    The shiny metallised bags that ground coffee, crisps etc come in may be an even more interesting prospect - they have extremely low oxygen permeability. With the addition of a cheap heat sealer, you could use these to store oxygen sensitive foods like dried yeast, spices or herbs for a good long time, much longer than regular plastics.

    My wifes PopPop is the same way and that's also why my wife married me. I can range from fixing a car to crocheting to sewing to cooking. There are no static gender rolls in our family. The males do most all of the cooking and cleaning. My wife is an executive and appreciates never having to touch a dirty plate or make a meal. I also do the laundry and the windows. My wife even stopped going to get her hair colored as I, as a recovering perfectionist, do it much better. I draw the line at nails though. I stink at that.

      I remember having cardboad cut outs of animals on the back of the boxes which could be turned into 3D models of animal heads, the elephant one was really good as I remember !
      They probably got stopped for liability reasons too, they probably didn't want to encourage kids to handle sharp scissors or knives. Excellent video - thanks A.S. As always, very relaxing listening to you talk about random stuff. Funnily enough, my mum recently had exactly the same thing happen, on two separate occasions, with two low priced items ordered from Amazon. The tracking said they’d been delivered but never showed up. From what I remember, the tracking/delivery details looked really suspicious as well. So, I talked her through contacting the suppliers to ask for a refund. Like you, I suspected it was a scam, and I wasn’t confident that she would see her money again. However, both suppliers provided a full refund. I was racking my brain to work out how this was a scam - if indeed it was. I think you may have touched on it - it could be a percentages game - for low cost items, if 20% of people never ask for a refund, then that’s money in the bank - whilst not drawing much unwanted attention from the bigwigs (and smallwigs - I'm not wiggest) at Amazon, if everyone that asks for a refund gets one. It would be interesting to find out if this is actually the case.

    I came back to this video just to let you know that I’ve been using and saving old cereal/cracker/chip bags and using them as various trash receptacles in all corners of my life! If I have a large bag I’ll use it for kitty litter because so many plastic bags now a days are so thin that they’ll have holes in them before I can reuse them. Another application is as a car door trash bag for small things that end up in my car; it’s rolls down into a nice compact container that doesn’t rip easily and doesn’t fly around if I have my windows down. As someone who professionally soldered and performed intensive electronics repair for Ericsson back in the 90s and early 2000s, this hurts my heart. How can anyone be alright with that finished PCB? If this went through a reflow oven, then there are even more issues, as the boards should come out looking quite pristine for all of the SMDs. Most importantly, where the heck was the QA? *shudder*

    I do recommend anyone considering reusing plastics to hand dry them with a dry cloth as in the past my experience has been that depending on the soap you use and the concentration, as well as your thoroughness in rinsing (it seemed in the video it was a quick and unconcerned rinse) a chemical smell/taste can remain on whatever you store in the reused packaging. Also, ensure you can properly seal whatever is stored in it, that dish left little room to ensure a proper seal and would do minimally more than storing it unsealed. Of course by the way you loosely sealed your bread bag with a clip the length of an inch or two, that bread will go stale quickly. You're not trying to achieve a perfect seal, but the less air you allow in through gaps, the longer your food will last.

    I use my food saver to seal these bags and chip bags etc. I open the bag, use what I want, trim and seal. I do it over and over until it is too short to use again. Most bags get 4 or 5 uses, some times more. Potato chips last much longer. Oxygen and humidity is what makes food go stale. I just insert the end of the chip bag, gently push as much air out as I can and hit "seal". My chips last much, much longer staying crisp and fresh.

    I think there could be a good challenge video around the lock down free school meals controversy. The boxes were supposed to be valued at £30 which should be ok, even easy. However the photos of the actual food boxes being supplied are a long way short of that in value as some supplied profiteered. Perhaps take one of the photos of an actual food box and price it up from some the main supermarkets.

    "Little toy car made out of paperclips, the size of a paperclip." You do know that's impossible, right? If it's made of more than one, it literally can not be the size of one.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  Před 3 lety

      I guess it depends what is meant by 'size'. It would be possible to make a car from one or more paperclips that stood within the outline size of the original paperclip, but if you watch the other video, you'll see that he explains his rationale anyway; some paperclips are really big, and when people say things like "size of an ant" they are being figurative. For example Grain Of Wheat Bulbs: www.railwayscenics.com/volt-grain-wheat-bulbs-c-20_25_64_113_207.html

    If you do strip a thread in a plastic case, a tiny bit of the pvc covering off a piece of wire dropped into the hole will give you enough grip if you don't overtighten it

  • @pmvdmeulen
    @pmvdmeulen Před 3 lety

    You can store rice or beans in it for longer periods of time. You can probably deal it again. Harder crackling plastic stores better, because it doesn't "breathe" as polyethylene. Soft non crackling bags seaps air through.

    Those HDPE bags can also be re-sealed with a food saver unit. Crisps, cereal and the like enjoy being resealed vs rolled up and dumped back in the box.

    Hi Shrimp, one guess I'd have as to why the product details changed is to do with the barcode attached. Amazon requires a valid barcode that's registered to you be linked to each product you list, but these are either expensive to purchase or you have to get them from dodgy bulk online resellers and that's a lottery as to whether or not it will work. So I guess they managed to get one product up and they're just planning on reusing the listing for a different product so they don't need to go through the massive faff of getting the system to accept another barcode / GTIN/UPC. I've listed a product on amazon before and getting it to accept a code is a bewildering mess where you soon realize barcodes are basically an illegal cartel so I can fully understand someone not wanting to do it multiple times. And I was only trying to list a novelty UK pub carpet based colouring in book which had none of the international GTIN faff I imagine importing comes with

    If I took something to bits like that it would have to end up in the bin, as I wouldn't have a clue how to put it back. My late father was really food at doing that, but sadly I don't take after him in that way. I like the plastic bag tip, though they wouldn't fit over my most used oven dish. Bound to be useful for something though....watching your videos has made me more frugal than I used to be 👍

    The bags will be removed strait from the recycling. most nave no markings for recycling even though HDPE is one of the most valuable plastics to recycle but the fact that you reuse them makes so much difference. I never considered reusing these bags till now thank you.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  Před 3 lety +2

      We have separate recycling facilities for bags and plastic film. I think despite being a mix of resins, it can be recycled into reusable shopping bags (the thick semi woven kind)
