuck 💪✌️
Alright, I’m excited to see this one play out…that’s absolutely insane. 😂
2:12 NICE CATCH 😉🙃
CHUCKING them boxes around cant wait for this series
Nice to see the Canadian 45 Drives getting the love outside of Canada. :)
I'm celebrating my 46th year in high tech now and still just love my job more and more every day. while working (network engineer) in the r&d department of the largest computer manufacturing company in the country, (world) I regularly get to "play" (support) with development teams having access to 1k-x of equipment like this every day. I know how we'd configure this kind of equipment, and can't wait to see what chuck does with this over the coming weeks. a few years back, I built out (for my own edification) a multi 4x proc server cluster with 4x 90 drive storage arrays, just to play with throughput testing on such a massive scale. mind you, this config is still small in comparison to the level of configurations we regularly design for customers, but it was still fun to do.
Wow that's a lot of working days under your belt haha
We need more of this. Merry Christmas!!
I was suggested your channel by a co-worker (I work IT for one of the 150 Goodwill regions in the US). Been loving your content, you better believe I've liked and subscribed. Can't wait to see the server room. The cables better be immaculate.
Can't wait to see your power bill after you turn all these things on. Still, at least you won't have to use any other heating for your house.
Ha I have a single server that would heat more then all of those combined.
Looking forward to this series. I hope you can dive into the differences between a NAS and a SAN sometime during the series
So much for the Linode sponsorship, won’t be needing the cloud anymore!
Awesome you deserve it!!! And thank you for passing down your knowledge to all of us.
Awesome intro to the series, blessed is an understatement. Excited to see what you put all the servers to use for, Following.
Wow, that’s some serious storage! I once worked for an IT outsourcing company that had less than this. I’m only surprised 45Drives didn’t send you a power plant to go with it all
This is so great because it has context and reality. Would love to see more. you are awesome !!!
Nice Chuck!!! ; I personally cant afford a huge server like this so Im really excited waiting for the assembly to learn how to put this project on production!
My guess is he is setting up a ceph storage cluster. The two smaller nodes would be monitors/gateways. Really cool stuff going on here
Same, ceph immediately came to mind when seeing all of those storinators
Yep I think he will do some sort of HA.
👀
They already have a lot of videos on CEPH though, maybe GlusterFS or PetaSAN?
Bro i'm the biggest fan fo yours, keep uploading, It's always fun to watch your videos, you teach with fun.
Holy cow! That's sweet!
Woot 45 Drives representing Cape Breton, Nova Scotia!!!
I was a CNE back in the late 90's and have only worked with servers since then. I remember Hitachi coming out with a 10Gb Lun in 2001. It was high-tech and the size of a large closet. I bought a Mac+ in 1985, and remember the external 20Mb HD I got for it. It fit perfectly under my Mac. It's amazing how technology has moved along at such high speeds. I love it! I always say to people, to be good at IT, you have to make it a vocation.
We have some very old machines where I work still left over but not really used much (it’s a CNC Laser shop) and some of them have floppy drive ports and we still have some of the drives. The fact that we have 16tb hard drives about the size of these couple mb floppy drives is awesome and cool to see haw far tech has come
@@alecmiller5296 Nice. When technology 'works', it's like magic!
So excited for this series... Awesome Stuff.
45Drives is awesome. I've built a 1.5 PB Ceph cluster with them, and they're great.
By the looks of it, they sent you a full cluster. The Q30s will be host the OSDs, MGRs, and MONs for Ceph, and the 2 smaller servers are Gateway which host the MDS for Ceph, but can also export the Ceph Pool as NFS, SMB, iSCSI etc..
But he said his VMs too. Which leads me to think something like Proxmox with CEPH or even VMware with vSAN or some other hyperconverged thing.
The large amount of SSDs leads to me think that there'll be 2 storage pools, 1 RBD pool with SSDs, and 1 CephFS pool with HDDs. Proxmox VM disks can be directly mounted on top of RBD pools. Unless maybe they're using the gateway nodes as Proxmox nodes? Will be interesting to watch this series develop. @@FlexibleToast
I'm not a CEPH guy so I don't know the intricacies. But Proxmox provides a GUI to help with the install that could make it dead simple. Simple enough that even I could do it using SSD cache for HDD pool and only the most basic CEPH knowledge.
Broo this is crazy, why would anyone need so much storage but also you are networkchuck so makes sense lmao. This is actually cool stuff
Raw video files are large. Some cameras shoot Gbs a second. They’re not just keeping the smaller CZcams final version. :)
Wow! Those are at least 75k of awesome Hardware! Have fun!!
I am looking forward to the future videos. More server stuff please
Love you Chuck and Bro this is going to be an epic series!!!
Nice video!!! I would love to have just 1 Storinator!!! and you have 6? wow! looking forward to see the series.
cant wait to see more!!
Holy crap!!
That Epic Chuck! Nice :D
Now I am excited for the new video! Dont make us wait :p
"It's like Christmas Day over here. . . There's a box in a box. . ."
Are we related, that's a common theme on Christmas in my family- box in a box. Hahaha.
Lived the video, and maybe a bit jealous. (Or more than a bit. Maybe byte. Or terabyte.)
I smell clusters. Do I smell clusters?
Looking forward to this series, that look like some serious kit.
Lots of storage for lots of linux .iso files of course ;)
Can’t wait for this!
Oo man, I can't wait to see. 👍
I want one build like this! Crazy network pc!!!
❤it!
45 drives should have sent you a box cutter lol 😂 seriously jealous
I’m so jealous holy crap I can’t wait till I’m on your level
This video is perfect timing. I've already ordered parts for a new file server. I went for 512 GB of RAM in 64 ECC sticks 3200mhz. Power consumption was a big factor will be interested to see the final details.
Oh man!! This is awesome @45drives can I have just a couple of those 16 TB drives 😂
This the kind of gift that I want in my life....!!!😋🤩😋🤩
That's awesome. I see power panel and air conditioner upgrades in your future. Time to add a solar array and battery wall.
The beauty!!!!
That's like the best Christmas ever!
Congratulations for a new server
Love it!
Drool, load proxmox, then slap the forbidden samba on it, and then cifs , and every Linux machine has the same drives/paths on the whole network.
The immediate thing I appreciated about the video is that you are using SCISSORS instead of some obnoxious hunting knife to open boxes like normal people do lol - back to the video!
Chuck!
That’s a cool Storinator and all but that Ron Swanson mug tho?
For real though looking forward to the future content on this nas
"Take that Linus Tech Tips" SHOTS FIRED! Love it!
Looks like the Red CZcams NAS upgraded to Golden + .Thanks N Chuck!
I've worked in IT for decades and I don't want to go back to being "server guy", but damn!! Im envious and don't know why LOL!!!
Thanks a lot for your contents
Love the Counter-Strike sound aha. 3:55
I look forward to working in your AWS competitor!
This is AWESOME!
OMG i am so exicted to see what happens next with those :O
I don't know if you need it, but it would be cool to make (at least a virtual) cluster with a parallel file system, i.e. Spectrum Scale or Lustre
Nice job , welldone , wating for rest of the series.
Sultan From Kabul AFG
Can't wait to see what you have in Stor-inator!
We may have to steal that one, if you haven't trademarked it yet.
Lift with your knees not your back :D
Love watching this channel when I need a break from my CCNA studies.
Sorry if this is off topic. I have been watching some of your videos on Docker etc. I was wondering if you had, or can make a video on installing docker on a ubuntu server, not on the main drive where the OS is, but on a 2nd drive? Thanks. I find your videos fun but informative. Keep it up. Antony
Congratulations man. I hope we can have access to also use the server?
Who doesn’t love it NAS’s I sure do!
@1:10 save the coffee! LOL
Awesome... 45 drives should send something like that to me too! Need it but would never afford it.
This would have to be the first vid ive seen you NOT have a coffee break. Looking forward to progress updates.
*WoW!!! That's Going to be a Crazy Setup!!!*
Overkill you ask?? NO!!! Never overKill!!
That's a lot of 45 drives boxes in your thumbnail... I'm definitely watching this one!
😯😲😲😲 That's Huge!!!
Somebody watching us in 30 years will be like I have that amount of storage on my phone
Christmas morning for tech nerds. You are setup for a long time
i love 45Drives cases. I want one so bad but to just buy the case alone was BEYOND expensive for just the case.
happy for you :)
Wow 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I just want a cool little server lol😂
Now, installing this with Promox 8 + Ceph configured as HA ! Planning to do that but with 3 x HP EliteDesk G2 i7-6700 (32 GB RAM + 480 GB SSD SATA + 1 TB SSD M.2 NVME) for my small Home Lab ! I could not afford this type of material from 45Drives (or other) and here in Belgium Electricity is so expensive ( +/- 0.40 €/kwh) that it's not possible and i was looking for low concumption computers !
I'm will watch your futur videos to see what you will do with these monsters servers !
Well, you deserve it! Keep up with your great videos...
I was waiting soo bad for a new video
EPIC!
Hit the gym Chuck!! 💪😂
so many old man noises! love you chuck!
Crazy amount of storage that cant wait to see the final outcome
can't wait this
Bro gonna become his own whole ass Linode lol, can't wait to see what you do with it
USE A BOX CUTTER But actually though. I love this channel this is great! Amazing video!
Hi Chuck,
pls make a video abouit the Gemini Protocol. Like how to use it, how to set up a svr, how to set up a capsule and so on.
best regards
Roland Echo
Chuck: Hey, 45Drives, I need a storinator for a project, could you help?
45Drives: say no more
/send truckload of storinator
45Drives: hope this helps
Chcuk: hmmmmph *Raise hand behind Stacks*
We may need to start branding some semi-trucks, if this keeps up!
@@45Drives you could stack the containers vertically
Random suggestion. Anytime you get a huge heavy box with a heavy thing inside with the foam block packing, flip it over with the flaps open. lift the box off the heavy thing vs the heavy thing out of the box. Lifehack!
Or do it on the floor
Lets goooo🎉
0:10 brother chill😂
