Watchmakers often "blue" their screws by heating them in brass filings. It does essentially what you're doing here but the heat is more even, so you don't get those horrible burnt spots. It's perhaps something to look into if you try this again.
Na mate, we do everything here wrong

You can make the back clear using an extremely fine wire brush, it polishes it so much it becomes a mirror
Clear and mirror are two totally different things though, what are you on about?
@@TheGauges420 Clear as in not clouded
@@wesleywood8353 ah, I get it now, but then he probably should have used the word clearer instead, as clear is a descriptive term for something being see-through, whereas mirror means quite the opposite, and reflects everything. But yeah that makes sense now that you mention it.
@@TheGauges420 r/imverysmart
@@TheGauges420 Bro everyone uses the term mirror finish. Clear would be something I say for something transparent. As this is a giant piece of non-transparent metal you can't really make it clear but buff it to a mirror finish.
I love worn items. As a kid I enjoyed getting toys from markets and seeing the scratches and small dents knowing how much it was played with and loved before passing it on
I love that you fix fragile & delicate iPods but also a dirty old Falcon panelvan. True blue Aussie m8

@@TDJDriftersBoss if the commenter is from the US panel van doesn't mean ute because we don't have utes in the US.
@Tara Miller Moving trucks, vans, pickup trucks, SUVs. The the US did at one point 60s-70s-80s have some Utes (stuff like the Chevy El Camino and Ford Ranchero) but they weren't super popular so ultimately were discontinued.
If you want to blue the back effectively, if you get a container of some form and fill it with brass shavings, then heat everything from below with a flame, it should blue much more evenly with little warpage

No seriously where are the SOMEONE’s BEEN IN HERE! stickers?
Instead of fire, I'd recommend anodizing it with electricity. You'll be able to prevent the warping from uneven heating and you can look up charts for what voltage and times give you what colour.

@@shokonishimiya5722 good idea, it's a good investment
I got a black 5.5th gen Video with a bunch of mods ... and as cool as it is ... it’s never quite like that classic thick white iPod look that I’ve always remembered. I think the 3rd gen looks weird and the 2nd and 1st gen with FireWire only are way too old to be useful nowadays. I’m looking into getting a white 4th gen 20gb with all the fun mods like Rockbox, 512gb sd card, mega extended battery, and Bluetooth transmitter. That should last me a long while and have enough space as an extra backup drive.
I personally own a 30 dollars chinese 3 inch mp3. Quite lovely tbh, bring it with me wherever I go.

I reckon micromesh could sort out the back panel, never seen the metal version used but with acrylics it creates a mirror level polish
I just came from another video of yours. Keep up the great work!
ORIOLESFan02 I did _not_ get this right the first time around...
you can make the oxide discolourations on stainless way more effectively with salty water and electricity. the outcome isn't as random but you can really get some amazing rainbow effects by doing it this way
Love this weird channel, ol’ mate!

I got a pretty nice looking finish on my back cover by removing the dock connector shroud and ribbon cables so it was just bare metal, and then scrubbing it with scotchbrite under running water. Small circles moving around the whole case, onto the sides and corners, gives a nice brushed finish. You could also do straight lines, but that's tough to make look good
I genuinenly have zero clue about iPods and not particularly a care for them either. But I stumbled across one of your videos and you are so funny and entertaining mate. Cheers for your being and your videos. Tons of love from Germany
You should try anodizing some cases to make a custom colored iPod case.
Its really not too difficult and not too expensive to do.
Thanks for another great video man! Your channel has inspired me to have a go at iPod modding myself, I've got my first classic coming in the mail as we speak :D

yes. you start
A few ideas. Dawn dish soap works well, magic clean eraser is amazing (great results almost 100% of the time, high grit sandpaper, store brand car polishing fluid, gently rubbing a file and if you used all of these ideas then finish it off with a microfiber cloth. I really recommend that you use all of these.
0:29 in the reflection you can see a potato
Been watching you a bunch recently, I dug out my box of 30 or so ipods (mostly 3rd gen) to finally get around to mod work again! Just finished a battery replacement & flash storage mod on a 4th gen u2 and it turned out great!
I do acid etching for aluminum enclosures & copper PCBs pretty regularly & plan on doing some for an ipod or two pretty soon. (should look really cool on the anodized minis) The only thing I'm not sure I can pull off is getting the resist material consistently on curved edges. I would love to get the green patina that is on brass/copper (i have grown it on cymbals before) but I don't think aluminum or steel grow any interesting colors. (maybe electroplating first?)
etch a haitch pea and a geir icon on the back of your mini, i dare you
I use a drill buffer like for car paint with silver polish like the stuff used for fancy plates and stuff. It works really well
Been watching all your videos and I just wanted to say that what could have been the reason for the warpage is how you cooled it off. If you leave it on its own to air cool then gravity would probably pull the hot metal back flat. I dunno i'm probably wrong, but I just figured that would have been something to try, if you even care these days. Anyway, cheers on the great content.
When you say I ___ my iPod, you actually mean doing dumb stuff to an old mp3 player that I bought on eBay with ten others for only like fifty bucks.
The thumbnail said that there was for involved. But is it scarlet fire?
this comment is too smart to not be recognised
Sir you are quite the intriguing individual, I can't help but watch your videos. Ever since the shrekpod
I'd love to turn the HP backs blue. They'd look so good.
I think the other method of coloring steel and titanium, electrolysis, would probably work a lot better.

Me, an intellectual: *H A I T C H P E A*
I did it! I subbed to Dank Pods.
Polywatch works surprisingly well for improving the look of the metal backs. It won't remove all the scratches, but it'll make it nice and reflective rather than cloudy. I imagine other plastic polishes would work too.
U used blue magic metal polish on my back case with a Dremel and it worked pretty well. make sure you go in a cross hatch pattern when polishing. if you only polish in one direction with the rotary tool it will give you that cloudiness from certain angles.
Bro had my lol’ing hard 😂😂 2:49 “oh she opens easy”

What I use on the back is *autosol metal polish* , it's a paste and you spread it out and rub it with a microfiber cloth heard it's very good
Plz see this
That's pretty cool, actually.
Like the idea of how headers change colour.
To do that properly you need a piece of metal that fills it entirely and put it in a hot enough oven

If you want a more consistent and brighter blue, I would suggest trying to first make the back as polished and clean as possible (any contaminants will muddy the blue, try distilled water). Then have a tray of fine, clean brass shavings and dig the case in the shavings so all edges are touching the brass. Apply the heat from underneath the tray slowly and evenly (moving the torch). Do not heat it up too fast, the farther away you are with the heat, the more control you have. Once it's at blue, you don't have to quench it, just take the back out of the heated tray of brass. hope this helps
I think electrolyzing works on stainless as well which would give you the same effect but give you more control over where the colors go

I love how you do all this iPod modification on your iPad.
I know this was a while ago but if you're up for another potentially even more dangerous experiment you could try to do DIY aluminium anodising to get a nice colour and practically scratch-proof back case! It involves various acids, lye, and passing an electrical current through a tub of electrolyte but can be done at home if you're careful
