- One of the most progressive facts about Judaism is that the Torah and the religious texts around our holy scripture encourage sex. That makes Judaism one of the few sex-positive religions in the world! In some religions, sex is purely for procreation. In Judaism, you're commanded to have sex for pleasure on certain occasions AND are required to feel attraction. We're required to have sex and pleasure our partners a certain number of times per month depending on our jobs. We're even required to use birth control at times! How can a religion that is famously regarded as ancient and isolating in nature be so liberal with their intimate acts?
Sex therapist Claire Perelman brings this taboo subject to the religious forefront. On this episode of Bad Jew, Claire teaches host Chaz Volk about our requirements and teachings revolving around this devious subject matter. Chaz takes this episode a step further by challenging Claire's personal juxtaposition on this to see what can be gained from traditional lifestyle choices that most don't live by.

I grew up in Los Angeles, committing my teenage years to going to as many concerts in Hollywood as physically possible. I spent the next eight years soaking in the sun, studying, and working in San Diego. After completing my Masters in Social Work, I moved to the Bay Area and have been here ever since! Personally, relationships (of all kinds!) have always been the source of my greatest pleasure and my greatest heartbreak, which led me to become a Sex Therapist. I believe that life is built on relationships and connection to others, and I want to help you navigate all of the complexities that life offers - because I have been (and continue to be) there, too.
I offer couples therapy, individual therapy, and therapy with teens and adolescents both remotely and in person. I can meet for in-person therapy sessions both in San Francisco and in Oakland. One of the most powerful connections we can form is with our therapists, and I am honored to be able to witness the totality of the courage, strength, pain, and complexity that each person brings into my office.

Reform means you make G-d into your own image. Your needs are more important than what G-d has intended. Look around there is decline in respect and this where reform is responsible for.
Reform or not, it's said in dueteronomy 24:5, exodus 21:10, the Mishneh Torah and the Peninei halakhah. Speaking of decline in respect, I'm happy to have a conversation with you but you can't go pointing fingers without asking some questions first.

circumcision has nothing to do with sex. for Jews it's a tradition but in general it's done for health reasons

A large majority of most circumcisions around the world are performed out of parental desire to conform with one tradition or another.
If circumcised = healthier, why is it that in the first world, only two nations circumcise a majority of their boys for reasons having nothing to do with faith or tradition: South Korea and... the USA?
The "health" reasons for circumcision were debunked by Edward Wallerstein's 1980 monograph. The first world nation with the highest rates of STDs is the USA. That nation is tied with Portugal for the highest rate of HIV+.
With all due respect, no parent or hospital performs circumcision thinking about the future sex life of the person. And the penis, while a sex organ, performs other functions other than sex. It's a personal choice and/or a choice based on tradition and/or health. The study you mentioned is legit, however, there are undeniably other credible studies that say the opposite and have proven the health benefits of circumcision. For example, multiple studies point to how it's easier to clean and less likely to collect waste. (sources include National Institute of Health, John Hopkins Medicine, and Harvard TH Chan School of Health).
At the end of the day, there's nothing wrong with it and as no Jew will ever tell you what to do with your sex organs, I don't care much for you attempting to invalidate our participation in tradition and health practices; and what to do with my organs simply because I'm Jewish.@@lylecosmopolite
There is a great deal that is wrong with bris. For starters, the lack of informed consent (always) and of effective anesthesia (in most cases).
I have been told by Americans of both genders that my foreskin makes me an inferior sexual partner. At the time of these conversations, I was still a virgin and these Americans had never been intimate with an intact male. Hence there is no way these derogatory opinions could have been evidence-based.
All nations that used to circumcise for "health" reasons have given up the practice ... except the USA.
The sources you quote are not free of American biases about how the penis should look and function, and of American silence about circumcision's negative effects on sexual health and function. And what about the Orthodox infant boys who died of herpes transmitted by their mohel? Parents who will not name the mohel who is responsible for the herpes-caused death or permanent brain damage of their infant son?
