Watchmakers often "blue" their screws by heating them in brass filings. It does essentially what you're doing here but the heat is more even, so you don't get those horrible burnt spots. It's perhaps something to look into if you try this again.

I think the 3rd gen looks weird and the 2nd and 1st gen with FireWire only are way too old to be useful nowadays. I’m looking into getting a white 4th gen 20gb with all the fun mods like Rockbox, 512gb sd card, mega extended battery, and Bluetooth transmitter. I do acid etching for aluminum enclosures & copper PCBs pretty regularly & plan on doing some for an ipod or two pretty soon. (should look really cool on the anodized minis) The only thing I'm not sure I can pull off is getting the resist material consistently on curved edges. I would love to get the green patina that is on brass/copper (i have grown it on cymbals before) but I don't think aluminum or steel grow any interesting colors. (maybe electroplating first?)

U used blue magic metal polish on my back case with a Dremel and it worked pretty well. make sure you go in a cross hatch pattern when polishing. if you only polish in one direction with the rotary tool it will give you that cloudiness from certain angles.

What I use on the back is *autosol metal polish* , it's a paste and you spread it out and rub it with a microfiber cloth heard it's very good

To do that properly you need a piece of metal that fills it entirely and put it in a hot enough oven

If you want a more consistent and brighter blue, I would suggest trying to first make the back as polished and clean as possible (any contaminants will muddy the blue, try distilled water). Then have a tray of fine, clean brass shavings and dig the case in the shavings so all edges are touching the brass. Apply the heat from underneath the tray slowly and evenly (moving the torch). Do not heat it up too fast, the farther away you are with the heat, the more control you have. Once it's at blue, you don't have to quench it, just take the back out of the heated tray of brass. hope this helps

I think electrolyzing works on stainless as well which would give you the same effect but give you more control over where the colors go

I know this was a while ago but if you're up for another potentially even more dangerous experiment you could try to do DIY aluminium anodising to get a nice colour and practically scratch-proof back case! It involves various acids, lye, and passing an electrical current through a tub of electrolyte but can be done at home if you're careful
