Thank you for this video, I need to divide my triostar as well shes also outgrown her pot so now Ive got an idea of how to go about repotting her since shes in the actual pot and not her nursery pot.
Great video! I have a Stromanthe Triostar I need to divide, but I didn't know how to do it. You are a lifesaver, and a plant saver! I was dreading having to divide my plant because she is so beautiful, and I didn't want to lose her. I don't have to worry about that now. Thank you! 😃
The is for sharing I need to do the same. Kinda. More save the one healthy rhizome and pot with another stromanthe but still. And you have one of the prettiest triostars I’ve seen.
Wow I wish mine looked like yours. Her leaves are crispy at the tips and the sides. I noticed some yellowing as well. I I did buy a humidifier. The water I leave out for several days before I water her. Any tips? I don’t know what am doing wrong?
Hi, Stacey. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond-- the comment system hasn't been working very well for me lately. Regarding crispy leaves-- the first things that come to mind are humidity and water. Stromanthe like higher humidity though they can handle lower humidity levels better than some of their relatives, from my experience. When it comes to water-- I do use only distilled water. One of things that I found out was that certain chemicals in water don't break down or evaporate when left out. Examples would be synthetic chlorine, such as chloramine, and natural or even additive fluoride, etc. The problem is that distilled water can get expensive and there can also be a lot of added plastic waste involved. However, you can make distilled water on the stove, too. So long as you can rule out humidity as being the underlying issue, you might try using distilled water for a while and see if it improves. I hope this helps!
Hi Addy! Have you ever planted prayer plants from the tubers/rhizomes? Some of my imported prayer plants are wilting but their roots are still good. So I cut the leaves and let the roots remain. Hopefully they will bounce back.
Thank you Addy. I bought my stromanthe 3 weeks ago and I’m quite nervous. Your video has helped to settle my nerves a little 🙂 Some of the leaves have brown tips, what should I do? How do you usually deal with brown tips on leaves?
Congratulations on your new stromanthe! To prevent brown leaves, I try to keep humidity up around my stromanthe as they are higher humidity houseplants. I also use distilled water exclusively. Maranta-type plants can be sensitive to minerals in tap water, like chlorine (synthetic chlorine/chloromine) and fluoride, and the damage from these elements can show up as browning at the tips. For tips that are already brown, and my stromanthe came with a few, you can: 1) trim the brown away (I suggest leaving a tiny bit of brown edging so you don't cut into the healthy plant cuticle which will require the plant to direct energy into healing the cut) or; 2) leave it alone to see if it's just a little browning that you don't mind or if it's an older leaf that is in the process of drying up (once it shrivels, you can gently pull it away). Hope this helps! :)
Yes! I've been meaning to do this but keep switching up my soil composition. However, the important parts are usually the same so I will definitely keep this in mind for an upcoming video! :)
I get here trying to be aware of how to take care of my new plant but after watching tours, I'm not sure if it's the same because mine was with some leaves Pink when I brought it 2 Weeks ago, but now is only green and almost white, what do you recommend? I want my plant to grow beautiful but first to be as healthy as possible. Thanks for your video!
Hi, Karla. That's interesting! I suggest doing a Google search for "Stromanthe Magic Star" to see if your plant is maybe a Magic Star and not a Triostar. They are similar, related plants that have the same care needs, but have different coloring/variegation on the leaf. If it isn't a Magic Star, you might want to try giving it more light. The more bright but indirect light I give my Stromanthe, the more pink/cream I see on the leaves. My Stromanthe has done the best right next to a north-facing window though it also did well a few feet from an east-facing window. I hope this helps!
Hi Addy. I just got these about a month ago and it's by far my favorite. It keeps giving me beautiful new shoots. However, I noticed that the pink back on some of the leaves are streaky and faded which i thought was maybe normal from sun exposure or something, but looking at many other people's triostar, including one that's been left outdoors in the sun, I noticed other people don't have that. Could these be from pests? I did find some white flies around this one. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.
I keep mine in indirect bright light and try to make sure it is getting some humidity. I also make sure it has a very fast draining soil (I use perlite to do this) as these types of plants don't like to sit in water and the top few inches of soil needs to dry before watering. I use distilled water, as they can be sensitive to a variety of elements that you find in most tap water. I am careful with fertilizer and dilute synthetic fertilizer pretty drastically (an 1/8 recommended strength usually), though I have switched to organic fertilizer only because I can go crazy with it (worm castings). As far as a plant in the maranta family goes, this has been my easiest maranta ever and I would say for that family, it just might be the easiest to maintain. I hope this is helpful and if you have any questions about care, let me know and I'll share as much as I can! :)
Addy Beez ... thanks for all the tips. Mine it was doing great but it has 3 new leaves that are not going to open because they look brown. What do you think its causing the new leaves to rot before they open? Maybe because I mist the plant? I only use distilled water. Thanks for your help.
Hi, Carolyna. Sorry to hear that your new growth is browning. From my experience, it could be a few things and there's a lot I don't know but I will definitely share what I can. For me, browning tips on growth that hasn't opened yet is usually a sign of water stress. This can be both over and under watering. While the rest of the leaves seem to be able to handle water stress better, the new growth tends to brown up and die off when water stress has occurred even after it's been amended. It could also be humidity related. Regarding misting, I've seen positive and negative outcome related research. I used to mist my plants but stopped because I worried about increasing the likelihood of disease. However, I also got tired of worrying about cleaning out my humidifiers so often (I found mold in one after two days). Pebble water trays didn't work for me either in the long run. So, right now, I'm testing out using oil diffusers, sans the oil, to increase humidity in small areas around my marantas. It's too early to know if it will work but I've got my fingers crossed. I hope this helpful and good luck with your new growth. :)
Let me tell you! If I"m not filming it, I usually pot somewhere that I can dump that soil without wasting paper towels. Someone suggested just grabbing a tray for filming and I'm not sure why I didn't think of it before.
I have this plant and it is definitely one of my favorites.

Great video , and love your coffee filter idea!!!! Using today ♥️
nice video, you should buy yourself a potting mat ...... it is so convenient and less messy !
This is a fantastic idea! Thank you--believe it or not, I never thought about getting one.
Pretty placemat
👍👍
I just bought one and there are 3 connected by a main root. Am I allowed to cut that root to have 3 separate plants? Google wasn’t specific :((

I just got a tricolor ginger. Can I propagate it like variegated ginger? Should I plant in ground? I live in houston

AM having the same problem with mine. Thanks for this Q & A. :)
@@fop2252 Thanks for watching! :)
Love that plant!!! I have a few now..
They are so beautiful! 😊
How much light do they need? And do you need a humidifier to keep up the humidity in the winter months or is a pebble tray enough?
@@97ana Morning sunlight once a week is okay, I live in the tropics so we don't have winter, pebble tray will do or misting the plant once in a while.
Hi nice demo, what type of pot do you use? Is it terracotta?

you can try mosquito bits. it's not a toxic chemical so it's safe to use around your pets or family.
