  • On BudgetEDH we build fun and optimized commander decks with a pre-set budget in mind. In this week's episode, we build a $100 budget Chatterfang, Squirrel General deck from the Magic the Gathering new set Modern Horizons 2. Chatterfang is a Legendary Squirrel that has the ability to double up all of your tokens created, by creating a squirrel with each token that you generate. This is a powerful ability that lends well to several combos, one of which is in our deck. In addition, Chatterfang also has the ability to sacrifice squirrels to either pump or kill creatures on the battlefield. Due to this, we went with an aristocrats theme for this Chatterfang deck because of the synergy that Chatterfang has with it's built-in sacrifice outlet and token generation. We can also win the game through combat as well by amassing a ton of squirrels and pumping them up to swing out for lethal.

    Chatterfang is certainly a good combo commander. I just wish that there was a squirrel with a Rat Colony ability and have Nantuko Shrine and Thrumming Stone in the deck

    Can't wait to break apart my K'rrik and Willowdusk (precon) decks for Chatterfang! I'm only spending $30 or so for this deck of my dreams!

    Nadier’s Nightblade is another great aristocrat drainer in this deck.

    What would you swap out with this deck for Skeletal Swarm? I think it'd work well but I don't know what to cut.

    I’m new to commander, but how can you add black cards to a commander deck that is supposed to be mono green ?

      It's ability counts towards it's color identity

    I'm a little confused about how the Pitiless Plunderer goes infinite with Chatterfang.
    You tap a mana source for one black and use Chatterfang's ability to sac a squirrel. Pitiless Plunderer procs and creates a treasure which procs Chatterfang and you get a replacement squirrel.
    I see you can repeat this process as long as you have non-treasure black mana sources.
    Once you run out of those if you power Chatterfang with a treasure token you're going to end up with exactly the same number of treasure and squirrel tokens. It's infinite sure, but there is no gain in the number of tokens from there, the number stays static.
    Or am I missing something? I'm at 13:13 in the video, is there a token doubler in play or something here?

      It’s an infinite mana combo
      It works best with 2+ squirrels.
      Tap a mana use Chatterfang to sac a squirrel and kill a squirrel.
      Pitiless procs twice giving back your two squirrel, and you gain two treasures.
      You then start the process again each time netting +1 treasure.
      Toss in things that proc off sacs or death and you got the game my dude.

      Each time you sac a squirrel you will give something+1-1 and repeat its a board wipe infinitley.

    I don't think this deck is 100$ budget, I just spent 15minutes trying to get its tcg price lower by checking versions and it still shows even at lowest price 131.81$ with 4 mh2 cards missing. So closer to 200$

    • @BudgetEDH
      @BudgetEDH  Před 3 lety +1

      Without chatterfang it should be close to $100, sorry that I didn’t mention that in the video.

      @@BudgetEDH oh that's too bad. Guess I'll have to make some cuts to get it down to an actual 100. Shouldn't be too bad now that chitter Fang is 35

    fresh meat 14:45 don't work with tokens cuz the don't go to the graveyard when they die

    • @BudgetEDH
      @BudgetEDH  Před 3 lety +5

      They do go to the graveyard actually.
      Tokens go to the graveyard as regular creatures, and are removed as a "state-based effect" when a player gets priority again. They stay in the graveyard long enough to trigger abilities, like the one of Soulcatchers' Aerie, before they are removed.
