Very true. Personally I’m 19 and work as a full time vinyl wrapper. And just working around these cars on a daily basis is awesome. You get to experience every single tiny detail of every car you get to work on.
I'm 20 and I started working with a Porsche Customer Racing team back when I was 18 as a Data Engineer. And I still do it to this day. Perfect start in the industry

@@JavTheRipper no kidding. A regular car isn't designed for mechanical convenience. I'd love to see a full tear down of an F1 with a master tech where ease of replacement was high up on the priority list. No talking or exposition on the car, just a dude working like any other day of the week.

This is just like me. I'm 18 and have been working on a Porsche race team for the last two years and it's been a blast. Great first job that I love going to every day. It's also been on Vinwiki (Thanks Randy Pobst!).

@@darkskinwhite I am very thankful for the opportunity I have but money has nothing to do with it. I met my boss about half a decade ago. I wrote a letter to him asking to tour the facility and began going to see the crew at race weekends at our local Porsche Club Events to see him and the team as much as I could. I networked with the right people and showed that I had the skills to be a part of the team when the opportunity arose which lead to me getting my current position. I don't have anyone in my family that is a customer of the team or even owns a Porsche. Just goes to show that if you meet the right people and show how your skills can benefit them, you can find yourself in great places. It's what you know AND who you know. That's the key to successful networking.
I work at a dealership, started as a porter now im a site leader. Its super worth it.. being around cars and getting paid for moving them.
The only thing is at the end of the day.

As a person who has worked at a dealer for 5 years as a porter/detailer and a father Who is in the aviation business I can fully attest to mechanics showing up at 8am not doing any work until about 10ish, going to lunch at 11:50ish and then coming back around 1 then leaving for the day at 4:30.

Kind of reminds me of myself. When I started working at Brabus HQ I couldn’t believe it. The cars you see and drive and the insight you get into the supercar industry and the people you meet is just incredible!
I got a job at age 17 working at Ferrari of Austin. Sales and Marketing internship which led to a part time gig throughout the rest of high school. Absolutely incredible experience as a young automotive enthusiast. Many fun stories.

I'm currently working my first job as a detailer for a Lincoln dealership and I was able to relate to almost everything in these stories. Really, if you're an enthusiast and you're looking for a job where you get to drive and experience cars and the industry, detailing for a dealership is the best way to go.
I detailed with a boutique detail shop when I was 16. It was pretty awesome, got to work on some really nice cars. Then I detailed for a Saturn dealership, good pay but the cars were trash. Eventually ended up with a group of guys who bought high end cars from auctions and shipped them wherever they went. Was able to detail and drive some cool cars, Evo Mr, lingenfelter z06, bunch of amg cars. Multiple m cars, Ferraris, lambos, audis. It was fun.

Lot attendant is better IMO, less detailing, more moving cars & errands for staff (which means you get to leave the lot more)

In 2012 I got a job at Penske Automotive Group for their dealerships in North Scottsdale. The job was taking photos of cars, getting the technical information, and upload them to the website. So it was 6 hours of photographing cars and 2 hours behind the computer. We had a set format for everything so you could photograph up to 30 cars a day.
Day One: trainer says well lets go get the Lamborghini and photograph it. Immediately puts my in the car and says this is the best way to learn. I was blown away. Overall the job was awesome. I worked my way up very quickly to being the photographer for all their high line dealers (Lambo, Ferrari, Rolls, Aston, Bentley, Bugatti). The high line cars required more work then just your basic Audi or BMW. It was great getting to take a Ferrari or whatnot for about 30 minutes or so and really get to learn it while photographing it. I was later featured on The Chive for having a pretty cool job.
I was later hired at Ferrari of Seattle to head their photography department, but life took a different direction.
6 years before the iPhone absolutely blew my mind. I remember have the Nextel’s i730 sidekick all those phones before the modern smart phone.
Tmobile advertised the sidekick everywhere too, it was even midnight club LA.

I thought the first time I booked a Ferrari I was gonna be thrilled. It wasn't a nightmare by any means, but all my little girl dreams didnt neccessary come true.
It really depends on the car. A California T isn’t gonna give you the same thrill as 430 Scud 🤷🏼♂️

As my profile photo above is me in a 430, owner did insist I drive it , drive was fun, low setting car trying to work on cleaning low and not having a lift, that is for a much younger person than myself.

Honestly I don't understand the supercar hype and never truly have.
I'm not hating on anyone who does love them, different strokes, but, I just can't get into supercars.
Yes some are beautiful, impressive, but I never have looked at them and said; "I want that".
I find that driving them is typically another EXP too.
I find that older supercars are more fun to drive than modern ones due to older ones being more street practical and more familiar feeling but they're still less ideal.
I think the reason some people love them is because it was their poster car, but for me, my ideal poster car (never did have a poster) was 60's muscle car's and 90's Japanese cars.
I'd rather drive an old Japanese 90's car or an old 1960's Muscle car (or even some modern sports cars) before a supercar.
I don't think it's the perfect job per say, but his passion as a car guy that for him he was able to get so close to the cars he fancied and could enjoy and appreciate them in that manner on that job.

I worked at Ferrari of Central Florida when I was 18 in 2000-2001 and it was the best first job ever! I remember plenty of great stories and remember Russ very well. Russ drove 175 mph in that F40 LM on a city street with me in the passenger seat and he put out a FIRE in our 360 challenge car when we were racing in Sebring with Ryan Hunter-Reay as our co driver. No end to the stories of working there!
I am really happy for this guy! Not only it´s just absolutely awesome to be around these cars all day long, but also because i´m in a similiar situation right now. Starting a job as engineering intern at a major german oem next week and could not be happier!

This man was let in a dealership after closing with multiple F40's when he clearly wasn't going to buy one, and got a job offer. Yet when I visited my local Ferrari dealership I was kicked out when taking pictures because I was 'in the way of business', still stuck with me many years afterwards.

So relatable, I'm 21 and i work for a bmw service centre,found this job just by pure luck and passion(didn't study at all for this) and i love it, i get to drive everyday cars that just one year ago i would dream of
That mechanic must have been the inspiration for Ferrari loving forklift, Guido, from the movie Cars, that swapped the 4 tires on Lightning in front of the other pit crew in like 1 second.

I absolutely loved this story! I started as a detailer for a GM dealership at 18, now I work in an auto shop where I've done body work and turned wrenches on amazing cars. I love going to work everyday I feel as though I've found what I want to do!

When I had my Aston Martin Vantage I would tell people all the time if they could start it and release the hand brake they could drive it. On top of the glass key nobody could figure out the hand brake since it always stayed in the down position.

I worked at a BMW body shop for 13 months and we had some exotics too. Had to have meetings on not disclosing who wrecked their car sometimes!
I've passed that dealer a couple if times when I first moved to Orlando and I always wanted to work there but I could never catch them hiring, now they're moving to a newer larger location so hopefully I have a shot 😁

I stumbled my way into a Porter job for the service department of the large Porsche dealer back in 2015, I ended my stint as a service advisor at said dealership in 2018. Three years of massive stress but also driving insane stuff and even going to PCNA in Atlanta for “training” aka driving on the Porsche experience center test track multiple times. Best job ever.
I know the dealer he is speaking of. Met the owner and several of the salesman working at the Autoshow. They are a really good group of people. There is so much more that goes on with sales of those cars and events they do I had no idea about.
You would be amazed how much they will let you see and tell you if you ask and listen.

I worked as a porter for 4+ years at a Honda dealership.. tried tinting for about a month but balancing that within starting a new semester in school wasn’t ideal.. my training week I had to drop cuz it was wrong compared to the college I’d be working with. Ended up being the 1st car photographer for preowned at the dealership & then they needed new as well! Drove so many cars I never thought I’d be fortunate to drive. I love photography & cars in general! Even learned how to drive manual which was a journey but I wanted to cross it off the bucket list! 🔥😎

@@vk849 probably not. Shit was totaled like crazy. Literally only 1 wheel was driving it after the first hit and run. It would cost a fortune to repair but he obvi has more than enough since he was able to walk free from his charges. It’s just another car to him. He crashed 2 other supercars before that and was under the influence of drugs

I'm currently working as the Internal advisor/Aftersales Ambassador for the oldest Ferrari dealer in the USA! I get the pleasure of seeing an F40, F50, Enzo, 288 GTO, 599 GTO, and a Euro spec Diablo Roadster almost every day! Great way to enter the industry and make the connections required to be successful.

When I was in high school, through a family friend I got a job at a car shop. Like you, I knew nothing about cars so my job was cleaning stuff, either keeping cars dusted or cleaning oil/fluids off parts. The company was owned by a former race car driver and consisted of two locations. The year is 1987 so the Ferrari Testarossa and Lamborghini Countach were the top of the exotic car world.
Location one was the sales showroom. This is where he met clients and sold aftermarket parts like Recaro seats and Momo rims. In his showroom he had on display a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, a BMW M1, Ferrari 512BB and a Mercedes 600 limo with the Pullman seats.
Location two, the shop, was one street away. At this location he kept another Mercedes 600, a Porsche 930, two Ferrari 330 GT2+2 and his crown jewel, one of the first 50 Competition Spec 1965 Shelby 427 Cobras.
I never got to drive any of the exotics, the best I got to do was ferry vehicles to and from customer's homes including a BMW 733i, Jaguar XJS V-12 and a Mercedes 500SL but I have sat in both the Cobra and the M1. For a 16 year old kid this is one step from heaven.

I'm working as a porter right now (over a year at this point) for Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bentley, Lotus, Porsche, Maserati, sometimes Aston Martin and Rolls Royce too. I've driven some amazing cars on the road (most notably a 918 Spyder, GT2RS, and LaFerrari) and have gone to some cool houses but I'm almost at my breaking point. Upper management isn't the greatest here and I'm the only one in this department so I get all of the work. My job is only fun now about 5% of the time (when I get to road test something). Feels like a dead-end job where I'm at and my experience the past couple months has just made me want to quit and never come back to the automotive industry even though I really love these cars. Only way I can see myself being happy is if I'm miraculously handed a job where I drive these on a track all day or something. Don't know what to do...

I definitely lived vicariously through this one. And as a lifelong 355 (victim? masochist?) fan, seeing the whole major done in a few hours. Wow. More likely to see a Martian walk in.
Was visiting relatives in Tampa in my 944, decided to let a local dealer in Tampa replace the engine mounts. Service writer had a thick German accent and drove a later model 356; "Ve vill have your car repaired in one hour". In an hour not only did they have the new mounts installed but washed and test drove the car. Wish I could remember the dealer name but was thoroughly impressed.

I can attest to how friendly and nice the Ferrari of Central Florida was in 200. I met some of the employees at the Orlando International Car Show and they allowed me access to the cars behind the ropes for a few minutes. I think I was 15 at the time. I wish I could have worked there but it was just too far for me. I was about an hour and a half away.

As a VinWiki channel subscriber, I continue to enjoy these stories, and appreciate the fact you are continuing to produce new content. However, I am not a fan of the new 'intro' sequence. Could you bring back the old sequence instead?
I got to move our dealers Carrera GT and 918 and drove almost almost every modern Porsche ever because we had to drive them from our lots and gas them up. I even got to drive a handful of classic cars since we were a certified classic dealer.
I would also do any task my dealer needed such driving documents to customers, delivering cars, anything really.
I got to drive all over LA in super nice Porsche's and get paid as my dealers Lot Manager at only 22.
All because I started as a car washer at an Audi dealership that needed one guy for its Porsche location.
You know you're a good tech when your service manager hands you a repair order with 20-30 hours of work and the tells you the customer is leaving in the vehicle in 7 hours for a family vacation. When things need to get done, it doesn't matter how long its suppose to take. It only matters what the deadline is
I live in Central Florida and have worked for 10 years in the auto industry with 3 different Nissan franchises. I had to walk away because the dealer management/owners are just so greed driven and treat their employees as if they are equal to the dirt on the bottom of their shoes.
Trying to start over and find a good company to work for is not the easiest task in 2022.
My first job was as a valet for a Mercedes dealer. Wa also used to valet cars for service from their houses to the dealer and back. Give an 18 year old an S55 to "deliver". Sure.. what a job.

Best first job for a car enthusiast would be an apprentiship with a good detailer. You will get to see some really cool, and really gross cars. You will also learn to take proper care of a vehicle.
