To be more clear, they're the same species, same plant but a different cultivar or variety. Judging by the similar name, Magicstar is pretty likely a "sport" of Triostar that a plant breeder happened to notice doing something different and cultivated as its own thing. Or it could have been a completely distinct variegated sport of the solid green Stromanthe sanguinea (which is uncommon now in cultivation but pictures of it do exist). Variegation can be highly unstable and some plants will maintain the same pattern as the sport, some won't.
And actually while typing this comment, I did a brief bit bit of digging and found a patent for "Magic Star", called "Valmic" in Australia in 2007 that lists it as a sport of the variety "Stripestar" that was observed in 1999 in the Netherlands and cultivated from there. And on further digging, also found the 2001 Australian patent for 'Triostar' which is also described as a sport of 'Stripestar' which was first cultivated in 1994. If you search the cultivar name and "patent" or "IP" you can usually find a lot of interesting info. Remember that most of what we know and understand about plant varieties is all marketing and if people are trying to make money off of a fancy new plant variety, there's going to be a documented trail to when the variety first surfaced.
This is absolutely way more info than you were ever looking for lol

Thank you for your comment - I now believe I have the solid green stromanthe sanguinea. I have no white flecking or anything on my plant. Makes sense too as I am from Australia. Thanks again for sharing this!

Hi Kaylee 😊 I'm a new subscriber! So I bought recently a plant that I tought was a stromanthe triostar and was watching your video to help me identify it but it has some variegation that yours does not have. And looking at pictures on Pinterest I found that is not a stromanthe or a calathea. It's actually a Ctenanthe oppenheimiana tricolor. It is also really similar to both of these plants!

GOOOOOOD THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! It's mostly 2 month now that my magicstar is home and I'm still looking for info about lightening and watering and all but can't find. Mostly seems like this plant doesn't even exist. How should I treat her so she can be her best self? (ends of some leaves are very dry.... But she's still growing a lot)
Also I looooove how you talk about magicstar cause where I bought it they didn't make the mistake, and so when I found it a saw a triostar and a magic star near each other (with right name on each) and had to choose between both (I was already buying too much plant to take 2 more) and I felt like "OK but the triostar is soooo much instagrammable, sooo much fancy I should totally have it" + "but God, this one, less white, less showed on internet, she has so much sparkling white dot" and I totally fell in love with her. I have absolutely no regret on buying this one it was a total love at first sight

I think my plant it a ctenanthe oppenheimiana tricolour or never never plant. It's almost between the two visually and could be mistaken for either. I still love my plant! But if you have one that looks similar to these maybe look up ctenanthe oppenheimiana tricolour/never-never plants and see if maybe you have one of those. The never-never will have light silvery bars on the green portion of the variegated leaves, whereas the triostars' green is a little more bold (I'm pretty sure this the best way to tell when they're not flowering).

So I just brought home my Triostar from the greenhouse and upon examination I’ve found the underside of the leaves are variegated as well... lots of white or green striping on the underside of almost all leaves. I might have 1 solid pink/red out of the 30+ leaves on the plant. Is that normal? I’m looking through many, many pictures and I see very few that have any break in the color on the underside. Everything else looks exactly like any other triostar. Any ideas of where to find more information? Perhaps this is a particular variety...

Hey! You are quite welcome! Yeah for some reason the internet doesnt want to acknowlege that these are not the same plant and nobody is talking about it!
So.. about your plant! Does it have crispy tips? Yellow leaves? Do you own any other types of prayer plants? A friend of mine bought a magic star a few weeks ago and thought it was drooping when it was actually just bowing! These plants are part of the prayer plant family which means they move.. a lot!
Also, how do you usually tell if your plant needs water? Do you stick a finger into the soil or do you have something like a moisture probe?
I guess another question is, is it winter where you are? If so then your plant may no longer be getting enough light!

I am super confused. I would never see the plant on the viewer's right and recognize it as a stromanthe sanguine triostar. Stromanthe sanguine triostars have this creamy super pale pale pink variegation in the leaves and the green of the leaves I would best describe as a deep bluish green in the same way that calathea ornata's leaves are that crazy deep green which really sets off the pale pink and is beautiful. The other plant here has yellow to neon green variegation like a calathea lubbersiana. In fact if someone tried to pass it off as lubbersiana, I would understand that a lot more than as a triostar. I am so sad for people who bought the one wanting the other and that they had apparently never seen an actual stromanthe triostar to be able to tell the difference since it is such a stunning plant.

I bought mine from individual owned nursery . It was priced 29 but when I bough it it was little dried and scars, they gave it to me for 14!!! I just re pot it and put it in indirect sunlight ...now it is looking beautiful and I just love how gorgeous this plant is!!!!
