Video games very often have ATROCIOUS timelines. In this video I use several examples to teach you how to make the worst video game timeline possible.

Umm just a quick tip: try to be slower with your thoughts. I'm fine with this speed but a lot of people are off put by this level of speed between sentences and pace of the video

*Make sure to give the main character way to much variation so you have no idea who they are*

@@man-ku1pc Exactly so you have no idea if they are or if they aren’t.
It's also important to never give said main character, or any of the characters in general, any form of development, arcs, personality, or depth of any form.
Particularly, the main antagonist who caused the entire serious of tragic events in your timeline should never be given any sort of clear motivation for doing so. Oh, and all of his victims should be reduced to nothing but a number and a list of names. Their dreams, struggles, thoughts, former lives, and current lives should never be shown at all in any way, nor should their deaths have any impact on their families, the workers of the establishment, the general public, the owner of the establishment, or even the murderer themself. In fact, it's best to not to introduce half of those things to the story at all.
Yeah I know that was a bit much but this has been frustrating me for a long time so I'm gonna take any opportunity I can to talk about it.
17:52 This is so true. I think too many people forget that Scott is writing this story as be goes along and is only human. Especially in games after pizza sim, there are so many hurdles and loops to jump through to draw any conclusions on the narrative. Just playing the game and coming up with your own ideas isnt enough anymore.
I like to treat any FNAF game after Pizza Sim as its own thing, disconnected from the games before it. And I think Scott now also understands this, and quickly replaced Afton with the Mimic, which I think is a much better choice
I mean he did say the first games were finished after Pizza Simulator & UCN, so it would probably be more productive for people tee the new games as having their own timeline. Most of the confusion about FNAF is people trying to force different iterations of the story together when they were never intended to be the same.
Except UCN tho. It’s like a capstone for pizza sim.

That's why I'm here
As some one who has reluctantly looked way far into FNaF stuff in that past years I can tell you that FNaF's early timeline being as nuanced as it is wasn't just because Scott wanted to make more games after FNaF 3 just for the money.
In Scott's own words FNaF 3 was supposed to be the last game in the franchise, but after the game came out the reception was somewhat mixed, and Scott looked at FNaF 3 as a product, realized he wasn't happy with it and made FNaF 4 to better end off the series.
Something you also slightly touched on was FNaF 4 being a narrative mess in terms of the modern understanding of the lore; the reason being for that is at some after the time of FNaF 4's release Mat Pat put out a video of the infamous "Dream Theory" which FULLY recontextualized the contents of the first 3 games before it as the nightmares of the Bite of '83 kid. The theory was pretty sound for the time and it was the majority agreed upon story of FNaF; that the whole thing was just the bite victim's nightmares after being bitten, but guess what, people absolutely hated it.
Scott ,then again, not happy with the product of the previous game made Sister Location which, again, FULLY recontextulized FNaF 4 to no longer be a dream and to be the weird experimentation stuff you see in Sister Location. The problem with Sister Location, however, is that Scott never gave a clear answer to when it was built or when gameplay takes place. Sure there was hints towards it, but never anything you could use definitely, and now Sister Location is just this weird non-Euclidian fluid where no matter where you put it into the early timeline you have some sort of a problem.
As annoying as it is it just makes since when you listen to some of Scott's, interviews especially the one with Dawko. As everyone probably knows, and as you said in your video, FNaF was never supposed to grow into the multimedia juggernaut it is today, and as a consequence of this the early games in the franchise don't really have that much actual usable theory fodder which makes it harder than it needs to be to make a timeline because you don't have as much information as you would initially think, and everything you could possibly use has either already been used or is just another loose thread until a future game or book recontexulizes it.

Don't forget this extra step: Make sure that it's impossible to figure out which parts of the franchise are canon and/or actually happened in the story. To give FNAF as an example:
Is the FNAF 4 that we are playing through nightmares being had after the fact, or something taking place in reality? Are the Halloween DLCs canon? Is FNAF World canon? Was it canon or was it retconned into irrelevance after the fact? Is the stuff found hidden in the AR mobile game canon? Are the different endings of Security Breach canon or were all but one of them comics that the SB main character drew? Are the books canon to the game timeline, are they an allegory for stuff that happened in the game timeline, OR are they not canon altogether? Are different book series at different levels of canonicity? Are the very games that we play actually canon to the events of the story or did we play the in-universe games that Fazbear Entertainment produced to manipulate their public perception?
The answer to all of these questions is a solid: IDK LOL.

@@Hariburger I mean people are literally confused because they try to make their own headcanons and assumptions fit into the timeline rather than accept that we don't know some things. It's amazing how much simpler the story is when you accept there are different timelines and don't try to force several different book series into it.

about kingdom hearts, just saying, the timeline discourse for it is useless because what matters is just the order of how the games are released, since that's how the story is meant to be experienced. so kingdom hearts has the simplest line of storytelling out of whatever series youre talking about in the video, it's just go in release order, so its a straightforward line. doing the joke you were making is like if you introduce someone to a series by starting at chapter 10 of volume 8 of a book series, its inevitably misleading and confusing, especially when viewers who dont know kh hear these kinda stuff. now if we're really doing the timeline thing, it's still not that complicated. starts with the kh x content, so the movie and the game, then it's the upcoming missing link, then dark road, then birth by sleep, then kh1 with 0.2 in the background, then chain of memories and kh days around the same time, then kh2->recoded->dream drop distance->kh3 and dlc->melody of memory. still very linear besides a couple of games which happen around the same time. very simple, its just a long series

To correct a misconception; No, the Zelda timeline wasn't slapped together at it's official release. There was always an internal order. Wind Waker, however, caused the 3 timelines in the first place, so that was the critical flaw. That, and four swords adventure was just kind of... fucked.
I used to think I was insane for telling my entire story in my head before I even thought about putting shit on paper.
Thanks to you, I can rest assured knowing that my timeline will probably make more sense than fnaf's timeline.

Reminds me of Earth Defense Force 5/6. A convoluted time line and story is last thing you would expect from a game about blowing up giant insects and aliens with assortment of weapons from small arms to cruise missiles to orbital lasers to giant robots. It makes Helldiver 2 almost feel tamed.

Yes, he did say they all take place at the end of all three but he ALSO said he wanted us, the fans to choose what WE believe is the end. We are Link, what we did as the player leds up to whatever we chose.
Of course Dark Souls has no timeline, Gwyn fucked it up by keeping the flame alive which led to time and space being twisted and warped.

What to avoid when making a complicated timeline without being too complicated
1. creating a timeline because you didn't expect the content to be very popular, this can cause writers to quickly make a timeline that can be inconsistent. While some stories are still good when they are accidentally successful, it's not uncommon for those accidental success to have bad stories
2. constantly pumping out spin-offs and sequels and pushing the timeline to the side, this can cause many inconsistencies for the timeline
3. Being way too cryptic, while being cryptic is ok, being over cryptic can makes many people confused, for example, not explaining what time the game takes place, only knowing story details by item descriptions, and forcing the player to do constant analysis to figure out why something is happening and how
4. adding to many characters, especially stuff like clones. Some examples being characters with very similar names, clones, many identities for one person, etc. All in all, it's not a good idea to make it hard to know what characters are which in discussions
5. Having an insane creative head... that's it
6. changing the timeline for no reason, such as being in a corner or getting bored. This could cause inconsistency and confusion
7. doing all the previous entries combined
