    in CoHF, heavenly fire broke the bond between jace and sebastian because it was ultimately an evil bond. in QoAaD, the heavenly fire broke the parabatai bond between emma and julian because they were in love, which makes the bond ‘unholy’. i think heavenly fire completely eradicates anything evil/sinful, so that explains why em and jules’ parabatai runes got affected and not their other runes. jace’s parabatai rune wasn’t affected though, because his relationship with alec is platonic and therefore not unholy. i was confused at first too but it makes more sense when you reread jem’s explanation

    One of the most surprising thing about the book for me is how little everybody cares about *losing Alicante*. It's your home. It's your country and Alec and the rest of them are like "ok, Zara, take it, we won't want it anymore, see ya!". Then Alec and Magnus are getting married and everyone is happy... AND IDRIS? Paula Troncoso i think it says pretty early on in the mortal instruments that its mostly older shadowhunters and core members of the clave who live in alicante. Most of the able shadowhunters live in institutes around the world. I doubt any of Alec's generation of shadowhunters (and especially his close friends and family) see alicante as their actual home since they've lived their entire lives in new york/other institutes.

Emma and Julian didn't have to deal with any repercussions from turning into literal giants and killing people, and they were totally let off the hook by the Clave.

    I feel like, the simplest most basic answer to some of these issues is simply this: It's not actually the end of the story.
    It's "common" knowledge that TDA is the lead in to TWP with Kit, Dru and Ty, and I feel as if the things with the Parabatai curse and the giant demons and all that mess (specifically the conversation with Jem/Emma/Julian) felt like a big... WinkWink NudgeNudge moment? Maybe it's just me and I'm completely wrong lol, however it feels as if this was setting up for big things to go down in the finale trilogy, hence the awkward and super unnatural endings to some things that CC may actually be planning to have come back up later.

I think seeing the direct aftermath served to plunge you headfirst into the story and sustain the really emotional and raw atmosphere that the last book ended with. Personally I feel like skipping ahead in time at all would have glazed over the emotional impact, and the fact that cassie didn't do that at all made Livvy's death and the aftermath much more real and powerful.

  • @emmachanel1981

    ALRIGHT KIDS, listen, because here's how I interpreted this parabatai curse resolve-thing: Emma and Jules became angels, right? If you look it up, the biblical Nephilim is often interpreted as "fallen angels", and I would have no doubt that that was what Cassie was trying to get across, you know? Maybe not fallen angels, but angels of some kind. Literally everyone on that battlefield was like "o shit they angels" when that Mess happened, right? Okayokayokay so, angels are filled with the heavenly fire, and so that was what burned throughout Ems and Jules. And what other character has also been filled with God Flames in the past?? Jace "I'm A Pervert, Just Last Week I Asked Clary To Buy Me-" Herondale. Soooo Cassie tends to write in a specific formula, and I noticed something when it came to heavenly fire. When it's used, there's normally something that it destroys. Mostly an "unholy" spell/bond, since the fire is heavenly, right? It was said by the Queen that the parabatai curse was "evil in nature" or whatever the fuck, and obviously the bond between Jace and Seb was a Whole Ass Sin. So it would make sense that the curse on Em and Jules would be broken after being drowned in holy fire. But what takes the fire out of them? The love of another (example, Clary for Jace and the Blackthorn family for Em/Jules). Since everyone in the past was terrified of two parabatai's falling in love and becoming giants, no one probably thought "dang we should, like, be loving o whatever" and just let them burn and/or die. And because angels run on heavenly fire, it makes a lot of sense that once it was taken out of them, Em/Jules would go back to being humans. And without their parabatai bond.
    idk, just how I thought it went, I could be like, 1000000% INCORRECT on this lol.

      this is also what I thought!! also sebastian was killed with heavenly fire burning all the bad in him,,, and since he was mainly bad, the bitch died.... so since the bond is flawed bc Jonathan Shadowhunter made it the fire just tweeted out of emma and julian
      im thinking jace and alec's parabatai bond lived through bc only one entity was mildly stabbed with heavenly fire.

    Please correct me if I’m wrong but, I think the reason their parabatai runes got destroyed was because the fire they had when they were giants was heavenly fire. heavenly fire burns away things that are bad (especially bonds/ties I think) i.e in CoLS when it cut the tie between Jace and Sebastian. I think because being parabatai was a bad thing for Jules and Emma (as it stopped them from being together) it broke their parabatai tie, destroying their runes. Kinda like how it broke Jem’s silent brother tie, as he never really wanted to be a silent brother. Hope this helped but I’m not sure how correct it is lol

      @@user-cg3vw1rf4i I thought that relationship becoming canon was meh. And I do not classify myself as a closed-minded person. I would have had no problems with it if Kieran and Cristina's feelings had been more fluid throughout the series, because the way it read from the beginning I see she was curious about him, which somehow turned into desire in QOAAD but the notion of her loving him romantically on an equal level to Mark just didn't get across to me no matter how it was written in QOAAD. I could see that CC wanted us to understand that it was this great love between 3 people but I felt like Cristina's original thoughts about love shown in LM and what she showed between her and Kieran in LOS + QOAAD contradicted that. I could understand the complexity of the love and emotions shown in dialogue between Mark and Cristina and the ways in which their love had developed over the books. However, the Cristina/Kieran side of the threesome wasn't developed enough which is why it felt like to me that the pairing was bluetacted on.
      It's not necessarily that all people who share my opinion of disliking Kierarktina all are closed-minded and whatnot, some like me aren't. I can't wait for Kitty in TWP. However, QOAAD is not CC's best book. It's written beautifully, however, it is full of plot holes and as the last book of a series it was not very conclusive. One of CC's plot holes was definitely Kierarktina, it was underdeveloped, whereas others weren't such as Marktina, Blackstairs or Kierark.

    • @karkatvantas9557
      @karkatvantas9557 Před 5 lety +5

      @@DelenaStberry No it wasn't underdeveloped. It was obvious that that was going to happen in Lord of Shadows. The dancing scene? Kieran's just general fascination with Cristina? Cristina stopping hating Kieran and beginning to admire him? The only reason you're surprised is because you weren't expecting it. It was set up perfectly.

    • @user-cg3vw1rf4i
      @user-cg3vw1rf4i Před 5 lety

      @@DelenaStberry Well, it's interesting, isn't it? For example, my favorite character from TDA (besides Kit and Emma)is Kieran, and in Lord of Shadows, I was very happy reading Cristina respecting him in ways that Mark did not (Kieran commited a mistake in LM, but for me, it was never that deep. At least not enough to say he was abusive or something like that). I understand their first kiss in QOOAD was a little bit rushed, but in all honesty, I was happy reading about them. Now, if we are talking about romance in CC books and books in general... well, I would say my favorite pairing off CC'S books is Blackstairs. I believed their love scenes because they truly know each other for real. Emma and Julian literally broke themselves and found their way back to each other. But her other otps like Clace or Wessa or whatever... they are forced in some sense for they just love each other so easily and fast.
      Also, I didn't mean that people not liking Kierarktina is wrong or something like that. Like, you think they were undeveloped and that's valid. But I saw some comments that said they were weird or gross because they were three people loving each other which makes no sense in my opinion. I agree with you on Kitty though! They are going to love each other so much.

      Linda I agree! I also thought that since the faeries are clearly supposed to be a metaphor for real-world racism, then Christina moving to LA just because she‘s interested in faerie culture, then watching two faerie boys make out when they don’t know she’s there, then somehow dating both of them (even tho her and Kieran had no chemistry??) was extremely fetishy and somehow no one’s mentioned it at all. Like I know Cassandra Clare’s books in general have been catering more and more to gay fetishizers, but to have that and a racial fetish all in one poorly written package? I hated it honestly, and I also don’t consider myself close-minded, even tho people treat everyone who dislikes this ship as if they are

    cassie focusing sm on clace in qoaad & then giving them TDAs epilogue plus LM'S epilogue. like...couldn't they have at least ended they're own series? or maybe even an intro w kitty into TWP?... i used to love clace but their so over used & bland at this point. even the malec wedding could've been in TEC as much as i loved them it could've been done better in TEC. Tmi characters had an entire series, extra novellas, appreances in every book, all bigger than TDAs series yet...she focused on praising them throughout the entire book rather than focus current characters. then cassie used thule as an out to bring back evil jace & to revive the clace storyline going into yet ANOTHER new series, TWP.. like..? im not usually salty but im so salty that I'll still have to read them as mains in a whole ass new series skskak. its as if she was so stuck on tmi/clace characters that she didn't even properly develop TDA storylines and rushed them. kiertina was forced bc the lack of chemistry/development to readers, so it was like "ok youre dating cool ig?"
    the parabatai curse definitely needed more explaining, repercussions and development and THAT bothered me as much as tmi/clace having such big roles. they deserved soo much better than being robbed of a proper conclusion to their story. so when i re-read qoaad i cant help but get annoyed by the unnecessary TMI povs/storylines when that all could've easily been the page time to help explain and add TDA parts. Tmi storylines bothered me more than all of thule bc at least in thule it gave julian a chance to grieve. although thule was mainly about bringing back clace too smh lol. im honestly dreading clace being a big part of TWP and im almost certain she'll give them a bigger role than blackstairs and kierarktina which is so laughable at this point. haline was also wasted being the only w/w relationship it was...weak. and the fact that there'll be 10 TLH shortstories & ANOTHER clace gotsm novella is just-like really? lmao she even gave diana & diego shorter povs than clace & malec when she could've made their storylines stronger. this all lowkey turns me off of TSC/her writing. TDA fans were so robbed im laughing and crying at the same time. the characters of TDA are amazing, the author & her co writers just didn't seem to appreciate them enough

    I totally agree about the ending being pretty anticlimactic. I guess it didn’t bother me all that much because the Emma/Julian stuff was always my least favourite part of the series tbh, I never really cared that much about what happened with their relationship. Like I love them and I love their relationships with everyone else, but I wasnt really all that bothered about how their story resolved as long as everyone else was happy tbh 🤷🏼‍♀️
    I have to disagree about Kieran mark and Christina though. I thought their relationship was really well developed because throughout the entire series there were little character moments where their bond grows and I honestly didn’t really think it would happen and it made me so happy that the three of them ended up together. I can’t really think of any other example where I’ve seen a properly explored and healthy poly relationship and it made my heart very very happy to read about.
    Like that one part, I can’t remember the quote and I can’t find it but basically they were talking about how Christina helps the two of them connect better emotionally and helps Kieran understand marks human side, and Mark helps Christina relate to Kieran because she struggled a bit with that earlier on, and basically all three of them work so well as a unit because they all bring out something in the other two that made them all better. I honestly cried reading that part because I just loved it so much and love those three so much.

    I feel like I really like qoaad, but Los is still my favourite in the series. Tbh this might be my least favourite of Cassie’s series (which may be an unpopular opinion), just because I wasn’t as invested in the characters and the romances. The only characters I really loved were the younger ones, who weren’t really even mains since they’re getting their own trilogy. And also Mark, but I feel his personal growth was greatly overshadowed by his romance plot unfortunately. I still loved this series and it definitely has many positives though. Tbh I was hoping that either Julian or Emma would die or get stripped of their marks, but I know that Cassie’s endings are pretty happy usually.

    The three-way dating thing is from a handful of people who don't like love triangles and say "why not just be poly" but most people don't enjoy that dynamic so it comes off as a disappointing cop-out. It's not backed up by what readers buy and enjoy, just some people trying to pretend they're woke somehow online by justifying polygamy. Authors really need discernment when deciding whether to listen to reader input or not.

      The Dark Artifices is the title of the series. We find out in this book that The Dark Artifices is another name for The Black Volume of the Dead. The Black Volume of the Dead is the driving force behind this entire series. Every single antagonist either owned it, or was fighting over it. Ty's subplot in this book was also massively tied up with The Dark Artifices.
      The Queen of Air and Darkness is Annabel. Annabel instigated the events of this book, and killing her was Julian and Emma's driving motivation. So much so that Horace uses an illusion to bring her back to freak them out. She is also on the cover of the book.

    I finished the book last night, so some info is still fresh in my mind. “It is said the only thing that can break the Parabatai bond is death, or having one of the people turn into a vampire, or that stripping your marks and becoming a mundane.” (Page 595) So when Emma got stabbed by Zara, I thought oh shit, she’s going to die and then the bond will break and then somehow she’ll come back. But I guess she never died, it was the heavenly fire that burned the marks off and broke the bond. As for Livvy, I believe Magnus told Ty that her ghost is tied to him. So she is stuck. I also was sad when we didn’t get closure with Ty and Kit, hopefully a novella will come out or potentially another series to explore that. 😭 There’s so much that can be explored with Kit living with Tessa and Jem and the new baby. Also Ty wanting to attend the Scholomance, and the possibility that something bad could happen to him because he did the spell, and dark magic is hardly forgiving. This book was a five stars for sure! I love this series and I love these characters! I want to see more of them (the Blackthorns and co.) Hopefully we’ll see them pop up again, just like we’ve seen Clace and co and Jem and Tessa pop up in this series. I’m going to miss the Blackthorns, Emma, Christina, Mark, and Kiernan. 😍😍

    I feel like as a finale this is Cassandra Clare’s weakest. Clockwork Princess was wrapped up nicely and even though Emma and Julian were introduced in CoHF the questions we had were still resolved. But in this one I felt like rather than giving a satisfying ending Clare decided to set up stuff for the Wicked Powers with there being turmoil between Kit and Ty and Livvy’s ghost not really being explained. I like that we get more series within this world, but I wish she’d concentrate on wrapping up the series she’s already started instead of dropping plot points and problems in a finale where things are supposed to be resolved.

    I agree that the ending with the "true nephilim" was pretty rocky. It would've been a good full-circle moment if somewhere either earlier in TDA or mentioned in one of the previous series, that true Nephilim existed. But still, it's never explained how it relates to the parabatai bond, or how it works in the history with Jonathan Shadowhunter and all that...
    One thing that really took me out of the story were Kit and Ty's scenes. They seemed very choppy, and I felt like reading them was ultimately useless because I knew they weren't going to be able to bring Livvy back. I love them as characters, and I understand their motivations for what they did, and I know it's probably all a setup for TWP. And I loved the scene at the end by the lake where Kit tries to stop Ty from completing the spell. But their story seemed like it dragged out too much, and a lot of their scenes were the same thing over and over again.
    Ultimately, I enjoyed the book and I also gave it 5 stars because the book gave me lots of feelings, but it wasn't perfect by any means. Sorry for the rambling comment!
