    If you take the icon roto head ratchet, put a little red synthetic grease inside, run it in a drill or impact driver for a couple minutes, its as smooth as butter!! Feels like a whole different ratchet. Thats the problem with 99% of roto head ratchets, they have terrible back drag. Napa is straight trippin on carlyle tool prices. They are outrageous!! I actually really like roto head ratchets. They are usually my go to ratchets tbh.

      Napa branded junk isn’t worth those premiums.

    • @thingsmen
      @thingsmen  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Yea if you can pack some light grease or oil down in there then go for it. They usually don’t put enough in them anyway. Tooth count really does help with reducing that backdrag though.
      I go in phases with Rotos. I especially like them for a field bag or backup in a vehicle. Can really get you out of a tight pinch.

    I had a Carlyle 3/8 swivel head similar to that years ago. I bought it on sale back in about 2007. Somehow i lost it and i really miss it. I prefer chrome handle ratchets though. A lot of the rubber handles are too bulky for me

    For the longest time my go to ratchet was a Snap On FH747, 49 tooth roto head soft grip. Still use it a bunch but I have a little bit of everything to use, its still my favorite though. I have had it since 2008 and its had a head kit put in it a couple times but only as a preventive.

    I have the Koken 3776J. It’s really amazing. Has a thumbwheel on the topside. Silky smooth with respect to backdrag. It has 45 teeth, but Koken does such a good job of showing how tooth count is overblown. Has a large diameter pivot pin, too! Can be routinely had for sub $80.

    • @thingsmen
      @thingsmen  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks for sharing about the Koken. I haven’t tried it out but glad to hear about your experience. 45 teeth is low. Wonder how they overcome the backdrag In a roundhead design?

    • @drengskap
      @drengskap Před 5 měsíci +1

      I don't have a Koken roto-head, but I have several other Koken ratchets and yes, absolutely, Koken tooth counts are not comparable to other ratchets. I have a 36-tooth Koken ratchet, and it's one of the smoothest ratchets I own, easily the equivalent of 72-tooth or higher from other brands.

    • @thingsmen
      @thingsmen  Před 5 měsíci

      @@drengskap they have a patented 2 piece Paul design that allows for smooth operation in their standard ratchet but that technology would be different when incorporating into a round head. Whole different layout and design.

    • @drengskap
      @drengskap Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@thingsmen I have to admit that all the round head and roto-head ratchets I own have a lot more backdrag than the pearheads, it seems to be inherent to the design. Obviously roto-heads have their own advantages, though.

      @@thingsmen ya I have looked closely at the Matco, Cornwell and Mac, rotos and they are all basically just like that Carlye, except twice the price. Have the Olsa, works fine 4 the off time I need one. For $75 you are in Koken territory, and nothing Carlisle makes comes anywhere close. For $40 yeah would be tempted but not at that price. I think Carlisle are priced too high generally.
