- This is another review and comparison of Harbor Freight swivel flex head ratchets this time in 3/8". These types of ratchets are very handy along with traditional Flex heads and this instance the icon is much higher quality but it is over double the price so it's tough to justify compared to the proven Pittsburgh Pro

I literally love my Pittsburgh Pro 1/4 roto head ratchet. Use it much more often than my Snap-On dual 80 flex head 1/4.
I never knew how great this style of ratchet was! I now might buy the snap-on version in 3/8.
Yep I bought the Pittsburgh pro for under dash work, now I like the design.
I've had both, the Icon is as good as the Snap-On.
Olsa Tools makes a nice 90 tooth swivel head ratchet as well. Their 3 piece set is relatively cheap especially compared to Snap On.

I am a fan of roto heads and they have become my go to ratchet for all of the benefits you clearly described. I have a Kobalt that looks very similar to the Icon you have in your video. My other is a VIM which is the only type (as far as I know) that has a locking feature and a T handle feature. Very nice. I can see getting the Icon Roto if you can get one of the 20% coupons to work. Nice job.
Thanks so much for all of your informative videos! Didn't realize all of the differences between a swivel head & flex head. I have a flex head but find it awkward to use most of the time. Am definitely going to pick up a set of the Pittsburgh Pro swivel heads. I am a woman with small hands so definitely appreciate the comfort grips...for so many years I used socket wrenches with no grip...what a difference! I know many folks don't like the grips because they get covered with oil, but that's not an issue for me. Anyway, thanks for confirming what I suspected...that the Pittsburgh Pro are of excellent quality & are most likely the better value. 😸👍

I have the green handle Pittsburgh Pro Swivel Head ratchets in 1/4" & 3/8" (I use the 1/4" more often), I bought them about a year or so ago and are holding up well. Only drawback the head is a bit large, the pear head swivel ratchet fits into tighter spaces better so it depends on the situation. The Pittsburgh Pro & Icon both have lifetime warranties. Although I've never experienced returning one yet.
I bought the Icon one in 1/4 drive and absolutely love it, it works great especially when im using it as a driver for screws. I've only used it for few days so I can't attest to the quality but so far it seems great.
I bought the pittsburg pro 1/4" and I'm MAINTENANCE mechanic by trade. So far it also gets the seal approval although I must admit the design is stolen from Snap-On and the snap-on remains supreme (which it better at it's significantly higher price!).
Just bought the 1/2 and 3/8 icon one just today looking forward for having the full collection of icon tools

I was a bit reluctant on purchasing the Icon ratchets, and my gut proved to be right as they had the recall, but handled the situation quite well.
I did purchase the Icon 6-19mm "flank drive" wrenches and the regular 20-24mm wrenches, along with the 3/8" metric shallow and deep well sockets. Ive been using them daily since they were available to me at my local HF.
Again I really appreciate and enjoy these videos.
I own both the 1/2 and 3/8 Pittsburgh pro ratchets you have here and as you alluded to at videos end I got both for the price of the one icon ratchet. I have used these ratchets extensively and they are built like tanks..no issues at all with them. As a woman I also prefer the Pittsburgh Pro handles. Very comfy for smaller hands. There's not enough difference in the two brands to justify such a higher price for the Icon.
These are great. I bought the 1/4” icon version and it’s become my go-to 1/4.

I have all 3 of the Pittsburgh roto-heads. I immediately replaced the grips with screwdriver handles to facilitate spinning. They are the first ratchets I reach for if space isn't an issue.

I just grabbed a set of Pittsburg Pro comfort grips (sku 61255) so I could have small, medium and large versions of the same handle for cheap.

I have both styles of these ratchets, and I find I use the roto-head ratchets much more versitile and use them a lot more..I have owned the flex-heads longer, and find I rarely use them..they usually frustrate me more than help me..the aformentioned pushing away from the fastener and wobbling off it...head too long and clearance issues..many others seem to love them, mine mostly sit in the drawer..the pivot point swivel allows more centering and and allows more control and even pressure to keep the socket on the fastener, if that makes any sense...
To reduce and possibly prevent ratchet damage.
I purchased 3 very tough Icon breaker bars.
I also purchased the Icon wobble extension set.
My newer Kobalt 90 Tooth ratchets should last a long time.
Glad they actually greased these… I opened up one of my Pittsburgh Pro ratchets (3/8’s flex head comfort grip, ya know the ones before the Icon’s came out) and the damn thing was dry as a bone! 😡
This was an excellent review and tutorial. I have the ICON swivel head and it has a great feel. It was the first swivel head ratchet I've ever owned but I'm very surprised on the unique uses a swivel had has over a traditional head. I do have a few ICON videos, but they are not reviews nor what you would expect. thanks for the video.
I got two Carlyle swivel head ratchets, both quarter and 3/8ths, and a Pittsburgh 1/2 inch. They all have not failed me. Got the Carlyles for Christmas a few years ago and got a Pittsburgh to complete it off and have a unusual mismatch set. The Carlyles are crazy expensive, the half inch is $86.99 (now on sale), compared to the $20.00 of the Pittsburgh
I just visited our local HF and I spent quite a bit of time carefully examining the Icon and the Pittsburgh ratchets and wrenches. My take? The Icons appear to be MARGINALLY nicer but not by much! Strictly my opinion but I could see ZERO reasons to pay a lot more for the ever so slight differences. Never thought I would say this but HF has come a LONG way from their old days of offering crude tools where the ONLY advantage was price! They had a very poor inventory of Icon ratchets with most of the stock numbers not in stock. This could be a flop for them given the minuscule differences between Icon and the Pittsburgh Pro line! Catus has it right!
Its funny because I only discovered HF recently and from what I see so far their tools are just as good as most Taiwanese made brands. I personally don't mind spending more for higher quality but otherwise I would have no problem with HF brands. Recently, I got their wheel bearing kits by Maddox. Some tools just aren't worth spending tons of money on them.
I love this style ratchet and have both the 1/4 & 3/8 Pittsburgh Pro. They look and work great with HF colored coded sockets.

@@herbwag6456 2 main reasons: A: the color coating scratches off easily and looks tacky in short order (moderate use) and B: the side wall on these tend to be a bit thicker than a quality name brand socket which in certain situations can be a clearance issue and prevent you from using the socket. (my opinions/findings) cheers

I set up a “track pack” a couple years ago. I wanted tools that I didn’t care too much about to take to the races, I use it nowhere else. The ratchet in the Pittsburgh kit was the worst in the world. I replaced it with that same Pittsburgh pro ratchet. I like it so much, I am gonna get another for the shop.

Great explanation between the two. I'm stumped on whether to get Craftsman or Icon 3/8 swivel head ratchet. Both are in stock at stores where I live.
Can't go wrong with either.. I still have a nostalgic love for my Craftsman, but the Icon stuff is really good too.

The Pittsburgh Pro are 72 teeth while the Icon is 90 teeth, but for me the icon wasn't worth the extra cost being "slightly better". You can buy 2 PP ratchets for the price of one icon. I did have a failure out of the packaging with 1/4 PP ratchet where the direction switch would occasionally free wheel. The 3/8 version was fine bought at the same time. I will have a new video showing the failure in the future on my channel.
you just have to open it and apply grease. it will fix that
Brand new, I should not have to open it up and grease anything, but quality control is not what it used to be.

I had all three of the Pittsburgh Pro Swivel head ratchets, 1/4", 3/8", and the 1/2" drives. I liked them a lot and became my go to ratchets. However, I pulled the trigger and got the Icons on the same drives. I like them better than the Pittsburgh Pro. I especially like that fact that they are serviceable. I passed on the Pittsburgh Pro ones to my son and he loves them. Whichever brand you decide to get you won't be disappointed. I just put a lot of miles on my ratchets and like the serviceability of the Icon over the Pittsburgh.
With the $5 off coupon, the 3/8 Pro is $12.99. The current Icon with 10% off coupon is $35.99... 2.7X the cost of the Pro. For lubrication of the Pittsburgh Pro, I just leave the head in a cup of ATF overnight and then wipe off the excess. For me...the socket release feature of the Pro is more secure and more convenient to use than the simple ball detent socket retention on the Icon. I have used the 1/4 to 1/2 Pittsburgh Pro Roto Heads for the past four years with no issues. I bought the Icon Roto Head...tried it for two days and returned it.
The Pittsburgh Pro swivel-head ratchet is a hidden gem. At $20 for the 1/2" ratchet - with 72 teeth & about 13" long - it is remarkable value and an excellent primary or backup for any non-professional. I have owned one for 9 years, used it for many shade-tree repairs, and it still functions flawlessly. More proof? They are frequently sold out at any Harbor Freight store. Further note: Don't waste money on anything Icon. It's all marketing - not good enough for a pro & a waste of money for anyone else.
I've kinda been wanting to get one of these. But I've never had a problem getting my flex head into areas. One of the silliest ratchets I used was perfect for the situation. You twisted the handle and the head ratcheted. Been looking for a good name brand of that lol.
keshmo12 - Stanley sells the rotator ratchet at Walmart, or if you want a more “professional” brand you can get the Blackhawk version. Same ratchet, different rubber grip. Stanley Black & Decker owns both, in addition to Proto and MAC.
Lol, have that ratchet, yet never had a need for the twist handle ratchet mechanism.

Ya, I love the idea of the flex head but when I use them they don't feel great, but a roto head and fixed head feel perfect to me. I have many flex heads that I recently bought. I'm gonna try and use them more but the roto head been my go to for a long time.
I have all the Pitts pro sizes and the root 1/4 is my go to of that size. I dislike the short comfort feel of the Pitts. I might buy the 3/8 icon just for the handle.
I absolutely hate flex ratchets but these swivel heads look awesome to me.
I have the Tekton 1/4 and 3/8 rotohead ratchets and they are identical to the Pittsburgh. Right down to the design of the comfort grip. Except the tekton’s is red. I suspect tekton makes them for HF, but HF is a bit cheaper price.

I got one of the icon for $10 new in box at a pawn shop, and I like it alright.
Rebuildable not a big plus, if the Pittsburgh fails HF will give you another one no questions asked.

Rebuildable is pointless because HF doesn’t sell repair kits. I like the release button on the Pittsburgh Pro model because when I use the roto ratchet like a screwdriver the socket doesn’t come off.

The Tektons are the exact same as the Pittsburgh pro, just like the composite ratchets. Not sure about the gearwrench ones though.
Great video comparison, very informative. I tend to grab my Carlyle 1/4 drive 100 tooth roto head ratchet. They have replaceable ratchet mechanisms that is a big plus.
Why a big plus? Break either of the HF ratchets and just return them for a free replacement.
flick22601 some of my ratchet have sentimental value that has been pass down from my grandpa and father, and wouldn’t trade them for a new one. It’s a little part of them that bring back memories when I use the tools.
I have the ⅜ roto Icon and love it. So you spend $20 more for a better ratchet that you'll have for years. How much do you spend on beer?
I vote the olsa rotohead it's very nice and cheep ... also if you have the coin sk used to make one they are always on ebay drop a dt kit in that would then have to be the best roto head
I wound up with Icon for 1/4" and 3/8" and the Pittsburgh Pro for the 1/2" (I bought five, and gave the two smaller PPro ratchets to a buddy). Especially in the 1/4", the mechanism felt far better to me, and I really didn't like the oblong handle on the Pittsburghs. The Icon 1/4" has become one of my favorite ratchets overall (and it sits next to its Snap On cousin).

I never could get into the style and lack of length on the Pittsburgh Pro version. I went with the Gearwrench swivel-head for the length and the lower profile of the ratchet head. I like the Carlyle 100-tooth count version, I like the Carlyle tools I've bought and used, but, again, the Gearwrench has a lower profile. So, I sacrificed the 28 teeth for the better accessibility. I may get the Carlyle version anyway to go along with the 1/2" version I have.
I like the short handle on the Pittsburgh pro because it fits into tighter areas, great for under dash work.
@@andybub45 Titan tools as the World’s itty-bittiest 1/4” drive, 90-tooth, swivel-swivel head ratchet. O’Reilly Auto Parts has it for about $20 bucks. I’m a width of a gnat’s eyelash from getting one.
Dang. I spend more money on this channel than any other, except maybe the Den of Tools (that bear is very convincing). I think this is the third video in a row where you showed something I don't have, and I immediately got it. Although, in this case, I ordered the swivel head ratchets from Tekton, since I wanted a 1/4 (I couldn't find a Pittsburgh one of those) and a 3/8's and I wasn't willing to pay for the Icon logo. In my experience, Tekton's fit and finish is nearly as good as the high-end tools (and definitely better than Pittsburgh), and they aren't much more than Pittsburgh in price and have the same lifetime warranty.
The tekton swivel head ratchets are actually the exact same (different color handle) ratchets as the Pittsburgh pros...

@@hardlyb yeah they do. The composite ratchets are the same as tekton as well. That's not a bad thing though, they're pretty duty ratchets and dirt cheap.

@@rey3468 I'm happy with my Pittsburgh tools. I would have gone to HF for the swivel ratchets except I couldn't find anything but the 3/8 one the first time I looked, so I ordered them from Tekton. Slightly higher price, but the real downside is having to wait for delivery. (And I probably saved money ordering from Tekton as I can't recall the last time I went into HF and came out with just what I went in for.)
I have those Pittsburgh roto heads for about ten years I think. I never had to warranty one yet.
How does the back drag compare between the two? That's my only complaint about the Pitts Pro.
I went to HF, and my icon has a MUCH higher back drag. I think I’m going to open it up and check it out. Maybe it will break in?
@@taylorwhedon9486 I got the Icon because it can be opened up. It's pretty easy to bend the spring to to make the ratcheting much freer. Use a light oil or very small amount of grease to keep the internal parts from sticking. It works great!

too many comments, I know..but I must add..that ICON looked a lot like a Genius one I have when I first saw it..and when you took the mechanism out, it is a dead ringer for the one in the Genius...I believe the ICON may indeed be made by Genius, or the factory that makes Genius...
I believe both have lifetime warranties. So, if they were to break. Just take it in to HF, grab a new one.

Yours had grease in it from the factory? I purchased one of these and it didn’t really impress me for 90 tooth. I thought the dual 80 was smoother. Anyway, I popped mine open and it was dry as toast. Not even a hint of grease.
My theory is the fact that none of the icons came greased in the first shipment then they start having a lot of claims because the ratchets weren't working properly without Grease the 3/8 have the most claim so they decide to do a recall on those and then it seems the second round of tools they have been greasing
Dual80 is far superior, but these aren't bad when considering the price point.
You don't really need the grease. This isn't a hi speed wheel bearing.

This is a proper match up. I believe a lot of people only care about comparing ICON to the brand they usually buy: Pittsburgh Pro. I'm not seeing any reason to pay the greatly higher price of ICON over other HB brands. I think HB has missed the mark with ICON.
The reason will probably reveal itself over time.
..I feel the same sentiments concerning the ICON and the pricing..I like them and feel they are very good tools, but the price points are too high..I know HF is trying to go after Snap-On with these, and probably derived their price structure to reflect this..but they are NOT Snap-On..they are, in fact competitors for other high-end Taiwan made tools..Genius, Toptul, KT Pro, Napa Carlyle..maybe even Gearwrench(some of those have gone to China, though)..I rate the ICON close to the Napa Carlyle lineup in quality and fit and finish..the Carlyle tend to be a bit more expensive..thing is, though, Napa can get away with it because they are Napa..HF, however, is HF..and many people still view them as a place to buy budget-price tools, and expect budget prices..plus, ICON is not an established, well known, or long-running brand..pretty much a brand made up by HF (much like Craftsman was a brand made up by Sears)..now, if they could get the prices down, say 25%-35%..then I feel many more people would buy them-not as an alternative to Snap-On, but as an upgrade over what you can buy at Lowes, Home Depot, Autozone, O'Reilly's, etc...

Love this show watch it every day harbor freight has come a long way since I use to get them sears craftsman has gone way down the drain had a 1/4 inch set I got before I got sick want to leave it to my boy it was rusted what a way to get out of a warranty they won't even cover a socket if it breaks if it has rust on it junk my snap on sk and others I got 30 years ago no rust harbor freight way to go

I used a synthetic engine assembly lube from Red Line. It doesn't get sticky in cold weather like the heavier grease.
How do you think it stacks up to the other roto brands outside of Hf? I have many roto style and so far my two go to is a Pittsburgh pro and my favorite one being a Carlyle. I even prefer those two over my snap on lol.
Nevercouldfigureitout I love the Carlyle for its quick release, but use the snap on when it’s a tight spot so I don’t accidentally release the socket!!! Both excellent choices!!

I finally got an icon ratchet to test it out, I got that 3/8 swivel since the had no 3/8 flex head any more, I got mine for 13$ with some HF points and coupon, and.... I don't like it lol I'm still using it just to see how long it will last at the shop, but I still prefer my Pittsburgh professional flex heads, there's nothing mechanically wrong with it I just don't feel it as mine as my other ratchets xD weird sh!7 hu?
I don't always use a swivel head ratchet, but when I do it's a Wera Zyclop.
That is MOST INTERESTING! I want that Wera Zyclop myself, but the size of that head though...!!
@@AtimatikArmy I've got lots of ratchets, but only one brand of swivel heads (in three sizes). If you can afford it, try the Zyclop and you will be glad you did.
I really don't understand why pearheads are coveted so much more.
I love a good round head, can't beat SK and WRIGHT tool.
Even the old US made Stanley pro ratchets are strong and reliable.
The round head ratchets usually have a low tooth count, while this makes them more reliable, they don't work on modern vehicles with lots of tight spaces. And round heads are usually more bulky.
@@andybub45 yes but all my Wrights have much lighter tension then a lot of modern high tooth count pair heads and the head diameter is much smaller.
Many pearheads are also not much lower profile than a good roundhead either, gearwrench husky and Pittsburgh pro for example.
Remember that not everyone is working on modern cars.
I went ahead and purchased the Pittsburgh pro swivel heads.. so far so good... I think I heard you mention that Williams ratchets are essentially the same as the old Duralast?

So considering the rotohead ratchets the only issue is the Pittsburgh handles are short and I have large hands. But I can get the 1/4” and 3/8” for the price of one 1/4” Icon...any thoughts
I go for the Pittsburghs the difference between them and the icon is the fact that you cannot take apart the Pittsburgh but I believe they both have the same ratchet mechanism

I bought the ICON 3/8" drive because I needed a ratchet, and the Pittsburgh was out of stock. I'm not unhappy despite the price disparity. The lack of lubrication in both brand's isn't pleasing, and seem's to be a thing in all HF ratchets. The Pittsburgh Pro 1/2" drive ratchet I bought is dry too. Overall quality is impressive.
Bought a 3/8 Snap-on roto head ratchet 25 years ago and have used it regularly since. It's never needed to be rebuilt either. They are great and, yes, their applying torque directly above the fastener is why they work so well. This HF one does looks nice. But one can get the GearWrench set with both 1/4" and 3/8" on Amazon for $40 and they, at least from the outside, look to have the same designed head and switch as the venerable ol' Snap-on one. Unless HF comes down on the price of this 3/8" one by nearly half, I'd go with the GeraWrench set on Amazon...
The duralast ratchets are so convinient when they break thers a autozone walking distance from my house

Duralast aren't all that. I've been leaning towards HF brand's in recent years as the quality is improved exponentially. Where Craftsman, and some of the other comparable brands quality has tanked.

Despite the "Made in USA" labelling, it's all made in China. Snap-On, Blue-Point, too. Even Harley-Davidson at the end.

The Pittsburg professional ratchet has been awesome for me , done numerous jobs on a Maserati, Mercedes but I slowly started upgrading to Icon just because of the color haha. I had everything Pittsburg including breaker bars but now everything Icon.
I'd suspect the icon is an item one would consider for purchase by way of one of the special coupons ;-)
Buy Pittsburgh Pro and upgrade under replacement warranty to Icon if they stop selling comparable Pittsburgh products.
You can definitely tell a difference between 70 and 90+ tooth ratchets
Eh, build quality is more noticeable than the tooth count. My 90t kobalt ratchet has a bigger arc than my 72t wiha ratchet. 🤷🏻
I probably would have gotten the icon if it had 120 teeth but 90 is not really much difference.

Two days ago I was looking at the ratchets. I agree, the price. For the double the price, am I getting double the tool? People with snapon money, not going to be going to HF forthe tools. Icon is good price compare to S-O. If I think I can compare/buy S-O I\ll be looking at SK or other brands.
