Woodturning: A Square Sapele Lidded Box

  • Today's project is a square lidded box with a finial made out of sapele. It's something very different and I don't see many square lidded boxes on CZcams. This lidded box was a lot of fun to make and I got to work with a bunch of different tools that I don't usually get the chance to use when making a turning project.
    I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!

      Thank you very much Brad! I still consider myself a newbie too. Seeing some other channels and or even tv shows (This Old House and New Yankee Workshop) made me think you needed so much experience and expensive tools to get into woodworking. I started my channel to document my journey and to help others too. I wanted to show that all you need is basic tools and a willingness to learn to be successful. - Ed

You can still turn another. Maybe with something contrasting. Ok, I watch you making the finial. At what point before parting it off did you dry test to see if the hight or th ewidest part of that finial is in proportion with the base. From your picture it looks to big for that base. Did yo actually draw it on paper and then followed the measurement ot did you just wing it on the lathe? Even if you wing it it makes sense to take off the chuck while you have the tenon on to see how it looks before you get rid of the tenon.
    you also said that no one has doen any squre box on the you tube, I'd suggest that you look at this.czcams.com/video/Vmz5BKXBGLA/video.html

      Thank you for taking a look at my little project! I'm a relatively new turner so I'm still learning and have a lot still to learn. I got the idea for the box from Woodturning Magazine and used their measurements. The lid was cut to length plus a little for the tenon based on that article. With that said, I'm still learning the art of proportions. I don't believe that I said there are no other square boxes on CZcams. In fact, in the description, I say that I don't see many square boxes on CZcams. Thank you again for watching! - Ed

      @@WolfRidgeWoodworking I can appreciate that and all of us have to start somewhere, however wouldn't you think that the viewers don't know that you are new turner? You have to be mindful of what you video and put on the WWW. there are many children who are minors and get home before actually the parents are home and watch all kind of stuff. And not knowing what they will try away from Mom and Dad. So , it's good to be responsible what you put on the web.

    • @phillipmedghalchi5378
      @phillipmedghalchi5378 Před 4 lety

      @@WolfRidgeWoodworking You may want to look at the Gulden Rule article I think on the AAW site (I may be wrong but you can probably find it on the web. I usually finish the box (base and the lid) then bore a tenon for the finial and do not glue in the finial, the when I have it on the lathe I turn the whole thing together. Then I take the box with the finial not glued in innside the house and put it up on somewhere high and next few days I look at it from different angle If I am satisfied then I glue the finial in at the lathe. If not I can take it to the shop ad refine the design. Of course once you do enough of them ( 50+) your eyes will get used to designing it on the lathe and fit it the first time. If everything go right with the band and government ordering people to stay home. I have to do a demo on boxes and the finials; time allowing in April at our club and I can let you know when you can watch it on the web. Good luck to you. Kepp up the good work.
