...great ideas...especially for me, a new wood turner, with a cubbyhole in my garage just big enough for my mini lathe...👍
Go for it!
Thank you Mike. Very good ideas!
Very welcome
Very informative and some beautiful designs you have done. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much 😊
Great lecture on design
Many thanks
Thanks! A great video and appreciate the inspiration on various designs
My pleasure!
Thanks Mike. A lot of good info. You need to do another How-To video on texturing, in particular how you got the nice herringbone pattern. Thanks. Cheers, Tom
Great suggestion!
Great suggestion!
Thank You!
Welcome!
Thanks for sharing Mike
My pleasure!!
Really enjoyed this,
So glad!
thank you very much! Your Video ist great vor me (Beginner)
Glad to hear that!
Have watched a number of your box making videos over the past couple of years. This was a great summation of the design elements. Thanks
Wow, thank you
Very creative
Thanks a lot
Really good video. Great for inspiration.
Glad it was helpful!
Great informative video
Glad you think so!
Just when I thought I knew everything about everything Mike Peace comes out with a new video which proves that I have lots still to learn…
Learning is growing!
Lots of good examples Mike. So many reminders of the variety of styles and lids joints that we can chose. I would be so bold as to say my various little birdhouse ornaments are small boxes with lids glued on and holes in the sides. Enjoyed.
Right on! One of Chris Stott's 50 boxes is a miniature birdhouse.
Good examples of the different aspects of box making, and easy to understand. Thanks, Mike.
Very welcome
Well done Mike. This is a very comprehensive discussion. 👍👍 Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and continue to stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you kindly, Glen.
pretty cool stuff
Thanks.
Great video Mike. Now you really got the idea juices flowing in all of us turners heads lol. I haven’t turned a lot of boxes but i now have plans to get to working on some what with all of the inspiration that you have just set in front of me.
Thanks. They are all beautiful. I find my fingers and hands don't always obey what my brain is telling them to do!
Practice, Practice, Practice.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning Will do!
Good discussion Mike. It is an easy way just to turn the same thing, but turning different styles and adding texturing, coloring, inlays, inserts, and pyrography make unique pieces
Take care my friend
Cheers
Harold
So true. And Embellishing knowledge is transferable to other turnings.
Good one Mike, it gives us more idea's so thank you for this one. I guess we never stop learning.
Problem solving and learning keeps us growing as a turner!
Thanks, Mike. You have given me a lot to think about. Just finished a couple of scoops from your last video
Excellent!
Nice! Thanks for sharing your work and showing different designs.
Thank you! Cheers!
Love those designs, Mike- they are as inspirational as they are unique!
Glad you like them!
Thanks, Mike! Just what I needed. In a terrible lack of inspiration.
Step up your game, Lewis. You can do it!
Do the thing and you will get the energy to do the thing. I think inspiration comes from doing the things you love to do and don't let your problems hold you back. when in my work shop this then becomes my world

Hi Mike, the Raffen book “Turning Wood” is back in print in a new 3rd edition. I just got a copy from Book Depository in the UK, also waiting delivery of his Bowl Turning book 😊
Wonderful video, Mike! I really enjoyed seeing all your examples of boxes. I plan to start box turning in the next few weeks.
Go for it!
Lots of great information Mike. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! It was great meeting you at AAW this year!
Thanks! You too!
Thanks for this one Mike. As usual very inspirational, I've got a box on the lathe as I write this & I'm now going to add some gold wax to the texturing I've done inside the lid. 🙂
Sounds great!
Thanks, Mike; comprehensive and a good boost to the imagination. I enjoy box turning and threading, but could not thread pen tops(over the nib), even with taps and dies. So I used the piston(snap) fit, with an inner ridge. Very pleased with the result, using English elm. One slat from an old pallet provides plenty of blanks for pens and needle cases! Bernard.
Maybe I should a video on pen turning. What do you think?
@@MikePeaceWoodturning I quite expect that you would provide the odd novel tip; so yes please. Bernard.
Got an insert/texturing question. I know nothing on this topic. In this video you talk about saving medallions that you practiced texturing on to use. Question is texturing does it matter if you do this on side grain or end grain? Good box explaining video.
Depends on the wood pattern and grain as to which to use. A thin medallion is too small for wood movement to be an issue. End grain wil take texture more evenly and easier to practice on the end of a cylinder in a chuck.
Hi Mike I got a small wood lath and i think it’s to high what is the proper height for a small lath ?
Be
General rule of thumb is your spindle should be at elbow height.
great video - I love boxes 👍. I think bowl turning is a great skill to learn but ultimately I find bowls far less useful than boxes, they take up too much space and waste far too much precious material!
I totally agree!
