This movie was the most viewed (in theaters) finnish movie for 30+ years, about 700k people saw it at cinemas. I guess it's a generational movie that holds a place in memories for many people. And Vesku Loiri was a very popular performer for decades.

A classic comdedy. When I was serving in the finnish military in 2006 this was shown on the bus on our first weekend leave. I later heard it is some sort of tradition to show this movie to new conscripts.

They sang nursery rhymes as they marched. That tradition is still valid.
The idea behind it is that everyone has to be super serious while singing.

As I noted earlier, Uuno is very creative and industrious when it comes to figuring out ways to slack off.

oh, I just remembered a lesser-known Finnish movie: Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning (2005). It's essentially a parody of Star Trek and Babylon 5, with English subtitles (although some of the jokes may get lost in translation and cultural references)
What's unique about the movie is that it was released under a Creative Commons license on CZcams, so downloading and sharing it is legal.
Another unique aspect is that the movie's budget was around 13,500 euros, yet it look better than those in Hollywood movies from the same era

IIRC, Uuno's father in-law who is a wealthy businessman knows the Defense Minister personally. These connections get him special treatment. More hilarity ensues with Uuno being invited to the officers' mess.

Uuno in army is definitely my favorite Uuno movie although these days it is no longer that accurate since a lot of things have changed. Obviously some things in it were never accurate eg. conscripts never can become above sergeant rank while in service (they can become 2nd lieutenant after service) but in movie Uuno goes way past that. But that is the fun part also that it is not that serious which is also kind of accurate to real life military. We go there to learn to defend the country but at the same time it is kind of experience that many will remember their lives.

  • @finnishculturalchannel

Finland has a long military farce tradition starting from 1921, so naturally Uuno had to go to army too. Finding an example of those movies with English subtitles is difficult, but here's a trailer of one without them: "Sotapojan heilat (1958) Trailer". Latest military farces made were the five Vääpeli Körmy (Sergeant Major Körmy) movies: "Vääpeli Körmy näin kranaatteja kuuluu käyttää". The character Körmy made also a cameo appearance in one of the Uuno movies. This Finland's military theme entry won silver rose in the Montreux Golden Rose Festival in 1984: "The VPK-Group presents: The Military Might of Independent Finland". There are some actual Finnish military videos available for viewing: "gona beach 2/09 party boys".

This is the pinnacle in the franchise, this and Uuno Epsanjassa. There are more jokes, the pacing is better, they don't have to fill time to make it a full length feature, the jokes are better but there is a good explanation to it: it is "fish out of water" movie, the juxtaposing between rigid army and loose Uuno creates so many conflicts that you don't need to look for them. Easier to write comedy when you got extremes to play with. Same trope is what Police Academy uses, and also why it starts to suck as the series moved away from obvious source of conflict to... more and more unbelievable kind. With Uuno, there is only so much you can do in civil life, him trying to navigate society and having complicated relationship with the rigid and rich father-in-law, so putting him in the army or in Spain gives the obvious and extreme source of conflict.
Fish out of water stories work in comedy but it is also a cheap, lazy way to do it for way too many. Here Spede and the team is at their best, the series takes a nosedive after Uuno Epsanjassa, that movie itself already has plenty of red flags, the pacing is at times quite.. it brings unwanted cringe when things don't move along and jokes are still ongoing while the laughter has already died. Dialogue editing has always been the pain in Spede productions, along with very, very varying quality in the comedy.
When he had trouble getting grants from government arts funding, there is a real reason: technically they are not very good movies, sound editing sucks, has weird gaps in audio, editing is haphazard, director is clearly not very talented but just about passable, camera work is ok at least but there was always more signs of quick cash grab than art, so forcing Spede to finance the movies i think worked the best for everyone. They are what they are, not very good quality but in a nice way, endearing in their crappiness with some decent quality comedy here and there, some are even excellent.. while most are "meh". For Finns, there is more nostalgia than anything else, we have all seen them as kids and at young age.. damn, they work REALLY well. You don't give a crap about some film school chair analysists bullshit at that age but anarchist protagonist that is dirty, missing teeth and always into shenanigans.. . So there is emotional connection, they were replayed over and over again, you WILL see at least some of them when you are between 8-12, guaranteed. Well, at least it used to be that before internet but i can bet that it is still the same... They have a charm that appeals to that age kids, specially boys.
