Stromanthe thalia 'Triostar' Houseplant Care - 42 of 365

  • It might feel like Christmas because this prayer plant-known as Stromanthe thalia 'Triostar' has variations of red, white, green and pink. The regular Stromanthe thalia just has dark green tops and reddish undersides, so is a little less "dressy". But 'Triostar' has become a popular houseplant on its own, so it's worth covering in #42 of "365 Days of Plants".
Additionally, in Ep 31. here: • Prayer Plant (Marantac... , I have an extensive care video on Prayer Plants, which I encourage you to watch. Otherwise, this particular video will give you more information on how I've been growing and maintaining this one.

Wow, I'm surprised at how many problems people are having with these in the comments. I've had mine for 6 years. The only problem I've had was relocation shock when I first got it.
Here's how I take care of it: East facing window, water when it looks like it's dieing, no extra humidity, liquid fertilizer when I happen to think of it, keep it root bound, wipe off leaves like once a year, it's friends are 3 potted Birds of Paradise (they've become besties), and I ignore her the rest of the time. Lol. I feel like I neglect it compared to how others care for them.
I find most house plants don't like being moved around and enjoy having other plant friends to chat with. They also tend to like being cozy in their pot with lots of roots. Don't be in a rush to repot or pot up. Hope my methods help some one.

Mine was living but not thriving, so what I did is I started watering her only with bottled water, and she's responding amazingly! Got one new leaf that's practically all white, I'm in love, and there's already two more I see coming out soon. I'm so glad she liked the change :3

I've seen pictures of these growing in bushes outside in warmer countries, in pretty much full sun! Mine do great right in front of my north facing window, standing on a plate with water and pebbles for constant humidity. As long as you give them that humidity (60% or more) they won't get brown edges, as far as i know. Absolutely love them.

  • @amandaraewright

I’ve had mine for two years and it’s tripled in size. 3’ from a north facing window sitting over an air vent. I let it dry out thoroughly between waterings. It grows like crazy, and I’ve had to repot it twice already. Minimal brown tips, and it seems to prefer lower humidity that some of my other plants (like my calatheas).

After watching a variety of folks talk about plants, I'm finding a pattern about what is considered a high maintenance plant - needs a lot of humidity. I've only been a plant parent since Oct. 2019 and so far I am succeeding in keeping humidity at around 60% at home during fall and winter, so I'm very happy that my prayer plants are happy. I didn't even know some of them flowered! My maranta lime green sprouted tiny purple flowers.

I have this gorgeous plant, and so far she is doing good, she is in a west facing window, I mist her once a day and keep her soil not too dry, but not soggy. She lost a leaf or two when I first got her, but now she is just happy where she is. Thanks Summer, loving this series.

"I know what you're thinking, it looks like Christmas"
I see what you're saying, but I definitely would not have made that connection on my own. I bought two of these a couple of months ago and they've been doing well so far. I was keeping them in a 3 season porch, but it was struggling in the cold nights we've been getting (40F outside, probably around 55F inside the porch). So I just brought them inside. They seem to be happier now.

This should be called the "ERK" plant because that's the sound the shopping cart makes when people see this plant in the garden store. It's the I have to have that plant. I bought two in early spring and just love them. I have a gentle LED non-grow light overhead which the plant likes (my ferns like it too) and I adore the way the purple glows on the leaves. This is a favourite.

  • @basiemyles9910

I also have S. "Triostar". I was so excited when I was buying it that I spent 0 seconds inspecting it. Unfortunately, my stromanthe already had new growth that was completely dry - all the closed leaves were already wilted. It is in high humidity situation now - around 70-80% and I am hoping for a recovery, but it definitely is finicky, even with all the right conditions. I have found "Magic Star" somewhat easier, but again, it might be due to the fact that the "Magic Star" I purchased was in excellent shape.

Stromanthe will give you that splash of color while totally not being drama queens like calathea. I've found three things you need for stromanthe success: 1) A humidity mat or nice sized pebble tray. 2) Not a heavy feeder! A spoonful of worm castings monthly during active growth & a supplement of chelated iron with micronutrients diluted at one quarter strength bi-monthly during the growing season is all you really need. 3) Nearing the end of the growing season take her to the sink or bathtub and give it a good through watering and flush out those roots & soil of any residual salts . However, I don't recommend using tap water for this step!

@@afeefaabdulrahman8450 could be for many reasons. It's going to take some detective work on your part because it's hard to tell without seeing the specific plant. Here are some likely causes: Overwatering, underwatering, minerals chemicals and salts in your water, excessive fertilizer & nitrogen in your soil, misting with water collecting on the leaves, lack of humidity, placing it an area prone to drafts and direct light. Hope this helps and good luck!

I have pilea glaucophylla aquamarine and is losing its leaves and stems. The leaves are getting brown and just fall. I had in west window exposed to some direct sun, then moved to about 6 feet away from west window. Then moved to the shelf exposed to medium to lower medium light. My humid is 50 and over at times because I cook a lot. I don't know what to do anymore. Soil is moist at all times with good drainage . What light does this plant do best? And should I keep it moist and let it to dry little in between waterings? I love this plant and I really want this to live. Please help!!!😢

Hi Summer, I remember seeing a variation of this stromanthe triostar in one of your videos, it is stromanthe charlie with creamy white and green variegation. Can you share some tips of how you care for the stromanthe charlie?

  • @irasemaortegamontequin8092

i live in a really hot area of Mexico, first i put mine next to a pothus near a window, lots of indirect light but i think my triostar didnt like that much light because it started to get brown on the ends so i moved it next to a monstera with a little less light and it seemed to be doing great until my extremely playful dog threw the pot TWICE in a row of two days and now the triostar seems a little sad and it's not praying a lot as it used to do... what would you recommend?

Urgh I gave mine tap water. Kept it in great humidity, but didn’t always have distilled water. I have it in a north facing window( laundry room / bathroom/high humidity) any other ideas? She isn’t dead, but browning

I have a stromanthe triostar I got it at a big box store and it came with some crispy leaves. I have been rehabilitating it with vigilant watering using filtered water and have a small humidifier going right by it. It’s by a north-facing window. The only other option is a south-facing window. But now the new leaves that are coming in are completely white/cream. How do I get the variegation back?

I’m shocked because I got one of these with no label. Had no idea what it was and I’ve been caring for it completely wrong. Not using distilled water, not creating a humid space etc.

Is there a difference between this one and the Calathea Triostar? Cause I have one that was labeled as that but I’m not sure if they’re the same or not 🙈

    • @sarahgiggles9444
      @sarahgiggles9444 Před 5 lety +3

technically there is no such thing as a calathea triostar. It's a very common mislabeling because the plants are closely related, but it's a stromanthe!

I haven't had any trouble with this plant TBH, but I find my new shoots are all coming in so green with little variegation. I suspect I'm over-fertilizing (??) do liquid fertilizers encourage more green leaves on variegated plants? It's been right in the window facing west. I've tried direct and indirect sun, but nothing has changed.

Hi Addy, my Stromanthe had 2 new leaf rolls but didn't successfully open ended up drying (dried leaf roll). Any idea on what might have caused this?
Currently it's located about 5 ft away from a North facing window and water it when the top 1 to 2 inch soil is dry with tap water that I have let sit out over night.
