I was once having coffee in Bar Italia when Mr. Nighy walked in, as he passed I whispered under my breath to my then Fifteen-year-old daughter .”He's a very good actor and a snappy dresser. As he was leaving he lent in between us and said “thank you for both of those compliments”.A man who truly understands the sometimes, always, never 3 -button rule
Top chap
Such a wonderful story! exactly the kind you hope to experience with him
This was the most honest I've EVER heard an actor of his caliber be. So good.
205th like.

As an actor myself, this is absolutely the real deal about acting. All the other stuff is just smoke and mirrors and bulshit.
@@IKESCREEK 100%. I still come back to this video a couple times a year to be reminded of that!
Can I please get "You don't like my squid? Live with it" on a shirt?
Haha oh yes please
LOL
You could literally make it. Just find a cool cat snazzy photograph of Bill and put it on a shirt with those words here XD www.customizedgirl.com/
He's pure class. Gorgeous soul.
not sure on his attitude within a marriage but he seems lovely from a friend perspective.
What a delight to hear his sane, no bs take on his profession. He’s impeccable.
His accent and his voice is so soothing.
10:04 “Remember that no one knows what’s going on in your head and they never will” Bill Nighy 🙌
👏
this is absolutely vital for young actors to hear. "You're giving the APPEARANCE of feeling something." for years, I let shitty drama teachers and the "feelings" destroy me. Because I was manipulated, as he says.
This man is the epitome of class.
"No one knows what's going on in your head" That line is so simple and yet so genius
He's just so honest and he appears to be a lovely gentleman.
you dont like my squid, well get along with it
Bill Nighy being full of swag
Imagine the vast amounts of shit hitting the fans of drama schools when students attend class and quote Bill on this. Love this guy.
Haha exactly.
Well that was quite refreshing
Plot twist, he's not talking about Davy Jones. He actually played an actual squid in a full animated movie
fuck off thats not true
he mentions meeting Johnny Depp while CGI'd up, though...
It’s a joke.
I really enjoyed listening to this old classy guy talk about being a squid.
"No one knows what's going on in your head and they never will" Brilliant!
Whether it's horror, drama or comedy, there is nothing I've ever seen him perform that didn't blow me away.
Bill Nighy is one of those character actors I still haven't learned to spot when he's on screen or catch by his voice. His approach causes him to just...vanish, and all he does is learn his lines. Brilliant.
He stole every scene he was in as Davy Jones lmao what r u talking about? Brilliant actor.
@@Vayne_Solidor I think you entirely missed OP's point.
Well put.
LOOOL he’s so blunt I love it
"You have to operate whilst your head is attacking you." I'm one second in and he already hit the nail on the head.
Just love that he comes out and says that nudity is not essential to the plot or to the truth of a piece. He admits it's exploitative. Good for him. Wish more actors would say this and we might not have so many actors (99% of which are female) being used in this way.
Heartily agree, thanks for the comment!
It does sell tickets. It probably isn’t within his range, he can act seductive but probably not sensual. If it is convincing on stage or film then there is nothing wrong with it. Don’t be a prude, just say it is not for you.
@@magnamarianneczagany8970
But he's right, it's not essential at all. Some of the best and most celebrated movies in history and even today don't have any nudity. If selling tickets is all it's good for, then it says a lot of about our society as a whole, in a very negative way. Also, he's appeared naked in movies and been the love interest in _many_ roles. What he's saying is, "If you're not comfortable, don't be bullied into it. It's not necessary."
It's absolutely true, but Love Actually would have been so much less without Bill's naked guitar scene. Hahahah.
@@magnamarianneczagany8970 it is not being prudish to point out that taking your clothes off lends absolutely nothing to art or to truth.
In the 1970s I remember seeing Bill Nighy at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre. The production was Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" and he pretended to be a heckler from the audience shouting about what rubbish the acting was. There was a bit of an argument and he was invited to come on stage to see if he could do any better. He went on stage, took the playbook and gave a great impression of a member of the public trying to read Shakespeare on stage for the first time. He was really convincing. We thought then he would go on to great things.
Wow - that's amazing!
Could listen to him all day long. Thanks for posting BAFTA.
My goodness, the thinking woman's actor. Talk about impressive. Someone I would LOVE to know.
Bill Nighy in The Worriker Trilogy is one of the best series ever
I love BN. So bloody honest.
After watching him in a film, I decided to google this actor and I'm glad I did. What a class act
Very sane and kind hearted talk . informative and inspiring
Davy Jones is hands down Bill's best performance on Earth.
Prithviraj Basu Rattlesnake jake?
Yeah, that too actually. Basically Bill's best performances are the villain ones.
Nah, Billy Mack, or Ray from Still Crazy are his best
Notes from a Scandal.
As "Viktor" from Underworld was his best specially the first one.
Just hearing Nighy reflect on his role in PotC makes me wonder how Dead Man's Chest would've played out if anyone else but him played Davy Jones
I have always enjoyed him as an actor and after listening to this interview I can only say RESPECT for his honesty.
His explanation of his mocap experience is world class and the funniest thing ive heard this month. This is excellent.
The way he acts is what makes his so unique and special. Easily one of my favourite actors.
What a great interview, how grounded is Bill. Love this so much. I quit theatre acting as my very first role i got the lead, and while I loved being on stage and performing this wonderful interesting role, the very first night nerves were HELLISH. I wanted to leave on the first train, run away, the only thing that stopped me was a handful of liquer chocolates and knowing the shame it would bring my family and the whole cast but I felt like a lamb to slaughter lmao I never wanted to go through that again, I thought something was wrong with me and I was not a natural!! Feels a huge weight off hearing a master of acting such as Bill say that is natural and normal. It's funny how nobody talks of it, and you assume everyone else didn't experience any of that. I love his honesty. What a great man! The stupid thing is once you're on set everything is great and you love every second. Isn't that weird.
I just watched an interview with Don Adams, who said that as a stand-up comedian, he was so nervous he often vomited before the show. I wondered why he would do it if it was that unpleasant. I was talking to some musicians at Julliard and they told me that it is now fairly standard practice to take drugs before a recital or performance. I think it was beta blockers. I've also heard a number of other famous actors admit that they NEVER got over their stage fright, and were just able to mask their nerves during the performance.
Could he be any sweeter, I love everything he does, and everything he says... Just like a breath of Spring..🍾🍾
Bill Nighy is such a nice man. Modest & very talented. I’ve seen him in London many times.
An amazingly honest man describing what it is to be an actor. l will go anywhere to see him. Truly he is on a level with all the greats, he just got there with a different method! Love
this man!
All of those acting schools can now close for good.
A wonderful man....Totally free of ego. A roll Model for us all
Or "role".
I just saw Bill in It's about Time, and I remembered how much I loved everything he has done. I love him even more having seen this. Thank you Bill.
I remember going to that with my (at the time girlfriend now wife) thinking it was going to be just another chick flick.
It rocked me to my very core Bill gave one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. I had never cried in a movie before.
It's a wholly amazing movie
very humble man
Whenever I see this chap, I see him as a Concorde Captain.
The best actor ! Who agree ?
I admire Nighy's work and this clip is definitely a compelling piece!
I love Bill Nighy as an actor, this interview shows what a lovely unassuming human being he is.
'Don't assume you have to take off your clothes,it has nothing to do with art. It's a budgetary concern.'Bill Nighy.
The best compliment I personally have to give Mr. Nighy is this: Sir, regardless of the character you portray, I BELIEVE you are that person without an instant of doubt. You sell truth and I will always buy.
What a mind blowing, phenomenal actor 👏!!! His part in "Underworld" as "Viktor" still gives me chills.
Finally I found this comment
He’s an asmr natural
Unbelievable actor
And such an addictive voice
I admire his technique for appearing to laugh: rhythmically raising and dropping the shoulders. Very convincing.
This has been by far the most helpful and inspiring interview with an actor about the craft I’ve seen. Absolutely so refreshing and a new confidence booster for me.
I hope your career is progressing well. Did you achieve what you wanted
Love this man love his voice could listen to him all day long
How refreshing - what a gentleman
What a wonderful talk.
As E.H.Gombridge said,
' There is no such think as art, .....only artists'.
His Charles Paris BBC radio plays are excellent. The character is a slightly cynical, jobbing actor. He's witty and incorrigible but above all there's that wonderful soothing voice of Bill Nighy! I could listen all day to him.
He is the perfect actor for that series. It’s like they wrote it for him.
Best radio performance ever.
This vid and there’s one Michael Caine did a long time ago. They are both AMAZING.
Met him in London, very cool 👌
Love his take on the business. Rational, straight forward and sane. Brilliant!
This is my process! Thank you sir for making acting sound a lot more simple and fun...
When will they caste Bill and Michael Palin as brothers? There has to be a wonderful film here.
Best, and most honest interview I have seen. Should be required viewing for all budding actors!!!
I really like Bill Nighy as he speaks such absolute COMMON SENSE and zero bull-shit. He is the absolute personification of the little boy in the emperor's new clothes who just rips away all made up phycological clap-trap about acting and is why is now one of the very few actors (and I am now 70) I want to watch and listen to if in a film. I only wish we had a world where more people were like him.
This guy is so underated
Always loved whatever movie he’s in
I could listen to him all night. He's fabulous in radio drama too. Charles Paris had me in hooked. So clever.
Wow, although I am neither interested in acting nor do I know who he is (was looking up Dupuytren contracture), but this has got to be one of my favorite clips on CZcams. His honesty, his truth just resonates through and through.
I'm assuming that you, like me, suffer from this. He handles it very well. In my case, it's mild - though I like the idea of having Viking blood.
I've always appreciated his performances. I've never seen an interview. Now I can say that I truly appreciate him as a professional and a person. This was a wonderful "interview?".
He is so wonderful... love him! 💗
Always been a fan of Bill. Love these video's they cut through to the essence of the thing, and Bill just seems to get how to cut through all that BS...Thanks! As do the other actors and directors I've seen throughout this series.
love this guy.. all the way from Chicago..
What I like about this actor is that even when he's not acting, it looks like he's acting
lmao "the squid" 😂😂😂😂
What kind and supportive words.
SO, SO SO valuable and genuine. Deeply grateful for this interview.
This is SO freakin' helpful!!! And thank you for the absolution from the terror of performing.
Favorite video on Acting ive seen thus far.
OMG, he really is Billy Mack from "Love Actually"!
He makes the roles his own. Those are my favourite actors.
I love the nitty gritty truth.
I can't help, but I'm always so happy when I see him on screen. I love this actor so much.
This guy is a fantastic actor. Top notch! Really enjoy
Watching his stuff.
I like! Keep it up!
It's really amazing listening to you sir. The most important thing to learn Is "give respect to fellow actors". thankyou for sharing such an amazing experience.
Such a legend!
Very honest, he is talented I wished he won the Oscar also. Intelligent and honest. So true about all the PR the new actors are doing , ugh
What a real guy. Refreshing. He seems to be personally free. He has good thoughts to consider.
Like Olivier said to Hoffman in behind the scenes of Marathon man., 'My dear boy, why don't you just act!' Bill is a natural and his advice is gold.
Ah, Bill Nighy, my favourite actor for so many reasons and now here's another -- the guy is honest. The best of qualities.
Thanks so much for posting.
With no idea how I navigated to this clip, I have to say it is an epiphany. Such clear-headed truth. And now I recall seeing this actor in a number of movies. Bill Nighy, you are a new hero for the simple act of telling calm and reasoned truths. So rare anymore in the age of dips hit, dumb ass influencers and half-wit actors and performers.
Viktor!
This man is so refreshing. 🥰
Underrated actor imo
One of my favorite actors, I watch anything he's in
I love Bill's voice! So warm and smooth. He's a pleasure to listen to.
He is _still_ one of my favorite actors. He's epic.
So refreshing. Wonderful.
Bill Nighy, one of the great actors in film! Loved him as “Viktor” in the Underworld saga!
Who needs a process or needs to get into character when the talent is so awesome and intuitive?! And a master of perfect timing....One of the greats. EVer. Thank you ♥️Bill for so very many characters you have had us swoon for....👌🏽🙏🏽🇿🇦
It’s cool that the same sentiments is echoed by Adam Driver, in that it’s not his job to feel anything, it’s the audience who he’s trying to make feel emotions
I just love him! He is absolutely brilliant.
