    "Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder in which a person feels the need to perform certain routines repeatedly (called "compulsions"), or has certain thoughts repeatedly (called "obsessions").[1] The person is unable to control either the thoughts or activities for more than a short period of time.[1] Common compulsions include hand washing, counting of things, and checking to see if a door is locked.[1] Some may have difficulty throwing things out.[1] These activities occur to such a degree that the person's daily life is negatively affected.[1] This often takes up more than an hour a day.[2] Most adults realize that the behaviors do not make sense.[1] The condition is associated with tics, anxiety disorder, and an increased risk of suicide." - wikipedia

    My OCD was always centered around counting. It started when I was around 6. I always worried something would happen to my family if I didn’t do the counting rituals. As I got older I started to try and not do them and trained myself to limit them. So if I usually had to close a door 5 times I’d tell myself you can only do 2. The more I did this the easier it was for my brain to not do the rituals.

So it always took him hours to get somewhere because he was convinced he just ran someone over. He also couldn’t leave a room without going back multiple times to check that no one was left in the room. For some reason he always thought there would be a dead person left behind?

    I suffered severe OCD as well throughout my high school days. I resonate a lot with what he said. Such as asking for reassurance from people around us, and also Specifically knowing that it’s irrational, yet continue doing it because it ‘feels right”.
    Thankfully I’ve been able to overcome it and be cured because much of my compulsions was caused by anxiety from environmental factors. Nonetheless, I think we should share this more often and shine light upon it so that we can de-stigmatize OCD.

  • @ivylayne1649
    @ivylayne1649 Před 5 lety +27

    I had ocd tendencies as a child and I relate to and understand much of what he said. I think mine stemmed from my parents divorce though and ordering and checking things to gain a sense of control over my life. As a child I felt an extreme sense of anxiety with it and felt they were things I had to do or the anxiety and obsessive thoughts would consume me. The compulsions: the washing, the aligning, the checking, eases the feelings temporarily. That is ocd in a nutshell. I believe I grew out of it as well/just decided one day I was sick of it and couldn’t do it anymore. Never got formal treatment for it. Symptoms do still act up at chaotic times in life but overall it’s not a part of my life.

    I left a previous comment about my experience with ocd but I’d humbly like to offer some advice for anyone suffering that cares to read it. If your ocd centers around counting and numbers: say you have to turn the light switch on & off 18 times for it to feel “right”, do it at a lower number and sit with it. Let the anxiety wash over and pass. Then the next time you’re doing the rituals, try an even lower number. That new number is the new “standard” of the ritual. Keep doing this until you get to 1. This is an “exposure therapy” that you can do by yourself at home for free. Do the same thing with washing or alignment. Just do it less and less than you normally would. Sit with the uncomfortable feelings. Over time it will not be as mentally painful and taxing. I wish everyone so much luck that is suffering.

    I had it really bad as a child. I used to have to do simple things twice such as sitting down, flights of stairs etc. Overtime it's gotten better but I still have this voice in my head saying 'if you don't do this then your CZcams career is over' etc etc. Theres always some consequence that formulates in my mind if I try and avoid fulfilling any of my compulsory obsessions. Most of them are just house related things such as double checking the oven is switched off even though I know for certain it is. And always arranging my cupboards so that 70% of the food is on the left side (part of my obsession is things have to be proportionately more left than right). Sometimes if I'm walking down the street I will have to go back and do something differently such as walk through a different doorway, because in my mind if I walk through the wrong doorway then it will change my life for the worse. The list goes on and on but as someone who has dealt with this all my life its just become the norm and it doesn't bother me. I don't have any issue with hygiene like this dude tho. I guess everyone's OCD manifests differently.

    I’ve always had intrusive thoughts of violence and other horrible things. I would avoid knives, and cry and couldn’t tell anyone about anything. OCD sucks. I’ve had bits of contamination obsessions too. Used to not eat the ends of parts of food i touched and also would put socks on my doorknob to make sure no one was contaminating it. it’s always a good reminder knowing I was never alone when I hid my illness from others. those were the loneliest years of my life and I was very young but was convinced I was crazy. People really don’t realize what ocd is. Its not pickiness. It’s irrational and uncontrollable behaviour and it’s absolutely exhausting. Great interview jack!! I’m glad I was able to listen to someone else’s experiences!!! I found your drug use interesting, ocd has kept me away from drugs. I don’t drink. And weed makes me so paranoid and seems to bring back my obsessive thinking to a point where I can’t stop it. I still micro dose often tho. I guess I spent so much time worrying about insanity that I tend to avoid things that can cause it. Lol. talking about it practically cured my ocd too. Well not cured but you know what I mean. I was out of the loop and have been since. Keeping it a secret became part of my ocd, the thoughts that went along with it were complicated. I’m just glad to be better now.

    I struggled with it for quite a while without even knowing I had it, until about a year ago. Mine was based around contamination as well, a lot of what he’s describing. I even couldn’t eat around other people in case they moved around it or breath on it. It took me half an hour to have a bowl of cereal once. I ended up losing so much weight. Much better now after being on Prozac.
