I ended up ordering Fisch FSA-134572 Wave Cutter Forstner Bit, 20mm x 8mm drill bit for $23.70, since I ordered a replacement and it was going to take a while before I received it. I'm glad I did. Hi Dennis,
    You are so right about the cable sticking in the dovetail system. What I did was created (3d printed) some dovetail plugs with a little chamfer that fit at the edge of the workbench so the cable would not stick again. Only downside is that the more slots the more plugs, but I found out that if u 'plug' one side of the workbench it will be fine most of the time. U can slide the clamps from the other side and still remove the plugs if needed.....keep up the nice video's, always watching them,
    Cheers,
    Peter

    Great video on the parf system and your new bench, Dennis, thanks.
    I think the MK II version is well worth the extra cost for the upgrades you get. All the additional pieces and changes allow for more accuracy and less wear on the parts, so the system will last much longer, if not indefinitely aside from the 3mm and 20mm drill bits, though I suspect even those will last through a pretty good amount of MDF tops. As for the rulers, they added additional holes for offsetting holes at 32 or 48mm. It's a great system and I'm very impressed with it.
    I already have the MK II parf guide and the 1000mm flat parf fence. I have some other ujk accessories on the way from axminster as well. Looking forward to setting up my shop made mft.

    Yes it's a budget for this tool/jig.
    I don't really understand who are the customers for this.
    Professionals will buy a foldable Festool workbench MFT straight.
    I've done mine with the rag'n bone method for the cost of good auger drill bit but after 2 years of use, I will not bore all these holes again but just on a smaller part of the workbench.
    The debris and dust management may be also a pain.

      @HookedonWood  Před rokem +1

      I often say in my videos that I like dog holes in my workbench, and for most of the accessories you do not need a accurate grid of dog holes. So, just drill holes of 20mm will give you already a lot of possibilities. I think the professional is one market if they want to change the MFT top them selfs.
      But the hobbyist woodworker may also be a market. I never thought I would buy it 5 a 6 years ago. Now, I think it is fully worth the money.

    Have you ever used a track saw rail hinge on a workbench?
    I've seen those used in combination with a dog hole fence to not only create an amazingly flexible workbench but it also allows you to use a track saw as a semi table saw with accurate repeatable cuts without having to set up any guides.

    Tip for others:
    When I did my workbench top with the UJK Parf Guide system, I first drilled the 3mm holes, then used a large drill bit to enlarge as many as I could, and only then used the 20mm Forstner bit. Even though that was an additional step, it was much quicker since the Forstner bit didn't have to go through so much material (I have a ~1.5inch top).
    Only thing to keep in mind that you don't drill the holes that you need for the guide rail initially to go to the next set of holes.
    Also, thanks Dennis for all the time and effort you put into the videos. They are high quality and people appreciate your content.
    I've built (95% done) my version of your version of the 4th gen workbench and really like the design. I also think - if you get the chance - spend some time for putting (updated) plans on your website. Even just a PDF with measurements would be great. I know people would pay (some) for it and it may would make worth your effort.

  • @Tensquaremetreworkshop

    Define accurate. Due to the multiple transfer of reference points (ask a machinist if this is not clear) accuracy degrades with the PARF system across the grid. Using a template (CNC cut, and ideally at least half the size of your table) is better, because-
    - it is more accurate
    -it is faster
    -it is cheaper
    Using a template with a trim router takes around half the time to give a more accurate result in my experience. I have measured both methods using gauge blocks (accurate to nanometers) and the results are clear.
    BTW, using terms like 'perfect', 'spot on', etc makes an engineer wince. Everything has tolerances. Understanding tolerances is the key to accuracy.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před rokem

      I do not make my videos for engineers, so perfect means perfect in the average sense. That said, there is a reason why I talk about near CNC. Because it is not perfect in that sense. The second methode you mention "can" be accurate. Because that also depends on several things in the proces. If you want to use a CNC template half the size of the table, you better make te complete table CNC. That is most accurate. So, it think mainly because of the system design it is more flexible to use in other situations as well. They did a lot to minimize human error and deviation by using very well engineered products with very small tolerances.
      So, that is what my message is in this review. I think an alternative can be as good, perhaps even better, but I discussed the PARF system here. In the end, I think we are not so far apart from each other. But the angle we look at this product and I made my review about this product is just a little bit different.

    • @Tensquaremetreworkshop
      @Tensquaremetreworkshop Před rokem

      @@HookedonWood Yes, you did say 'near CNC', which is a good clarifier. I say half size, because that just involves just one translation, with widely spaced alignment dowels (used in the engineering sense). Yes, whole table size is better, but not much in practice, because wood (especially MDF) moves with RH in a non-deterministic way, negating attempts at too high an accuracy.
      Using 3mm drills through a guide bush hand held in a hole in a ruler has several error components- the narrow jig guiding a forstner bit via plain bearings has several more. Because the jig is 'walked' across the table, errors are cumulative- especially as the reference dowels are only 192mm (two holes) apart. I refrain from doing a full error analysis- the manufacturer knows and agrees on the above (the designer appears not to...) I think your review is reasonably balanced; I would just compare it with the cheaper, faster, and more accurate alternative.

  • @filmevoncosima
    @filmevoncosima Před 11 měsíci

    though I really appreciate how well constructed an made this system is, I honestly think buying a CNC made mdf plate is the better solution. It is at least as accurate (in fact I believe it to be more precise...) and far cheaper. And when you have bought one you can easily make a copy with your router, so you don't have to buy another plate when the original one is worn out, and btw that is faster done and easier than the process with the UJK system

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 11 měsíci

      If possible, that is the best choice. But this is flexible, you can make the number of holes you want and use it anytime you want.
      But there is a reason I say near CNC because there are still some small variables that can exist. But I do not think a CNC cut sheet is widely available, especially for a good price.

      @HookedonWood  Před rokem

      Hi, I am curious what you made!, this is an expansive tool, and it took me long before I decided to buy one myself. But it is a well engineered product and they push the boundaries to make it as accurate as possible. That is what I like about it. But I agree, it is a lot of money and you will have to make three table tops to be even when you let it cut CNC.

    Hi Dennis, thanks for another excellent video.
    I have one question on the table top if you can answer. I found (i'm in Italy) this material "PANNELLO (MDF) VALCHROMAT" which seems good

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před rokem

      I use two sheets of material. 1x 19mm Black MDF and 1x 19mm underpayment. This gives more mass and less vibration when working on it. So I found this very nice to work with. So, I think the thicker the better but it does not have to be Black MDF because I think the 30mm will be very expensive. Keep in mond that with thicker top, you can not use rail guide clamps. Bit there are enough alternatives

    • @oc_geek337

  • @bothorsen4292
    @bothorsen4292 Před rokem

    I think what's missing is a description of the alternative. How much is a CNC cut workbench top? If you can make (for example) 5 for the price of the Parf guide + 5 sheets, then maybe it's a bad investment. If a CNC cut top is the same price as the Parf guide system, then it's probably best to get the system.
    It would be great if you could get a couple of quotes and see what the price would be. I'm going to do that myself, when I start building a workbench. Which is hopefully soon, the room is almost done :)
    And while I'm writing anyway, thanks a lot for all your reviews. There are definitely some tools in your list of china tools that will be bought for my new workshop.

    Nice explanation of the Parf Guide systems, Dennis. I also made a large work surface using the Parf 2 and it worked perfectly with very accurate holes over the 2 x 1.2 meter top. I also used the guide to make a smaller top for my Felder 300 cart - that cart is hands-down is the best purchase I've made in a long time. I would recommend the combination reamer / chamfer tool from UJK for finishing the holes. It works well in conjunction with the UJK dogs and they'll sit flush in the bench top after reaming. I used a standard chamfer / countersink bit in a different top and it works OK but not as consistent as the UJK version.

      No, it isn't. I have measured the results of the Parf system, using engineering measuring equipment, accurate to nanometers. It is nowhere near as accurate as P Parfitt claims. Ask Axminster tools, and they will agree on the limitations of the system, including the accumulating errors the system suffers. A well tuned home CNC mill (never mind professional systems) can exceed the accuracy with ease. And a template is also much faster and cheaper.

      A topic worth expanding on. By the looks of it , the black MDF is Valchromat, in the UK costs about £150 per sheet, plus delivery. It is considerably tougher than regular MDF. Axminster tools MFT tops and some jigs use this material. I have not used this material yet, but having created MFT work tops in ply and in my pine work bench, and some smaller jigs in MDF, I find holes in regular timber using the parf UKJ jig variable in fit, no doubt grain and wood movement is at play. Ply holes are consistent, I went for a double thickness of 3/4 ". A single thickness (18mm) of standard MDF is I feel a temporary sacrificial solution, especially if if clamping dogs are used, which rely on racking to maintain hold down pressure.

    What really makes your projects stand out for the most part is the black top, which is pretty much impossible to get here in the USA unless you want to spend a small fortune getting a sheet shipped. This not something that can be found locally or even ordered locally. Once you take away the black top...you really take away the visual appeal of the projects. But the craftsmanship and attention to detail is the same and its still good work. The visual appeal is just not repeatable....not in the USA anyway. This is perfect. I've been working on a new workbench but your idea of using a Felder is brilliant. I just looked them up and the Felder FAT 300 is affordable and they have a distributor in Australia (for some reason, you have to contact to get a quote but the US site shows the prices and the FAT 300 is affordable for me).
    The doghole system looks ideal too so I'm adding that to my shopping list.
    Years ago, I saw a video on YT showing retractable dogholes. Never found anything suitable to make them with (best I could do was experiment with various push button type of setups but they just don't give the needed depth). If you come across anything like that for dogholes, please let me know.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před rokem

      Hi Gary, Felder comes from a professional corner and searches for contact with the customer. So, they are not always communicating the price. The Fat 300 is smaller, although it can handle the same weight. So, for a workbench of 80 x 160 I think it will work, but otherwise, it will be too small in my view. Another point is that the lifting mechanism is at the short site, whereas it is on the longer side with the 300S. So, when your table does have too much overhang, it is hard to operate it. For stability as a workbench, you have to remove the wheels. There is too much flex in the wheels. So, keep that in mind.
