Inspired by presentation at the AAW symposium, this project is a turned square box. Actually, it is a cube in 3D.
The cube is walnut 3x3x3, finished with shellac and rattle-can lacquer. The inside of the lid is textured with a Wagner texturing tool. The exterior is textured with a two toothed rotary cutter. The rough surface was then cleaned with an abrasive wheel to soften corners.
The box is indexed with a 1/8" brass pin to keep edges aligned for a consistent view especially since the box is not round.
For texturing and some finishing, I used 30mm and 50mm chuck pins from two weeks ago.
I like it and dream of future variations.
We're preparing for this year's Ornament Challenge - details will be at www.OrnamentChallenge.com
Enjoy.

The tough part for me was getting the top and body edges to fit flat together. Fun project.
That's why they have to be turned together

Nice, Alan. You're always thinking outside (and inside) the box.
Bill
Thanks Bill

Alan
Very interesting box, Alan. I may have to try something like this.
Go for it!
Alan
That's a nice little project. Thank you for sharing
You are welcome
Alan
Enjoyed your video. Very instructive. Have you ever considered grinding the center spur off of a forstner bit in order to create a bottoming bit? You then drill most of the hole with an unaltered bit and drill just the last 1/4" or so with your matching altered bit to create a finished hole quickly and with very little effort.
Yes I have but hesitate to modify the bit.
Meanwhile, If I just stop a bit more short, I can clean up with a box scraper which could be required anyway.
Alan
Well done Alan. I agree with you about embelishment but in this case it was required and done very well. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and continue to stay safe.🙂🙂
Glad you enjoyed it Glen
Alan
Great video, that was one of my favorite demos at AAW
Mine too!
Very nice
Thanks
Alan
Neat! Thanks!!
Glad you like it!
Alan
Nice project. Very interested in the 3d printed corner jig and pins for the chuck. Care to share a link or file?
Just drill out a bolt or steel rod and glue it to a wood angle. Then you have it.
Alan
Interesting
I found it interesting also. :)

M&Ms!
Why Not?
Hi ho, Allen thanks for this one, i cant wait to get down the “creation cave” to try making it myself. How did you make the impression of your name in the bottom?
I need my cave to cool off!
I used a laser for the signature. Don't like the company so that's all I'm saying.
Alan
@@AsWoodTurns nope I’m not going to do laser stuff, its not in the budget and - AND my head is already full (thats what it feels like) so if i learn laser stuff it will push out something I’ve already learned that i might later rely on.
@@WoodMonk3y I understand the head full feeling. :)
I'll bet your wife says to put jewelry into the box. After all, beautiful, handcrafted box needs beautiful, handcrafted objects.
She has additional ideas
Alan
You could put coins in there ?
Gold foil wrapped chocolate coins?
