      Here lies also hidden a very minor and significant joke about the names used, which can be understood only if one knows the culture.
      The name “Pena” is an urban pet name for Pentti and conveys the very friendly relationship they guys in the cabinet have.
      But we do that with top politicians we like. In 1956-81 our president’s first name was Urho, but everyone knows who we are talking about if we use the pet name Urkki. After him we got Mauno Koivisto, who was just Manu etc.

    A satirical magazine called Pahkasika appeared in Finland a long time ago. They stopped publishing the magazine because the reality was in no way different from the magazine's satire. The same is often the case with politics these days, it is difficult to produce satire.

    • @sepposuomenniemi6575
      @sepposuomenniemi6575 Před měsícem +3

      In Pahkasika magazine there was a satire about real tv -programs. It was in the 90s and there was a dancing program running in tv. They mocked the program, how people didn't have to go dancing themselves, they could just watch it on tv. They made up many real tv shows, like Driving a car -tv show, Family arguing -tv show etc. And the worst of the wors, the ultimate bottom was Let's watch the telly -tv show, a show about people watching the telly.
      Does it sound familiar, maybe "Sohvaperunat" they call it... And also this video, a man watching tv and reacting to it. We have come a long way.

    Excellent satire. I don't think this is a stab at any particular minister, but we have had a few bad ministers, also Prime Ministers, the past decades. The first who comes to mind is Finland's first female Prime Minister Anneli Jäätteenmäki, who was prime minister for only 2 months in 2003 before she had to resign (apparently Elizabeth Truss in the UK wasn't any better in 2022). Jäätteenmäki was then elected to the EU parliament and stayed there as an MEP for 15 years.

    There was a finnish political satire animated show called Itsevaltiaat (The Autocrats) one of the episodes was made for internatinational film festival and was voice acted completely in English. Its in 2 part on CZcams it called The Autocrats Operation ECS.

    • @JiihaaS
      @JiihaaS Před 2 měsíci +11

      To be precise the show was called "Itse valtiaat" with a space, which changes the literal meaning to "the rulers themselves". But you're right, it's also a play on the word itsevaltiaat, which would indeed mean "the autocrats".

    • @sboinkthelegday3892
      @sboinkthelegday3892 Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@JiihaaS Then in English it would probably be "Themselves the Rulers", because it retains that double meaning of "self-appointed". It's a similar thing actually with "The House of Cards", because in that context "card" also means like a Mark of a con man. Basically "card" means a fool.

    Kummeli was in the 90's. This is a good piece of commentary about corruption and power.
    However, I genuinely like Jukka Lindström's political satire. He has had three series by far: Noin viikon uutiset (The news of about a week), Jukka Lindströmin sivuhistoria (J. L's page history) and Kovan viikon ilta (Evening of a hard week). I am not sure if there are pieces of these with English subtitles on CZcams. But worth a check.

  • @Yupppi
    @Yupppi Před 27 dny

    I fully agree on how difficult it is to make political satire shows anymore. People can't tell if you're joking or if it's just news. Which is why the shows that make jokes about news are pretty good. Shows a bit like the one you have with Richard Ayoade being hilarious with a couple of other people forming teams. We used to have Uutisvuoto with quite clever regular members even when they switched the members later. Then there was Hyvät ja huonot uutiset. And some others I believe later.
    Oh one all time favourite of people by Kummeli must be Speedy and Saku, the heavy metal guys. They're just hilarious in how raw and pretty much idiots they are (but love music though). You can't imagine how many times I've been laughed at by family for playing guitar in a metal band back in the day, long hair and all, due to Speedy and Saku.
    Alongside Kummeli there was Studio Julmahuvi which was actually a rather big group of actors, many of them known in other productions later. It was more planned and in a sense more intelligent but also a bit more difficult humour to get into. Like some of the sketches require understanding the reference for example on the style of what they're imitating. But it has one of those really odd (but for that reason hilarious) sketches that is a documentary "The Last Wanderers" or whatever it'd be translated, where a researcher studies the Helsinki trams as if they were some rare animals. Then they had a sketch like muksuluuri which is a parody of children's show with a crazy host. And everyone old enough remembers Z-Salamapartio which was like a 70's detective story on some hippie revolution plans. It had killer soundtrack, they even released it separately.
    And the third one, the holy trinity of 90's Finnish comedy, was Vintiöt. Also successful actors and it had a bit of a bridging role between Kummeli and Julmahuvi. It was very basic humour like Kummeli, but slightly more creative and imaginary scenes. They had a classic sketch Tervasaaren kesäteatteri, summer amateur theatre sort of hit n run style, a teacher telling on someone's kid to the parents, the boxers who swear they haven't done any steroids, hundkarusellen - a swedish dog themed show, the prisoners and their jailer and the list goes on.
    Later there was Pulkkinen that was more like duo show, but it has some brilliant stuff like radio show host Osmo, an entertainer singing Ruusulaulu (Viihdetaiteilija), this really neurotic opthalmologist/copy machine responsible (I never quite figured out what he actually was, Kopiovastaava is the name usually titled to him), habitual criminal (Taparikollinen) and probably the best of them all: Piispa who has the nastiest mouth you could think of, giving tips to a priest who visits him before some ceremonies.

    Usually politicians aren't that incompetent on interviews nowadays, but there are quite some anecdotes, some which I have happened to witness myself as a Finn.
    I was having a beer or two in a pub near Finnish Parliament roughly a year ago. Suddenly a significant portion of the Green parliamentary group, and some MPs who had lost their seat on previous elections came around, and sat on tables next to mine. I decided that well, this is going to get interesting, I'll sit for a while listening.
    And yes, it was interesting, one of the outgoing MPs was suggesting to find a way to use budget funds allocated to war veterans (all of whom are well over 90 now) in her personal support, and nobody really reacted to it in any way... and I had listened only for two hours! Sure it could have been a joke of sorts, but exactly a joke of a sort which Greens themself would gladly see topple governments they don't approve.
    I also had to remind a caretaker government minister not to leave her bag unattended on separate table in the pub in this occasion. Like, yeah, politicians are only humans, but maybe they should try at least a bit considering that they're paid pretty well for it!

Jostain kumman syyystä, ehken juurikin näiden sketsisarjojen (Uunoturhapurojen aikoinaan) saaman suosion vuoksi kuvitellaan ettei millään ole mitään väliä, kunhan yritetään ratsastaa sillä telkkarissa saadulla suosiolla, sen enempää miettimättä leffan käsikirjoitusta tai sen toteutusta. Spede teki aikoinaan aluksi pelkästään eri sketsipätkien yhdistämistä jonkinlaiseksi elokuvan tapaiseksi. Kummeli erehtyi samaan. Kenties, ehken sekin osataan pilata toteutuksessaan....!?

      When alternatively you may censor the fact that "n-word" is open dialogue about DOMESTIC forced labor, being treated like Slavs "deserve" to be treated in American worldview. So they USED that word on the Africans. Only calling them by their skin color was more offesive than skinning them.

    Finnish politics is very opaque and decision making is not open at all compared to the UK. Finnish politicians love their cabinets and hate open discussion. This is why this show hits home.

      Not really. I really can’t remember anyone who had said the truth out plainly about any shady or stupid deals and decisions.

    Don't get alarmed with the racial slurs, our country was a bit different back in the day. Like for example the ''N-word'' was an official term taught in schools back at 1960's. This was because these southern people were introduced to us for the first time in 1952 during olympics ( lol i know) So we went to the Swedish people to ask who these new comers were. Thus this word became official.

    Before woke this was considered as funny. Yes it's inappropriate but it was/were satire and no one got hurt while filming. 😅

    Hello from Finland. This is very old tv program. These days we are wiser and this kind of racism would be unheard of.

      Well, yeah. He is an idiot. Reminds me of republicans in the US. It is all for the big business and millionares and nothing for the "commoners". Well guess what Orphan (that really is his name, Orpo) the commoners will have a say on the matter. By election in 4 years or if push comes to shove a general strike.

    You seem to totally miss the whole point here. ”Is there any politcians like that?” They are all like that everywhere and the joke here is, if they all would tell the truth like this prime minister here.
