Don't know what this wood is but it started as a tangled mess. Gave me some troubles along the way but that's the fun of it! Wait till you see what it became. Finished in shellac.

Hmmm, it's kind of turtle shaped if a turtle was very flexible and could lay down in a hammock! Mostly I see a beautifully finished piece of artistic wood that I'd want mounted on my wall. Whenever I watch a wood turning video and it goes to slo- mo, I just know disaster is a out to strike. I'm so glad neither you nor it got damaged! Thanks for the fun, Phil 😊

Thank You Phill.... WOW, you figured out how to hold that "thing", excellent. Phil you are a woodturner that when you decide to turn something, whatever something that may be, you figure out how and you do it!!! My 2 thumbs up to you Phil. A bit difficult to turn with that interrupted cut but it all worked out for the good and I think that wood has a very nice color. The before & after are quite dramatic. So Phil the name of the hedge/stump is Escallonia ( Pink Princess or Fradesii ). There is perhaps 50+ of these dead 25-year-old hedges that were 5+ foot tall. Why they decided to die I do not know. A very durable and attractive hedge when healthy.
Very nice turning today Phil and until next time ... TM😁

Wow am I wore out. Just watching you turn that I could almost feel every cut. But man oh man did that come out cool looking.
Just an amazing job of turning it Phil. It looks a bit like the Camelia I have and I think you turned a piece of it. Very hard wood.
I love the worm screw setup that Tuffy made for you. Worked like a charm
And that drill press clamp is the cat's meow. Sure did the trick. I have one of those that a good friend of mine gave me.
And it is mounted on a drill press just like yours. And I bought mine new from Sears about 50 years ago as well. Mine came with the tilting table that you hook up on the back side.
That is what makes it so hard to lift up and down. Good ole Harbor Freight trailer jack has solved that issue. I am getting so lazy I might put a motor on the jack LOL.
A top of the line turning my friend,
    Gary

It's a squirrel pool lounger.... love the way that you can take a piece of wood that, for most, would remain at the back of the pile and turn it into something to be proud of. When it threw itself off the lathe I feared for the recess being snarled up as it was living on the ragged edge already but it was just a little nick, phew. Lovely piece of art Phil, as always. That shoe looks awfully uncomfortable but as a sleigh now... I can see Santa urging on his reindeer towing his sacks on another section behind...
Today its too humid, grey, wet and quite miserable over here so I suppose I'm dreaming the summer away! Not really, we're very grateful not to be suffering the heat for long spells so far this year.
Thats a such lovely little piece Phil, thanks to that ingenious device and your talent it really gave the escalonia root a second life. Its normally a hardy shrub, we have them over here, the bees love their little round pink flowers. Something must have changed dramatically in their environment to kill them off if there was no noxious substances sprayed on them. Or...maybe twenty-five years is a good innings for them, could just be that if they're left in the wild...anyway, thanks Tuffy for putting it into the hands of your talented friend!

Great job! I don’t think I would have taken the challenge. I always try to figure out the center, yet this piece of wood is difficult to guess. You did a fantastic job!!

Beautiful bowl, Phil. I don’t know what kind of wood that is but I must admit, I don’t really care. It is absolutely gorgeous, whatever it is. You are the master, my friend. 👏👏👏👏👏
    All the best,

🙋‍♂️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Hi Phil it's mazing how you manage to create such fantastic pieces out of so strange and odd shaped bits of FOG wood. I think that because you always manage, your friends are setting you bigger challenges, but they haven't defeated the master turner.

I love this one Phil, it looks to me like a bear reclining in a hammock - so glad you kept on going with it! All the best Phil - take good care of yourself!

That is just way too cool! 😎 As you're holding it toward the end, the profile made me think of a Victorian reclining couch. Well, in miniature, anyway.
Thanks to Tuffy for the shrubbery! 😂

Hi Dave, ... Phil always seems to figure out a way to hold these odd pieces. All you woodturners have tricks up your (rolled up) sleeves.... TM

I remain in awe as always. Difficult piece from the start. I enjoy your ideas and approaches to problems. Thats also the first time I've see you or any remove the mortise. But your opinion on not leaving any sign of how it was held makes perfect sense. The bowl is fantastc as usual. Lobe the bark and natural look of the contort piece. And i was seeing a whale or at least the whale tail. Excellent job Phil!
