Etching Top Shells To Reveal Their Pearly Beauty

  • I picked up some empty seashells at the beach - let's try to make them really shine!
These are Thick Top Shells (Phorcus lineatus) I think - common on the beaches near me, and they have a beautiful layer of pearly nacre that is hidden beneath a banded outer layer - the aim in this video is to try to remove that outer layer to reveal the shiny stuff.

Even if the subject isn't quite my thing I will have a listen and will often keep on watching. No wonder you continue to increase the number of subscribers. I grew up next to a busy trainline. When the express trains flew past the floor would rumble and the walls would shake. As a result, I learned to tune noises out and literally not hear them when I want to. I can sleep through anything. When I wake up, for the first five seconds or so I'm in total silence, until my brain turns the noise back on again. It's quite something what the brain can do in search of tranquility.

    • @LindaGailLamb.0808
      @LindaGailLamb.0808 Před 3 lety

I've experienced the same thing: While I was growing up, my family moved from big-city Edmonton to a much smaller town to be near some relatives, for a year. While we were waiting for a new house that was being built to be finished, we were renting an old house... less than a block from the tracks. Trains came by a couple of times a day, and there was one that came regularly about two or three am. At first we'd wake up, then go back to sleep when it was gone. Then we'd wake up, "yup, there's the train" and be falling asleep *before* the last of it was gone. Then we learned to sleep right through it.
Then one night I woke up, and heard nothing but silence - not so much as a cricket. I checked the clock on the dresser: "3 am. Wheres the train? It should be here now." I woke up... ...because of the silence, when the train was late for some reason 😁.
You can get so used to something that you just tune it out... and then be disturbed because you miss it when it's gone.

Do you think your brain was tuning out the noise when you didn't even hear a cricket? That's what I used to notice, my brain developed a 'world master volume' dial, and I could dial it right down, and sometimes I forgot to dial it back up again prior to waking :)
ps. I never had the trains NOT come lol, they came every half hour and we were right by the station where they stopped too.

I understand what you mean. I was raised in my formative years in "the country" where background noise was wind through the fields, birdcalls and on special occasions, thunder. I lost that by the time I was 8 and we moved to the city, but I've managed to find tranquility with long walks through the city. My favourite times are when there's a cool mist or drizzle in the autumn. For some inexplicable reason I like a stroll during a cool drizzle on a grey day. One of the reasons I like your channel so much is this return to my childhood tranquility.
And the scambaiting is fun too. I got interested in scammers since I learned of "The Nigerian Letter" in a newspaper article I'd read back in the late '80s. Soon after I read the article my dad received one and he didn't know what to make of it until I told him what I'd read. Not long after that I was getting them myself via internet. I still have that letter as an historical keepsake.

I often find the hustle and bustle of a busy city centre to be a surprisingly tranquil space rather than the vast openness of the countryside. If you can detach yourself from the surroundings and become a passive observer and watch people rushing hither and tither with purpose, the sheer sense of connectedness to other people you get as you hear sirens wailing imagining that could be a new person coming in to the planet or the last journey of someone who has seen it all, it can be a disarmingly relaxing situation. Certainly better than travelling miles & miles from civilisation where there's nothing but trees and grass to look at nothing to keep you entertained but the nagging thought that you might break your leg and be unable to get back to the car, be snacked on by wild animals as you lay there slowly starving to death and your remains not be found for months, if ever. Also you might not be able to find a cashpoint when you need one.

I hate people being everywhere, always, all the time and crowding both nature and me. I live in the Netherlands, and that's just a tiny, crowded country when it comes to being alone in nature. I try to disconnect but I get reminded almost every second of other humans by barking dogs, shouting children or even just calmy talking people or knowing anyone else but me is nearby. It's frustrating, but a lot of it is also me being easily agitated by that kind of stuff. On the worst days I just get tired, overstimulated and have to get inside again.
But then there are those other days when everything is very tolerable for some unknown reason. Those are the days I try cherish to the fullest. I can't really seem to actively seek it out. It just happens when it does.

I have a vacation house at the Jersey shore directly between the beach and the bay. I like to go down in the winter when it's empty and just walk around; it's quite peaceful and relaxing compared to the bustle of the summertime. I also have a ton of shells I've picked up. Going to try this. Nice video +1

Thanks for the video! I have said so before, but I really love that you care for all life, even the tiniest things inside a shell! I wish more people were like that - especially the salmon farmers, who, in our fjord have killed almost all shells, shrimps, small fish with all their chemicals - to the extent that the sea birds are gone, they find no more food. It is heartbreaking and the salmon they produce is not fit for human consumption. Please, everybody, join me in the pledge to ban salmon!

I wouldn't use hydrochloric acid for this unless you make it extremely dilute, because it reacts incredibly fast with all forms of calcium carbonate, so it's easy to go much further than you want to when taking layers off. I would recommend using citric acid instead, for several reasons: First, it's cheap, since you can buy it as kettle descaler, a purpose for which it works brilliantly. Second, it's non-toxic and won't damage your skin or eyes (though it will of course sting like an angry wasp if it finds a cut anywhere) if splashed or spilled, so is safe to use.
Also, you can make a far more concentrated (and therefore more acidic) solution of it than you can get with vinegar, since it comes as a solid and can be dissolved at more than 50% by weight in water (vinegar is typically 5% acetic acid), though up to 80% by weight in boiling water. Which leads onto another advantage - you can heat up a solution of citric acid (of any concentration) without acrid fumes coming off, which is something you definitely don't want to do with hydrochloric acid and isn't a particularly pleasant experience even with vinegar.
Finally, citrate ions have a chelating effect with calcium ions, which helps to accelerate the reaction of the citric acid with calcium carbonate. The product of the reaction (calcium citrate) has an auto-buffering effect (weak acid plus it's salt both in solution at the same time = pH buffer), which limits the acidity. Also, the solubility of the product is far lower than the acid itself (around 1 gram per litre), which tends to slow the reaction down over time, ensuring that you can't go too far even if you left a shell sitting in the acid solution overnight.

RE Sounds and noises - I happen to be odd (and probably on a spectrum of some sort,) but noises and sounds drive me up a wall. For instance - a barking dog in the distance would shatter my well being if it kept up. Extraneous noises often leave me in an agitated state. I once slept in an apartment where the neighbor upstairs had an oxygen generator that ran all night with a low-frequency vibration without any regularity. After several weeks of trying to work with the management and the tenant to place a sound barrier (at my expense) under the oxygen unit, we finally had to move. I mention regularity because once I am able to identify and pinpoint a sound, it somehow lessens my irritation.
Others, when finding out about this, often laugh at me and tell me to "tune it out" not understanding that if it was THAT EASY, I would have done it long ago. It's kind of an example of what that chap was on about in one of your videos. Where he said that the phrase "If I can do it, so can you." was somehow non-productive to some. I think I understand what he meant now upon great introspection. I'm a strange bird, so I am. It's part of the reason I find this content and you personally so refreshing and calming.
I will attempt to use your logic and strategy when dealing with my deficiencies in the future.

One thing about sea shells is that you can make quick lime and then limewater. Strange enough, there are several desserts in Thai cuisine that use limewater. They usually use freshwater shells because they are more available, as one can get those from nearby canals or rivers. I wonder if these sea shells can be used in the same way. I guess that chemical composition should not be that different from freshwater shells.

You in the UK may also be able to find citric acid in the shops. It can be mixed to a higher concentration than acetic acid (vinegar) Also, rinsing with water doesn't destroy the acid, it only dilutes it. A teaspoon of sodium bicarb in the rinse water will neutralize the acid properly.
