As a Southerner: The “horseshoes and hand grenades” expression means that you can’t almost do something. You either do it, or you don’t. In horseshoes you get points for almost hitting the mark, and when throwing a hand grenade you don’t have to hit dead on to do some damage. So “almost” only applies to those two situations. Example:
“I almost got an A on my math test”.
“Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades”
~Translation: Even though you were close to an A, you still didn’t get an A, so we aren’t going to act like it’s the same as an A

At first I was wondering when this book was written because I was thinking Vince Gill hasn't really done anything since the 90s. So I looked him up and he put out an album last year...who knew...along with a few other albums in the 2010s, but I haven't really listened to country since the 90s/early 2000s.
"horseshoes and hand grenades" is actually a common expression where I live that describes something that's close but not quite accurate, like "close but no cigar" basically. but then again I live in Texas so
And the reason that "close only counts" in those instances is even if you're not accurate, like you don't get the horseshoe around the post, you can still get points, and if you don't exactly hit your target with a grenade, well you're still going to cause damage.
We say both of those phrases a lot in Nebraska as well!

- horseshoes: it’s a game. basically you and another person take turns throwing horseshoes at pegs in the ground and your score/the amount of points each toss is determined based on how close to the peg you get.
- hand grenades: shit blows up. you don’t have to hit your target. you just have to land close to it.

What does that even mean tho?! What does saying almost have to do with grenades??
@@PunkHime89 essentially saying "almost" or "close" doesn't count. With horseshoes you have to hit the target exactly or else it doesn't count, but if you're playing with hand grenades, close works because then it hits the target even if it doesn't hit it exactly.
That's what I've hypothesized as a person whose grandmother uses the term all the time.
Edit: for those who might not know, there is a game called horseshoes where there's a short rod or pole sticking from the ground and you have to throw horseshoes around the rod, which is the target I'm referring to.
